Frou Frou "Flicks" (Imogen Heap) | The Decomposer Lounge | Reaction and Song Breakdown
Frou Frou reactions
That entire album is an A++. Shoutout to Guy Sigsworth for his incredible production (1/2 of the Frou Frou duo)
I like Psychobabble ❤ for sure a solid album.
One of the best albums I've ever listened to
Oooh I never expected this, Frou Frou has some very very well put composed emotional songs like "Let Go" for example. Imogen Heap has done work with many artists including Jeff Beck, worth a look.
Let Go is my favorite. I instantly think about Garden State (the movie).
man that whole album swept me away
Jeff plays on her solo album on the track "goodnight and go". And Imogen sings on "rolling and tumbling" on Beck's "you had it coming" album
this whole album is a masterpiece. would love for you to do more of it.
It truly is a masterpiece album!
I know people are asking for Let Go because it was used in a movie, but if you want something that really uses the soundscape well, and introduces guitar into the mix, as well as just some delicious sounds that come and go during the song in a way that really makes it a compositional masterpiece to me, listen to "Breathe In" - it is nothing short of stunning, the way they use stereo on this one, and build the layers, with her voice, doing multiple tracks, at least 4 or 5 in the last chorus from what I can count, with the guitar, synth bass, other keys, and drums, yet it never feels overloaded. Still feels airy somehow. Then ends beautifully. It is SO worth the listen and reaction. But the whole album is a hidden gem.
I'm a metal head mainly, Frou Frou and Imogen Heap are my dirty little secret 😆
Listen to Frou Frou - Let Go
I first heard Frou Frou from the soundtrack to the movie Garden State.
THAT SOUNDTRACK OPENS UP TO SOOOOO MANY SONGS BAND AND MOODS!
@@dpaxeco I know it!! It's one of all time favorite "albums"
And movies haha.
@@BrandonKJohnson Hands down one of the best soundtracks ever.
I used to listen to "Let Go" over and over and over and over again as a soundcard and speaker tester. Never got tired of Imogen.
@@narlycharley welp guess I know what I'll be listening to on my may to and from work for the next few days lol
“Hide and Seek” is prob her masterpiece!
I don't know many of her songs, but this one is really good.
It's amazing.
I was going to suggest this as well. Lots of layering in Hide & Seek as well.
Never stop.
You are what "social media" is/was intended for.
I love how the sonic palette of this channel keeps expanding! Please check out Bat for Lashes, Massive Attack, Portishead, Goldfrapp, and Tricky for more of an electro-based style with great beats and eclectic instrumentation (as well as some amazing female vocalists). Tracks to start might be Bat for Lashes "Lilies," "Oh Yeah"; Massive Attack "Teardrop"; Portishead "Cowboys," "Mourning Air, ""Sour Times"; Goldrapp "Utopia", "Tigerman"; Tricky "Makes Me Wanna Die".
Second this. Also: Lamb "Gorecki", Loop!Station "The Last Time I Saw You", and Chelsea Wolfe "Flatlands".
i second "Sour times" or anything Portishead and would add, Everything but the girl - Before today
both of these songs were on the same (one of faves) compilation album "Urbal Beats", its full of great songs by great artists.
Imogen is an amazing songwriter and vocallist, among many other musical talents. I'm familair with Imogen, and knew of Frou Frou, but had never heard this song. And this is why I love being exposed to new music, and especially through this channel. Thanks for doing this, thanks to whoever recommended it, and keep up the great commentary on all these tracks.
Can you review “windowlicker” by aphex twin? 🤗
Or some Squarepusher for a bit of the jazzy electro weirdness! Music is Rotted One Note
@Danny Carvajal yeah anything by aphex twin honestly, polynomial-c is one of my faves
Aphex is the man though maybe Come to Daddy would be more Jeebz's speed. I'd love to see him react to Avril 14th.
Richard D. James, the man with the face. He was the reason why I spent a lot of days after school learning how to make electronic music.
That is an excellent idea
Immi is such a fantastic musician/songwriter/vocalist. This song was released in 2002 btw.
Imogen Heap is amazing! Her solo work is fantastic! Just for now and goodnight and go are personal favorites!
