I saw "Retirement" in the title and Quinns in the thumbnail, and my heart genuinely skipped a beat.
Don't do that to me Quinns.
I know!! Not cool XD
I had a heart attack...geez Quinns
Man, I'm always caught out by reuploads. The three years has turned into a decade.
They must be making $ or just forgo having a bird
In this episode of fun month, SU&SD give us an existential crisis!
Fun!
this is a Reupload from Vimeo from Oct 18, 2014
I played Survive! with my 3 kids. They decided it was a coop game, which I was fine with. My 4 year old tapped out mid-way and my wife joined it. She immediately devoured my daughter’s swimmer with a shark. Those kids had to grow up fast.
You married well
Once when I played with my wife and a friend, I noticed they were playing "nice", but I knew they'd turn on me once I started attacking them, so I rushed my most valuable people to the island and *then* started the war. It was super-mean.
Priceless
Quinns talking about retirement nearly seven years ago, and he's still going. I hope he keeps reviewing games until we're all very old.
Also, "Paul will be with me." :(
One last job. It's always one last job.
As a Brendan, I can't believe the prejudice I've had to face today. A new SUSD review used to be the highlight of my day, and now I just can't face it...
Counterpoint: all the Brendans lived in the end, so who really came out on top?
Quiet Brendan, no one cares.
As a Brendan, I fully support the survival of Brendans.
OMG my friend when I was a little kid in the 80s had Survive and I always thought it looked interesting, but never got to play it. Thanks for filling a little hole in my heart that I didn't even realize I had. Nostalgia comes when you least expect it.
The ending hits different in 2021 but I still really enjoyed watching this blast from the past.
Saw his old appartement, no wedding ring and dead sunflowers, thought Quince went through break up, but luckily it's an older video...
"But why is it metal coins are so exciting in board games and so . . . boring in real life?"
Oh my days, you're right!
I knew it was just a tease.
Also, Survive! is one of my all time favorites, I still have the original edition in my closet from 30 yrs ago, so glad you guys liked it as much as I do!
I own an original copy of Survive and damn it's a good game. Doesn't overstay its welcome and you can drown and chomp each other.
I grew up with an original edition of Survive... (cheap plastic everything, and cardboard boats) and i've always raved to anyone who will listen about what a great game it was. Thanks for the memories!
This weekend I got a new game for my collection and there was a Su&Sd-Recomends seal on the packaging foil.
Nice. Even they know where I saw this gem.
What was the game?
@@szymonfaat9505 "Escape from Aliens in outer space". Su&Sd has no video review for it but they mention it in a few podcasts and it got a written review.
Survive! is what got me into modern boardgames: we played it during a teambuilding event and that kicked off my desire to build a collection. Slightly sad as I gave away my copy last year, but it was so that a family had something to do during confinement so I'm happy with that. Black Fleet is also a lot of fun!
Just wanted to say thanks for re-uploading this video. Hadn't heard of Survive before, and after watching this, happened to spot the game at a local bookstore so decided to buy it. So glad I did! I've played a bunch now with different groups and everyone loves it!
I have the original Parker Brothers Survive in great shape, I'm glad people are still playing it
For me, it's because metal coins in real life remind me how little money I actually have :(
Just get all your money together as pennies, it’ll make you feel r i c h
Survive! was a huge crowdpleaser for my old board gaming group. Absolute gem.
Our family loves survive. With a mix of strategy and luck it is very repayable important when the kids love it. My kids got it from age 4 but it's a lot older before the year stop when you take out their big players and their joy at leaving you stranded next to a sea monster will never cease.
Omg I actually thought Quinns might actually be announcing his retirement at rhe beginning of the video... my heart... (I know that money as a boardgame reviewer is hard to come by for real).
I love everyone at SU&SD but I especially love you dear Quinns, I remember reading your stuff on RPS and how you were leaving to create this. May your years as boardgame reviewer be long and fruitful yet.
Good thing that this re-upload rec's Survive, because Black Fleet is utterly out of print nowadays.
@@Spearca only german copy I found was on geekmarket for 110€ :-D ... english version is easier, yes.
Survive! was absolutely my favorite board game when I was little. Damn the nostalgia.
