Great interview....... I' d like to confirm 200% Michelle' s words. If done properly, NOTHING compares to tret.🙌🏻✨It actually changes our DNA expression. Can we take a minute to process what that means?🤯 🧛🏻♀️🖤
Tretinoin is a fantastic product I have been using for many years. But those who are new to using it, PLEASE use a good sunscreen if you're not already. Sunscreen is THE MOST important thing to prevent skin aging. Wear it daily if you can, or at the very least whenever you go outside and reapply as needed. A good sunscreen with great UVA protection is essential. One can use all the tretinoin in the world and it won't do much IF measures are not taken to diminish skin aging caused by the suns UV rays which cause about 90% of skin aging. Once you have a good sunscreen (I use SPF 50 or higher) in place then tretinoin is the next/second most important thing you can do. I would follow that by a good face cleanser and then moisturizer at night (which also helps prevent skin from drying due to Tretinoin, for those who are new to it especially). I like the CeraVe brands. I use the non-foaming CeraVe face cleanser and the CeraVe moisturizing cream. Use what works for you, as there are many great brands. After all that, a healthy diet (heavy on healthy whole plant foods) and plenty of sleep and exercise are also very important in looking young. Also keep in mind that even if you are not outside in the sun, if you are near windows, you still get plenty of UVA rays from the sun which penetrate deeper and causes wrinkles/aging. So for that reason I wear sunscreen indoors or will use solar shades for my window to block UVA rays and use low UV LED lights in my house to see/lighten things up. I also try to get a good 10-15 min of sunlight in my eyes every morning as that helps give a 'waking signal' to your brain to produce certain hormones and regulate the bodies natural circadian rythms.
I have used Tretinoin for the past 17 years. I am now 67 and people think I am in my 50's. It is amazing and rejuvenating. I never had any reactions to it other than it got rid of all my dark spots and I have no wrinkles whatsoever. I also stay out of the sun. Sun damage is so aging. I also use it on my arms and legs. Amazing!
@@cocochanel773 Excellent! My skin tolerates the prescription Tretinoin perfectly. No redness, but it does make my skin peel about twice a year which is like getting a whole new face/hands and arms and legs. I work with doctors so they will give me the prescription and my insurance pays - it only costs me about $15 per large tube which would regularly be $120 without insurance coverage.
Firstly, I want to say I love this channel. I am in my mid 50’s and have been using Tretinoin for more than 5 years now and yes I had some irritation in the early days. I persisted with it, starting off on .025% 2-3 times a week and then slowly increased it to nightly over a few weeks, until my skin adjusted. I now can use .05 % anywhere on my face, eyelids, neck, hands and chest without any irritation, even directly onto damp skin. I will keep on using it, as it is the only thing I have used that seems to work miracles….
Eyelids? I do not know if you are aware but that is a risky proposition considering the well established issues with tretinoin and the Meibomian glands. Just a heads up in case you did not know.
@@nls8520 Hi. Yes, I've stopped using tret now but I just used it cautiously under my eyebrows to avoid it getting into my eyes. Even then I did feel that some worked its way down so I agree it's best avoided.
I have been a long-time user of Retin-A, and I will tell you ladies that the brand is far superior than the generic. If you are interested in anti-aging and if you are serious about working hard to keep your skin at its best, you need to be using the brand and not the generic. Yes the main ingredient is the same but the fillers that are used in the generic dry the Skin Out terribly and in my opinion inactivate the active ingredient. And get ready you're going to pay more money for the brand but in my opinion it's far worth it. My mother used the brand for six weeks and the generic for 6 weeks. She started with the generic first....waited 2 weeks and began the brand. Her skin looks so much better when she was using the brand . Much less irritation and her skin looked more hydrated. And yes she use the exact same percentage each time. I've been using Retin-A now for probably 20 years so I know what I'm talkin about I just turned 42 and I had a gentleman asked me what college University I went to and I was like what are you talking about. He was dead serious he thought I was in university college student. Use the BRAND. YOU WILL THANK ME.
A thing that bothers me when it comes to the effects of Tretinoin...It stimulates the cell turnover. I guess you heard about telomeres? They diminish every time the cell turnover. So...even if we get a good result NOW and some years in the future..What happens when we tun out of telomeres quicker than we would have? I really want to ask this to a specialist!
I’m 80. Anytime I use anything but Retin A I get Milia. I have no wrinkles or fine lines. I use .1% and have for 30 years. I said I grad high school in 61 and someone argued you mean 71. I easily pass for 70.
