Cats really really really do NOT kill rats! They will chase and grab MICE or maybe baby rats at most. Rats will bite the cat and the cats actually do not like rats. PLEASE, don't bother with cats for your rat problem. Minks, Ferrets, and snakes that are naturally around the barns are the better catchers. Otherwise, get the fancy lights that flicker when there is motion that look like an animal eyes when they light up. Not expensive, run on solar energy! Work all night long and needs no care or food.
Cats love to be perched up high so I think having Kevin build some perches in the acclimation cage would make the cats transition smoother. Also maybe a perched lookout house somewhere in the milking area or somewhere close so they could have somewhere warm higher up to sleep. Our barn cats always slept in the loft of the barn and seemed to love it! :)
Definitely should do that. That's how I keep my kitties out of the kitchen when I'm cooking. As long as they have a spot they can overlook if they choose to they're very happy. It's also important because cats are both predator & prey. They like safe places & high up is good.
As someone else mentioned, you'll want to put the food on a plate for them to avoid the sharp edges from the can and whisker fatigue. Two plates would be better, one for each. Daily cleaning of the litter box is a must.
Thank you for saying this. I sorta thought the same thing about the cat food. Put the food in a flat low bowl, my cats like this kind. And yes clean their cat box every day. Both cats are very pretty. They are scared and they always half to get used to things. Good luck.
Also, perhaps 2 litter boxes as they generally prefer there own box. Once they become part of the general population they will probs return to the cage to sleep through the day as it will become their safety zone. Consider putting a roof on it that will give them shade and protect them from rain. Build them some ramps and high up perching spots so they can watch without feeling cornered.
@@mrspickle8285agreed. The general rule for litter is 1 box per cat plus 1, so 2 cats should ideally have 3. Also cats prefer to be up high where they can watch and hate their whiskers touching things (not to mention those cans can be sharp!) I have short, wide whisker friendly stainless bowls for my trio's wet food
The new cats are so pretty. I would definitely put the cat food on a plate for them. The edges can be sharp on those cans. I would also scoop the litter box. Digging all around poop can't be desirable for them. The cottage looks amazing. I can't wait to see the finished product! ❤
4:02 as a fur mama to 11 cats, I can say that yes, they all act like that. They expect 100% love and attention on their terms. They also expect you’ll leave them alone and don’t even look in their direction, also on their terms. And we’re expected to know which moment calls for which response.
For the indoor cat I suggest making areas for her to climb up and lounge on. Cats like to be up high hence the climbing on counters ect it in their nature. Kevin's Krafts Time!
I recommend “museum wax” to temporarily glue down decorations. It is used in California to earthquake proof items to keep them on display shelves. I have proved that it keeps items safe from my cats.
Yes, I thought the same, with some high sitting places will they aclimate faster and better, as they can see their surrounding better and feel safe high up
Barn cats 100% fixed my rat problem within a month of them being let out of their acclimation cage. Good luck! You will love them. My current barn cat is the hardest working animal here. In mid-winter here in Maine, when I go out in the morning after a storm, I ALWAYS see his footprints all around the coops first thing in the AM. When I put food out for him, he waits and follows me to put the birds up before eating. DEDICATED to his job. :)
Thank you for bringing attention for this wonderful program!!!! Nearly every animal control/shelter has these programs and they are incredibly important!!! ❤
That can of food should be put in food dish. Just like with people, cats enjoy a good presentation and care that the presenter is willing to give them.
Oh sweet lady. I've been watching your channel for years, I too have chronic illness (3 autoimmune diseases). It hurts my heart to hear you're struggling but you're doing great with a positive attitude about the whole thing so I know you'll be just fine. Don't be hard on yourself that is the hard part!
The aclimation cage is actually really smart! That's one rule I always had when I had an indoor-outdoor cat, keep them inside for a few weeks, then supervised outside time, so they know where home is. 🏠🐈 I'd also recommend building them a little house, so they have a safe place that's just theirs. That made a big difference with my grandparent's outside cats.
