As a classical singer, I don’t see vibrato as an effect, or a separate technique, it’s a result of healthy, free. vocal production. Straight tone is actually an effect, a result of tension, preventing vibrato. Baez has a natural free, beautiful voice. She sings better than many opera singers. I love her to pieces for singing, her playing, and her writing. She’s just brilliant.
So nice to hear this from a classically trained singer. I've heard J Baez sing opera and I feel she has a real gift. I've had disagreements with those who favor Judy Collins. To me, Joan Baez is in a different league. "Haunting" is the perfect word to describe her voice, or as Bob Dylan said, "a voice like chimes."
Joan Baez could stand in front of thousands of people, with only her voice and her guitar, and keep them spellbound for the length of her performance. I had the good fortune to see her live, and i can tell you her voice could raise the hair on the back of your neck. She was just incredible. This song of lost love is heart-wrenching, and brings tear every time I hear it.
I actually do cry. She was my mom's favorite singer... also, the chord progression in this song is full of longing, regret and all that kind of stuff that makes you (or me) emotional.
Joan is a fantastic all around artist. Diamonds and Rust is high on my list of favourite songs of all time. And while some songs don't age well, this one certainly does. She can pull it out any time and play it and it sounds current and draws you in without sounding at all dated. Great choice here. Oh man... she is a gem.
When I saw you were doing Joan Baez I couldn't click on this fast enough. Presenting this great music and artists to newer generations is your gift Fil. Keep it up, brother.
The Joan Baez’s, the Carroll King’s, the Carly Simons’, the Linda Rondstand’s, the Joanie Mitchell’s The Bobby Gentry’s. I thank you for the great memories, great music, for the times that were, for the times that will never be, but for the memories in our minds that will be forever.
I was blessed to attend an outdoor folk fest weekend in 1999 where Baez was the headliner, along with Odetta, Gil Scott Heron, the Violent Femmes, Fred Eaglesmith and many other great folk performers. All awesome, but to experience the beautiful Baez vibrato, accompanied only with her acoustic guitar, as her voice filled the entire area with an angelic, otherworldy sound that will stay with me forever.
I absolutely love this somg. I always have. Everything you talked about Fil is spot on. The thing that I think sets this song apart from so many others is the use of metaphor and imagery. "The girl on the half shell could keep you unharmed." "Our breath comes out in white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air." Absolutely brilliant.
There is nobody like Joan Baez. Since the early 1960s I've loved everything she's recorded. There will never be another with that voice, that courage.....I could go on forever!
Thank you Fil! Once again you have shown perfect taste in musicians. Joan's legacy will forever sit alongside Dylan's as a voice of enlightenment in their generation. I tear up with every listen.
Joan Baez has a distinctive voice and play the guitar so effortlessly a pure joy to watch and listen to. She one who stands behind in what She believe in even if it's unpopular. excellent analysis and rundown on Joan thanks Fil.
I must have played her version of Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind" a thousand times. Love her. I used to sing it myself a lot when driving in my car. (hugs)
Thanks for your reaction. What poignant lyrics. I got to see Joan perform twice, Once was years ago in the 70' s at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and the other time was in Knoxville , TN, where I was privileged to attend her "Fare Thee Well" tour. She is still as amazing as ever!
Fil, I think you meant Pete Seeger, not Bob Seger, who was responsible for helping Joan get started. This song is mesmerizing; both vocal and guitar work. Joan Baez is truly a legend. Thanks for all the work you put in on these videos.
@@wingsofpegasus I know this is kinda old but Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan???? Bob Seger was maybe a little to young at the time. No worries, I knew you meant someone else. Fil, great pick. I had not heard this song in ages. When I think of female folk singers, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez are the first two names that come to mind. Turning stories into poetry. Rock!
Sweet Sir Galahad is a good one written by Joan. It's about her sister Mimi Fariña finding love again after the death of her first husband in a motorcycle accident on her 21st birthday.
It is fascinating to listen to a young Brit reacting with both musical and cultural intelligence to the songs with with I grew up. These are the songs that defined my youth and, to a certain extent, my life. She is singing about her relationship with Bob Dylan, of whom I have said that when he dies, my generation will come to an end. These people and these songs mattered. They mattered a lot, and it's wonderful to see them appreciated by a young musician from another culture and another generation. Hell, two or three generations ago. It brings back to me how meaningful and wonderful it was.
