I'm so glad you did gene pitney fil.....was my mums all time favourite, so brings back huge happy memories. Gene's voice was, as you say, completely unique voice. Nobody else sounds like his.....one of my favourites is "just one smile"...i'm 59 now and he's still one of my favourite singers.....:)
I have always been surprised by how many songs Gene Pitney wrote (and produced!) ...glad you're taking a look at this talented man, so now I can appreciate how unique his singing was, too.
Lynn Do... If you have not seen the concert of Gene Pitney from 2000 enjoy! all of his hit are there. ruclips.net/video/QPTUzOa98K0/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
Thank you, Fil. I have been a BIG fan of Gene Pitney since I was a kid. Love his voice. In 1984 - 20 years removed from his heyday - I saw Gene in concert, and I came away a bigger fan than I had been before. His voice was even more impressive than it was/is on record.
One of my favorites from my 1960's days. He was great and unique..a one and only. I spent my afternoons wallin' with Gene in the bedroom mirror as a very your teenager. LOL Thank you for bringing him forward in my memory and I'm really looking forward to your further review. He had so many fantastic songs!..Liberty Valence, 24 Hours from Tulsa and of course Town Without Pity.
FiI, I really appreciate the time you take in analyzing how an instrument or voice achieves their sound. You are not just a talented musician/performer, you are also a born teacher. Coming from a family of teachers, in my opinion, that is the highest complement there is. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. They are miles above most reaction videos. Thank you.
We had a show on tv here in Canada when l was a young boy called Pig & Whistle which was set up to look like it was in a British pub and featured Singers of past and present. I can still hear the opening theme song in my head. My father watched it faithfully. Gene had one of those great unique voices that didn't sound like anybody. Great songwriter for others and a nice string of hits of his own. I remember him all over the radio as a young boy. Enjoyed this Fil. Thanks for another excellent analysis. 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
What a unique voice he had. I remember listening to him sing 24 hours from tulsa on am radio. And I think his best song "only love can break a heart" It is beautiful. He had lots of hits. I remember them all now that I have listened to them on youtube. Thanks FIl, I had forgotten about him. I wonder who else I never think of anymore?..lol In 63-69 (when I graduated) AM radio was all we had, and only at night when the signals were strong. Our best station came from two states away, KOMA in Oklahama City. Sometimes really late we could hear a feint Louisiana hayride from across the country, It was really weak with lots of static . And sometimes we got Woflman Jack's show coming from a big tower in Mexico. Those stations in Mexico had a huge part in music radio for the USA in those years. I am rambling again..lol. Loved hearing Gene Pitney again. Fil.
My favorite song by him is of course A town without Pity... He was original for sure lol but my favorites by him were ballads Thanks again FIL for taking me back to better times all the time!!! You should have been born in those times to have been able to see them live... I never did get to see Gene sing live, sadly ..you are so appreciative of good talent !!!
Never heard of this Gent, but as always you open up new or "old" artist to me. Definitely appreciate your vocal analyses of Mr. Pitney. Having a spouse who has taught voice, I can really appreciate your take, Thanks Fil
I only watched this to support you Fil, because you're so good at analysis. Gene Pitney is unique alright, but I always thought he sounds weird at any speed - but now I'll appreciate him for being a songwriter.
WOP i must say you're a cool guy the way you're into an extreme variety of music styles and the way you break it all down. Makes me appreciate music a lot more. Well done!
What a voice Gene Pitney had, as You mention He was a great songwriter! always like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Town Without Pity, among other. excellent breakdown and analysis Fil. feel free to do another one on Gene! thanks for this one.
I so love seeing clips I’ve not seen. Some were people I heard my parents enjoy and others are from my own era. You are special and are introducing some of the worlds greatest voices and performances.
Good look Fil. I grew up in the late 50's amd sorta considered myself a music snob over here in the colonies. Didnt realize we had a home grown genius here. Sorta thought of him on the same level as the rest of the manufactured singers here in the states. (They were reason why the Beatles took off so hard over here) Having quite dismissed him to a pop act, i moved on with the Beatles and never looked back. I should have. Funny how it takes a trip down memory lane with your explanations to wake me up. Good job.
