"Jimmy's daughter" was the best rofl.
The conversation with Laura was fantastic. Thanks for sharing Jimmy!
I got chills watching you & Laura talk. It all hit so close to home with me as well. I always said I wanted to be an artist growing up & all I got I return were negative responses. All I can say is "Look at me now". I'm happy & I love every piece of art I make. You two make my heart so happy. I love this maker community so much. I wish the whole world could be as kind. Xoxo
Tiffany Johnson awesome xo
jimmydiresta I added a little more to my comment. Lol. I could go on & on. My wish & dream is to meet you some day. Will you ever be coming to Detroit Michigan or near?
stealing equipment late at night is a common problem - one suggestion is to talk with people that may have had video cameras on the routes away from your shop - maybe ask the police for some assistance if they haven't already done this - its worked a couple of times in catching thieves in my area
I had a trailer stolen once. I got it back a few days later but ever since then I have retrofitted all my trailers with a receiver tube on the tongue. I now have a 2 inch and 2 5/16 Coupler that I can attach and remove via the receiver tube. I also got a friend to help build a circuit that pulses the brakes on the trailer and flashes all the lights(when plugged in) via a battery and solar maintainer Whenever I engage a Hidden keyed switch. Now if somebody wants to steal my trailer they are going to have to drag it by a chain without the tires turning
So you can remotely engage the brakes effectively? Keep in mind that you might endanger innocent bystanders if this goes off in the wrong place .. Maybe just blaring the horn in addition to blinking the lights is a better idea?
Kyshu i believe he means that when one doesn't flip the switch it starts to do this, so it would be very difficult to even get going with the trailer
That’s exactly what I meant. If they can even hook to it in the first place since I’ve made my Coupler Removable. I turn on the switch when I unhook from the trailer and that engages the brakes pulsating 30 seconds on 5seconds off In flipping that keyed switch that also makes it if they are just somehow hook up lights to the trailer they won’t function properly they will just blink SOS and stolen. I also put a female plug for the trailer wiring on the trailer rather than a wire hanging off. I just use a double mail jumper to connect trailer to the truck. I live in a pretty rural area and trailers that really isn’t a problem but I got that one stolen and got a little carried away
I live in Texas. Where public safety during the commission of a felony is the problem of the criminal not my problem.
Sounds like an idea you can sell
Jimmy, after watching your for years I really want to thank you (randomly now, in the comments of this video). You were probably the first on RUclips to inspire me (I used to make things but I never filmed them. Nowadays - kind of funny - shooting videos for other people is one of my jobs). Thanks to you I discovered David Waelder and I met him here in Italy where I Iive, thanks to him I met Giaco (what a guy!) and probably thanks to all of you I started following Laura (and today listening to your car chat I'm realising even more what a nice person she is) and many other makers in the meanwhile. I really believe in the future of your awesome community and I'm looking forward to be part of it some day soon. Take care! Gabriele
you and Laura are two of my favorite people on youtube and makers in general and seeing you both together and talking about making is so inspiring, special, and validating in terms of my own making and creative expression. much love to both of you
I really liked the conversation with Laura. It’s great and inspiring to know people’s story!!
I hope you plan on installing cameras. If they're watching your shop, they're not done five-finger shopping.
Brian Igielski He could also hide his DIRIESTA mark on every piece of metal and wood on the new trailer! That would make it hard to sell.
I have been following Laura forever. She's an awesome inspiration for girls to be able to do whatever they can dream, and not just be a Princess or Ballerina.
Sorry about the trailer.
Jimmy idea for you. My uncle made one of these for a friend so his trailer couldn't be stolen. Take a piece of bed frame and cut it 4" longer than your trailer wheels. Put a "T" on one end 6" long on the other end cut a steel plate so it will slide over the bed frame materiel. Make this piece 6" as well. Slide it through the wheels of the trailer and put a lock on the end with the plate that slides. They cant get at the bar to cut it and you can use a high security lock on it like they use on storage lockers you rent. They cant pull away with it either. Its locked in place.