Besides having no scent (hooray, hooray!), it really does reduce the wrinkling on my 67 year old skin. There are lines on my forehead that had been there since I was in my 20s... and they are almost gone. I've been using dermalmd anti aging serum for several years. Whenever I stray to try out the newest and greatest thing in moisturizing, I always return. This is my mainstay, and it works for me.
Why aren't you putting the camera up, higher. You're looking down. Not good. Dr. Qian is wonderful. She gets to the point and explains clearly. Except for the fact that she promotes her own products, I trust her.
Great video Clare - well presented and very informative. Like you I moved from retinaldehyde to low dose tretonoin. The morning after I first used 0.025% I could see a difference - skin was less dull, clearer and more radiant. I don't think it's always necessary to use the highest strength.
Thank you David - and I totally agree about the strength. I’m on 0.025 at the moment as well and will move up to 0.05 and leave it there. Like you the skin clearing benefits became quickly obvious.
Another great video! I stopped tretinoin use of 5+ years after my skin became overloaded with experimentation (gotta love a RUclips channel!). I've only recently reintroduced Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate into the routine, which is going well. To be honest, I don't think I'll ever go back to tret. While I truly believe it works and I'd recommend to just about anyone, the love has gone a bit for me. Think I'll take Dr. Qian's advice and stay low. I look forward to more videos!
Hi Mary. It’s so lovely to get support from other RUclipsrs and you run a great channel, so thank you. Really interesting perspective on tret. My plan is to use it for a year or so and then switch it a higher strength retinol. Really hear you when it comes to overloaded skin 😂 x

Very informative. What I am still wondering and I couldn't find an answer: Should you keep going if the skin becomes irritated? Do I have to go thru this process? I did always stop when the skin became sensitive and after it healed I kept going. And I see already an improvement with my 0.5 Retinol A. 😁🙏❤️ thank you so much if anyone could get light into this.
Hi . Yes, Dr Qian said it’s normal for the skin to be sensitive at first and peel and you should keep going through that but if it’s still sensitive at 8 weeks then the strength is probably a little much for your skin and you should think about moving to a lower strength tretinoin/ retin A. For now, try applying non-fragranced moisturiser on the irritated areas before applying tret. Try not to stop and start as the irritation is something you have to go to though you could try alternate nights for a while. Hope this helps
@@thehonestchannel you as should start on 0.25. I have used it for tret for two years. I actually think it can take months if not years to need to go up a dose.
Hi Clare, I’m really interested how you actually get the product… do you go to your gp and ask them to write you a prescription? Or did you go to an aesthetic practitioner who can write prescriptions?
Hi Lucy. I’m going to publish a video on my own tretinoin experience in the next couple of days so keep an eye out.. I buy it from an online skincare site. A GP might prescribe it for acne but I don’t think for anti-aging purposes. Some doctors like Dr Qian with their own aesthetic practices will also prescribe. I’ll have a bit more info in my video for UK viewers : )

Vit A overdose is very serious. I have come across several people that claims that they got very ill from using Tretinoin bcs they absorbed too much vit A. Is this something you heard of? Maybe those people already ate enough vit A in the diet and then the Tretinoin just pushed them over the limit and in people that doesn't eat much vit A this doesn't happen? I eat quite a bit of vit A and I'm concerned what would happen if I also started to use Tretinoin..
Very interesting I'm looking forward to your Tretinoin/Dermatica review as I'm about to sign up for it, but wanted to see your opinion and having a peel soon(just at my local beauticians so not one where face will fall off lol) so want to get that out of the way 1st. Thank you x
Hope you get a great result with the peel. It’s so far so good with the Dermatica prescription tretinoin. I’ll publish a video within the next few weeks.
As much as I knew, I still went over board. It is 100% true more days per week is not better. It will be trial and error. Keep a log and find your sweet spot. I use 0.025 3x/wk. Anymore than that I break out. I'll save the higher dose (i.e 0.5 etc.) For when I age some more. Tret is the best! I always get skin compliments
I am 70..I was one of the first woman decades ago to use it for skin by my Doctor in NYC..But I really advice NEVER around eyes..it is a major cause of dry eye...please be smart..
@@thehonestchannel Please research..just the very outer corners of the crows feet if that beautiful face of yours has any..tretinoin travels far..fast..please dig into dry eye..etc..then you decide..I actually do right on top of my eyebrow instead..I figure if it walks it will hit the lid..lol!