Interesting life story and an accomplished songwriter. One of those guys who stayed more traditional through the 60s and 70s music explosion. Thanks Fil
Hi Fil! Have a happy weekend! I have Gene Pitney music on my playlist! His voice is recognizable the minute he starts singing! One of my favorite singers from my high school days! He does Ricky Nelson music pretty good! He is truly missed! Thanks for taking me back to my music! My favorite song of his was Only Love Can Break a Heart....loved him! ✌️
I have Gene on my playlist too. My favorite one would be " I,m gonna be strong ". Fil had so many options ( I assume) analyse a great Pitney song ,but why he selected this performance is beyond my believe.
Gene Pitney was another fabulous singer that my mum introduced me to as a youngster! He had such a unique voice and I still listen to him today! Liberty Valance is my all time favourite of his! Brilliant Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌👍
Gent Pitney I remember and met him too. Outside the Worcester, Mass. auditorium on the sidewalk. I think it was 67, he was singing before the Byrds came on. I recall how he was dressed in a suit coat and tie. While the kids there were getting into the hippie thing, he stuck out. It's vague from this point, I remember the Byrds fairly well!
Hi again Fil! I bet you had parents, or family that loved the sixties, or seventies..I say this because of my own daughter..she was raised with so much of my music that when she got to college her friends were amazed at her knowledge of the oldies...she informed them that she cut her teeth on that music! I often have wondered who influenced your love of the early sounds! Just an observation! Hugs Fil!
I have always been a GP fan. He has so many great ones. It is so unfortunate (and embarrassing) that he was a bigger success in Europe than his home country. He was a genius in so many aspects of music.
Those Brits of a certain age will recall (as BBC4's current 'Top of the Pops' repeats bear out) Gene topping the UK chart in 1989 with Marc Almond, doing 'Something's Got A Hold Of My Heart' and a cursory examination of his writing and singing credentials don't disappoint. Crucially, he had a distinctive voice that has not been copied. And that's pretty rare.
The night Gene died he had sang the last song in a concert in UK “Town without Pity”. That song was nominated for an Academy award but lost out to “Moon River”.
Thank you, Fil, for appreciating Gene Pitney's vocal technique in this performance. He would have only in his early 30's at this stage. Judging by his appearance, especially the glassy eyes and bloated face, I would say he was probably suffering from advanced alcoholism. Definitely sad as his contribution as a pop songwriter and singer makes him one of the greats. In any case, I really loved your analysis that included the vocal demonstrations. This makes for more appreciation of this craft. -- And can I say thank gawd for the people in the UK and other parts of Europe who provided support for America's discarded great artists during those times. Had Gene Pitney been in better health and lived longer, there probably would have been a great rebirth of appreciation for him over here in the U.S. to include touring . . .
If you feature Gene again, please do Town Without Pity. Really showcases his voice. Love that you keep us entertained with so many genres. Thanks, Fil❣️
Its 6:03pm Saturday ,Jan 25th, good evening, Fil. (Also read some of comments you stated, that: good taste you have Mr. Jimi Hendricks tee shirt on , admire this guitar genius greatly very influential he's was still is, again thanks fil) Apologies I did see your analysis once this morning and had to listen 2 more times. It was like being in a Physics class with you speaking about :'Resonance Chamber' the sound quality in the voice and in a anatomy /physiology class when your spoke about chest voice vs. Head voice and the muscles it entail( I remember this from school and before my accident I was a nurse and biologist, so really thanks for being informative intriguing and displaying quiet nonchalant wisdom). As well, being able to understand how to use these gifts of technique to give that dramatic effect to the audience. I have a lot to say and I took notes that was how great your analysis was, awesome.... the best one yet, Fil. Massive appreciation. Also, I never heard of this gentleman named: Mr. Gene Pitney but now ,I respect him and will be looking at videos on his performance and his music more now when my time permits.Thank you Fil. You also, mentioned about the 'flip up' quality country music singers used and my mind iterated when you discussed Ms. Patsy Cline, Fil. I am tired and not feeling well and do not want to be verbose again. And I will comment more on your analysis some other time. But wanted you to know it was great today and learned a lot. Similar to video I saw on:Glissando, my violin teacher on RUclips who stress when to use certain techniques judiciously especially when audience follow the journey, story the performer is presenting and the anticipation something coming and then a beautiful finish and it's almost to what you always discuss Fil. So , I have sent support today Jan 25th so look for it and appreciate all you doing and keep it up, Rock....🧸🎸🥠.