I'm sure others have said - but cat food cans can cut the cats - just put on a plate or something else. My cats LOVE fancy feast - they would agree that that is a very high end treat!!! I just love your two new little ones. I'm so happy you adopted them!!!! So much work getting done in the cabin - very impressive! Great job Kevin and everyone - so much work - so much to look forward too in the years to come! xo
Cats are a pet that everything is on their terms. They are the center of their universe. And they really don't care about pleasing humans. They're nothing like dogs!
Love that you’re helping these rescue cats! My local humane society has a similar “barn cat” program and it’s a great alternative for cats who don’t want to be friends!
I have just like her & yeah they're all attitude. But also very sweet. Just uh don't try to take her mouse. Her brother tried to share & she turned into a demon cat at 6am scaring the crap out of me. Ironically they're both indoor only since birth & they were raised around pet rats. Doesn't stop her though. Her brother is also my teddy bear cat but likes me to catch him moving kitty treats I'd bugs.
Thank you for giving them a home. If you put the food on something else it would be great, Cats tend to be competitive eating and those sharp cans can cut their tongues up. ( I have about 50 ferals) or the a/c if you are comfortable with electric, flip the breaker remove the plug in from its box twist it and put it back in. Then the cord will be going towards the unit and make it where you have less to disguise. Hope you have better luck with yours than we did with ours, ours lasted one heat cycle and one cooling cycle and quit.
Fancy feast has sharp edges on the cans. Most cats that eat hard food for their main diet are happy with a half can of Fancy Feast a piece. Most cats also prefer pate over shreds. Good luck with your new fur babies. I'm a cat parent of 7.
Congratulations Reba!! Yes kittys come into the house, take over and allow you to live there with them. That's the problem with trapping mice and rats. You catch the dumb ones and the smart ones learn how to stay free. Don't push yourself too far. Your health is the most important thing. With your couch, it only matters if you guys like it. Just stay healthy ❤
Congrats on Reba!! I had a feeling it would take. Now crossing fingers that it sticks! For the new kitties, put in some high shelves or platforms, one with a hidey place. 😄
Yep, time for Kevin's crafts. As others have commented, your cats will feel more secure when they have high perches. Also, they appreciate a cleaned out litter box.
Yes!! That’s the way cats are!! I have a bottle fed barn kitty that comes in the house for a little spoiling and she loves to go wherever she wants much to my hubbys consternation!!
You described a normal cat perfectly. They own every spot. They only love you when they wanna. They love to knock things off the counter or couch or… you name it. I love how entertaining cats are!
Yup, that's how cats are. They think they can go everywhere and do what they want to do! She's a little beauty though! She'll grow out of the biting stage though, as long as you give her lots of love so that she wants to get more! A couple suggestions for your new outdoor cats- provide them with some hay or blankets. A blanket or bed inside the little house and some hay outside. Maybe a cat tree or something to perch up on to hang out and look around once they feel safe to venture out of the little house. The cage is too bare and they will feel exposed and vulnerable just hanging out on the dirt ground. Last, the inside rim of the can might be a bit sharp. Best to put the food in a dish. And maybe when they are eventually ready to roam, you might want to consider pet collars with tracking devices so you can monitor where they go in case they leave your property.
Now you are like a big farm. You have "Barn Cats"! And working Dogs. Herds of goats. All types of poultry. And rats to get rid of 😄. Can't think of anything more. The Cabin is looking great. Heating and cooling too. And that kitchen is Sweet 👍🏻. I don't know what problems others have had with the couch looks comfortable to me. Great work Guys.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Noodle and Doodle are cute! My workplace dairy has a barncat who has never been indoors, she just appeared in the feed storage building one early winter as a kitten. She likes pets - but just a few before it's too much and she gets scared and wants to bite/swipe. She lets familiar "feeding people" pick her up for a short time. She has always had the feed storage as her "food place" and often shows up when the cow feeding equipment starts its loud humming - that means there is definitely people there to give her food😸 She has once brought a hawk to show off🤯 Catches flying barn swallows, sparrows, of course mice... She spends most of the winter in the feed storage and in the summer only comes around a couple times a week. She loves to sleep on top of a round bale that is on its side, I think it's softer than one that is upright. Hay or straw doesn't matter, if it's in that specific place (getting fed to the cows) it's her bed😻 Her 3 children are much friendlier indoor-outdoor cats; male doesn't come anywhere near the barn and prefers mousing in the fields, older female likes the barn office (and bullies her mom in the feed storage) and mostly lazes around drinking milk, last female ("the pill" failed and there was a litter that mom kept very very hidden so they were a potential seed of feral cat population, when finally found other littermates were put down but this one needed extra searching - too much time to think so putting down became impossible) loves catching mice in the barn. Now mom is spayed, as are all her children.