I don't know when, but I had played it when I was much younger, but didn't remember it at all.. mid review something about it felt very familiar and looking on Boardgamegeek I found an old version and recognized it immediately
It was my favorite game as a kid too! ... and now it's my wife's favorite game
Wow Quinns, global pandemic seems to be taking years of ya
It's a re upload from like 6 yrs ago, but I thought the same😅
Apparently he's just always been that way, but "Covid has not been kind" was my first thought as well!
I have both when they originally were released and they have never left my game shelf. Survive gets played often and Black Fleet is a Beer and Pretzels game that I have introduced many non-gamers to with much success.
Survive! is a blast. We bough it a long time ago and it's not a game we play every time we get together, but it's such a solid fallback if we can't decide what to play. We all enjoy it, it's quick enough to play, and it's easy to teach new players.
I remember when I first played Escape From Atlantis at my mates house, I loved it so much I borrowed it for a week and my mam and dad bought a copy which they still have, my two kids sometimes play it when they go there! Great game!
I just got Xia last week and played it 3p for the first time on Friday night. It's all I can think about. I had stalked this game the year I followed it being out of print. Then one magical day last week I practically bumped the game off the shelf at my local game store. I was in disbelief... there it was. My white whale of a boardgame. I BOUGHT IT AND STILL CANNOT BEILIEVE IT IS SITTING HERE! Best of all? It lived up to the hype I had built up inside my head. Playing it again in a few hours and cannot wait. The joy of this hobby. I am so glad I stumbled into boardgaming as a lifelong video gamer.
Have you played the expansion by any chance?? It puts the game into my top 3 of all time for sure. It’s in stock on Amazon now as well. If you love Xia, I would really recommend Merchants & Marauders as well, it evokes the same feelings that Xia does. Take care!
@@-RTC- haha yes I owj the expansion since this comment. I also ow own Merchants and Marauders and almost prefer it to Xia now. I love both games so much.
@@RaffleSnaffle20 that’s awesome haha! I love both games as well, sandbox games seem to hit a sweet spot for me and my group! Do you have any other sandbox games you’d recommend? Thanks!
I recently bought Survive! based on this review. Absolutely love it
huh? this video was uploaded 22 mins ago?
@@rngesus8057 Well it’s a reupload from 2014
@@duckmaster17 ha paul was in it, i should of known
Totally worth the rewatch! I love Survive and have it and all the mini expansions in my collections.
Black Fleet looks like the kind of game I’m forever trying to design… in which the scenario is more of a concept than a faithful recreation, the mechanics are intuitive, design is streamlined, and fun is what’s paramount. Frankly, even seeing a game played on a single board is refreshing these days. Bravo to its creators!
RIP Brendan
That was a super satisfying stab sound. SU&SD's plug for Survive! makes me want go get it off the shelf and give it another go
As a Yankee (as a southern gentleman that hurts) but please keep this going! I love your channel and have a wishlist of a lot of games you have recommended
Survive is awesome! My dad has the original version. I've been playing this game since I was a kid and now my kids are also old enough to enjoy it.
Both games are in my collection and I both like them a lot. It might have even the original video release that convinced me to purchase Black Fleet. Great to revisit the goodies.
So just got escape from atlantis. Super fun. Like you said if it's obvious you can't win just create as much chaos as possible. Also I like how it was a long "3" years of game reviews. Like it's been a lifetime. Lol. Also PSA make sure your using the affiliate links. Edited because I did use the link. 😉
I find it interesting how despite there being no pandemic in 2014, it's still crazy enough to fit right in with the other pandemic-era reviews you guys have been doing lately.
Don't leave us!...and it's been 4 years now. FOUR Glorious years that have cost me hundreds of dollars buying games I see on your site: Thank You
The dead flowers really did it for me.
All that wet but none for the poor sunflowers
Kind of amazing the impact Shut up and sit down can have, this game literally went out of stock everywhere overnight except for $150+ on a $30 MSRP game
OMG, I totally forgot you occasionally reupload old videos. This one totally spooked me lol
I showed Survive off once to some customers while I worked at a game store. They bought a copy, then my boss fired me for 'playing in store time'.