I've noticed that whenever Joan Baez takes the stage, suddenly everything gets very quiet. That's the sound of people allowing the miracle that Joan Baez take them over. Its as though speaking over her would be like cursing in church or shouting in a library. Her voice is so utterly distinctive, her incredible vocal power enclosed in warm caramel melting into your soul. Although she comes from purely folk roots, her sheer magnetism demands attention in any venue large or small, and her musical talent, hushed awe.
I appreciate her not saying : I boughtchoo some cufflinks. Singers today dont enunciate their words enough. It's not difficult but seems impossible for most of them.
Probably my favorite Joan Baez song. 'Haunting" is an accurate description here. For some reason I remember almost all the words. Really like Joan singing "Forever Young" I can listen to her sign this endlessly. Thanks Fil. OH Joan was 34 here (born 1941) The slogan was "don't trust anyone over 30" Joan squeaked by on that one. I do wonder what Joan thought when she first heard this "new girl" (Joni Mitchel is only 2 years younger)Wow,talk about incredible competition but the the entire decade (the 40's) was the birth decade for many of my favorites. I have been wanting to suggest some pure vocal bands Fil.
Agree completely about her cover of “Forever Young”. I admit to never wanting to listen to anyone attempt to cover it, including BD. I remember an episode of “The Wonder Years” (I think, anyway) where the sister leaves home that used her cover as the closing musical score. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. ruclips.net/video/BZ0n8nPnC7I/видео.html

I loved Joan when I was growing up. The purity of her voice was unique and powerful. She was another solid female example and role model I had in the 60's and 70's. Thank you for the effort you put out gathering information to share with your loyal fans, of which, I am one.
You were right Fil, I went to the link and watched it all the way through and didnt even realize 5 minutes had passed like it had. What a haunting melody and her voice is magic.
This is my favorite Joan Baez song. Saw her at Academy of Music in Philadelphia in the 1990s. She was so good. She did George Michael's song - Hand to Mouth - during the concert.
I first learned to play the guitar in 1963 by using a book of chords and listening to Joan Baez albums to figure out the progressions and picking patterns. I've always thought she had one of the greatest folk voices of all time! I still play every day at age 71 and owe her so much. Thanks Joan!
She is hypnotic. Expression on her face, in the lyrics and her perfect guitar playing. Watch her acceptance speech in 2017, into the Rock Roll Hall of Fame. Quite long, but you will hang on to every word.
Here is my favorite folk singer. I loved her the first time I heard her rendition of Joe Hill. I think she sounds better in person! She is very beautiful and very kind as well. I love her all around.
You’ve really been locking in on some great women artist. Always loved this song. Haunting melody. With folk singers/ story tellers look up Arlo Guthrie numerous videos (old & new).
Wow, Fil! I listened to Joan Baez when my big brother came home college, him 19, me 9. I love that you point out her clarity, vibrato, and guitar technique!
"With just her guitar and voice" - yes! And one of the songs she did at Woodstock only with her voice. All alone on that big stage singing to that enourmes crowd, and even more: she was actually pregnant. It is in it self impressive that she wasn't too nervous to hit a note in that situation. But everyone who have seen the performance will know, that she does it perfectly!
So thrilled by your analysis! When I was young at the time U was laughed at by listing Ms. Joan Baez along with Chet Atkins (and others) as my favorite guitar players ... “she’s a singer, come on?!” I could only find solace that they never listened to her play. Saw her perform in ‘71 at a college when being dragged there by my mum, but the show was amazing! Her guitar was integral to her story-telling that became central to her fame. Good review, Fil. “Rock!” 👍🏻
Thanks to my dad for introducing me to Joan. It took me seeing her live performances to really appreciate her talent and the beauty of her voice and her very being. I can understand why she and Bob Dylan were drawn to each other, even though the relationship ended very badly.
My favorite female artist by far. Joan's voice is just so powerful and completely unmistakable, i believe she has to be one of the greatest singers ever. Love her!
Really enjoy your channel. Love the respect you show for artists regardless of genre, time period, style. Hope your Reaction will inspire viewers to explore (revisit), Joan’s body of work. Her voice, lyrics and songwriting are extraordinary, her commitment to truth and the ideals of the folk movement are unwavering. I’d love to see more Jazz and World music Reactions.
Artists like Joan are why I was never impressed by Madonna, Beyoncé and so many more. Yes, they can perform, but the quality just isn’t there. Thanks Fil!