My utility trailer was stolen, filed a police report, and figured I'd just buy another one later. Next week I got a call from the Sheriff's Office and they thought they may have recovered my trailer. I described it again and they said come take a look - it should be yours. I did and it was! The BEST part is they CLEANED IT UP!! Degreased the wheels, shined the tires, and pressure washed the frame and wood decking!
Dood !
Your conversation with Laura may be the best thing in the Makerverse EVER !
William Lutes hahah love lutes
That moment on the road where your driving but talking with both your hands is amazing. Italian Level: Over 9000
I learned to weld in a facility similar to this one back in 1988. They covered all types of welding from oxy/acet, AC stick, DC stick, MIG and TIG. The classes went for six weeks. A fantastic opportunity.
Great hanging with you again last week dude! Hope your trailer gets found soon, that SUCKS.
When I was listening to your conversation with Laura, an image of me as kid making stupid stuff with scrap popped in my brain. It reminded me that I was still that kid and how important making things defined me.
Thank you for this moment, you both are an inspiration
I LOVED the conversation with Laura in the truck. So good and funny. We don't get to see Jimmy be so casual. Nice to see.
I think that Laura was really on to something in her comments about the maker community and the way in which we can keep in touch around the world, sharing ideas, techniques, encouragement. This Genie will never be put back in the bottle.
The first thing Laura made was a “prison tattoo machine”? Somehow, that blows my mind.
sorry for the trailer Jimmy. Thank you both for the efficient talking...
Laura is so awesome, you're alright too Jimmy :)
Wood.Work.LIFE. Laura is awesome
Hey Jimmy, been watching this channel for years. As a junior high wood shop teacher up in Canada, I want to say thanks for what I've learned from you (a lot!). As a junior high woods teacher I also want to say, don't get burned out dude! Get healthy! If you didn't post for a few weeks, we'd understand... right guys???
"I'm Brett, i'm Jimmys daughter."
Made my day xD
Love the conversation with Laura. She’s great.
Thank you for answering the question about what Chippy was barking at too.
One day I have to visit Laura. She lives only 45 minutes away from my town. She is awesome. Love you guys. Keep doing these videos. Because of Jimmy I started making stuff in my backyard shed.
NOTHING WORSE THAN A THIEF! I'm pissed for you! At least you were insured. The music was really suspenseful, I thought I was watching a spy movie. Thanks for the video.
Sorry to hear that Jimmy. Hope you find the trailer!
OMG, that dental impression chair is High Art, maybe even better than your Left Footstool/Chair. Everyone should checkout that video. Repost, and also a detail of the Dental Chair build, please.
I really hope you get your trailer back soon. But it's great you got to have such a long visit with Laura! You both are such inspirations. I'm so glad I got to see you both in Cleveland!
I think what you silently expressed in this video, is never stop learning, whether from doing a job in the shop, or just having the opportunity to see someone else doing something, as in this case you mentioned Laura and how she setup to take video's. Also that you took the time to go to Lincoln welding to learn more about Tig welding. That really say's a lot about you, that you set a quality of perfection and when your honest with yourself, alone in the shop, and say: I need to do it BETTER. Thank's for sharing Jimmy, and being a big inspiration to a lot of people. Keep on making. As someone who can remember using movable type in 7th grade shop / printing class circa 1966, your idea / interpretation was great.
I am sooooo angry that someone stole from the Maker King. I'm happy to have met Jimmy in Cleveland. He is such a nice, down to Earth guy. He didn't even ice pick me when I almost spilled a whole beer on him 😀
AndTheCorrectAnswerIs hahhahah
I struggle with the creative artistic portion of how things work or how I think things should work. I’m fascinated with the why things work. I started this rabbit hole with watching Jimmy DiResta tips with David W. which put me on to Izzy, Bob C, David P, Laura, Giaco, and April, and many more. For us who know nothing, you all make it look easy and inspire greatness. Much love!