Good game but that store going out of business put warmth in my broken, bitter heart
Holy hell. This video is seven years old now.
What a time!
But Quinns, you already convinced me to buy these! ...oh well, time to repurchase!
Me watching this video 6 years ago; It funny that Quins hasn't been able to see is best friend for over a month!
Me now: Bruh, me too.
And the feeling of buying games, but can't share the experience with your friends is so sad! =/
I want to play board games so bad but have nobody to play with but I still love to watch your videos
Survive is such an awesome game. I first heard of it in Tabletop Gaming magazine a few years ago, and since it was the 30th anniversary edition of the game, I was surprised I had never heard of it before. I suspect it was much popular in Europe than here in the U.S. I bought it right after I read the article, and it has been a hit with everyone I played it with.
I used to be a film critic. Now I have a normal job.
Until you took a copy of The Archer to the knee?
Oh god, it was a reupload!! Oh god. I experienced every emotion at once.
I swear this one standing, lively sunflower is sending angry sideways glances at me! *shivers*
A problem I found with Black Fleet was a feeding frenzy trigger on the weakest player. Once a player gets successfully attacked once, it is a sign to the other players to attack. This happens because the other players now know there is essentially no downside to attack this player. So once you get behind, you tend to stay behind as the other players know you are weaker and therefore a safer target.
I am fan of Merchants and Marauders.
I liked Brendan, what happened to Brendan.
Was he real or a figment of my warped mind?
Eaten by a giant squid. Quins opted to save a Pop Idol instead.
Brendan lives on in all our hearts and some of our loins.
What people forget is that Brendan is not 'a' Brendan, he is 'the' Brendan
@@unicornep1818 The Original, you might say?
It costs me somewhere between £30 and £60 to watch you videos, can you just take a break please or I may find myself single and homeless.
But you'll have a lot of cardboard boxes to make your new starter home...🤷♂️
Ordered survive yesterday. It’s a staple of the board game club in Dubai.
Survive is a game I had as a child, and had to get back as an adult.
It's chaotic, back-stabbing, fun.
Worth it just for the mention of Brendon and Paul
A game where a cargo ship gets stuck in slim canals, messing up several other ships' days?
Damn, the disbelief in that is strong.
I have a videogame design document for a turn based strategy game that I eventually set in space but was originally set in a fantasy pirate setting, and it's so unbelievably similar to this game that I wonder if I somehow watched this review back in the day, forgot all about it, and wrote the game design document off of that. But I genuinely don't remember seeing this review at all.
Edit: Okay it's not as close as I thought. The main similarity is cargo ships and pirate ships, and the relationship of one being able to carry 3 and the other being able to rob 1. I have settlements (space stations) and crew members. But I do think I saw this episode because I own Survive and I own it because of this channel.
I also just happen to do stand up comedy and you'd be amazed how often you wonder this about jokes when you hear someone do something similar.
So sunny in Brighton! I miss that city so much!
I have the older version of Survive, which is just called Escape From Atlantis and I LOVE that game! I prefer the components of the older version - the island pieces are 3D and the boats have little sails and are adorable.
Love the artistic statement of the dead sunflowers.
Oooh. Black Fleet is fun, gonna have to track down Survive.
LOL OH MY GOD!! its keeps getting better!! "The Brendan" LOL !! An special hug From far away to all the crew!!!
Escape from Atlantis always pains me as a memory because i had a deluxe version with beautiful miniatures for all monsters and tiles, it was all 3d and high quality. The different layers of the city became higher and more detailed (from rocky beach to noble districts) as you came closer to the center of Atlantis with the citadel towering above it all. All the people were well sculpted, the ships and monsters too. And it cost 60 euros back than, around 15 years ago.
The fun part? I lost it and never found that edition anywhere, not even a picture. The newer versions can't compare to it in any way, and i in turn can't get over losing it.
It was Waddington's edition but the miniature quality was higher than all the ones i saw on ebay. The people minis were all sculpted as men and women etc. But the box cover was Waddington's escape from Atlantis.
Quinns, let the sunflowers go. There will be others, besides the birds will love them if you just put them out for the little pikers. Great review. Putting this game on my acquisition list.