What a really cool program for cats! I hope they acclimate well and help you in your battle with rats. Your cottage is looking so great! You're almost there.
DeNelle,I'm so happy that Reba is pregnant, looks like 4? The cats are cute I hope the feel more homey soon and start catching rats. The cabin is looking great, the bathroom and kitchen are so cute. Have a nice weekend and blessings from Michigan ❤
That indoor kitty is SOOO cute. But yes that naughty juvenile phases makes you wanna pull your hair out. As long as she's not wetting anywhere you can consider it a success, lol
Fun idea! You could decorate the one side of the fridge that’s facing the door opening so whenever you come in, you have a super cute fridge wall to look at, with whatever you want to do! It could be a super warm and welcoming, instead of boring or annoying, part of the cottage! 💛
Someone commented about perches for the cat...use Kevin's creative crafts to create a perch. Just a piece of flat wood covered in carpet that would be easy to take down and vacuum easily.
my 5-year-old is pretty mouthy she gives nibbles noms and licks and this morning she decided to give me a little pinch right next to the fat part of my arm by my elbow usually her nibbles don't hurt but she gave me a good one
1 adopted 3 barn cats. 1 escaped the enclosure the first night and I never saw her again. After the confinement period 1 cat attached himself to my dog (brittany spaniel) and would follow her around all day. i have had them 6 years and moved once and brought them with me. I love having them around. one comes in the house daily for a few minutes to say Hi. i do find a dead rat or mouse occasionally. Sadly, one will get baby birds sometimes. They cry at the door in the morning to be feed. They have access to a shed with heated cat beds in the winter even though our winters are not as bad in the Dallas area.
My weekend was spent at my mom's where my cat and sister's cat are bonded. My sister's cat slept on my head. my cat wedged herself under my pillow on me. cats are their own rulers My sister's cat was taught no boundaries and mine just is nocturnal and wants her mama cuddles but they also do everything you've mentioned. Also, my dog is just like yours with cats.
Yep she is a typical kitten LOL Re knocking things down do you have Blue Tac over there? I always tell me new kitten mommas about it. I use it to stick ornaments to shelves and pot plants to the saucer and the saucer to the windowcill LOL Its an absolute essential possibly for life if she continues to do as we call them "gravity experiments" ie patting things off tables and shelves and watch them whilst they fall Just like kids have terrible twos, kitties seem to have them too, 6 months to a year they are at their worst. You can train them though, get a plant sprayer. WHen doing something you dont want to do like getting on the kitchen counter or scratching a sofa say "NO" if they continue, shake the sprayer, if they continue spray, aim for the face! Eventually you wont have to spray, shaking is enough, and eventually the NO will be enough. My cats do not get on the kitchen counters at all, one however does scratch the sofa annoyingly he wont be trained but he joined us as an adult rescue and we missed the crucial teenage stage with him. Good luck
Sending love and can’t wait for the updates on the new worker cats. Using a bowl, making high perches for them. I wish I had a Kevin-my whole condo would be for my cats. 😂❤
Can’t wait to see the outcome of the working cats. We have a similar problem with mice, moles and rats too (and we don’t have any grain around!) I have been trying to convince hubby that it’s barn cats we need for years! Good luck, I hope it works out.
We had outdoor cats on our farm. They slept in the garage at night and were very people friendly. The down side is that predetors can get them. Light colored cats stand out more and get picked off easier. We lived next to a national forest with lots of bears, mountain lions, coyotes, etc.
Cats are naturally independent and very curious. best solution is give her her own room, with toys and scratching posts and all kinds of things to keep her busy and she will stay out of your space. to encourage her to WANT to be with you , TREATS will almost always work, as with dogs , cats too can be trained to do certain things.