Same!!! "Just for Now" is perfect, "The Moment I Said It", "Headlock", "Little Birds", and "Half Life" are others that I can't get enough of.
GEEEEBZ!!! OMG OMG OMG
Imogen Heap, what can I say her music is everything to me. It transcends words and description...but I could talk about her for hours.
Her first album I Megaphone (which is an anagram of her name) was definitely her "early period" and had alot of late 90s pop production, almost like a British Alanis Morrisette to my ears. Good stuff, but different. Standout tracks: Getting Scared, Come Here Boy, Oh Me.
She then joined/created Frou Frou as a duo with Guy Sigsworth and they recorded only 1 album but it definitely influenced her sound continuing her solo career.
Her next album Speak For Yourself contains her biggest song Hide And Seek and was entirely recorded and produced by herself in her home studio with a few guest musicians playing drums or background vocals, and even Jeff Beck played guitar on the song Goodnight And Go. Other standout tracks are Headlock, Clear The Area, and The Moment I Said It which is one of the most emotionally powerful and expertly crafted songs and vocal performances I dare you to try not being covered in chicken skin the whole song.
I feel like I'm giving you alot....
Her next 2 albums are very much developments on the sound started with Frou Frou and Speak For Yourself, a few standout tracks Little Bird, Canvas, Bad Body Double, Xizi She Knows, Neglected Space, The Listening Chair (the entire song is composed only of her voice)......and that's just albums she's also released several dope singles but I've already overloaded you and I haven't even watched the video yet hahaha....I get excited, she's such an amazing writer, composer, singer, innovator (google her mimu gloves), and all around unique creative spirit and I'm beyond inspired by her work. Might have to leave another comment after I watch.....alwwriight
Geebz you should do Massive Attack "Mezzanine" Album. Probably my favorite electronic band ever.
Yessss
TOTALLY! Unfinished Sympathy would be great also.
Dude such an amazing album. I picked it up one day in a used bin at a local CD shop like 15 years ago and I still love it too this day.
My absolute favourite album, inertia creeps, omg!
This is amazing, Frou Frou, and Imogen Heap are amaaaaaazing. And your first listen experience of double chicken skin is exactly what happens to me everytime I listen to them.
SO great that somebody in your family is feeding you some great "indie" jams like Frou Frou and Radiohead! You guys are such a cool family!!!
Congrats on being certified Geebz! Hopefully the channel being monetized follows suit shortly.
Better of not making money.
Stay professional and have fun...
Wow, what a cool song! Thanks for introducing that into my day. I'm thinking you might like some Portishead. I guess they're considered trip-hop or drum and bass ?? and have a lo-fi sound. If you want full body 'chicken skin' check out their track 'Roads' - does it for me every time. Singer Beth Gibbons just has that special voice!
I think Portishead is trip hop, along the same general lines as DJ Shadow, Tricky, etc. All good stuff!
Great band and Imogen is such a unique vocalist and her playfulness comes out in more of her solo work - reminding me ofLaurie Anderson. This track wouldn’t be the one I would have someone listen to first
Yeess Geebz, first stop and you're totally getting the Imogen vibe. The layering, the subtlety and detail, her voice....she does use live acoustic instruments sometimes blended with all the synths and alot of fun producing tricks.
Imogen Heap is a treasure. I saw her in Boston years ago. She always polled fans before playing a venue at that location to see what their favorite songs are, and this one was Boston's favorite.
If you want a really cool song from Imogen Heap, I recommend "Neglected Space". It's not as popular as some of the other suggestions I see you've gotten ("Hide and Seek" and "Let Go" are the more well-known works), but it's another great example of the layering you point out here.
I never leave comments but I need to say that you are one of the coolest reaction channels out there. Really nice insight and perspective into the composition of the songs you review. Great job!
the producer is one of the best in the world in my opinion! He is Amazing! Guy Sigsworth!
As much as I love metal, I have a huge appreciation for Imogen Heap and her work. It's so nice to see you breaking this down and giving it the credit it deserves. Love your channel!
