She looks so unhappy. Good thing she switched to college gymnastics. Edit: Just read the some of the other comments. Interesting how everyone else thinks she looks miserable to. The college route was definitely the best decision for her 😥
elite sports are so toxic, it's so sad. She's amazing, one of the best gymnasts in the world, and just for doing not-perfect-perfect in one time in a routine that 0,000000000000000001% of people can do, she's seen as a failure. It's heartbraking.
I'm a pianist and this is why I don't want to start competing and stuff in piano, bcs then it'll become less about the joy and more about making that perfect performance for the judges, and if you make one mistake ur a failure even if you're actually amazing
Elite GYMNASTICS is very toxic. I am heavily involved in the elite world of track and field- and it is an amazing environment. Yes, there is the occasional “bad apple” coach, but athletes rarely stick with them for long so they don’t tend to get very far. Our USA track team is a world power like few others, and we do it without being cruel to the athletes. Gymnastics is just an abhorrently abusive, toxic and disrespectful sport in general to its athletes.
1:55 Honestly this makes my blood boil. He gave her a very challenging routine, which she executed very well, and he has the audacity to roll his eyes at her !? I’m so happy she doesn’t do Elite anymore, she’s an amazing gymnast and deserves to be happy doing while doing it.
i think what i find most amazing about this routine is how perfectly she transfers to the low bar at 0:48. it's like the bar is made of metal and her hands are magnets.
i kind of drifted away from watching gymnastics for a while and i didn't even recognise katelyn when her UCLA video went viral because i was SO USED to seeing her gloomy expressions while competing at the elite level i just thought she was one of those who didn't really like to smile. what a difference.
To this day I can't believe Valeri made her do those difficult L grip pirouettes. It's painfully obvious she wasn't ready for them, or just doesn't have the shoulder flexibility to pull them off. also Tim wtf "just a little bit past handstand"
I don't know if it was here or not, but I know at one point, she was competing with two torn shoulders and a broken back. I could fully see this routine contributing to that.
That coach would break me too. SO GLAD you found a fierce lioness as your new coach who could help you on the path of healing and true self worth. Bless you always Katelyn!! 🤸🏽♀️👍🏽💗🌈🌻
Also does anyone notice how the floor music happening during this event gets incorporated into her senior college routine? I wonder if this event was part of the decision-making process for which songs to include. Because it's really symbolic of her ability to overcome the toxic environment she was in and really own the way SHE does gymnastics today.
I much rather have Nastia commentating than Elfie. Elfie is too critical and harsh whereas Nastia who is an American AND an AA champion has more compassion and still has the knowledge. She reminds me of Kathy Johnson who was also a great commentator.
It's sad, I don't think she'll make the next Olympics because of all the injuries she's had and I don't think she cares either. I saw an interview where she said she wants to go to college and take it easy. I wish she could have gone in 2012 when she really peaked. She had so much talent.

I wish Katelyn trained under Chow instead of Valeri. Look at the difference between Katelyn's elite outcome and Shawn Johnson's. Valeri pushed Katelyn into doing all these spins when it was obvious that she didn't have the flexible shoulders like Nastia to execute them well. Chow on the other hand, focused on helping Shawn perfect a simpler routine. The most important thing was that Chow made his gym a healthy mental environment, Norah Flatley, a UCLA gymnast that trained with Chow during her elite career, said that she always felt comfortable telling Chow about injuries or being too tired, and he would adjust the training to make sure he doesn't worsen her injuries, which now that the USA gymnastics scandel is out, shows that this is almost unheard of
1:54 . did he really expect her to stick that dismount? it takes a lot of focus. that’s how u make up bad gymnastics. by pressuring them and thinking they failed
She’s amazing, so incredibly competent, skilled and executes beautifully. She’s capable of absolute perfection, but it’s just so unforgiving that it simply isn’t a joyful experience. I experienced the same in my work and decided to make myself happy elsewhere. Who are we doing anything for? If commenters, judges, coaches, even fans - who would be unlikely to execute the same - judge so harshly, who is it for? I think she made an excellent choice to do things her way rather than the expected path of the most capable. If joy is taken out of the experience by the scrutiny, then maybe structures should change rather than the individuals. Being capable of also dealing with the stress should not be part of the criteria to being an elite athlete or anything else for that matter. We’ve got things wrong so far.
Am I the only one who's kinda annoyed by people saying "She's much happier in UCLA"? I mean, she obviously is. She is not stressed anymore by the really harsh training she was going through (which every single elite gymnast goes through in this world) and the fact that she was also injured while doing that. But at the same time she's never gonna be an Olympic champion. She's not gonna become part of gymnastic history for her skills but rather because of "how harsh elite gymnastic training can be", which is something we all already know in 2020 (and if you don't that means you've never been interested in gymnastic in your life before). So saying "she's much happier now" is quite disrespectful to her. She didn't leave her passion because she wanted to but because she had to, which is really damn sad and it's not something someone should feel joyful about. You wanna be an Olympic champion but that requires for you to have harsh moments sometimes? Better be an amateur then! Abandoning your dreams in order to be "happy"... But how can you be happy by abandoning your dreams? 😢
she was mentally abused by coaches and it ended with her developing multiple eating disorders and having to quit elite gymnastics, her routines were great but she was so unhappy
Katelyn didn't care, though. It wasn't just the injuries, he caused her to develope and eating disorder. The girl wasn't eating and also had bulimia. They made her sign a contract to not gain weight or else she couldn't train. Got kicked out many times out of practice for weighting more than last time. He weights them. She was being abused. Now she is much happier in college. and healthy. she smiles now lol
This was a good routine for her! Even though this is a good routine for the Americans it will still pose a problem for the Americans on bars particularly with the Russians who are capable of SV over 7.0
She looked better then but you can see she was unhappy so I guess it’s good she left elite. It’s too bad though because I think she would have won gold.
