  • In this this video, we're comparing the iso performance of the full frame Sony a7c and the aps-c crop sensor Sony a6400.
    Both are using the same lens, the Sony 20mm f1.8 G, and both were shot in the same lighting conditions using the same settings.
    All footage was shot in 4k, 24 fps with no picture profiles or creative styles enabled.

      Maybe you should watch the video on a big display with 4k capabilities. On a phone or a ipad it looks like both perform the same till iso 6400. But it is not the case.
      At iso 400 you see noise in the a6400 footage. The footage of the A7C looks the same with iso 3200. So there is a 3 stops difference which is a big difference. Plus the A7C gets more light in it because of the bigger sensor.
      I also had the a6400 & A6600 and i loved both of them, but the A7C is the better choice in dark light conditions. But both of them have their strengths and weaknesses.
      Thats why I switched to the A7C.

    The good...very good and detailed comparison. The bad...your scene is a little too well lit at ISO 100 to see any meaningful differences in performance between the two sensors at your typical modern-day high ISO range (ISO 1600-12800). Yes, you do see drastic differences beginning at 12800, but most will not be shooting above that. Try this again, but make the lighting low enough that the image is barely visible at ISO 100. Additionally, what was the point of showing the focus issue (which BTW is not focus breathing since you were not pulling focus, the camera was just unable to lock focus). It's great that you pointed out the EV level at which the autofocus begins to have issues, but the test was about high ISO, not low light autofocus. It would have been better to set the focus manually or locked focus on both cameras to avoid the issue altogether. Good video. Thanks for taking the time to put this comparison together.

    It would be interesting if you could compare A7c + 24mm 1.8 vs A6400 + Sigma 16mm 1.4. They would have approximately similar pov as well as the amount of light on the sensor (1.8 on FF vs 1.4 on apsc). I think then the difference would be smaller, and would bi nice to see that. But of course A7c is much better and would win again but for a price. Thanks for review.

    • @andreas1701d
      @andreas1701d  3 года назад

      Hey thanks for watching!
      The a6000 is very comparable to the a6400 in iso performance, though not quite as good. I'd say the equivalent maximum "usability" is about 3200 on the a6000 vs about 12,800 on the a7c, though it obviously depends on shooting conditions and your subject.
      I was planning to do a direct comparison between the a6000 and a7c, so that'll probably help you out more than this video, going beyond just an ISO comparison: sharpness, low light capability, battery life, colours, etc.
      I should be able to get that video up in the next few weeks.

    Very detail comparision. I'm a Canon user I plan to switch to Sony with a tight budget and I have some question. What is the maximum usability iso on the original sony a7?? how many stops higher the a7 could go? which perform better in the low light condition and is the A7 still worth buying in your opinion? (street and potrait ).Ty !

    • @andreas1701d
      @andreas1701d  2 года назад

      Hey thanks for watching!
      I think for street and portrait, you're going to want something faster than an a7. The AF speed as well as the 5 fps burst will be limitations for sure.
      If you absolutely want full frame, your cheapest bet with good AF and a minimum of 10 fps would still be the a7III/a7c.
      My suggestion if you're on a really tight budget is the a6000, actually. It'll cost a third of what an a7II would, and half what an a7 would. Spend the difference on glass, even full frame glass if you think you'll go that route some day.
      The AF of the a6000 is very quick even by 2022 standards, though it doesn't have the latest real-time tracking, and it shoots 11 fps. Being an APSC sensor, it'll also crop in to give you more reach relative to full frame. It's also much smaller and easier to carry, and has slightly better (though not great) battery life to a similar generation full frame camera.
      Arthur R's channel has a really good video talking about the reasons not to buy the a7 today (some of which I listed above). He also has a video comparing all the different generations of a7 cameras.
      Let me get you those links...

      @@danhkiet19 In the case of going from what you have to the a7, i get it... makes sense. The a6000 will give you roughly twice the ISO performance over the 600D, while the a7 will be closer to 4 times. The a7 will also give you +1 fps burst, a faster mechanical shutter and as you mentioned, both will provide better AF, though the a6000 will be snappier than the a7.
      Imho, going for the a6300 over the a6000 only makes sense for the video capabilities of the a6300. The a6300 also has some weather sealing, the a6000 has virtually none. Hey thanks for watching! I'm not entirely sure I understand your question.
      If you're asking if iso does the same thing on both APSC and full frame, the answer is yes.
      If you're asking if both have the same iso values, that is dependent on each camera model but most these days go from about 100 to 104,000.
      If you're asking if the quality is the same, I think the video should be able to show you the difference at each iso fairly well.

      @@funkyboogiee it's important to note when you're calculating equivalence of aperture, it only relates to depth of field. An f1.8 lens will let in the same amount of light on APSC and full frame; in other words, exposure will not be different.
      The same goes for iso. The "brightness" of a given iso will be identical on the two sensors. What will change is how much noise each sensor produces at that given iso.

      Hey thanks for watching! I'll try to get my hands on a ZV E10, but it should be very similar to this in terms of iso performance. The sensor is identical to the a6400

      i wouldn't expect any different results from the ones above since the ZV e10 has the same same sensor as a6400
