True but I do prefere "Oh Brother" which is a song that answers to Dylan's "Oh Sister" he wrote for her. She is less gentle and sweet as she sounds in "Diamonds and Rust"!
‘Diamonds And Rust’ is a song that needs to be listened to directly from the album, pressed on vinyl, and the sound resonating from a stylus, gliding along the inner grooves, pouring out a pair of speakers straight into your ears.
She's supremely accomplished musically; one of the best folk rockers ever. I always thought her politics was a little contrived but compared to today she's just another liberal performer. There are some real nutcases out there in 2024. But I never paid attention to any performer's politics, if they had this kind of talent I couldn't care less. Imagine not listening to Streisand simply because she's a lefty; she and Baez had the most perfect voices of the era. Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, they all were in a class of their own and held a special place in my eclectic music library.
@Donald And civil rights too. And I forgot about "Joe Hill"! Such a haunting song. Gonna have to go listen to it for the first time in years. Glad you suggested it.💙
That's where I first discovered her, the old Woodstock movie, recognized probably years after I'd seen it in the old movie Omega Man (Still a favorite of mine), a Charlton Heston movie. It's the one they spoofed on the Simpsons, sitting in a theater eating popcorn quietly so as not to bother all the skeletons watching the movie. 😂. Being an old metalhead, I first heard this from Judas Priest.
My favorite part is “now I see you standing with brown leaves falling all around and snow in your hair, now you’re smiling out the window of that crummy hotel over Washington Square, our breath comes out white clouds, mingles and hangs in the air, speaking strictly for me we both could have died then and there.” This is called painting a picture with words.
Yes, thank you for bringing that. So much to try and remember about an icon like Joan Baez. I saw her frequently in the Bay Area....she lived in the beautiful foothills around Stanford U. She performed frequently all the big concerts.
Bob Dylan was not cheating on anyone by having an "affair" with Joan Baez. Neither of them were married, and he was actually still healing from a broken heart when they first met and eventually had a romantic relationship. Baez admitted she was venting feelings from her held resentment, harbored hurt/ anger towards Bob when she wrote Diamonds and Rust. It must have been a great catharsis for her because eventually she got back on the good foot and as friends with Bob once again. Btw, the production value is incredible for the whole album. To this day I consider it one of the best produced studio recordings/albums I have ever heard.

well he married Sara Lowndes after being with baez but met her while he was with Baez... But who cares, this is life...
The phrase "strayed into my arms" is not referring to a Dylan straying from a relationship into a love affair with Baez. It is referring to the happenstance and almost accidental and periodic relationship that they had. Dylan never committed to her.
Dylan had deep feelings for Joan but didn't want to get dragged into the politics of the civil rights movement Baez was pushing him towards. So he broke away from her and her scene.
Agreed. My interpretation of “"strayed into my arms" suggests a serendipitous meeting . . . two ships passing in the night -- but, in this case, a brushing of elbows at a folk festival (I was gonna say, “caught in the same section of a revolving door,” but that sounds ridiculous!). [On third thought, let’s just roll the tape back to “serendipitous”. . .).
I love the version from 98 Meltdown with Ripper Owens singing. He's actually from fairly nearby where I live and a guy I work with said that he used to work with him a while back.

@@markmurphy558 I waited on his table when he was in Austin in the 70s. He was an asshole, talented, but NO social skills. Joan Baez was his superior in many aspects.
The reason Bob called Joan from a booth in the Midwest was because he had just written the lyrics to his song "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts" and he wanted her opinion on them. She later did an incredible cover of it.

I absolutely love the fact that I can easily tell that you are a true music lover. This song, Diamonds and Rust has been one of most favorite songs for , gosh, well over forty years. My older sister played it for me at a very young age and it really spoke to me. It has influenced my own music, quite a bit. Jamal, thanks for being you. You have had me go back and listen to things I'd not heard in so long...things that are really important to me and helped shape my life. I hope they help shape yours as well, as I suspect they do. It can only enrich your life, and help you too understand other people and enjoy the diversity of music from all around the world. Cheers to you!
