  • A lot of people have asked me how effective Microsoft Flight simulator is for instrument training so in today's video, we are going to do a quick hop from Mountain Home Muni to Gowen in Boise where we'll shoot an ILS approach in IMC.
    As you'll see, thanks to some of the add-on products that I use with MSFS2020, the experience is nothing short of amazing; not to mention, highly realistic!

    👋 About Me 👋
    After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. Once my flight training is done, I will work as an independent CFI until I have reached the 1500 hours needed to get hired by one of the above. You can learn more at www.FlyWithTrent.com.

    100% I love MSFS for IFR work, especially in VR. We all know how effective "chair flying" can be and the sims add the time compression and cadence to it.

    I know this an older video, but I just came across it the other day. Like you, I chose aviation as a second career, and at 46 I needed to move fast so I chose ATP. It is a very demanding program and you must sometimes teach yourself in order to stay caught up. You are correct, MSFS 2020 has helped me immensely while going through the instrument training. Sometimes you only see a certain approach once or twice and you might not fully grasp all the concepts…like a DME arc or a circle to land. You can get on the flight sim and fly it repeatedly until you have it down.

    I really enjoyed this! I learned on the ol' 6 pack and have not flown more than 4 hours on a glass system. I like these videos because it helps me to see how to interact with the equipment better. I've also, never flown with auto pilot (those 4 hours of glass were in an autopilot equipped archer but I didn't get to use it).

    Hey, Trent! Been following your channel for a while, really like the content, and especially this in particular.
    MSFS Tip - you can request a specific approach in the ATC panel...this normally resolves the issue with atc giving altitudes contrary to the approach minimums... usually... but your mileage may vary, can't guarantee 100%

    Hi! I just purchased the new Xbox and started flying yesterday on the sim using my Xbox controller. Im a new instrument student and this is just great. Thanks for posting this= this is the video i was hoping to find before i learn stuff about IFR this week with my new cfi ill be working with. This video was very much helpful to me and I can’t wait to get into the advanced side of IFR training.

    Adding PilotEdge is an absolute game changer for me. I struggled with my Radio Coms and it pairs real ATC controllers with the Sim in real time. They also have thier Cat and IFR ratings to train you. Its pricey but worth every peny in my book

      watched the entire 40 minutes, loved how you tied the real flying to the simulator... i'm a pilot (not IFR rated) and i don't have the time to fly and stay safe... I have a top of the line VR setup and I use it almost daily as a way to stay "in the know" and just relax at night@@trent_dyrsmid

    I have used MSFS since I started training. I'm not IFR yet but it helps in in the VFR world for flows and such. Maneuvers can be tough but all good. pattern work and doing flight plans are great. I love to be able to fly places I haven't yet or will. I don't do VR yet since I have gauges and such that work for my 152 and archer training aircraft well. on the glass instruments I've heard knobs can be annoying, you seemed to do well with them. I keep thinking VR is the way to go though. what headset are you using, Trent? great videos as always!

    This was fantastic. I couldn't decide if MSFS was worth the trouble for IFR training, now i can see that it is. I need help getting set up.
    I have done enough to complete a couple "VOR flowers" as demonstrated by Flight Insight. A couple 5 min videos on setting setting up the VR goggles and getting the approach plates while wearing the VR goggles would be helpful.
    Thanks for the video.

    Hey Trent, I’ve got a modest flight sim set up at home. Currently finishing up my private pilot course. What recommendations do you have for using the sim for the private course? I’m mainly just been practicing maneuvers and performance takeoffs/landings and emergency engine failures. What’s the best use of time in your opinion?

    • @BAVIATE
      @BAVIATE 6 месяцев назад

      And are there any warnings against using sim in our flight training? For example, bad habits that can form from getting used to the sight picture from a screen without all the motions of the plane?

    • @trent_dyrsmid
      @trent_dyrsmid  6 месяцев назад +1

      Use the simulator to practice everything that you would be doing in the real world.

    What’s your system specs? Would love to get into VR but afraid my specs are too low. It’s more than minimum requirements for VR, but I’ve heard of people with RTX4090’s struggling to get good frame rates when playing VR. I only have a RTX2060.

    I liked the video but it was hard to follow along with exactly what you were doing because there was too much back and forth movement between the displays. Also I had my resolution turned all the way up to 1080p and still couldn't make out all the fine detail. If you could correct these items I think I could get a lot more out of it. Thank you.