I wonder if you could use "A 313 balm" which is a French form of retin A only milder, if it could be used for around the eyes? But still use the tretinoin for the rest of the face and neck. And maybe even use A313 for the neck as well instead of the Tretinoin cream.?
wonderful video.. I have read alot about Tretinoin...I read that using this product will make your skin worst ..with dryness etc..before it looks better is that true? Did you experience these issues? I would appreciate any feedback you can offer..Also, i read an article that pregnant mothers should not be using the product..and that they don't have enough evidence to prove that it can affect a pregnant women..but if they are telling you not to use it during pregnancy.. then they must suspect can be side effects..?? So i think the doctor should be stating that in her opinion..
Thanks Susanne! I did definitely experience dryness early on when using tretinoin and still do if I change moisturisers. I talk a bit about it in this video ruclips.net/video/7WI3MdkGWEc/видео.html We need to remember tretinoin is a prescription medication so it’s powerful and we’re not sure how much is absorbed into the bloodstream. It’s thought to be very low and you can reduce that by using only a small amount and not applying to broken skin. That said it has been used by millions of people around the world for many years so we’d know by now if there was a major issue.
I can probably get my doctor to prescribe Tretinoin bcs I have keratosis pilaris. BUT....I just saw that they don't have a pure Tretinoin creme anymore. They have combined it with an acne medication called Clindamycin. They call the cream Acnatac. I have never had acne in my life. Don't know if it's good to use this cream then when it's not pure Tretinoin?🤔🤔🤔🤔
You can do that, or if you start with just a small amount on a low dose there may be no need. I moved from a high-strength retinal to tretinoin and started on the lowest strength and had manageable irritation using it every night. You can try applying non-fragranced moisturiser first on sensitive areas to minimise irritation.
This is the first time ever I heard a doctor recommending Tretinoin to be used for anti-aging until one gets results, and then stepping back to use a Retinol for maintenance... this goes against everything I read. As we age, the cell turnover gradually decreases more and more.. If anything, one should be using Tretinoin even more in the future than going backwards. Tretinoin is a long-term commitment. Not a quick fix. I'm really confused by the statement this doctor made. Also... I'd like to point out to everyone here that Tretinoin is medically proven and regulated to work. Meaning, the product you get is proven to work. Retinols are not regulated. Meaning, your Retinol (cosmetic product) is not proven to be good quality to actually work. So it would be more guaranteed to work against fighting ageing using a prescription Tretinoin.
I do not see the need to use retinol for maintenance. Tretinoin is safe and used for the long term. You already get enough retinol if you have a healthy diet too.
Hi Chris. Excuse the late reply - and thanks for supporting the channel. I found Dr Qian’s approach an interesting one because she’s basically saying you can use tretinoin to take your skin to a certain point and then swap for a non-prescription alternative to keep up the good work. Tretinoin is harder to come by in the UK and is expensive so I thought this seemed a sensible approach and one I would consider down the line. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the results I’m already seeing with tretinoin and intend to keep going!
I have been using tretinoin for many years. At 0.1 concentration, I use it every night and have no peeling at all. I am 58 and no one believes me, It might have some genetic and lifestyle components too. But to me tretinoin and vit C are the ones to go.
After 1 year or so on being on tretinoin I stopped for few months…I lost 50 pc of gains I had made n now it is taking me forever to reach that point where I was when I stopped tretinion…big mistake to stop or downgrade I feel…ur skin is aging as well during this time…all I know u need to keep going to more than going less…
It's very difficult to get here in Canada, unless your Dr will give you a prescription. And with over a quarter of Canadians now without a family doctor, it's difficult. I ordered out of country and Canada customs confiscated it at the border, saying we're not allowed to have these products. I guess our govt wants Canadians to look older and uglier than other countries 🤣 I don't see why we can't have it over the counter, it's ridiculous
That is annoying. It would be worth looking at something like Geek & Gorgeous for either their retinal (my preference) or retinol range. I found those pretty effective - just not as potent as tretinoin.
That is ridiculous, like here in the usa its only by prescription, however seeing a dermatologist for one is pretty easy to get ,just$$. Recently I went to Mexico and bought some its in every over the counter pharmacy there lol ive been using it and its so dumb that someone wanting to use this cant buy it easily, its not that serious and shouldn't be hoarded lol
All retinols dry up the oil gland in the eyes which is very dangerous. But at least you'll be beautiful when you develop chronic dry eyes and blurry vision..lol
@@thehonestchannel This is still not safe to use. Please read all the reports (e.x. reddit) where many haven't use any ret or tret around the eyes and got dry eye syndrom anyways which is irreversible. it travels to other areas of your skin and when you sleep your pillow helps tret to move to your eye area. It takes years until you feel something is wrong and at that point its to late. PLEASE PLEASE talk about the danger of using tret and ret on your channel in one of your videos.

