  • Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to the Fallout (2024) show.
On episode 2 of Fallout we get to see a huge mutated radiated bear, we got to spend some more time with Lucy as she discovers the Wastelands and we got an awesome fight sequence with The Ghoul Vs. Maximus in his newly acquired T-60 suit.
Fallout (2024) is the gripping new Amazon Prime Video series based on the iconic video game. Starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, with visionary direction by Jonathan Nolan, this adaptation brings the beloved game to life in thrilling fashion.
Jonathan Nolan did such a great job bringing this world to life. As newcomers we thought the exposition was delivered in a very simple yet effective manner. The cinematography looked absolutely stunning and the set design is truly out of this world. Lucy is such a magnetic character. Her charisma and values create a stark contrast once she ventures into the real world giving us a fresh take on the fish out of water trope.
Ella Purnell's portrayal of a resilient survivor, Walton Goggins as a cunning antagonist bring depth to this chaotic new world. Jonathan Nolan's direction ensures a cinematic experience, masterfully blending intense drama with the dark humor and iconic elements of the Fallout universe. The show excels in both storytelling and visual spectacle, making it a standout addition to the genre.
We hope you enjoy our reaction, discussion, commentary and review as we delve into the themes and topics that make this show so enjoyable to us.

21:04, yeah theirs been a few references. Like the food you see when lucy is walking into town, theirs actually baked iguana and other foods you can find, make, and eat if you're low on health and out of stimpaks. Also, the weapons that lucy sees on the wall are indeed weapons you can find in the game, the one on top is a junk jet and the one below it is a laser rifle.
While the laser rifle is self-explanatory, the junk jet is unique and is only in fallout 4, (as far as i know). Because you see, in fallout 4, there's a massive crafting system in the game, where you can make a variety of things, from weapon modifications, to armor, to building and maintaining friendly settlements. All you need is the right perks and materials. While perks are earned through leveling up, the materials you must find in the form of junk, which is basically anything handheld and isn't nailed down, if it's both of those things, then you can collect it. But back to the junk jet, what makes it so cool is that any piece of junk you collect can be used as ammunition, from blades to small appliances, to bottles, basket balls, pencils, heck, I've even seen a player take a raider's head off by launching a teddy bear! The junk jet is one of the most wackiest weapons you can get in the game, and there are plenty more like it in fallout 4 and the other fallout games.
Sadly though, the pistol that the ghoul used in the show is not in any of the games. 😔

I can't comment on all the games, but if you're gonna try any I think you should go for Fallout 4, the start of the game will explain a lot. For me, this is very similar to Fallout 4 in so many ways, but like I said I can't comment about the other games. Great reactions though, loving them. "Do we trust the dog though?" made me laugh and I thought "You've seen the thing" just as you mentioned it. 🤣

Lucy talking to the water farmer with her gun pointed at him is actually a neat little nod to the games, where players often leave their weapon equipped when talking to NPCs, so from their perspective they’re talking to someone who has a gun pointed right at their dome the whole time!

One thing I really love about the show is that they don't shy away from how the Brotherhood of Steel suck.
Their whole purpose is to "find and reclaim" old technology for when it's time to rebuild, but (as Tidus points out) they have no moral issue sending thirty people to their deaths to find a toaster oven.
But what makes it even worse is that they don't USE any of the technology they find; they're just hoarding it. They have tons of technology that can improve everyone's lives, including their own, but they won't touch any of it because it's for "when we rebuild society". There's a subplot in one of the games where a Brotherhood outpost is dying out, all their knowledge will be lost...but even though they have the technology to save themselves they won't use it because that's not how they think.

Maximus is the player who tries to do good but feel power trip rushes everytimes he finds a new weapon XD

You guys mentioned in the previous episode reaction being curious as to how much in game stuff was being referenced in the show... honestly, pretty much every scene is packed full of stuff straight out of the games, from the little details like Nuka Cola bottles etc. through to the major themes on how the world works. It's amazing to me that they managed to make that happen, and still make the entire world feel congiguous and natural even to people who have never played the games!
Just a couple of specific gaming examples - Lucy greeting the wasteland dude wearing underpants while pointing a gun in his face references how when you are gaming, you usually by default (and certainly in Fallout games) still have your gun equipped and raised, so you are litterally pointing a gun in the face of NPCs when you talk to them.
Maximus carrying that huge and heavy bag while squiring for Titus - well, Maximus is the NPC henchmen at this point, and so Titus (the player character) dumps all of his heavy inventory juink onto him to carry 🙂

The thumbs up thing from the last episode, you're right that it could have gone really badly. But it was extremely well-written, it was shot in an interesting way where we don't see the first bomb fall, and that adorable little actress playing the Ghoul's daughter acted that moment beautifully. She's not in the series very much , and scene is probably her stand out in this season.. It needed to be good, and she was good, and the director got that good performance out of her.