Made me think about another Joan : Joan Armatrading and the song is called "Woncha come on home". It's almost the only song i know from her, but it's beautiful.
I hit the 'like' button before you even started. I've been waiting for someone to react to this video FOREVER. Joan Baez (pronounced By-ez) and Bob Dylan were lovers for a short period of time in the day. This song about him after the breakup. Very deep. You can feel her pain. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for hearing her at her best.
The musical term for what you like about her voice is Vibrato. You should definitely check out her songs Love Is Just A Four Letter Word, Lovesong To A Stranger & her version of We Shall Overcome
BTW, back in the early 1960s, Joan Baez was referred to by the rock, / music press as the (:folk singer) "madonna" This was in reference to how she looked and sang back then. That is how she originally got that moniker.
Great recommendation. They did 2 studio versions of D.A.R. from what I recall. I believe the version I liked better was the 1st which was at a different pace than the second...anyone recall this?
Two legends together ! Great album, fabulous Lady I loved at first sight for her voice and integrity. She was a star out from music industry and show business. That was time when we thoughed we'll change the world ... and she was the voice with Bob Dylan and few others of our hangers and hopes . Hugh from Morocco 💖
Thanks again Jamel. You made me feel like the first time I heard this song 40+ years ago. It was wonderful experiencing it anew through your ears and heart. All your reactions make me feel something good. God bless. You're the best reactor anywhere.
Way done here in Australia, I have been blessed to see Joan Baez perform live twice, 40+ years apart. If anything, her voice was even better the second time round. The haunting clarity. The superb poetry. Her Dylan songbook is a treasure trove. Do also take a listen to her Spanish language songs too. I adore her. Jamel, just how young are you any way? You seem to be making so many surprised new discoveries of adored classics. All those years ago, my singing them at bedtime to my now 32 year old daughter clearly paid off as she is now a musician singing folk, rock, jazz, blues, classical in several languages. Welcome to the fold of younger people thrilled and inspired by the exceptional musical depth of the 60s and 70s. 🌟
Thank you so much for reacting to Joan! She is my all time favorite female folk singer and I've been requesting her from you :) . In later years as she sings this song, she has changed the words at the end: I once loved you dearly, but if you're offering me diamonds and rust...well, I'll take the diamonds!" She also does the best Bob Dylan impression of anyone: check out her version of one of his songs Simple Twist of Fate (on her Diamonds and Rust album) to hear it.
If you’re wanting to do more Joan, Birmingham Sunday next! 🙏🙏🙏 (I sent you the link for that one too.) That one is heavy but so important and heartbreaking.
Her brother in law, Richard Farina, wrote the definitive song about the four murdered little Black girls in Birmingham. My parents saw her in ‘ 63 at Town Hall in NYC. Joan is a R+R Hall of Fame inductee, human rights activist and is responsible for the evolution of folk/ rock music. Hauntingly beautiful voice, major guitar skills. Getting more beautiful every year.
Love Joan's voice- amazing!
Hey, Doctor! Look up Joan Baez. Poet, singer, guitarist, Mexican-American, Californian, activist, married to “Chicago Seven” Tom Hayden.
Not Hayden, that was Jane Fonda, Joan was married to David Harris.
My bad.
She’s one of my heroes. Meeting her was a thrill of a lifetime.
@@jimhiatt7555 EXACTLY....but was Harris part of the Chicago Seven...as he did time or was it for just anti war stuff at Stanford as he was the President of the Student Body (talk about back in the day of protests)....I was at SF State in the late 60's..another major hotbed of demonstrations...
Swing Low Sweet Chariot at Woodstock....Joans voice...huntingly beautiful, thanks Jamal.
Love that Joan ! She must not be too uppity because she randomly met a friend of mine at a Dead concert and gave him a serious hug .After all she's "the girl on the half shell" - Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty !
Love love this song! Thank you so much for doing it!!!! Her name pronounced “ Bye-ez”
Masterpiece of a song.
