  • One of the most important features of the Passport models is that they are light enough to transport them on top of your vehicle. Refer to your vehicle rack limits and only use J-racks capable of securing the 65 LB Passport 10.5 or the 75 LB Passport 12.0 Video concludes with storage options.

Im 5'7 165 and id say im athletic and strong and the passport 12 is difficult to get over head. I place a strap across my t bars put the nose on the strap and push from the back. Wish it was a bit easier...

I'm 5'11 205 and 54. I would not describe myself as overly athletic and I have an office job. I agree it is a challenge to get the 12.0 up from the ground to over your head and onto your shoulders. There is a bit of a trick to lifting the kayak up from your waist (using your leg muscles to assist in the motion), and then ducking under the kayak to let it rest and balance primarily on the back of your shoulders. Once it is there, I'm good to walk it around a short distance. It always takes my full focus. Thanks for posting your comment - because, yes, flipping something this heavy and big is not for everyone. But, if you can do it, this kayak can be a great option. And if you cannot, there are other options, as you have kindly shared. Thanks!

Is it safe and/or recommended by Hobie to run the straps through the Scuppers and the drive slot?

Great question! Through the scuppers, yes (through the drive slot, I'm not sure). The drive slot is where I always sling the front strap through, and I'm careful not to snag on the clips that hold the Mirage drive in place. You also want to be sure of that the rack on your vehicle is rated to hold your kayak. Also, the J-bar hooks you buy to hold your kayak need to be adequately rated as well. I had to look around to find a pair that would hold a 75 LB (Passport 12.0) kayak. There are a lot of options, but it is wise to find something that will protect your investment. 😎