We are makers not haters. Keep up the great work @jimmydiresta and @laura_kampf so nice listening to your car chat! We are #Makers see you at #MakersCentral
I absolutely can't stand liars and thieves. Chin up Jimmy... others wickedness need only strengthen the goodness in you. You are a good man. God bless you
OK, Im not going to be able to sleep tonight because Laura's cup lid isnt tight at 10:35. Its going to leak!!!
Todd Coutu that was bothering me too.
I am going to show this episode to my 5 year old daughter. Great conversation with Laura, truly inspirational. This is what children, especially girls should be exposed to when they are young, not the mind mushing content that is in the mainstream. Thanks Jimmy and Laura!
Curious.... Why wasn't the trailer branded with great big [ DIRESTA ]'s ?
No kidding. I would put the name in areas they wouldn't think to look.
JDG Industries good question.
Excellent idea! Stencil like cutouts in the wood and metal parts would work well and look great.
I may not like everything all the makers I watch do (for me) but I do relish their process. I find inspiration in all that you guys do. Thank You!
Wow! It is really low to steal something that a person uses as part of how they make a living!
It happens a lot., I bet.
That conversation summed the community up totally. Even as an avid "maker viewer" it encourages me no end! Awesome guys!!
Jimmy, build a stationary bike with an alternator, and have the perp that stole your trailer, pedal the bike to drive your CNC router or even your welder.
Laura’s just the best! You two really compliment each other well. Love her photography and your style. The maker community rocks.
Gosh Jimmy, that was such an inspirational conversation you had with Laura. So many truths spoken so eloquently. My son also graduated as a photo journalism major but right after of when it may have been a profitable career. He uses the skills he has learned to survive and had until recently a position of management but the economy in this part of the country took a nose dive with the falling of oil prices. I'm very proud of all he has accomplished and I'm sharing this video with him because I believe you have said it so well. Follow you dreams, even if someone says something negative, they still thought about the subject matter.
Archeodigger o
I'm so glad that you guys had a good time in Cleveland, this city has come a long way and it's a great place to live nowadays. I didn't get a chance to make it to the meet up but it's worth it just to hear that it was fun for all the youtubers I watch.
sorry to hear about your trailer, hope you can recover it. Get well soon!
Really nice chat between you and Laura, thanks for sharing! She is right about having your small community to share ideas, concepts with. Also that you all seem to share different ideas of how to keep everyone fresh and gaining momentum with their pages and projects.
Jimmy, I just love your videos, how you put them together, how you and your creative friends have a blast, and you take us all along. I have learned a lot from you and your friends. Thank you!!! All!
protip; even if you put a "fake" decal on a trailer or piece of equipment that says "this trailer equipped with lojack GPS" or whatever, it'll usually deter a lot of thieves.
Laura is amazing maker, love things she does... S2
You have crazy skills as a maker. Your ability to converse with anybody and show genuine interest is probably your greatest attribute. Definitely a gift to you from the Lord.
Ted Alexander thank you 🙏🏼
Delightful, motivating & connecting, creating something like a blessed neural net of techniques, support & enthusiasm so that an individual, like me, finds the positive inspiration to transcend the dull, cold days & the relentless failings of tools that have to be fixed and the hard critical words of others, to do & make stuff that somehow lets part of my soul become manifest in our world. Thank you for all you do!
wow thank you
It was a pleasure meeting you in Cleveland!
Sorry that you had the flu! Glad you survived. A real bummer about your trailer. I hope the authorities apprehend the perpetrator. Love the video! Keep up the great work. :-)
There's so much drama in this soundtrack! It's sending shivers down my spine.
Hi there, Jimmy!
I love Laura! I knew her before I knew you. She got me to look at your channel. I loved to watch the interview!
I am my biggest critic after I finished something. No project is smooth and perfect. Every guitar I've built so far has some minor flaws. I need weeks and sometimes months to value my work after finishing it. They look great and play fine, but I can't looking at a small defect even if I am the only one who spots it. I love woodworking and tinkering and the focus is always the project, not how I get there. I can't change my mindset. But I am getting there.