What a nice decomposition and what a nice guy! Many thanks for this and I absolutely adore this track and others from the extremely short lived Frou Frou. However, there are also many other gems with a similar layering complexity from Imogen Heap as I'm sure you've already checked out. Her vocal skills remind me of Angela McCluskey singing with Télépopmusik.
This was amazing!
I stop by this channel every once in a while for a professional opinion, and was delighted to see this song, which I just discovered earlier today. Never been a huge Imogen heap fan, but this whole album is transcendent. Absolutely gorgeous arrangement on everything.
Congrats on the certified! Great song choice to react to. It always great to get out there and explore.
Congratulations Geebz on your RUclips certification! 🎉🤘🎶🤙
This song is so beautiful just grew on me the first time I heard it WONDERFUL!! What a voice❤💃⭐
This needs more likes ❤ I don’t like videos often but I like this one.
Another vote here for Frou Frou - Let Go. It was featured in the movie Garden State as well.
Great song from a great album. I love all the tech metal breakdowns and everything, but there's just so much good music out there of all types that it's great to see you branch out. Keep it up.
You want to do a deeper dive on Imogen Heap, try the album Ellipse. The song Canvas is stunning. She also released a deluxe version with every track as instrumental too. Hypnotic stuff.
From a tech/production perspective too, her work on Mi.mu gloves is fascinating. She’s turned a world of desk and pedal controls into hand gestures.
Canvas is one of my favs, so gorgeous!
The Dumbing Down Of Love by Frou Frou still makes my heart break even after the 10 or so years since I first heard it. Such a pleasant surprise to see you reacting to this one, thanks mate :)
First time hearing that. Loved it!
Love her and love Frou Frou! Thank you!
CONGRATS ON CERT!
Awesome to see your breakdown and reaction to Frou Frou. Such a great pop group, and glad you took the time to listen! You should definitely check out "Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes or "Weird Part of the Night" by Louis Cole! Two very different kinds of sounds, but all beautiful and complex in their own ways.
Frou Frou brings me back! A surprising but welcome decomposition.
Love it, between this and Less Than Jake you got me in a good mood today too.
I know your list is unfathomable but as a compos..sorry, decomposer you will not regret sprinkling in some Imogen Heap now and then.
Stunning!
I appreciate these chill-track breakdowns because it opens up a broader discussion into the background layering work that's going on to create a more nuanced, intricate sound. Thanks again, Geebz!
Speaking on layers and sounds, I'd humbly request Between Sea and Sky by Kardashev. It's a layered, wall of sound deathgaze track that I'd love to get your insight on. I've seen the band show up in youtube comments and give their thanks, so at least there won't be copyright strikes! Cheers!
Subscribed cuz of this video in my reccomended
I mean that whole album is great to be honest :)
Hiii im new here , such a lovely reaction , not a lot of people react to Imogen Heap , yet she is one of the best artist of all time imo, so much emotion in her voice , it takes me to so many memories . I would love for you to react to more of her songs ,perhaps "The walk" , its beatiful
I first heard this album in highschool, it came out my sophomore year. I was a big metalhead with similarly minded friends and my friends would gently rib me for listening this, but by the end of the year constantly playing it while we'd hang out after school, I'd converted them :)
Agalloch - In The Shadow of Our Pale Companion !! You will absolutely love it and there are sooo many things to comment on and pick out for your videos!
Wolves in the Throne Room - I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots would be another similar alternative. Or some other Agalloch - Not Unlike the Waves is great too, honestly, most of The Mantle and Ashes Against the Grain are very solid.
I'm diggin it🤙
Almost 20 years old this song, the girls got skills. Her MiMU gloves., Next level
I've heard the name Imogen Heap before and for some reason assumed it was the name of a metal band lol...love love love this tune...as much as I love diving into some deep proggy prog prog, a more low-key synthy vibe is exactly what I needed to hear this morning. Mahalo Geebz!
Imogen is one of my favorite singers! check out some of her live/solo stuff!
imogen heap - hide and seek
I Love IMOGEN HEAP! You need to listen of her album called „Ellipse“, especially the song „Canvas“! Great artist!
after being subjected to the mental torture of hearing modern mainstream music for 10 hours each work day for the past several months, despite not being particularly into this, hearing this type of pop song makes me appreciate the mainstream past even more, and why I totally tuned out around 2005, which is when mainstream music seemed to really take a nosedive for the most part.
