The C96 Broomhandle: A Thing of Beauty

  • The C96 "Broomhandle" is truly a thing a beauty. This 120 year old design comes from an era when it took a factory staffed by hundreds to create a single pistol, all having made a single pass on a single component.
    The C96 is an amalgamation of 34 parts working in perfect harmony that to this day deserves to be revered. Invented by the Feederle brothers, this classic handgun is a piece that everyone should fire once.
    Bonus full auto footage of an M712 "Schnellfeuer".

    I've been debating for a long time whether I prefer the C96 or the Luger... and after all this time I still haven't decided. The Luger definitely wins in the ergonomics department, it fits my hand like a glove. As strange as the C96 is, though, I really enjoy how it points and I absolutely love the trigger on it. Something about it is more 'snappy' than the Luger, from the crispness of the trigger pull to the way it recoils and the hissing sound it makes when it fires. The fact that the C96 doesn't have detachable magazines is a bit of an inconvenience, but to tell the truth, I prefer the ones with fixed mags. This way they feel more boxy and solid, which is the main aesthetic of the gun. I just recently got my hands on one of these for the first time, so it's hard to say if what I'm feeling right now is simply infatuation or a romance destined to be by the cosmos. I've had my Luger for 2 years now and I still love it, but I think I may prefer my C96, at least for now. We'll see how I feel about it in another two years.

      It's also wa-ay more powerful than luger!Especially when it comes to piercing capabilities!Although there are AP rounds for 9mm in existence and some of those are pretty good (Russian tungsten carbide sabots with enhanced loads actually go through one centimeter of any armor steel when fired out of a pistol)-but if you make the same design for 7,63×25-you will always get more than from 9mm!
      So I used to carry a full size conehammer C-96 produced in 1897 for quite a while and it's really the best!

    My grandfather was a pilot in WWII and brought one of these pistols home. It was given to him by a wounded GI after my GF had inquired about it. That, along with his Ithaca .45 in it's original shoulder holster, flag, and medals were given to me after he passed. While both guns are in excellent condition, I have fired the .45, but I have yet to fire the Mauser.

    There are those of us who have either/and/or the 7.63mm/9mm that cannot afford to burn rounds downrange (2020/21 primer shortage ftl), and it is a guilty pleasure to come here and luxuriate in the melodic sounds of that beautiful bottleneck cartridge. Only those of us who have a C96 recognize that clicky-clack of a stripper clip into that box magazine, that distinctive report, that slight flippiness of the muzzle, and the joy of having an old functional warhorse over 105 years old. Respect. Thank you.

      +Matthew Pham There are plenty of full auto weapons.
      The maps are extremely varied, not just European trench warfare. You got Arabia, trenches, the Alps, probably the eastern front, forests…
      The vehicles will be feared and powerful, as they should be in a Battlefield game, and as they were in WW1.
      All I'm not looking forward to is the influx of disappointed COD players getting their parents to buy the game for their 12 year old asses.

    • @matthewpham9525
      @matthewpham9525 8 лет назад

      Toby Wood
      Plenty of full auto weapons? Most of the weapons utilized by infantryman were bolt action rifles, full auto small arms didn't appear until late in the war. Tanks were also not effectively used until 1916, they'll be fairly limited for most of the game assuming it includes most of the war. You are right about the varied maps, however, they may not be used due to the lack of the US.

    • @Ashfielder
      @Ashfielder 8 лет назад

      +Matthew Pham The US is going to be on the game, that's confirmed, and the game will have weapons from all throughout the war. It's a game designed to be more fun than historically accurate, so weapons from 1918 can be used on a map set in 1915.

      +Matthew Pham Also, the tanks will probably be devastating. It's not like in BF4 where every man, woman, and dog has an RPG. There will be a few Mauser T Rifles and anti tank grenades, but the vehicles have been described as "something to be feared, as they should be" by developers. The combination of heavy cannon combines with multiple smaller MGs on one vehicle will be a force to be reckoned with against infantry and cavalry.

    Found it interesting, the hangtime the brass has. The last five rounds fired from the backup one in the stock, then hearing the brass casings impacting the ground. Nice.

    I've wanted one of these since reading Jon Sable: Freelance by Mike Grell way back in the 80's.
    I'd pay for a new one, with a new barrel, detachable box mags. Just don't want to deal with a shot-out one, which is all I've found at gun shows locally.
    Nice tee shirt, by the way :)

    I agree with Mr Putnam regarding having a second gun in the stock was really great 👍 I bought a C96 years back at a gun show. I met a vendor who was very knowledgeable and had quite a collection of C96’s. After a while he asked me if I could watch his table while he hit the mens room. I was surprised that he trusted me and told me his friend a couple of tables away could handle any possible sales. He was gone about 20 minutes and when he returned he asked if I wanted to by a C96. I told him I didn’t have the money for such a pistol. I guess he wanted me to have one because for $175.00 I got a “parts” C96,holster and 500 rounds of 7.63 x 25 ammo. I still have it and enjoy shooting it. I recently took it to a range and the girl at the check in said “wow that looks like Han Solo’s blaster “. So it does!!