I like the review of Black Fleet, but an internet search comes up with it being out of print. Existing copies seems to be upcharged at 5 times the original price.
Oh my god!!!! How is it the 30th anniversary of Escape from Atlantis??? 😮 I have a first edition copy which has better plastic land pieces that rise to create a mountain of sorts in the centre. This along with valley of the dinosaurs which came out at the same time are still fun. My boys love them now as much as I did then! It had some differences though. There was a cool ball in a disc that you span to see what was under each tile. There were no whales but rather sea monsters (a cool tentacle), shark and dolphins (that could help you if you ended in the water). Thanks for another great game and keep avoiding the meds!
Thank you
Survive and Pompeii are our family game go to games.
Me; sees a review that I’ve seen before. Oh well
watches video anyway
Um... Tiny Epic Pirates has the same mechanics but adds crewmembers. LOL
omg I have an original copy of Survive out on my game table. we always loved it a thanksgiving
Look at that hairline!
My heart briefly soared when I thought this might be a new video with a Paul cameo. I miss you, Paul.
The atlantis game look familiar but different.
Some internet searching resulted in me finding out there was a version of this released in the UK that I had as a kid that had plastic island pieces along with slightly different rules (no random island setup, no numbers on people, the expansion built it), as well as a really weird dice replacement thing.

6:50 "Why are metal coins so exciting in boardgames and so boring in real life?"
I don't know, but it's so true. I ended up with a bunch of seemingly pointless metal coins after buying a bunch of Dominion expansions ages ago, and BY GOD my friends and I use those coins in literally every game that has currency. The second we open a new game and see a piece of cardboard with money to punch out, we toss it aside and shout "GET THE DOMINION COINS!"
Then we...immediately fish the cardboard money back out of the trash because we still need to know what the denominations are
Time travel is a thing now?
My parents were board game nerds in the 70's and I grew up playing Survive!. The version they had had plastic meeples with their value embossed underneath, but it had wooden seameeples of shark fins, whale tales and sea serpents that were a joy to float around.
Anyway, they were such board game nerds they used to write letters to Parker Brothers about stuff. And they actually wrote about a rules clarification with the terrain placement. My point being, you placed the land tiles incorrectly. The volcano space should be encircled with stone tiles, followed by forest tiles, and then lastly by sand tiles. Not shuffled. Anyway I know this video is old and this comment is likely worthless but I can't help myself
Wait. What year is it?
Ouch... pencil to the side of the head... hate when that happens. Seriously though, my copy of Survive 30th Anniversary Edition arrived today. It will hit the table this coming weekend. Pencils to the head notwithstanding, I have not purchased the expansions yet.
SU&SD was already so much fun!
Also, why run away when you have a car available?
1. You're not allowed to retire. Ever.
2. Warhammer Conquest on the back table? Sweeeeet.
It finally happened, Quinns lost his mind
I prefer The Downfall of Pompeii over Survive, and I've learned that Schadenfreude in Englisch and German are the same words, amazing!
I played the original Survive back in the day. 30th anniversary? I played it in the early 80's.
You should throw those sunflowers out Quinsy.
Wow, it wasn't until I went into the comments, that I figured out that it was a reupload. Maybe you guys could add that to the title as well? I was like "Why isn't Tom named when Quinns names everyone he is going to retire with?"
Where is the link to the Merchants and Marauders review?
what happen to his Merchants and Marauders Review
Those sunflowers:) thank you!
Sad they replaced the spinner from escape with a boring dice. I loved escape as a child, and the death spinner was part of that experience.
Say it ain’t so Quins! We will miss you. Oh, and the games sound like fun too.
No link to Merchants & Marauders in the video description
This is an old video isn't it? Both games came out 6-7 years ago.
The description of the video says when it was first uploaded.
You used the shark movement power tile to show adding a shark (that one has a red border denoting this, not gree.......ohh no, I have gone cross eyed!
Where did this video take place?
this originally came out in 2014!? I remember when this first came out. Has it really been 7 years?!
Those sunflowers look like the've been standing there since 2014
fyi this video isn't showing up on the "just the new stuff please" playlist @Shut up & Sit Down
I love you still own Dead of Winter.