Awesome song, I didn't know it. Another addition to my music collection. Thank you! Well, a band I recommend is Cornelius especially with their song Wataridori. And also, their song Point Of View Point. They are awesome. They have a nice style and like to explore new sounds with ambient mixes. Excellent Japanese avant-garde rock.
Imogen is really good. Such command of the sonic palette. (For example, using full on volume automation of tracks instead of compressor for more control.)
Struggling to say imogen heap is really an indicator of being an old composer lol.
Imogen Heap is gonna go down with like.. Kate Bush and Bjork as pop GOATS. The Tesla of pop is really an accurate description; she’s an essential catalogue for anyone into modern production
I'm late to the party, but here to have fun🤙 awwwright
I found out Frou Frou and Imogen from her song in the Shrek 2 credits lol I LOVED that song so much I had to check out her music!!!
My recommendation is Returning Empty Handed by Underoath!!!!
Holy shit, a reaction to a Frou Frou song, woah. This album has some great sound scape placement on it, perfect for those of us who love little things like that. Details is an apt name for it haha.
never thought I would see Frou Frou on this channel let alone their best track! Glad you didn't go for the obvious "Let Go" (although its a great track too).
This is cool stuff! First time listening for me.
You should check out The Avalanches, song Frontier Psychiatrist. They're a dj band that compiled all there songs from samples of vinyl records, thousands of them, and took something like a decade to finish. There's also an great video that goes with the song. I promise you, you won't be disappointed!
Facts
Just added this to my Spotify list. Not my usual type of music, but this is a great song.
Just to add to you already growing list:
Further Seems Forever - The Deep
The Human Abstract - Mea Culpa, Complex Terms (2 songs, 2 different singers)
Beyond pumped on your Channel and your take on all music genres. Please check out Sigur Rós from Iceland. So many great albums, tracks, live shows, a movie and side projects. Favorites: Ára Bátur, Góõan Daginn, Starálfur, Glósóli, Hoppípolla, Gong or anything from the ( ) album. Please keep up the work!
hopefully now that you're certified you can get that 100K plaque! :)
Been catching up on your videos, since I love progressive music and haven't seen a lot of people delving into them, and seeing you switch gears to Frou Frou so sharply caught me by surprise. Imogen Heap is one of my favorite relaxing synth artists because of the emotion she still manages to pack into her music. But listening to you talk about layering and sonic tone selection made me curious how you'd react to heavily sample-based artists like The Glitch Mob and Phutureprimitive.
Cheers, and have loads of fun on your musical journey, wherever it takes you!
If I were to pick something of each of theirs to recommend, I'd probably suggest "We Can Make The World Stop" and "Kinetik", respectively.
Hey Geebz! Huge fan brother. Just backtracked to your Protest the Hero-Bloodmeat reaction. Been a PTH fan for so long, loved seeing your reaction to one of my favorites.
I'd still love to see you check out my all time favorite band, Every Time I Die. I think you'd really enjoy the song "Underwater Bimbos from Outer Space" off the album Ex-Lives. Every Time I Die-Underwater Bimbos from Outer Space
Happy listening man! Keep it up!
Try listening to Portishead!
Imogen is pronounced immo-jean.
She has such a delectable voice.
I thought that she herself pronounced it as immo-jin?
Holy crap... this is good. O_O
Something about this reminds me of either a more chill Xenia Rubinos’s Help or a more energetic version of Yuka Honda’s Humming Song. Very cool. BTW both Rubinos and Honda would make for interesting Decomposer videos as well imho.
Frou Frou is a collab between Imogen and a musician she has worked with in the past, and recently they actually did another song together and a small tour for the first time in years. I actually think they make the synths sound quite warm, myself, through the EQ and sound placement choices. And her vocal overload. You REALLY need to react to Cocteau Twins now that I've seen you listen to this and Lush.
Sylvan Esso is another electronic duo that has some mad layering skills
Jesus, this song chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes...such incredibly good emotion and movement in this...ugh, it's so beautiful. I struggle to sing along to it because I just choke up.