They absolutely need shelves and different levels in the outdoor cat cage! That will give them so much more living area inside that tall cage. Please make use of all the vertical height to make your working cats more comfortable
I've always thought cats aren't pets, they are co-habitors. Like us, they all have individual personalities, they have things they really enjoy and things they hate. One cat might love to be held and petted, another will only accept being petted if you don't try to pick them up. Cats tend to be bitey when they are overstimulated. If they do that, just respect their personal boundaries and they will be friendly again.
I’m so excited. I just received my Luna and Willow plushies. They are fantastic, so very soft that I haven’t put them down yet. They will be watching Friday’s video with me. Love them!
I feed my cat that cat food, but he doesn't eat it out of the can. We have a plate for him to eat off. Those cans have sharp edges. When I first brought him here he wasn't happy, either. A couple of months and happiness will start to arrive. I look forward to seeing some rat success with them.
To answer the question about cats having a superiority complex: yes. Every. Single. One of them. I've "owned" cats for years and they all have their own thing that they do: counter sitting, shelf dwelling, ordering their food like they pay rent. It's always something.
Love the cottage… put the big microwave on top of the fridge plenty of room! Looks so great!❤😊 omg😮absolutely love love love the bathroom sink it’s so beautiful definitely my style love it!💓
Totally normal cat behavior! She's absolutely adorable. Excited for the new rat hunters. If you really want a cabinet above the fridge and it's not too much trouble, you could take the one from above the range, then get a microwave/exhaust vent thing for above the stove instead. Just an idea.
Cats are very independent they do as they want they’ll come to you when they want to be pet and loved on if you go to them they’ll try to run away or they nip or scratch at you it’s they’re way of saying leave me alone i’ll come to you when i’m ready
I can confirm that cats go everywhere, do anything, and do whatever they like at all times. A LOT of cats do this. If your cat is dumping things over the edge of tables, its because she is bored and that then turns into the activity of the day. I would recommend considering finding things to do with her to entertain her to keep her out of mischief. Our cat is so obsessed with food that she will go after almost any human foods, but thankfully only around her feeding times will she try to eat from our dishes. We had her checked out by the vet... and the results came in that she just likes food and nothing is wrong with her. Could be something that her previous owners did that may have contributed to her food obsession and weird behaviors. She isn't possessive or mean with food or anything, just just loves food and wants it constantly is all. Makes for a cat that will be more easily trainable for tricks and teaching... just see things on the positive side over negative. We just feed her more smaller meals during the day and it feed a lot of issues we were having, and she is the most dog loving, people obsessed cat ever and for the most part she is good. Shes just a little bit of a door dasher who wants to be where she shouldn't be like closets, garages, and closed off rooms and refuse to meow to let you know shes locked in there..... I swear all cats love to do and be where and what they shouldn't be doing.
Another great video - love the cottage and the new kitties. I know you've had a lot of health issues but I was watching and thinking how lovely you look. Cant wait for bay goats in Jan and Feb
Take the cat food out of the can and break it apart so they will both be able to eat at the same time if they want to do things together while they are getting use to their new home.
When you put your tree up for Christmas you can do what I did. I would put the tree by a wall hammer a nail into the wall and use twine or yarn to tie the tree to the wall. I wrap the yarn around the center post then bring the ends to the nail. I don’t pound the nail all the way in, I wrap the ends around the bait a couple of times then tie in a knot. Now the kitty won’t knock the tree over.
I really love how every problem in a farm can be solved by simply adding more animals
AND insects. You should look into beneficial insects
😂 isn't that true
Haha ikr
It's called farm math 😂

The saying goes “ dogs have owners , cats have staff “ and it’s so true !!!
Oh how too true that is! I have 5 cats and many times I feel I am a slave to them lol!
My dog definitely has a servant (me). Her nickname is the Duchess.