Max haters think they can just use a 10mm gun(a starter weapon in the games mind you) to shoot a giant irradiated bear in a dark, confined space of a cave and somehow come out on top. Had that happened, the would have cornered Max and that cowardly knight would have taken that opportunity and left his expendable squire as a sacrifice and tried to get away. Instead he got a headshot off outside, in broad daylight, while the bear was vulnerable. It's just logic.
Also, that jerk of a knight already told Max what he was gonna have done to him had he saved him. What a dummy, what do people expect max to do? Save the knight and then immediately get his butt merced by the knight or sent to camp and get executed? Haha seriously though, that was his only choice. Again it's just logical, logic which seems to escape the haters. Love the reaction once again!

Around 11:40 when they talk the whole camera angle and jumping is a nod to the games. Dialogue between you and npc is kinda like that and sometimes depending on if any obstacles in that dialogue scene the cam may angle differently.
Another nod is the shoot out when the bullets slo mo, nod to an ability called VATS (Vault tec, Assisted, Targeting System) where in game scene pause/slow down, you target a specific location on body, tells you % to hit, and fire. If crit the cam focus bullet as it flies to its target.

I love how the different characters are like different level/experience players. Lucy, level 1 new player. Maximus, level ~20ish played maybe 20-30 hours. The Ghoul, Level 200 and has a ~1000 hours easy.
Also fun note, there is the big joke in skyrim (another bethesda game) about the character eating 50 wheels of cheese in the middle of a fight to heal and what the bandits must think of this crazy person on the verge of death eating that many cheese wheels and all of a sudden being completely healthy. So him eating tomatoes is a joke on eating food for healing in the middle of battle and also really captures that feeling of being super high level and having a bunch of level 5 raiders try to kill you. And the way they work in those real game perks and feeling without it ever feeling like a blatent game moment. The ghoul clearly has the "Bloody Mess" perk maxed out and that will make enemies have a chance to explode in gore and at max rank can make nearby enemies also explode into gore. So those two guys getting killed by the same bullet makes sence from a game perspective but just looked awesome from a movie/show perspective. It wasn't out of place at all.

Great reaction like always love the "Please Remain Calm" because these standard turrets can't hit shit, even if a target stands still. It's a meme from the games. The name of the Bear thing is a "Yao Gui" A lot of the songs you are hearing, are actual songs that play in the game. It's a real treat for us that adore the game. Writing as an older viewer who has played all the games (bar that PS2 game, sheesh) since the Interplay days? I think they’ve nailed not only the current aesthetic of the latter Bethesda days, but also brought the darker aspects of the Fallout 1/2 stories to the screen. I honestly expected this show to be terrible, and was so incredibly surprised by the quality of the sets, acting and writing. Good writing from American media has seemingly become a lost art. Am glad a show like this has proven that attitude of mine wrong.

Rad Roach: Very common evrywhere in the Wastelands, these mutated cockroaches are easily dispatched but can be dangerous in larger groups and to unaware prey.
Bloat Fly: Another mutated oversized insect. This time of the flying variety, it is capable of shooting projectiles from its apendix. By far the greatest nuisance in the Wasteland.
Brahmin: The most benevolent and beneficial mutated creature to man in the wasteland.
Docile strong and edible (baring the cycsts) these two headed beasts of burden are really not much different from the cows they used to be
Yao Guai: Once a bear, now a badass bear. Always in a foul mood. Best not to disturb it. Dealing with them when you are in power armor isn't much of an issue (normaly).
Gulper: Weird, larger than man, amphibious Creatures possibly evolved from Salamanders. Not much is known about these.

The skeletons in the home is a perfect example of the story-telling that happens in Bethesda games. Scenes like this are EVERYWHERE in Fallout, to the point to where it's coined the name Environmental Storytelling Skeletons. Personally, this is why I love the world of Fallout. There's a visible layer of extinct history underneath everything you experience, from the environment to scenes like this. Just yesterday did a mission where I went out to find a recording at a picnic site and the scene laid out, along with the recording, showed a scene of one woman drowning another woman and then taking rat poison. You're hearing what happened on this old tape but its clear it happened so long ago, that after that recording their bodies just laid out there for years and years with no one coming to help, you're constantly faced with interactions like this. Sometime quite uncomfortable, some funny. It builds an amazingly rich world where the protagonists and antagonists HAVE to take a backseat to the star of the show, the world.
And the mutated bear, accurate to how they look in the game, are called Yao Guai. They are pretty tough to fight but are fairly easy later in game when you have power armor, which makes the dude that more of a bitch.

The Ghoul mentioned in the first episode that he was in the Marines. Power armor is a device from the Pre-War, which means he mostly wore one and knows everything there is about them. A lot of the rounds the Ghoul used in the gun fight are explosive rounds which is why they were so devastating against the people. You'll know about who the Ghoul was/is as episodes go by. Us Fallout gamers know who and what the factions are about like The Brotherhood of Steel and Vault-tec. So we already know a bit more on what is really going on. You'll find out to.
