Love the truthfullness of this video..In my 30's and 40's I was the woman who coordinated everything..clothes, handbags, jewelry, scarves..2 years ago I turned 60 and just looked at all that I had accumulated and realized I truly was wearing about 10% of it. I donated over 50% of my things...over 300 pieces to a community clothes closet that supplies clothing to women in need. I felt good about it and I miss none of it. I still have too much... but find it soo much easier to choose daily what to wear and am doing the "hanger flip" method to see what I wear now..and am going to purge again this summer. Keep motivating people- we need too see realistic purges like this.
Me, too. I had tons of designer items, but I wore a uniform at work five days a week, and being wiped out on the weekends, I didn't often go anywhere. When I did it was always really stressful, as my clothes weren't really me. I had lost touch with what I liked. A few years and many purchases later, I did what you did and donated almost all of it. I'm still working on it as far as finding out what I truly love and I am finding that I don't really know what I will truly love until I wear it outside the home - somewhere like running errands or whatever. It's at that point that I think, Oh, I love this way more than I thought I would, or I'm surprised I don't like this as much as I thought I would. Then I dissect what about it I loved or didn't love. Now I'm getting to the point where I am understanding what works for me and what makes me happy before I even put them on. It helped that I first selected 47 items I was going to wear this season (by choosing my favorites and most-worn items first). Once I had that smaller selection, I could see more clearly what I had and how to put things together that worked for me. Most importantly, I no longer had those expensive items yelling at me to wear them and interfering with my choosing what I actually wanted to wear. Anyway, at 62, I am finding out that I am getting a wardrobe that I really love and that doesn't cause me anxiety when I go out. This is the first season I've done it and I'm looking forward to doing the next one.
This video was HUGE help..A uniform for my different tasks makes so much sense and that fantasy self is so true. I have evening gowns, found at a thrift store, but still nowhere to wear them..this helps so much..
My closet thanks you! I went in there & cleaned out two medium sized "trash bags" worth of clothes to include coats. Much of the things I still liked, but what good is liking an item if you don't wear it... EVER? So, the bags are in the back seat of my car ready to be donated. One rule I have made for myself while thrifting: I do not allow myself to look at clothes. I have more than a plenty so no need to even look.
Yay, Sandy! I have made a commitment to myself to not bring home any clothing for myself. I do buy some clothing to resale but I am committed to not buy anything for me. And I have to say that after making my “uniforms” I don’t feel the urge to even look at them. ❤️❤️❤️
It's sooo true about the "fantasy" person we're all buying for. I'm 36... if I haven't become this fantasy person who wears cool blazers and dress pants or wears fairy dresses, it's never gonna happen lol. You've motivated me to do a big purge that I've been needing to, and focus on finding the fewer, high quality pieces that are missing from my REAL self's wardrobe.
Oh my word! Yes! You explained it perfectly. If I haven’t turned into this fantasy self I have in my head by now…it ain’t gonna happen! Love this! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video. I like your idea of creating "uniforms" for different activities. I recently did a major clean out. I'd already done a clean out a couple years ago where I got rid of everything that didn't fit or I didn't love, but I still had a lot and it created too many choices. In all, I let go of about 40 pieces. I thought I might have regrets about some of them, but that hasn't happened (I did make about $250 selling on eBay and to a local second hand store. One of my criteria was to keep neutrals and items in just two accent colors that I know look good on me. I'm so happy with the end result!
Pam, I feel the same. I have no regrets with what I parted with because it released the burden I felt each time I walked into my closet knowing I had so many items I paid good money for and never wore. I love the end result. Thank you for sharing! ❤️❤️❤️
Love how you put into words what many of us are doing. We have all shopped those fantasy clothes that end up not worn and taking up real estate. I recently did the same as you. Losing 20 lbs was my motivation. It took several times through but now i have only those pieces I absolutely love and are timeless. Good work girl!