3:43 yes, that is how cats are- especially kittens!! the biting is usually play nips, unless she's overstimulated, then its a "hey stop"

my 5-year-old is pretty mouthy she gives nibbles noms and licks and this morning she decided to give me a little pinch right next to the fat part of my arm by my elbow
usually her nibbles don't hurt but she gave me a good one
That's normal for a cat to do whatever they want lol
Yep she is a typical kitten LOL Re knocking things down do you have Blue Tac over there? I always tell me new kitten mommas about it. I use it to stick ornaments to shelves and pot plants to the saucer and the saucer to the windowcill LOL Its an absolute essential possibly for life if she continues to do as we call them "gravity experiments" ie patting things off tables and shelves and watch them whilst they fall
Just like kids have terrible twos, kitties seem to have them too, 6 months to a year they are at their worst.
Most cats are like that. You only get to pet and touch them when they feel like it. 😊
The answer to your cat question is a big fat YES!
Yes, cats think they can do whatever they want.❤❤❤
Can’t wait to see the outcome of the working cats. We have a similar problem with mice, moles and rats too (and we don’t have any grain around!) I have been trying to convince hubby that it’s barn cats we need for years! Good luck, I hope it works out.
Ha ha! I had a rooster named Doodle 😊
For a high value cat treats you might want to get some “Temptations.”
sounds like a really normal calico ( read female) cat....she is a sweetie
As far as Kitty, yes, that is all normal cat things, ESPECIALLY Calico cats! lol
It’s been awhile since I been here and it’s good to see Luna still with us 😊😊😊
That definitely sounds like my cats. Three little gremlins in cat from inhabit my garage. 😂
I have two cats. I’ve had to child proof my house. They open doors and cabinets!
This cat is a beauty queen
Congratulations for Reba !!! Yay for Noodle and Doodle. Love how the cabin project is advancing ❤
"Sometimes, she wants pets but other times, she just wants to bite us."
Welcome to cat ownership!
They absolutely need shelves and different levels in the outdoor cat cage! That will give them so much more living area inside that tall cage. Please make use of all the vertical height to make your working cats more comfortable
Good job! ❤👍🏻👋🏻 Love your family and farm! Thank you for sharing! ❤️
My granddaughter has 2 cats and they are Noodle and Doodle
Absolutely! (about cats) it's a cats world, and we are allowed or tolerated to live in it. Lol
Love them!
The cabin is looking great. Feeling like a cozy cabin
I feed my cat that cat food, but he doesn't eat it out of the can. We have a plate for him to eat off. Those cans have sharp edges. When I first brought him here he wasn't happy, either. A couple of months and happiness will start to arrive. I look forward to seeing some rat success with them.
I have 5 barn cats right now. They are such good hunters
I'm happy to see Twila went into heat and got bred. She's my favorite goat 🐐 I was getting worried. ❤❤❤
To answer the question about cats having a superiority complex: yes. Every. Single. One of them. I've "owned" cats for years and they all have their own thing that they do: counter sitting, shelf dwelling, ordering their food like they pay rent. It's always something.
I see three or four follicles. The cabin is amazing
I loved this video! Packed with information and adventure, just how I like them. And I got to see my Luna! ❤️🐐
I love all of the different things going on in this video!!
Haha! I totally caught the Dumb and Dumber reference 😂😂
My cats love their tree branch in their enclosure to climb and claw - I’m sure they will love it too!
Good luck with the new cats. Hopefully they are good hunters and they will stay around
I missed seeing you!! Happy to see your faces!! ❤
Juno very much acts like a proper Calico. Love on her terms, does what she wants. My Aphrodite is the same haha
Another great video - love the cottage and the new kitties. I know you've had a lot of health issues but I was watching and thinking how lovely you look. Cant wait for bay goats in Jan and Feb
You go Reba you are phenomenal 🎉🎉thank heaps from Ronnie ❤️ 💙 from Geelong Vic Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️
Cats were once worshipped as gods in ancient Egypt. All cats remember this 😂
I have two cats and they go wherever they want. We don’t own them they own us. That’s the way cats are.
How about a bowl / tray for the canned cat food, the edges of the cans are sharp..love your videos
That's just the way cats are. They think everything and everybody belongs to them. They can do whatever they want
Your kitten is so darn cute I love the coloring.
I'm glad you are able to rescue a pair of ferral cats.❤❤❤