One of my all time favorite songs! I love singing this song acapella. It’s so soothing and meaningful. Great choice for reaction!
What a pretty sad song and what memories it stirs even tonight.
Also, you should know the joy I felt when when I saw you were doing this song. You are truly keeping great music alive
Dear Jamal. The girls don't need a book club, they already wrote it in the songs.
You said that right - sister!
I was lucky to see Joan Baez along with Emmylou Harris at the gig they did in Edinburgh in Princess Street Gardens with Edinburgh Castle overlooking the Ross Band stand it was simply magical!
Luv this song! Great reaction. "One Tin Soldier" by Coven or "Where Have All the Flowers Gone"
Yes!!! To both!!
Agree with "One Tin Soldier" by Coven. (NOT the inferior version by The Original Caste)
Lyric video here: ruclips.net/video/djKjeWg5-vk/видео.html
pronounced Bi-ez Joan Baez is one of the greats!
Jamel, there was no cheating involved in either of their parts - they had met when they were both single and had a relationship. A fantastic song, and another great reaction!
and they were very young too!!
You never let us down with these and I can tell that you love this song as much as many of us!!
Her poetry was never lousy. As you can tell from the imagery here. Dylan acted like a jerk.
I met Bob Dylan much later in his career, when he was into his Jesus Freak phase in NYC. He was drunk and a pompous ass, but of course nobody called him out. HE WAS BOB EFFIN' DYLAN.
@@markmurphy558 ....the unwashed phenomenon.
@@markmurphy558 I waited on his table when he was in Austin in the 70s. He was an asshole, talented, but NO social skills. Joan Baez was his superior in many aspects.
Thank You Thank You Jamel. Love her voice, but this song was so beautiful. She loved Dylan
The reason Bob called Joan from a booth in the Midwest was because he had just written the lyrics to his song "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts" and he wanted her opinion on them. She later did an incredible cover of it.
Yeah a live one which is on her double Live Lp "From Every Stage"! It is an awsome cover of "Lily Rosemary and the Jack Of Heart"
One of my favorite albums ever.
"Hauntingly" beautiful😀
She is a gifted singer and love her still today. It was the sixties and a different time of Love, Sex and Rock and Roll.
I remember it being sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Then again, if I remember it, did it happen? :D
You finally did it, I’ve been wanting you to hear this poetry for so long. It’s Baaaaa ez.
From the same album, i know it's a cover (originally by RObert Flack), but her version of "Jesse" is so beautiful. Her voice is amazing. Pure magic.
And also the "cover of "i never dreamed you'd leave in summer" from Stevie Wonder.
"Jesse" was written by Janis Ian, not Roberta Flack who covered it so beautifully!
@ Ah yes true. My mistake ;)
OMG I can't believe you reacted to this!! My late best friend introduced me to this album when I was about 14. We played it til we wore it out. Thanks for the memories. 😊✌️
Her name is pronounced "Bi - azz" ; and not only did she write this song about Bob, he wrote one about her: check out "Shelter From The Storm"..... You're welcome!! Blessed Be, & Peace!
Is that about Joan? I always thought Sara.
what a load of crap

@@annakermode6646 She actually said it’s about Dylan😉
@@Jonni1027 I'm talking about Shelter from the Storm.
'the girl on the half shell' Joan Baez is referring to, is the renaissance artist Botticelli's painting of the arrival of Venus.
Great song and album. Joni, Joan and checkout Judy Collins as well.
Yes!!!
Suzanne would be a great Judy Collins song. I prefer Cohen's version, but hers is beautiful.
How about Linda Ronstadt
@@matthewdrake4385 Absolutely...thanks for the reminder. And lets not forget Janis Ian as well.
How about Janis Joplin too
Ooooohhh! So happy you listen and respond, here from a "Hippie" from way back when.
One of my all-time favs. Joan Baez was an icon of the anti Vietnam War movement, Civil Rights of the 60s, 70s. Her and Bob were a classic pairing. Her name is Joan (BY-EZ) Baez. She is a legend like Bob.