I have to admit that "Town Without Pity" and "It Hurts to Be in Love" belong to Gene Pitney. Unfortunately in this case is that Ricky Nelson is one of my vocal heros since I was 7 or8, I miss hearing his deep warm vocal tones of Ricky Nelson on "Hello Marilou." "Town Without Pity" was perfect and haunting because of his voice. In my humble opinion, of course!
🥺 24 hours from Tulsa, Only Love can break a heart , Liberty Valance, Mecca, etc. He wrote and sang so many. I only know of Ricky Nelson singing this song of Genes. I think Ricky Nelsondid a fine job, on it. Wish there was a video of Gene doing his other hit songs, Fil. Thanks for the analysis on this super talent; Gene Pitney.
This is a few years past Gene Pitney's heydey in the USA but highlights his talent. I really found it interesting the singers were reading sheet music which indicates some formal training in music. Gene was the singer of some great songs like "Town Without A Pity." He had tremendous charm.
The 'barmaids' were backing singers on the 'Wheeltappers And Shunters Show' this was a variety tv show in the UK hosted by 2 comedians Bernard Manning and Colin Crompton, the girls were just playing along with the skit, if you watch the full video you'll see that better. They didn't need the music and you see them 'reading' it when they are just oooooooing and ahhhhhhing.
@@OldiesAl Good info. Thanks. Gene Pitney and Johnny Rivers are some of my favorite 60's singers. I saw Johnny Rivers last year and the guy kicks butt well into his 70's. Amazing!
His concert from 2000 is pretty amazing, he even still looks the same. If you want to know how epic this dude was check out his after 2000 preformance's.
Come on when you listen to this who wouldn't smile? We get your professional analysis that comes with that killer smile of yours no matter who it is. Fil you are such a unique person who radiates a positive loving glow of personality. Thank you. If I ever won the "big" lottery in the USA, I would cross the ocean to meet & help you! 😍😚💕👏🤗
Love Gene Fil❤️ this song was not his best, he has such a beautiful voice. Half Heaven and Liberty Valance were great songs to hear his range! I will listen to him till I die. Plus he was Handsome till he passed, Great Man❤️
I confess I prefer Ricky Nelson's version of this song to Gene's, but the man was an AMAZING talent! I could listen to "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" on a loop! :D
Gene Pitney my favorite is Town without Pity. I used to get tears in my eyes. He was so good at making you feeling this song. USA he had that hit. Thank you Fil🤘
I remember Gene Pitney being played on the radio a LOT in the 60's in the U.S. I always liked his voice because it was so unique. Thanks for explaining why he sounded like he did. I only learned much later in life that he was also a talented songwriter. That being said, even though he wrote it, I don't feel this song gave him much to work with as far as showing his abilities. His version of Town Without Pity (which seems to me a much more difficult song to sing ..well), It Hurts To Be In Love, and my favorite Only Love Can Break A Heart are much better representations of the emotion he could pry out of a song. He also sang the title track to one of my favorite movies The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. He had a very diverse career. And until I just looked it up, I always thought he was British lol.
Do you know that he was very popular in Italy when I was a teen? He used to sing in Italian and we loved him! Check on RUclips Gene Pitney San Remo. He sang quite a few songs in Italian and he competed with some of the most famous Italian singers at our most important musical festival called “ festival di San Remo. I am not sure but he might even have won one year.
Anna, discovering those videos of Gene at the San Remo Music Festival made me an even bigger fan. He also recorded songs in German for the market in Germany. He was quite incredible.
Rene LeClerc Rene, I did not know that but I am not surprised because he was really a great artist. I wonder what happened to him. That was such a long time ago, for me at least.
