*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

The coolest part is she's not using autotune, she's using a vocoder. Vocoders are like a synth and look like a keyboard with a microphone sticking up out of it. She sings this live and plays the chords you hear in her voice simultaneously live :)
I was told the song was about a divorce(whether or not that's true I'm unsure) told from the perspective of a child. Ransom notes in that context likely referring to custody issues, the imagery in the song is all of a house with missing pieces, missing pictures, furniture. The language used near the end "it's all for the best" and "of course it is" laying out the conversation between a parent and child respectively.
Ahhhh. The ''crop circles in the carpet'' lyric makes sense to me now : D
How she managed to create such a masterpiece with only vocals and some effects is beyond me
Her live performances are pretty remarkable, because she does all of this complex sound mixing in real-time, almost like a digital one-person-band. :)
Every producer owes it to themselves to go down an Imogen Heap rabbit hole.
She does everything on her own in the studio and even does it live as well... she's pretty remarkable.
It’s actually not auto tune, auto tune is preprogrammed.
She’s using a vocoder. She sings the notes which are turned into midi via the vocoder. She then plays a midi keyboard to get the chords.
Technically, this is not a vocoder. A vocoder uses a person’s voice as a modulator for a synthesizer ‘s sound (think Styx’s Mr. Roboto.). A vocoder’s sound is a synth patch that uses a microphone’s input to modulate an LFO. Basically, a synth that is made to follow the sibilance of a human voice, in much the same way as a talk-box gives guitars a “vocal”quality (Peter Frampton’s Do You Feel Like I Do).
Imogene on the other hand, is using a digital harmonizer (probably Melodyne on her Ableton Live rig.) triggered by a midi keyboard. Each note is actually HER voice , just pitch shifted to an absolute frequency. This allows her to play her own voice live on a keyboard.
But yes, you are correct, this is also NOT auto-tune.
Interestingly, it is only the background vocals that are played in this fashion…. The main melody line is sung unaffected by the keyboard background harmonies. Imogene has an amazing voice and an incredible range (as demonstrated in the second verse.)
Sorry, but you don’t seem to get the amazing quality and uniqueness of this song. This a moving piano ballad that was played on a new and interesting instrument. Comparing it to that talentless hack Kanye shows the depth of your misunderstanding. Kanye uses auto-tune because he lacks talent. Imogene is an amazing vocalist, musician, inventor and is on the forefront of musical technology.
I suggest you look into live performances of this song.
But yes, I understand the whole “4 chord” thing. But I think that in this case, it works.
Ive always loved this song. So unique and beautiful.
Pop songwriting has been depleted. There arent any new chord progressions. So all anyone can do is repurpose them in interesting ways. And i think Imogen Heap did that beautifully on this track.
This is as close to perfect composition as anyone has any business expecting to achieve. She takes a very standard, very simple chord progression, and then uses the relationships between the melody and harmony accentuated through extensions (along with phrasing) to create something truly stunning.
She’s amazing; has won several Grammys
This is her debut single, which debuted on the TV show The O.C.
Her production work is the best part of it. Genius stuff.
Next album Ellipse won a few Grammys and most recent full length, sparks, is my favorite to date. All very enjoyable- you’d be happy to react to anything else.
I just noticed that there's not many reaction videos to this song. This video will probably blow up at some point. You should react to her other live performances (one love Manchester is my fav) including her ones with her gloves. Good luck not becoming obsessed.
Amazing reaction ❤
It's about her experiencing her parents divorce as a child, having no control over the situation, and having to leave her childhood home.
yes, divorce is child abuse
Imogen Heap is one of my favorites!
Its a vocoder whilenshe plays piano. This is about her parents divorce when she was young. She does do this live and ive seen her live and it beautiful
She's been also innovating the idea of making music. Look at her music and watch her making of things.
Saw this live. Was really something.
As others have said it's not Auto-Tune. I would highly encourage looking for the live versions with either the keytar looking instrument or she actually uses special musical gloves!
FYI: The Mi.Mu gloves were invented by Imogen Heap herself. This is a great video where she explains the usage and shows some examples:

You might have been thinking of the actress Imogen Poots (yes that is her name lol)
love the song for soooo long..
She’s not using AUTO TUNE. She sings live a lot. The songs about her parents separation and divorce.
Here’s her TED talk about this song and the vocoder. ruclips.net/video/Th0qY3d6oHA/видео.html
The guitar playing was pretty on point
She used a harmonizer. She came up with a cappella because her computer died. She hooked up the harmonizer to her keyboard. The rest is history.
Bro, bro
I'm so earlyyyyy hiiii
🥳🥳
I love Imogen, you probably heard about her cause Taylor Swift clean song