I HOPE YOU CATCH THEM!
Thanks for sharing that Jimmy. I hated to hear about the theft. Loved listening to you and Laura talking about art and life. The world needs more art. All the best to both of you.
That was fun. The conversation was great. On another note, Remember how people used to comment that the daily news was so negative? Yet they kept watching. Looks to me that we don't have to watch negativity any longer. Thanks everyone!!!
Post Script. The building buying is going full steam ahead. I think I'm going to jump in with both feet. Stay tuned....& Thanks
love the dramatic build up with the Chippy... LMAO
I’m writing a comment but only if Laura is commenting too...
I am replying to your comment but only if Laura does too...
Idriss's Ideas did you watch the video? Lol
Sounds like a plan, Is somebody going to let her know about it?
hey bro-we missed you last week! btw, i might change my plans and go to maker faire bay area...thoughts?
Do it!!! :D
"...we gotta unionize." I totally want to see you design some Maker's Union stuff now.
I don't know what kind of madness these minds would come up with, but the youtube collab I'm still waiting to happen is DiResta and Michaelcthulhu.
I had a quad stolen out of my auto repair shop. I lived behind the shop, and when the alarm went off, I came right out, they were already gone. It must have been a few guys who picked it up and threw it into the back of a truck. I never got it back.
What an awesome interview with +Laura Kampf! So she said she made that thing when she was 26, that blew my mind because I thought thats how old she is now! Lol. Sorry you lost your trailer Jimmy :(
The reason for the DISLIKE on this video is how certain people in our society thinks that it’s okay to STEAL from others!!!
I hope you recover your Trailer.
I hope you get the trailer back buddy. Jealousy no good people. Take it easy and I hope you're doing ok and getting better.
Bryan Fuller was a cast member on Overhaulin' with Chip Foose :p
He is good but the problem is he got big fast when he was young and got pretty cocky about it. Hopefully he has matured a bit and humbled down.
same here! someone stole ours out of the neighborhood lock up. because we live in a condo we have to put it in a commonty lock up...it had locks and everything but someone cut the locks and still took it....
The first video of Laura’s I saw was the star key one, on the day she uploaded it. I’ve been a fan of her ever since, she’s really inspiring and very innovative, with her own unique style, both what she makes and how she films the build. Cheers for the long video Jimmy.👍🏻
Awesome as always. It’s so impressive that you have more creativity stashed away in boxes than I may ever have. It’s a testament to your lifelong pursuit of originality. Someday I hope to find just *one* creative outlet.
Awesome conversation with Laura! And Lincoln is pretty smart helping to grow the maker community... Think of all the welders they're going to sell!
Fantastic conversation with Laura. The trailer news is terrible. I don't understand why people do things like that. I hope it's found or you are able to get a new one. Thanks for sharing the Vlog, can't believe it's number 66 already, I always look forward to tuning in.
Hello Jimmy. Just want to say you're amazing. I subscribed to your channel after the first video i saw you making a wooden spoon with the bandsaw & carved by hand. Passed by where your old shop was 2 days ago just to take a picture of the Diresta stencil you welded to a pole in front. Also sorry to hear about your trailer being stolen i will keep an eye out for it. Keep up the awesome work & videos. Giovanny from Brooklyn.
Hi Jim, hope you enjoyed Cleveland. Was planning on meeting you and the other You Tubers at The Butcher and The Brewer, but my health just would not let it happen. Glad you enjoyed yourself and hope your friends did also. Loved your talk with Laura, smart girl. Thanks for all the video's especially of the building of your shop. The builder was a really smart guy and his methods were really different from the norm. Thanks
Wow your talk the two of you had was so insightful into how you look at things. Very interesting how you can create by what you see but also how two people can see differently when looking at the same thing. So sorry that someone stole your trailer and your right about it being insured but the point was that someone's was watching for a chance to steal it!!!