Rene LeClerc I had no idea, so sorry to hear. He must have been in his 70th... he did not suffer at least, that is good to know. Wow...we come and we go.
He was only 66(Born Feb. 17, 1940) He worked out regularly, was in apparently good health, when he had an unexpected heart attack. He died in his sleep in a hotel in Cardiff, Wales after what was his final concert. He was on his bed fully clothed, it was said that it looked like he just resting, and went very peacefully. The last song he sang was "Town Without Pity".
Such and interesting discussion of vibrato, Fil! Gene Pitney was the greatest. He didn't write in the Brill Building like many others of that era, but his publisher was in the Brill Building so he got to know all those writers even though he lived in Connecticut (so basically, he was the square suburban kid taking the commuter train into the city haha). One of his great early recordings, even before Town Without Pity was Every Breath I Take a really great doo woppy performance of a famed Brill Building writer Carole King song. He had such a wide range - he recorded a whole album of Burt Bacharach songs, really before Bacharach and David had locked in their signature style. He recorded a country album (or two?) with George Jones. Phil Spector produced some of his early songs, but again, it was before Spector's wall of sound had been fully refined. Those 2 seems like such opposites personalitywise, I can't see them enjoying a long career together (and they didn't). I love his recordings of The Street Where You Live - he takes the Street from London and moves it to New York, Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart (the original, not the duet) and of course his best recording ever: Town Without Pity - such a classic song - sounds great even today. I could go on and on. He also had about the strongest work ethic of any top performer ever. Of course he died while on tour, in Wales I believe.
Love Gene. When my Auntie was younger she would go over their house as she was friends with the family in Connecticut. We stopped by once. Great memories.
Okay, I see why you chose a song that Gene did not make famous in America. He wrote it. I did not know that. 🙂 But it is such a pop song. I much preferred Ricky Nelson’s voice/version. You do not get to hear the intensity Pitney reached on songs like A Town Without Pity, It Hurts To Be In Love, Half Heaven, Half Heartache. We cannot forget my favorite movie song, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance...my favorite western movie as a 6-7 year old. I’m happy to hear you say you will look further into his music and career. I hope you enjoy the journey!
How I wish you had played the earlier number, 'Princess In Rags' was one of the first records I was bought, I was 3 years old but danced around to it when it came on the radio, still my favourite track of Gene's. Gene played piano on some early Stones tracks as he was in the studio in London when they were recording, the Jagger/Richards song 'That Girl Belongs To Yesterday' was written for him and gave the writers their first UK top 10 hit. I saw him live a few years before he died, he had so much talent and so much charisma but also a very humble man. Taken way too soon, a unique voice, similar to Roy Orbison in some respects.
Don’t know who suggested this to you Phil, but this is the absolute worst sample that anyone familiar with Genes huge catalog of high quality performances would want to see. He typically performed live with full orchestra back up and his many hits would have given you so much more to work with in your analysis. I love your work but the late great Pitney deserved better. His vocal prowess helped put Burt Bacharach on the map and his writing helped several pop stars of the 60s
I enjoy all your reviews, but in this case, yes, you should have Gene singing "Half Heaven, Half Heartache",or "I'm Gonna Be Strong", or some other of his hits live. This is OK, but not close to any of his truly outstanding appearances. "Hello Mary Lou" is sung here live in England on The Wheeltappers and Shunters program. On this same date he also sang "Princess In Rags". In another appearance on the show He sang "Half Heaven, Half Heartache", and "Blue Angel". I saw Gene at The Front Row Theater in Highland Heights, Ohio in 1983. It was a great 1 1/2 show with Gene backed by a 17 piece orchestra!
@@jeffgreen7499 I've already commented on this above. I saw him in 1995 with his orchestra, what a star. I'm going to find Town without Pity to calm down.
Covered by Ricky Nelson. Town Without Pity was his big hit. He was mentioned by John, Paul and George as being one of their influences concerning Beatle music.
Hello Fil! I use to play Pitneys song “town without pity” redone by Ronnie Montrose...my wife loves Gene...look what the tv ppl invented...the hee-haw placards! Hope u are. Well...always sending blessings...
