Can you beat Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness with only Footmen?

  • Now that I've done grunts, its time to try out footmen! Can Warcraft's most insulted unit get the redemption they deserve, or will enemy juggernauts and walls stop them from killing the horde?
    Beyond the Dark Portal is next, which promises to be quite a bit more interesting, as the levels get MUCH tougher! Hope you enjoy, and I'll see you all next time!

    I love how every old rts challenge video has the moment of. "And then the ai had a stroke that I didn't cause on purpose". Like a lot of them you are trying ot break the ai, but in these old game, it just breaks itself sometimes.

      Its true, lol. The warcraft 2 AI is held together by duct tape and glue. This is not going to be the last time it breaks in this series for reasons I cannot explain.

      I don't remember the game being quite this broken back when I first played it in the 90s. Its probably just nostalgia clouding my memory, but I wonder if something about modern PCs subtly breaks the game in ways that contemporary systems didn't.

      Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed! One thing I've learned while trying these challenge runs is that you can never be completely sure of what is possible until you try it. I was pretty terrified of getting stonewalled by naval combat too, but it turns out transports and towers are pretty effective ways of getting around it. This is true even in Beyond the Dark Portal. My biggest enemy in these runs wasn't battleships or dragons, but instead turned out to be the neutral passive walls, just because the pathfinding gives no favors in terms of helping you deal with them.

    On the final level, Death Knights hate being observed by flying machines. Once you've gotten your anti-dragon defense stabilized, build two flying machines and park them over Black's units along the route the Death Knights would have to take to get to your base. The Death Knights won't go into the area the flying machines can see, and they won't use whirlwind on them when they are over their own units.

      I remember watching a Meet the Fans Q&A panel given by Samwise, during SC2's development. The theme of the panel was Narrative & Storytelling. Twice during the panel, Samwise asked fans (who had actually read the instruction booklet co-written by Samwise that came with Starcraft 1), to explain what their questions were even asking about. Bro didn't read up on 10 booklet pages of his own writing, for his own Q&A. So your joke dialogue is probably not far from what really happened!

    • @redwings13400

      It definitely helped a lot in wc3. I probably underutilized it because I thought (incorrectly apparently) that it also decreased attack speed, so I only tried to use it on footmen being targeted there.
      Having said that, footmen in wc3 are way more understatted compared to everything else in the game than footmen in wc2 are to other units. My army in wc2 never felt super underpowered stat wise with footmen, the issue was almost purely the awful pathfinding

      Thank you, glad you're enjoying it! Warcraft 2 is a game that shows off the growing pains of trying to develop a really good rts. The pathfinding is awful, unit selection and spellcasting ui is archaic compared to future games, asymetrical balance isn't a thing yet, and micro is ridiculously challenging. However, its also still a game I find really fun despite its shortcomings. When you go from WC1, WC2, Starcraft, WC3, and SC2, you really see how the dev teams learned from each game and were able to build off their previous successes and mistakes. In my opinion, WC3 and SC2 are essentially perfections of the genre that the other games helped build up to.

    I just beat the Human campaign with only Elven Archers. I don't have a video and I can't prove it, but it is possible if anyone else wants to try it. Level 10 (the prisoner transport) took three or four tries because I kept running out of gold before I could successfully assault Blue's base. I also was able to do the dark portal level using just 6 knights and 6 footmen instead of the using the ships and all the units (Not truely footmen only, but closer to the spirit of the challenge I think). It took me quite a few tries as some attempts all my 12 units would die, and sometimes like 9 would survive with low hp. Once I got past the beach part I just built up hiding behind guard towers. I did mine in a single run with no saves, I wonder if reloading gets black's dark knight ai to break. (Also using flying machines to use up black's dark knight mana is genius)

      I just looked and its still up! Obviously this guide didn't address how to beat the campaigns with only footmen or only grunts, but some of my strategies are adapted from that guide, and its a pretty cool piece of internet history.

    Would be interesting to see a separate video on human 14 where you play the case where black does send Death and Decay. It makes everything so much harder and would be interesting to see how you would deal with it. Also make a rule that you must kill everything that is not footman or peasant as soon as orange ogres are taken out. • @redwings13400
      @redwings13400  7 месяцев назад

      My first thoughts here is that it would definitely be super challenging. I’d have to spread out towers to prevent a big clump from being hit with death and decay at once, and get very lucky with enemy dragon movement. My guess is that 99% of the time I’d just get overwhelmed by dragons and death and decay in like a minute, but maybeeeee there’s some super lucky scenario where dragons take a while to find my base, I’m able to lure death and decay on to individual towers, or even an able to somehow lure death knights to run past a guard tower, getting shot as they try to destroy structures in the back?
      This definitely sounds extremely painful. If I could survive the start it would get easier over time, but just getting past a couple minutes in the level sounds brutal lol.

      Yes. I sometimes even die with out that footman restriction. Might be possible if you would modify random generator to ask you every time what it should return so that you have 100% control over random. If you would restrict yourself to only return values that are actually possible for random to generate then the video would still represent what would be theoretically possible (just extremely unlikely to occur) in such case. It can do the initial rescue every time but unlike in TAS video it fails to walk ogres the path that would cause them to be hit by their own catapult like in TAS video. Because of rng.