Laura (paraphrased) - "you leave the room just so you can come back in to look at the thing you made"... my God... I do that all the time. It's like I'm trying to surprise myself.
rippermcguinn a good trick when you are working on something is turn it upside down, leave the room, come back after a bit and see it differently.
Sorry to hear about the trailer being stolen.......What a bummer !! Hope you are on the road to recovery regarding the flu.
ps
I will be doing two demonstrations at Makers Central in May at Birmingham and can't wait to hang out with all the amazing makers .
Take care \m/
Chris .
The beginning of the video, the músic and the dog is hillarious. All the Best from Portugal.
Best of luck with the trailer Jimmy.
It's unfortunate buy these things happen more often then they should...
6:05 As someone currently at a vocational high school for welding and metal fabrication, this Lincoln welding school is great and all but now I have more competition
Anodize would be a nice finish option on that aluminum ✊️
Jimmy and Laura, 2 of the best channels out there! Thank you both!
Damn Jimmy, you're still in the prime of youth ! Great talk to listen to. Laura's youth is interesting, because it looks as if it's the same for hundreds of thousands of youth around the world. Sure was similar to my story as well. In the end it all ends up to what you really want to accomplish in life and creating a social group around you. Completely agree ! Keep it up guys, it's always very inspiring to watch your videos.
I know that feeling, I had some ladders stolen just before Christmas. The inconvenience is one thing, the invasion is something else entirely. Hope you find it brother.
Awesome to see a catch up video too, Manuka honey, garlic, ginger and turmeric with black pepper are the bomb for killing bugs. Not all together though lol!
"I'm Brett...I'm Jimmy's daughter."
Lost my shit on that one!
Dude! And Laura and April, I absolutely love this vlog above all others. THIS will be the one you’ll always remember.
Your 23 min vlog has taken me about 3 hours to watch! Listening to you two chillin in the cab of what I hope is a big 4 x 4 ( I’m Texan-it’s expected-ask April) lol. But honestly I’ve had to rewind and replay because as you two talk, I go Yeah, me too, and man I can use that in this and that...go back and forth. And then I start listening again and y’all are way ahead and I was afraid I missed some trick or on-site or inspiration. Lol it’s great.
9 times outta 10 when you get something stolen it's someone you know and trusted💯
Yo Jimmy, we built all of Lincoln Electric's signs right around the corner! If I had remembered you were coming through town, I would have invited you into the sign shop for a mini tour!
things got real out of hand in the back of that van there! haha great stuff man always enjoy seeing you!
I enjoyed watching your conversation with Laura. Bummer about the trailer. Thanks again Jimmy!
I liked this video a lot. It definitely shows how all of you have grown and evolved with each others support. Keep up the great work.
More interviews with this lady. You two really click and you are both able to talk so naturally. It was great when you spoke about your cinematography and photo journalism. Thumbs up
Ooooh, I got to the vlog in 360p. RUclips is really on their game in 2018. Love the dramatic intro. What up brother!
f5
same here.
Jimmy, you can make your own trailer now. Get $6000 from insurance and buy some steel.
Jim Garner Great idea! I know some people who built a foodservice trailer. Getting it approved by the DOT is easier than I thought. Since he can TIG weld now, he could use Aluminum.
That sucks that you've had the trailer stolen. Hope you get it back! Really great interview with Laura, she is such a cool person and it was nice to hear both of your thoughts. Thanks!!
Here in Georgia trailers are stolen all too often, that's why on mine I've cable locks on both wheels and a hitch-lock that covers the entire hitch. I do hate theives!
Hey jimmy. Have you tried tumbling sample aluminum parts with appropriate media? A lot of machine shops or tech schools have tumblers. It dulls the finish but makes everything uniform. Works great unless you’re looking for that high polished look.
The new trailer should get a LoJack or something 😉 Great mini-interview with Laura! Thanks for sharing!👍🍁
It was great to meet you at the event in Cleveland! I'm sorry your trailer got stolen. That's so crummy!