Hi Fil !!!!! Rubber ball, The first song I remember that actually gave me Goose pimples every time I heard it. I don't know what it was about it, but it just really rung with me.
Gene remained very popular in the UK after his star had waned in the USA. This show, The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club TV show was designed to replicate something like the Batley Variety Club- a workingman's social club. One of my friends did a tour with Gene in 1963, and he said he was a real professional. Apparently, he would deliberately trip up over his mic cable when he came on stage- this got the audience to be concerned about him and got them on his side. On another matter, Gene Pitney claimed one of his ancestors was on HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
I remember Gene with great fondness back in the 60s. My sister had many of his albums and I listened to him often. I'll join many others in a vote for Town Without Pity. Another singer I'd like to request who is not well known in the US is a great female blues singer. She's been around since the 90s. She has a wonderful full, powerful voice and sings each and every song with great passion. That singer is Beth Hart. She's done quite a few songs and concerts with Joe Bonamassa. I'll leave it to you to choose which one as in my opinion they are all excellent. Best regards, Steve
Уважаемый автор, у вас чудесный английский, хорошо различаемый на слух даже мной :))) Приятно слушать, факты - интересные. Как раз искала факты из жизни Джина. Спасибо и привет из Украины.
Gene had an unusual voice and he had a long and varied career.A little known fact is that Gene played piano on several early Rolling Stones recordings and also opened for them on some of their early tours. This is undoubtedly when he achieved something I envy him for.He bonked Marrianne (un)FAITHFUL(think driving piano riff on"Let's spend the Night Together-apparently THEY DID!)Another famous singer who also "did the deed"with Ms.FAITHFULwas lead singer Allan Clarke of the HOLLIES,a band that had a collective crush on Marianne to such a degree that they felt compelled to put it to song, but changed the first letter of her name so that their crush wouldn't be quite so obvious. That song of course, their hit,"HEY,CARRIEANNE"(can anybody play ?)
@@juliestrom412 Yeah I googled Pitney to verify what I was talking about and also found out that some of the Hollies and Gene Pitney and Phil Spector worked together on three or four early Stones songs.I'll bet Marrieanne had a field day at those sessions.LOL
@@juliestrom412 RUclips has a really nice Hollies live video of them singing" Carrie Ann"right after Graham Nash left to join Crosby Stills and Nash and they replaced him with the very capable and charming Terry Sylvester.
when this started it looked like a bill murray snl parody...but yeah love this tune and do it quite often at local open mic nites with fun audience response...was also covered by new riders of the purple sage on their powerglide album from 1972....done up in a real country rock style.....ok...thanks....
Jane Oliver did a slowed down cover of Half Heaven, Half Heartache, with Pitney singing harmony: ruclips.net/video/dVJQB3IU3os/видео.html. Check it out. I think you'll love it!
I wish you would analyse Gene Pitney and "I'm Gonna Be Strong", especially for the huge vocal crescendo at the end.

Wow professor Fil, great verbrato demo, thank you for doing this one, Jeff in LA USA
My 18yo daughter is a big Gene Pitney fan and she has some vinyl albums of his. She will be thrilled that you covered Gene. Thank you so much.
The Rockville Rocket! Had the pleasure of sneaking into the Crystal Lake Ballroom to hear him years ago...
I really like your vocal appraisals, it's educational for singers. I do think Gene had other songs that showed off his voice greater than this one.
" Only Love Can Break A Heart" / "Half Heaven Half Heartache."
These are my 2 favorites by Gene, but many more really good songs.
@@riverrafter5799 "I'm Gonna be Strong" was another good one, I think Cyndy Lauper covered that when she was with Blue Angels.
Loved the analysis Fil! Great demonstration! And the performance and audience were a good laugh!
I'm 35 and I adore Gene Pitney's singing. I'm very glad to see someone appreciate Pitney.
Fil - your enthusiasm in these videos makes watching a pleasure.
Another great reaction Fil. 💝🙋♀️🇦🇺
I’m leaving just as soon as I finish this beer...
For Gene Pitney I meant about "Town Without pity". Gene OWNS it!
Gene wrote the song.