Oh Jamel, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I also was one who wanted you to react to Miss Baez!! I feel the same every time I hear her sing this song...so haunting & YES pain...feel like I was there watching their relationship develop before & after "THE FALL"...
OH... that tremor in her voice is called vibrato...said she never had to practice to achieve that beautiful sound...was God given!!
"Bi-EZZ" accent on the second syllable. Legendary folksinger. Also a peace & civil rights activist. Her version of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is haunting.✌☮💙🌿💚
Accent on the first syllable.

Other great Joan Armatrading songs - "Down to Zero" and "Love & Affection" - check them out. Saw Joan A. in concert about '76 - fantastic!
Soooo many gorgeous songs from Joan Armatrading! I second Love and Affection.
@@genevieveking8819 We HAVE to get Jamel to react to the 1976 live version of Love and Affection.
The BEST is "The Weakness in Me"
PLEASE DO ANOTHER JOAN BAEZ REACTION I BEG OF YOU LOL this is the best, try to bobby or oh brother!!!
Jackson Browne- 'Fountain of Sorrow', there's a story song.
Baez sings this song in her Diamonds and Rust album.
Fountain of Sorrow is about Joni Mitchell.
@@murraywestenskow2896 Interesting. Makes sense now.
A legendary phenomenal song!👍🏻❤️☮️
I love Baez. This is the first reaction I've gotten to see to one of hers
Joan Baez introduced Bob Dylan to the world and took him on tour, she was famous before Bob. She also picked a beautiful guitar through this song.
Love this song so much. Thanks for doing it. I couldn't get enough of seeing first time listens to this song.
Now react to Judas Priest's version of Diamonds And Rust. Listen to the one from Unleashed In The East. It's awesome!
Great recommendation. They did 2 studio versions of D.A.R. from what I recall. I believe the version I liked better was the 1st which was at a different pace than the second...anyone recall this?
There is a live version where they're a little older. Halford nails it.
ruclips.net/video/mIC7KQPDuDc/видео.html
A classic version from one of the greatest live rock albums. Halford kills it!
not the Unplugged version
Ahh you beat me to the Priest reference.
You seem to be checking out the sixty’s women. Joni and Joan. Check out “Universal Soldier “ by Buffy Saint Marie. You won’t be disappointed.
yes! buffy is amazing!
Buffy is a Cree indian from Canada, she did many songs portraying the plight of the indians such as " Now that the Buffalo's gone".
Universal soldier is an anthem for US! 😎
The rabbit hole is deep! Joan Baez is the soundtrack of my formative years here in the Philippines!
If you like the style of her voice, you'd probably also like Fairport Convention -- "Tam Lin" is a great song.
Crazy Man Michael makes me cry without fail.
@Joe Lleyton Sandy Denny was incredible. What a shame we lost her so young...
I enjoy your videos so much! Thank you for keeping great music alive!!
Gotta listen to Judas version
Joan Baez is amazing! My favorites from her are Forever Young, Stewball, and Amazing Grace . But especially Forever Young!!
Sharon! Yes!! I used to name every toy horse I had Stewball growing up because I love that song so much. 💙💙💙
My favorites are "Silver Danger," "Long Black Veil, Stewball, and "Diamonds and Rust.
Wonderful singer, wonderful song. For more of Joan I'd put Forever Young - Guantanamera - Swing Low Sweet Chariot ( at Woodstock) out there.
In later years as she sings this song, she has changed the words at the end: I once loved you dearly, but if you're offering me diamonds and rust...well, I'll take the diamonds!"
She also does the best Bob Dylan impression of anyone: check out her version of one of his songs Simple Twist of Fate (on her Diamonds and Rust album) to hear it.
They came home outraged because she “ dragged some ragamuffin who couldn’t sing up on stage”. Hee- they witnessed an early Dylan performance!
@@TheDivayenta yes, that song is everything!! Omg I love that story about your parents!!!! 😂😂😂 That is classic!!! My dad saw her perform at his high school and she signed his school ID because he didn’t have anything else for her to write on.