Geebz...please, please, please tell me how I can get you to react to "The Antikythera Mechanism" from an artist called BT. Normally he does dance techno stuff, but on the album this song comes from, "This Binary Universe," he made beautiful instrumental soundscapes. For that album, he invented and built wholly original instruments, tweaked around with his daughter's toys' sound chips and voiceboxes to get strange, unique sounds, composed orchestral music and conducted the orchestra himself, and combined all this with masterful, soothing electronic music, AND it's mastered in incredibly high fidelity with full surround sound. There's just nothing else like it and you absolutely have to hear it. I really, genuinely think it will enrich your life.
The only problem is that all the uploads of the album's tracks online are compressed and poor quality, so to get the true experience you'd need to listen to it on CD. I'd be happy to donate whatever you need to order the CD, or I could send you a CD myself, whatever way you prefer I just, please, need you to hear this music and expose your audience to it as well. Please.
The CD is available here: www.amazon.com/This-Binary-Universe-Bt/dp/B000G8OZ16
If you enjoyed that, try the Cocteu Twins.
Frou Frou was in 2002, and their only album is a classic of the british downtempo/electronic scene, so thank you very much for featuring it on the channel. If you're interested in this genre, you should check out Zero 7, I'll drop a bunch of links below so you can check them out, but if you were watching film and television around 2001/2002, you'll likely recognise them all.

Imogen Heap is my favorite female Artist. She‘s so creative it‘s unbelievable. Check out, the listening Chair, which has one of the best Musicvideos I ever saw and each minute of the Track represents ( I think 7) Years of her Live. Or Hide and Seek, which is the first Song, that made me appreciate the use of strong electronic effects on vocals.
my absolute favorite music video to this day!
Grandfather - the number 12 looks like you
Simple. I see frou frou, I like
WEEN!!!
I know it´s not the place but you have to listen to Amazonia by Gojira.
It´s awesome!
Also, i listened for the first time to Frou Frou on this video. Completely worth it and way more!!!
Came her serching for silver but i found gold!
Love you´re videos
"ih-muh-jen"'
This album is a stone cold classic for the millennial generation, and then honestly again for the gen born 1995 and after as many rappers dug it up for samples
Geebz: for some more indie pop genre stuff, can I suggest checking out Made In Heights - Ghosts (this entire album - Without My Enemy What Would I Do is great, really).
8:20 every single time I listen to this song I have to listen to this part4 or 5 times it's just that great
Portishead deserves your attention. I know you tend to just do single studio recorded tracks, but you should do a "special" react to the "Live at the Roseland". It's a full orchestra performance. It's just over an hour long, but I know it would blow you away. But pretty much anything of the Dummy album would knock your socks off.

That VHS was something I cherished back in the day.
Radiohead - Separator 👍
Olafur Arnalds - Ypsilon 👍
Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy 👍
Nils Frahm - Says 👍
A mini soundscape set list.
The best song on this album imo is the dumbing down of love
Norah Jones - Sunrise! Please listen. Also by same artist - Dont Know Why
Geeeebz I have been here since 5k subs. man the joy in your success, onwards and upwards. I highly recommend you check out a bad called "The Blue stones" They just released their 3 album Hidden gems and the song Shaking off the rust or Oceans is worth the trip.
Never knew solaire had afro
@@mouteg2176 He is grossly Incandescent so the afro is fitting
For the life of me I always thought the band name was pronounced frau frau (like German for woman twice). But I looked it up and you are correct.
While we're hitting up Pop, go for Hayloft by Mother Mother, and Gangsta by the Tuneyards
I would super love to hear you decompose The Mountain by Jonathan Hultén
Geebz is now certifiable :-P This song made me think of guilty pleasures so I offer: "Control" by Halsey. Short but powerful.
Still love the intro, reminds me to not work too hard and remain balanced.
She sang on some Jeff Beck songs.
And vice versa. Jeff played on her album (“say goodnight and go”)

Interesting listen! Of you are able to get back to Leprous, you should try their song "red", not to be confused with "the sky is red". Its a song no one has reacted to off their album The Congregation. Fantastic song that i believe is often overlooked.