Awesome analysis Mr. Fil, thanks, I am really liking the demonstrations :)
I also like the doom speed version of this song. but seriously thanks for all the great music lessons🎸
🥺 24 hours from Tulsa, Only Love can break a heart ,
Liberty Valance, Mecca, etc. He wrote and sang so many. I only know of Ricky Nelson singing this song of Genes. I think
Ricky Nelsondid a fine job, on it.
Amazing!
"24 Hours from Tulsa". To this day, him singing that song still gives me chills.
His concert from 2000 is pretty amazing, he even still looks the same. If you want to know how epic this dude was check out his after 2000 preformance's.
1974, the year I graduated from highschool. Lol. Thanks for all the info and history.
I love Gene Pitney. My favorite is, Something's Gotten Hold of my Heart", with Mark Almond.
Gene Pitney my favorite is Town without Pity. I used to get tears in my eyes. He was so good at making you feeling this song. USA he had that hit. Thank you Fil🤘
He came close several times, but I don't think he ever topped that one... epic performance
When you can hear someone's voice and hear the whole song without the sound. A Town Without Pity
@@annabaldi8648, Gene's been gone since April 5, 2006. He was appearing in Cardiff, Wales, and died in his sleep after his show there.
Do one of his good ones please how about town Without Pity is a great one!
Love Gene. When my Auntie was younger she would go over their house as she was friends with the family in Connecticut. We stopped by once. Great memories.
Correct, I thought he was from Conn. I was not too far in Worcester when I met him.
Patty Farghaly he was called The Rockville Rocket 🚀
@@peteypete24a Rockville was it.
Never saw backup singers reading the lyrics before.
I know! How weird is that???
They'd never seen him before and they can actually read music? It looks like a UK working men's club?
This was so nostalgic and a sweet reminder of the good 'ol days of the seventies. ✌ Enjoyed it.
I totally concur Marc !!!!
He was in his prime here, the fella can't be more objective.
Sorry but this tune is owned by Ricky Nelson. "Town Without Pity" is Gene's best and the one you should have reacted to.
Finding a live version isn't easy unfortunately!
I enjoyed it.
Listen to Gene sing "Town Without Pity" then tell me what you think.
Rubber ball,
The first song I remember that actually gave me Goose pimples every time I heard it. I don't know what it was about it, but it just really rung with me.
I thought you were talking about Red Rubber Ball by The Cyrkle. Loved that song!
@@lastone783
That Red Rubber Ball was written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley.
I like the old guy with the hat behind the backup singers, looking up their skirts. 😮
I have his greatest hits album. One of my all time favorites
This is a fascinating video. I get it.
She's here somewhere!
He did some great duets with George Jones. His Tenor with Jones' baritone made some great material!!
This is gene singing in a Yorkshire club love him xxx
Уважаемый автор, у вас чудесный английский, хорошо различаемый на слух даже мной :))) Приятно слушать, факты - интересные. Как раз искала факты из жизни Джина. Спасибо и привет из Украины.
High skirts and a jacket that creates optical illusions... Gotta love the 70s...
Really? Very interesting. Love Carrie Anne by the Hollies. So unique. As far as Gene goes, l never knew he wrote such great songs. Straight shooter.
What's your game now ..can anybody play ??? Yes .🎶
😳 Woahhhh. Someone else I’ve never heard of . 👍
Gene was an incredible singer❤
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was one of his good ones.
when this started it looked like a bill murray snl parody...but yeah love this tune and do it quite often at local open mic nites with fun audience response...was also covered by new riders of the purple sage on their powerglide album from 1972....done up in a real country rock style.....ok...thanks....
Gene Pitney was great and had so many hit songs.
TO ME , ONE OF THE GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME,YOU COULDNT HANG A GENRE ON HIM, HALF HEAVEN, HALF HEART ACHE WAS MY FAV SONG THANKS FIL
Jane Oliver did a slowed down cover of Half Heaven, Half Heartache, with Pitney singing harmony: ruclips.net/video/dVJQB3IU3os/видео.html. Check it out. I think you'll love it!
Agree Dennis
Dennis Lawson Yes, Another huge hit of his.
This clip dwarfs his talent and voice.
