  • How best can you achieve the richness and beauty of traditional oil paints in your digital artwork? I've been studying for years, and I'm finally starting to make sense of a few methods, one of which I'll share with you today! We will look at four (4) painting programs, and see the similarities in getting the desired effect!
Also note, you should be able to use this method with ANY digital painting software, as the theory and principles carry over to any form of painting, whether digital or traditional.

I am new to digital art as well as art in general. Came across your channel and I am beyond surprised at how you aren’t at least at 100k. Watched a few of your videos and I’m so thankful I found this channel. I’m grateful for the amount of time and the depth you put into your videos. I usually found myself finding it hard to retain information in the tutorials and yt videos I’ve watched, but so far I’ve enjoyed and understood your videos just fine.
Thank you so very much for all that you share and create :)

Good to see a Krita segment. Been painting up a storm lately. All these videos point the way for me. Kudos :)

This is great. I could have used this video a month or so ago. I've been using Adobe Fresco and it's live oil paint brushes and really like it. Watching this first would have saved me some of the learning curve!

Great video! I think this will be a game changer for me. I just don't work at it enough. I need to do more color picking and not have big portions of the painting that are the same color. Its a matter of lots of tiny variations with the same value, and it just takes work. Damn. You nailed it.

Thank you tons, my friend! Yeah, I've found a great "easy" hack for some visual interest is finding any area of your painting that seems "flat" (or has a lack of visual interest), and do this trick. You can even use a thicker "impasto" brush with the SAME color, and just "scribble" some brushwork in there. It's amazing how much impact even a little bit of texture can make!

Great video Wesley. I learned quite a bit in regards to your thought process. Your comments about values also resonated with me. I have been guilty of straying off the value path a few times and then finding myself painting twice as much to correct it. I definitely need to upgrade my tools after watching this, ArtRage Vitae seems like a huge jump in quality from ArtRage 4.

I am very new to digital art and wanted to pursue this as a serious hobby to start. I bought artrage for iPad and searching tutorials for Artrage, I came accross your channel, so glad to find you here and loved your videos and your explaination. I want to purchase a desktop version as there are limitations on iPad, but am not sure which one to invest into Artrage or Rebelle 7 Pro, if you can guide me, I will appreciate. Also I dont see any recent videos on Artrage (they are all 1 year plus old) compared to Rebelle where I see a video almost every day.

Hey there, welcome to the channel!! So the latest version of ArtRage for desktop is "ArtRage Vitae", and it's only available via the Microsoft Store and Apple macOS store - www.artrage.com/new-in-artrage-vitae/
Out of the two, I'd recommend Rebelle 7 Pro as the developer support is still VERY active, while ArtRage's support has been in a primarily "fix bugs and maintenance" support mode for the past few years (which can also explain the lack of newer ArtRage videos online, as there's been no real updates of it to speak of).
Whichever you choose, I think you'll have a great time!

My problem with canvas textures, specially with oils, is that with real oils, the impasto would end up totally covering fully even the thickest grain, so, an overlay layer system, while effective, in that case it might not end up as realistic. I mean, among painters, as I am 100% sure that most people when seeing the canvas grain will feel the "traditional vibe" a lot more, without giving it a second thought. Any relief you would see would be due to chunks of paint, with its bumps and etc. Even acrylics, unless thinning paint a lot with water or a medium, the matter would end up covering all, after some layers. Still, I can see paper and canvas texture more usable - and very realistic- when it's watercolor, or ink, etc (or many dry techniques). Something light and liquid enough that would not end up filling all, like oil does. BTW, oil is my favorite technique, be it traditional or mimicking it digitally.

Great vid! I'm currently working on getting comfortable in Rebelle -- do you happen to have your brush set for that available anywhere for purchase? (I've gotten your PS packs in the past and they were great!) Would love to experiment with them!

Hey Jenna! So I actually use a majority of the default brushes in Rebelle, and have a mix of brushes from my good friend Daniel Ibanez. He has a few brushes on his Patreon (namely the custom flat brushes I use) that are stellar! I'll look at making a dedicated Rebelle brushpack sometime this summer, though!

For Photoshop, you can make the canvas texture seamless/tiling with the healing brush, generative AI, etc, then make it a pattern fill layer that you can overlay and scale to whatever size you need.