Madonna et al are good, but (as I've said before) good female singers are not hard to find. Joan Baez and the others that Fil has been reviewing lately are a whole other category.
Talent like this will never come along again - sends a chill down my spine every time I hear it. Thanks for featuring one of my favourite artists of all time; great analysis as usual.
Oh what an artist, Song for David was one of my favourites, Jo Hill was another. I’m 69 and still love listening to Joan sing. Brings back some wonderful memories.
The one person in the world I would love to spend an afternoon talking to. She's has seen it all, been there and a part of it. The sixties and beyond. My life. She's an icon of my time. And one of my favorite songs. (Dylan made a booty call and she shot him down.) You're the best. Keep giving the back stories and history. "Carrickfergus" is another song by her (live)you might want to review. Thank you for what you do.
Great tribute to a great singer and great human being. I saw her live at Tanglewood I believe it was. She sang Amazing Grace with truly amazing grace. I never heard anything before or since that had so much vocal magic and majesty.
Another great analysis video Fil! Most people overlook Joan's guitar playing because of her incredible voice. But Dylan himself stated that early on when he was still really learning the guitar he tried to copy Joan's style but couldn't do it, so he gave it up.
When Joan was dating Dylan when they had joint appearances he would never let her play because he was jealous of her talent. He admitted to it later on.
Not so much a songwriter, in fact this is her best known song of only a handful. But a mesmerising performer and beautiful person who my wife and i have seen a few times at Birmingham Symphony Hall, a venue that showcased her abilities, vocal and guitar, to the max. Perhaps on a personal level 2nd only to Kate Wolf a really prolific singer songwriter, storyteller taken from us far too early as i have mentioned previously in an earlier post. Really surprised that she’s not yet been appraised and analysed by yourself along with Nanci Griffith
What a great song. Great story teller, a talent seemingly missing today. Great analysis. Sometimes the word great is overused, but I am in such awe of her...
Another great pick Fil. I still remember being spellbound as a child the first time I heard Joan singing. That decade from 1965-1975 saw so many wonderful musicians reach their artistic peak I consider myself so lucky to have grown up through this time.
Wow since your analyses of Jefferson Airplaine I have been thinking about Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez and wondered if you would ever do an analyses of her playing that song...are you a mind reader Fil? :) Thank You! The sound of that guitar, those lyrics, and that emotionally haunting voice have made me cry unexpectedly when I've listened to it!
Thanks, Fil for posting this treasure of a tune. I remember learning the guitar part when I was a very young player. Diamonds and Rust has always been one of my favorites by Joan. She is a GREAT songwriter a wonderful singer and an underrated guitar player. You did a smash-up job analyzing this.
I love this song, and I never knew that Joan sang this originally! I loved it by Judas Priest, then I found out about Joan and I loved it by her! This was before my time, this is great!✌❤
Another great analysis. Keep up the good work. Listening to this rendition of Diamonds and Rust reminds me when I saw Joan perform solo outdoors near Tanglewood, Western MA in 1972. It was a mesmerizing concert as her voice drifted out among the pines.
Always loved Joan's voice. I put her sound in the group of "clear as a bell" ladies voices that appeal to me. Judith Durham (Seekers) and Ronnie Gilbert (Weavers) are another couple of favourites. Loving the variety of your reviews, thanks again. If you read from "cues" when you give your artist backgrounds, it's damned hard to pick it. How much DO you know, anyhow.......
Fil, you have one of the best channels on youtube, so well spoken. Your effort really shows and how you support musicianship. Continual study is important in life, much respect to you!
Another wonderful analysis! I haven't seen all of our videos, yet, but I'm working on it. And your lessons. I started learning about 25-30 years ago and started playing by ear, after learning several chords. I think your lessons will help me since I'm actually re-learning how to play, after not playing for several years. I still remember a few songs, to my surprise. I've always loved Joan Baez's voice. So much feeling. This song is a wonderful choice for both vocals and guitar playing.
Fil, thank you SO MUCH for sharing my favorite song with younger generations. Joan's haunting, melancholic lyrics, the melody, the voice, her actual personal history .... Words fail--just the very best.
You don't discriminate. You take us through many genres and extend our understanding. Too me, Joan is one of a kind and has aged like fine wine with all its complexity. Could you also cover her sister Mimi Farina and maybe both of them together sometime.
