Great video. I just picked up two demo 2021 Passport 12’s from a dealer and just completed all of these modifications to both of them. About the only thing different I did was use a cordless jigsaw. All necessary cuts were easy to make. I went slow , being very careful not to make mistakes. I was done with all hatches for both boats in under 4 hours. Some people might be able to do it faster. I like the end result. Your video made my task easier. Thsnks
Thank you ..I did this today thanks to watching this video many times I had the confidence to do this to my brand new passport 12...I'm not a handy man at all but thanks to your videos I've upgraded the hatch, added an anchor trolley, drive leach and side pockets ...soon I'll get the H bar and sidekicks ...I'm loving upgrading as much as the fishing ..
I will be doing this upgrade to mine when it arrives thank you and I like the fact people like me with not loads of money can upgrade things in time if it was all on the boat the boat would cost alot more
The factory round hatch removal and what you can see once its gone says a great deal about the build quality. It's the same old story: cost doesn't necessarily equate to quality.
Yeah, I was kind of disappointed when I saw that. Just "fishing" for my first kayak. Plus I wish that was how it came from the factory - rectangular + dual round hatches, instead of me having to cut my brand new "boat"...
Hatches cost money and parts and labor would be passed down to you. Almost any shop can perform this service for you at time of purchase, so what you’re asking is already an option.
Now you know a little to why their other kayaks co$t more. They have those pre-installed of course. It is pretty crazy to pay $130 bucks for a few pieces of plastic. 🤷🏻
great way to make your yak flood. anyone used silicone as well as gasket? my mates yak took on heaps of water after hatch install also noticed two existing holes from the round hatch which weren't filled.
I too was looking for them to use silicone sealer, surprised he didn't. The factory install for the round hatch apart from being a messy cut, also was without silicone. Just a question, if the factory did not seal it with silicone, and presuming they don't want the expense and bad reputation of thousands of kayaks being recalled because of taking on water, could your friend have slightly messed up the install of his hatch? I still would use silicone regardless though.
There is no room to spare on the 12 once it's installed so unless that area of the 10.5 is identical i don't think it could .. but that's just a guess after fitting mine
Ill add this...I tried with a rotary tool (dremmel 4000 with a 535 or whatever kit) and I quit. The jigsaw with a fine tooth blade was much quicker, cleaner, and just better.
wondering what you used to cut that hole at the 1:49 mark lol im thinking a dremel or some kind of multi tool. this is good to see because people will realize the circle doesnt need to be absolutely perfect and some small errors will be just fine.
Yes the wide flange and large surface of the gasket is fairly forgiving! In our factory we use a jig and a large roto-zip tool that cuts fast but in the same style as a dremel does.
I'd say a small router would be a good method to cut a clean neat hole for the home DIY too. Hey, question, why doesn't the factory use any silicone to be extra sure the hatch is water tight? Also, where do you put the fish caught, I was thinking there might be a hatch space, but couldn't see one. You wouldn't want a fish on the deck flapping around and getting away.
After doing this, I see there is what I can assume is my serial number where the plastic needs to be removed and the passport in the video has more holes for an 8" hatch than I do on mine
Your primary serial number is located at the back of your hull, the number under the old hatch is a backup. Yes we did switch from an older 8" round hatch that had eight mounting screws to a better design that is stronger and using only 6 screws!
Why Not design the boat with standard & fully equipments options for customers to select instead of dealing with all of the modification. Just charge more for the fully equipped accessories.
This is an entry level kayak, with less standard bells and whistles as standard. We are able to pass the cost savings onto the consumer. As with all Hobie kayaks, there's the option for upgrades and customization. Some of the other kayaks in our line fall into a premium price point category and are outfitted from the factory with more standard options at a higher price point.
Yes you can. You may have to use an aftermarket transducer mount, depending on the model and where the transom mount adapter on the transducer sits. Best to contact your local Hobie dealer to assist you in selecting a fish finder unit.
In other words, the passport was designed poorly because it's got virtually no storage compared to much cheaper Chinese made Kayaks. BTW, where do I fit my sounder transducer in the Passport? ;)
The Passport 12.0 comes equipped with an 8" round hatch in the center of the cockpit, plus a bow recess with bungee and a generous cargo deck with bungee. This is plenty of storage for most, but for those looking to add more, Hobie has given our customers options. We knew this model would be a popular fishing platform for those looking for a quality fishing kayak at a reasonable price, which is why this model is factory equipped with a transducer cavity and mounting plate. Aftermarket transducer mounting plates that suit Lowrance side imaging transducers like the TotalScan, ActiveImaging 3-in-1 and TripleShot are available. Contact your local Hobie dealer for more information: www.hobie.com/dealers
Now you know why the other Hobie ‘yaks co$t more. They already have these options pre-installed. There are other ways to upgrade, just have to use your knowledge of course.

I agree with you, sure, it can be done faster than the 4 hours, but it's best to take your time and ensure it is 100% neat and correct.

you should post some videos on your page of your boat! i am looking into a passport 12 also and will be my first yak
Thank you for your guide to installation . I will be doing the same thing . Will be great to have all three hull points for storage and battery .
I will be doing this upgrade to mine when it arrives thank you and I like the fact people like me with not loads of money can upgrade things in time if it was all on the boat the boat would cost alot more

Why cant hobie pre install it. And make it available in the market which saves the consumer the hazzle
Agree with you 100% imo it is just to make more money
Hatches cost money and parts and labor would be passed down to you. Almost any shop can perform this service for you at time of purchase, so what you’re asking is already an option.

Great video! Is there room to do this square hatch install on the Hobie Passport 10.5'?
wanted to know the same thing
There is no room to spare on the 12 once it's installed so unless that area of the 10.5 is identical i don't think it could .. but that's just a guess after fitting mine
Yeah it works I did it to mine... big difference
Ill add this...I tried with a rotary tool (dremmel 4000 with a 535 or whatever kit) and I quit. The jigsaw with a fine tooth blade was much quicker, cleaner, and just better.
What is a 90 degree straight edge? 😄great install video.

What are the overall inside opening and outside flange dimensions (L x W) for this vertical hatch??
After doing this, I see there is what I can assume is my serial number where the plastic needs to be removed and the passport in the video has more holes for an 8" hatch than I do on mine
Your primary serial number is located at the back of your hull, the number under the old hatch is a backup. Yes we did switch from an older 8" round hatch that had eight mounting screws to a better design that is stronger and using only 6 screws!
So what Im seeing is Hobie saying "this should be done this way from the factory" for both the bungees and hatches.
Does installing the square hatch in place of the circular one void the warranty?
Our hatch when mounted correctly like this does not void your warranty!

will this fit a passport 10.5?
Yes
Can I put a Garmin striker 4 for my fish finder?
Yes you can. You may have to use an aftermarket transducer mount, depending on the model and where the transom mount adapter on the transducer sits. Best to contact your local Hobie dealer to assist you in selecting a fish finder unit.
@@HobieOfficial thank you
Does this hatch fit the 2020 12ft Compass?
Yep, it sure will.
The storage was fixed centrally. I’d be unhappy if that was my yak
Yeah that drove me mad while watching lol...
👏👏👏❤️
Square hatch is crooked as all get out. Hope you didn’t sell that to someone.

"We made it really easy" to charge you 200 bucks for a 20 dollar hatch made in china.