@@carolnewlands8630I’ve read about the risk of dry eye syndrome with tretinoin and I would like to avoid it. I’ll do better, thanks!
@@thehonestchannel Always happy to help!!TY!!
@@thehonestchannel OMG maybe that is what’s causing me dry eye!!! If I stop using close to eyes will the dry eye syndrome stop?
I wonder if you could use "A 313 balm" which is a French form of retin A only milder, if it could be used for around the eyes? But still use the tretinoin for the rest of the face and neck. And maybe even use A313 for the neck as well instead of the Tretinoin cream.?
Tret is not available in Ireland anymore, not even Ketrel cream.
wonderful video..
I talk a bit about it in this video ruclips.net/video/7WI3MdkGWEc/видео.html
We need to remember tretinoin is a prescription medication so it’s powerful and we’re not sure how much is absorbed into the bloodstream. It’s thought to be very low and you can reduce that by using only a small amount and not applying to broken skin.
That said it has been used by millions of people around the world for many years so we’d know by now if there was a major issue.
@@thehonestchannel ..thank you for your feedback..I always enjoy your videos 😁
I swear by Tretinoin, I'm on level 0.030%. I have tracked my progress with pictures and my results are insane.
Great to hear 👍
I can probably get my doctor to prescribe Tretinoin bcs I have keratosis pilaris. BUT....I just saw that they don't have a pure Tretinoin creme anymore. They have combined it with an acne medication called Clindamycin. They call the cream Acnatac. I have never had acne in my life. Don't know if it's good to use this cream then when it's not pure Tretinoin?🤔🤔🤔🤔
Availability does vary in each country. It’s quite easy to get it in the UK for instance, but harder in some other European countries
I heard to use it every other night for a month and slowly move up. Low dose
You can do that, or if you start with just a small amount on a low dose there may be no need. I moved from a high-strength retinal to tretinoin and started on the lowest strength and had manageable irritation using it every night. You can try applying non-fragranced moisturiser first on sensitive areas to minimise irritation.
Why does it enlarge pores?
Tretinoin exfoliates the surface layer of your skin so should reduce pore size.
@@thehylander266 totally! Why is this doctor saying otherwise? Is she maybe selling retinol cosmetic products?
What I'd like to add though is that I love this channel :) nevertheless. I just don't agree with what the doctor said.
Dr dray has just gone into this paper. There is no clear causality between tret and death.
Yes, as Dr Qian says as well it seems to be a bit of a red herring thankfully! I have been using tret daily for over six months now with no issues.
I keep retinol out of my eyes by only applying a tiny amount under my brows
@@thehonestchannel This is still not safe to use. Please read all the reports (e.x. reddit) where many haven't use any ret or tret around the eyes and got dry eye syndrom anyways which is irreversible. it travels to other areas of your skin and when you sleep your pillow helps tret to move to your eye area. It takes years until you feel something is wrong and at that point its to late. PLEASE PLEASE talk about the danger of using tret and ret on your channel in one of your videos.
@@takeyourtime3328 I will look into this and try to find an eye specialist who can explain.
@@thehonestchannel thank you. you are doing a great job!
@@takeyourtime3328 Really appreciate your encouragement! Thank you 😊
You look so beautiful
I am wondering how old is Dr Qian, she looks like she’s at her mid 30
Good interview but it's a little bit one side it's all about "Me" in this case the lady who's asking the questions, but I don't like the way that lady keeps on interference saying "oh yes - okay - haha - yes - yeah - uh-huh - okay, and then so loudly, while the other lady who's talking about the tretinoin doesn't interfere when when the question lady asks the questions, but the one asking the questions when the lady is talking she keeps on going aha oh yeah yeah haha it's very irritating and annoying_ you almost can't hear everything that is being said because of that interfering. Sorry I had to say this because it's so irritating when people don't let other people talk clearly by interfering.
Point taken, thank you!
@@thehonestchannel you're welcome_ thanks for understanding. ❤️
What a bizarre thing to say, no way was the interviewer obtrusive in any way. It is natural to say something in agreement whilst having a conversation with another person..