I love Joan Baez's voice!!... I'll admit I'm not very familiar with many of her songs unless they had been played on the radio years ago or when I was a teenager I would listen to a lot of 60s music like from Woodstock like the ones you've been playing that's the only music I've really heard of hers... too many artists and not enough time.. as always your musical knowledge and research is much appreciated...✌❤🤘
Lori Pond Have you heard “Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word”? It’s a good one. There’s even a video out there her doing that song with Earl Scruggs & his son in her house. It’s pretty neat to see.
Joan Baez is one of my favorite and thank you Fil for your choice. Totally mesmerizing and haunting, definitely one of best sopranos ever. Side note: Would you consider doing presentation and analysis on CCR? Thanks.
I have a dear friend who is a professional singer/performer who sings this song (which I often request) and she plays and sings this song just like Joan. I close my eyes and it's like Joan is right there. I have loved this song for almost 50 years.
I was 20 when I first heard Joan sing this song, and yes I was mesmerized by her voice and the song, and its always been one of my favorite songs, love the Judas Priest version too, thx Fil 🤘💕
I saw a recent version by Joan of this where she sings “ 50 years ago I bought you some cuff links.”. Perhaps you could review a video of her playing with Earl Scruggs and his son at her home. Really lovely video by David Hoffman.
Keep the classic stuff rolling Fil.... this has been a who's who of the best ! What a voice... one of a kind ! 😇 She has that magic of telling a story while singing 😇🎙 That protest song she sang at Woodstock to close the first night was amazing.... her voice ringing out in the night with little fires lighting up all over the hill ! Request: Beth Hart ... Immortal Live at Paradiso - This woman will just blow you away... I haven't seen a performance like this.... EVER ! Talk about a artist really getting into a song.... W❤W !
Thanks Fil! A good analysis & (as per usual) well-researched background of the artist. One error I think you may have made was when you said the still-teen-aged Baez “met up (out East) with Odetta & Bob Seger”[sic] & was invited by the latter to the Newport Folk Festival. It was the late folksinger-activist Pete Seeger who was of course a founder of that famous festival..
her song writing, playing fluidity and the natural all around excellence of her voice are the result of a clear genius. she didn't need to tailor any of it ...it's organic.... I detested her politics but was thoroughly captivated by HER. she draws me inside and I cry like a baby....one of the few artists that I will die regretting not being a friend of hers
Had practically every album she recorded including some very old songs like Old Blue which can give you chills. My favorite artist since my 20s. In my 70s now. So many wonderful songs she has provided to us. Thank you.
Remember a sign on a coffee shop when I was a lad, with words to the effect "Joan Baez might play here tonight! (but then again probably not)". The whole folk music scene was quite vibrant back then and Joan was very popular in our crowd.
As a classical singer, I don’t see vibrato as an effect, or a separate technique, it’s a result of healthy, free. vocal production. Straight tone is actually an effect, a result of tension, preventing vibrato. Baez has a natural free, beautiful voice. She sings better than many opera singers.

Einfach eine tolle Frau ! ❤
Danke Joan
What language is this, Kemosaby?
So thrilled by your analysis! When I was young at the time U was laughed at by listing Ms. Joan Baez along with Chet Atkins (and others) as my favorite guitar players ... “she’s a singer, come on?!” I could only find solace that they never listened to her play. Saw her perform in ‘71 at a college when being dragged there by my mum, but the show was amazing! Her guitar was integral to her story-telling that became central to her fame. Good review, Fil. “Rock!” 👍🏻
Yes, incredible voice, incredible guitar, incredible presence, mystique.
There are few songs that can move me they way this song can. I always cry I hear this song,..it doesnt matter,. I love this song
NAIL ON HEAD!100% CORRECT! Madonna and Beyonce', are the worst!!
They're very talented at self-promotion
How can you even compare those fools to Joan? It's like comparing a ukulele to Paganini !
axiomist The college kids I worked with for the last 39 years thought I was an old curmudgeon for not acknowledging the “greatness” of these women. 😀
Joan Baez, 1960, House of the Riding Sun, ASTOUNDING! Joan, the Quaker, one of, if not the most principled performers of my lifetime.
I love how you can understand every lyric perfectly.
The one person in the world I would love to spend an afternoon talking to.
She's has seen it all, been there and a part of it.
The sixties and beyond. My life. She's an icon of my time.
And one of my favorite songs.
