Kenny was my teen heart throb (yeah I'm Old). His voice is something you recognize immediately, masculine, distinct and unique. Ruby, my favorite back then, shows off the rasp you speak of. Lady, later, really shows his range. Bless him, will miss him. And Dolly, well, she is a national treasure. She can sing anything, with anybody.

It was a real tragedy when the world lost Kenny Rogers. I've been listening to him in the cradle as my Mum loved The First Edition and when he turned country, my Granny played him nearly every day. Besides the Gibb flair in this song, I get the fact these two were just having so much fun singing this. I just love their video You Can't Make Old Friends. It brings me to tears knowing Kenny is gone, but it's such a great song...about them.

My husband and I went to a Steppenwolf concert in the late 60's and Kenny was the opening act for them. We soon forgot Steppenwolf but never forgot Kenny...he saved that night!!! He sang "Ruby, don't take your love to town" and a few others, too.
I heard Barry Gibb say they gave this song to Kenny and Kenny said that it ought to be sung as a duet and he knew the perfect person to sing it with him: Dolly Parton!!!
    Loved Kenny's raspy voice..what a sweet guy.
    We will miss him 💔

@V8 fool -I never heard about that one. Elvis was a great talent too. There'd be no real reason for her to refuse to do that. In fact she was ok with him singing one of her songs but Tom Parker messed that one up with his demands and it never happened.

Kenny sang a cover of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" in a duet with Sheena Easton, and during a live show around this time frame he brings out Dolly to help him sing on "We've Got Tonight". During the performance towards the end where they both take turns singing the lines, instead of, "Who needs tomorrow", Dolly sneaks in a, "Who needs Sheena Easton" and Kenny has a big laugh but somewhat of a nervous one since she puts him on the spot in front of the audience. They truly were very close friends and it shines through in their work.

Kenny didn't like the song, absolutely didn't want to cut it... Barry suggested a duet with Dolly and yes she just so happened to be at Middle Ear Studios! Plus you have to give credit to Albhy Galutan and Karl Richardson. The Gibbs were really musical geniuses. I honestly believe that this song would have brought the Bee Gees out of the Disco backlash had they cut it for themselves.

In fact, originally the songs wasn't meant as a song for Dolly and Kenny. The first idea was to make it a soul song for Marvin Gaye. But for whatever reason Gaye wasn't able or didn't want to record it. Then Barry got in contact with Dolly and Kenny and the Gibbs rewrote it into a country song to match Kenny and Dolly's style. A rewrite that was going to make history.

Soul mates come in different forms. The chemistry and friendship between these two is such an example. I’m so glad they did the song “You can’t make old friends”. I’m sure that’s a very bittersweet song for Dolly, as it talks about the show going on once one of them is gone. They both know that in the next life they’ll surely see each other again, as said in the song because “you can’t make old friends.” Such a divine gift and connection that these two used to share their beautiful talents and chemistry with the world. Two of my favorite people since a very little girl. RIP KENNY To echo Reba, “Dolly, he sure loved you”

I think this period of time was when Kenny looked sooo handsome and after the plastic surgery he was never this good looking again. Some celebrities went under the knife and it was like the Mona Lisa had been defaced. Kenny Rogers is a good example of this and another example is Priscilla Presley. Before her plastic surgery she was a GORGEOUS woman and the surgery ruined her looks. It's a shame that celebrities don't make the decision to look their age and maintain their beauty instead of trying to shave five or ten years off of the way they look and in the process totally destroy their looks.
Of course, regardless of the way he looked Kenny had a great voice and I loved his songs "Coward of the County", "The Gambler" and "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town". In answer to George Jones' question of "Who's gonna fill their shoes?" I would say in regard to Kenny Rogers, NO ONE will fill his shoes. RIP, Kenny. We will be playing and loving your music for a long long time to come.

Another nice tribute to two "old-school" giants Fil! Classy as always. So sad we have Kenny Rogers no longer, but we still have his music.

You never tire of seeing Dolly Parton show why she is just such a phenomenal talent- in a league of her own. Kenny was the consummate professional- a master of what he did with a great voice that delivers on the lyrical component of the song- as he proved with his version of "Ruby" no maudlin histrionics- just a mastery wrought from years of experience. You really need to do an analysis of Roger Miller. It was his version of Ruby that Kenny tweaked to have that monster hit. Roger was unquestionably a musical genius- a man of so many talents. Here he does his biggest hit and you can see Thumbs Carllile on Telecaster- playing it flat in his own idiosyncratic but brilliant way. Thumbs is worthy of a video of his own but to do justice to Roger, you would need quite a few. ruclips.net/video/oKF-712iz9w/видео.html Here he is- being totally zany and you get a glimpse of Dolly Parton before she left Porter. This is hilarious: ruclips.net/video/wS0ToIJv_P4/видео.html

When Kenny and Dolly recorded “Islands in the Stream” in the studio, it was only the second time they ever met. Previously he appeared on her 1970s TV show.

Thanks for sharing man! Kenny Rogers had such a great career. Dolly, well...she’s Dolly! Two gifted musicians, songwriters and performers. This is one of those moments when a great song (thanks Barry Gibb!) could be performed by multiple artists and it’s fantastic. Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie worked together on “Lady” which became a massive hit for both! ✌🏻🙂

This guy had amazing voice control. In addition, he would turn on his “distortion pedal control”. Some singers, like Joe Cocker, had a naturally hoarse voice, ie he sang this way all the time. And many singers have a vocal loss with age - a good exemple is Robert Plant, he just cannot reach those levels of Led Zeppelin songs anymore - but Kenny kept his voice accuracy ‘till the end. Such a phenomenon ! Great Fil

He was a man with a unique sound, a distinctive voice. Same thing with Dolly. And as you said it so well, Kenny Rogers was BIG in his day. As always, your insight into the music itself, the performers, and performances, taps heart and mind. Your channel is a bright spot in an complex, unreasonable, confusing, annoying, ify world. Tuning into your channel, spotlights how similar in appreciation of others... different others... we truly are, and I love it.

Brother Fil, I am feeling old because another one of the greatest singers/artists of my childhood has passed away. As I have said before Dolly is from a hour or so away from where I was born & Kenny is a favorite of mine from my childhood so as far I am concerned, music is dying with the autotune, etc. Spot on as usual. 👍👍
"Love Or Something Like It", "Lucille", & "I Just Checked In" are my favorite Kenny Rogers songs.
I also like his duets with Dotty West.
I am a racing fan and "You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel" is a standard.
He was in a racing movie and I can't remember the name of the movie except for the line "No shit Dick Tracy what's your next case?"
The last time I remember seeing him was in the Geico commercial.