(Dylan made a booty call and she shot him down.)
You're the best. Keep giving the back stories and history.
"Carrickfergus" is another song by her (live)you might want to review.
Thank you for what you do.
One of my favourite female singers. She has a mesmerizing voice.
To this day, her music, her voice her words, still resonate. As important as an artist as she a speaker of truth and one who stands for what is right.
Great tribute to a great singer and great human being. I saw her live at Tanglewood I believe it was. She sang Amazing Grace with truly amazing grace. I never heard anything before or since that had so much vocal magic and majesty.
Beautifully said 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Another great analysis video Fil! Most people overlook Joan's guitar playing because of her incredible voice. But Dylan himself stated that early on when he was still really learning the guitar he tried to copy Joan's style but couldn't do it, so he gave it up.
Her voice is hypnotizing, at times putting you on edge.
Love your videos, mate. Joan Baez's soprano vibrato has always blown me away. Her talent is stunning, just flat-out gifted. Thanks for this one.
It does you great credit, and makes a real difference for the viewer, that you acknowledge every comment with a click.
Great work. Thank you.
When Joan was dating Dylan when they had joint appearances he would never let her play because he was jealous of her talent. He admitted to it later on.
RickJason hate to say it but yep!! But she joined him 10 years later in the Rolling Thunder Revue! Classy lady!
There's only two people I know of who could harmonize with Bob Dylan and make it sound good, and one of them is dead: Joan Baez and Tom Petty.
@@willdwyer6782 Right, Dylan harmonized perfectly with Tom Petty and the Wilburys.
But I can't stand Dylan with Baez....
@@Thomas-xs2kq weird how we all have different tastes, I love some Baez a duo with Dylan, but I mostly can't stand Dylan solo.
Her guitar playing while singing with so much emotion is a tour de force - her talent level is up there.
Joan Baez is a folk revival goddess. I have absolutely adored her work for as long as I can remember. Thank You, Dear Fil! Loved it! ❤️
What a great song. Great story teller, a talent seemingly missing today. Great analysis. Sometimes the word great is overused, but I am in such awe of her...
Your appreciation and knowledge of these legends from decades ago is amazing, you could be a music professor
Thanks!
Yep
Thanks, Fil for posting this treasure of a tune. I remember learning the guitar part when I was a very young player. Diamonds and Rust has always been one of my favorites by Joan. She is a GREAT songwriter a wonderful singer and an underrated guitar player. You did a smash-up job analyzing this.
I love this song, and I never knew that Joan sang this originally! I loved it by Judas Priest, then I found out about Joan and I loved it by her! This was before my time, this is great!✌❤
Your exploration and appreciation of all genres of music, along with your expertise makes this a very enjoyable channel.
Wonderful information, analysis.
Thanks!
Cherry Snow No. It used to be.
For your listening pleasure, dial up Baez Sings Dylan. Highly recommended.
Hi Fil. Such a cool Joan Baez song. As usual, you've given me a new appreciation of the multi-level artistry. ~Thanks
Joan Baez is one of my favorite and thank you Fil for your choice. Totally mesmerizing and haunting, definitely one of best sopranos ever.
Side note:
Would you consider doing presentation and analysis on CCR? Thanks.
Thank you! It's like I'm reunited with a good friend. I listened to her all through my teen years and into early adulthood
You always cheer me up with your wonderful attitude and analysis with every type of music. So knowledgeable and always so positive. Rare nowadays.
To sing and play to that level is superb and it's live exceptional talent well done Phil for playing this one
Great commentary on the best female folk singer in my eyes.
I have a dear friend who is a professional singer/performer who sings this song (which I often request) and she plays and sings this song just like Joan. I close my eyes and it's like Joan is right there. I have loved this song for almost 50 years.
NEVER REALLY UNDERSTOOD THE RELATIONSHIP WITH DYLAN, LOVE HER AND THIS IS A HAUNTING LOVE SONG. GOOD CALL FIL. JT FROM MEX
I was 20 when I first heard Joan sing this song, and yes I was mesmerized by her voice and the song, and its always been one of my favorite songs, love the Judas Priest version too, thx Fil 🤘💕
I used to love it when Joan would perform with her sister Mimi.
Joan Baez is one of the few artists who can just play her guitar and sing. And, captivate an audience of thousands! One of the greatest of our time!
Excellent video analysis and love Joan!!!! 💗🌈✨🎶