Helene, I love looking at clothing, and imagining myself dressing up to go to a cute cafe or having a girls day out. And you know what…it never happens! 😂 So, now I’m going to enjoy the idea of wearing the clothing but leave it on the rack. It’s kind of like planning a vacation. Sometimes the planning is more fun than the actual vacation. ❤️❤️❤️
I did this a few years ago after I retired from work. I downsized my house and now my closet is only 36" wide, so it was necessary. I now have more stay at home clothes and a few dressy outfits. I don't miss all those extra clothes and your right, my stress level has dropped.
Trisha, you are so right!!!! I would get stressed walking into my closet just to find something to wear. And for what reason???? Now, I know exactly what to wear for whatever activity I have going on that day. ❤️❤️❤️
That's the first time I have heard somebody put into words, what I am doing. Yes, the fantasy wardrobe I never wear. Shame on me. I start tomorrow. And I am cleaning it all out! Touché!
Janet, it hit me like a ton of bricks when I realized what I was doing. I was romanizing this life that I wasn’t actually living. It feels good to break free from it. ❤️❤️❤️
I watched your video last night of the closet and you were absolutely right more than half of the clothes in my closet is something I wanna wear not that I do wear same with shoes only ever wear tennis shoes. I can’t tell you how much you inspire me, and everybody else that watches your channel. and I know you’ve been overwhelmed and thought about giving it up but please don’t ever give it up. You bring so much pleasure to so many people and we need this right now. thank you for all you do.💕
Cathleen, your words are so sweet and I appreciate the support so very much. There are days I want to quit RUclips but I do love the creative process and it’s comments like yours that keeps me motivated to keep going. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️❤️❤️
I love the concept of the uniforms! I’m going to get started on that, I have been purging my closet little by little this past year, so this will give me a better system for what I need vs my fantasy self. Thankyou😊
Rita, it’s made my life so much easier. I can overthink everything and this was one of them. I got decision fatigue every morning when I had to decide what to wear. ❤️❤️❤️
I just finished cleaning out my closet. I got tired of having clothes that didn’t fit or no longer matched my lifestyle. Now, I can go in, pick an outfit and be me! We are totally on the same sheet of music. Simplify for more joy!!!!! Another perfect video, girl! Much love!❤
Brooke, that’s me, too! I was trying to live my “fantasy” life instead of being realistic. And in reality, I live a boring life that I LOVE and I just want to wear comfy clothes and look put together at the same time. Thank you so much for your support!!! ❤️❤️❤️
You chosed great outfit formulas!Looks great even if you are painting or scrubbing😉One outfit trick...If you roll your long sleeves just a little, outfits will look better and had more dimension!❤😊
Yay! I’m right there with you, Rose! I’m ready to have my entire home clutter free. It takes me a little longer to declutter since I’m making videos about it, but I’ll get there! ❤️❤️❤️
I realized a couple years ago that I really only ever feel like wearing T-shirts, button-up shirts, and sweaters with comfortable bottoms and shoes. It is so liberating to be able to look at outfits and say, "That's so pretty, but I'd probably never wear that unless I was playing a character on stage."
Laundry was on my agenda today and I missed your live 😞 but I was able to watch as i took a break. Sherri thank you so much for sharing this video. So needed to see it and I absolutely agree. My reality self needs to do this immediately. Thank you for opening my eyes. Hope you have a wonderful week. See you in the next one 🤗💓💕💞
Laura, that makes me happy that you got something out of this video. I had to come to the reality of my delusional non-existent fantasy life! 😂 there’s nothing wrong with having an ordinary life where we work, cook, clean, spend time with family and run errands. I kind of love my boring life and I had to come to terms with my clothing and be more realistic. ❤️❤️❤️
I take one bag to a nice Consignment Shop to sell and one bag to Goodwill to donate twice a year (Summer and Winter). That keeps some mad money coming in and my closet organized. And I too buy gently worn clothing on eBay when I see something I like that is too expensive and also shop after season items at my favorite shops. It’s a great system that I’ve had for many years. Glad to see you on board! 👍🏻👏🏻
Thanks, Sherri ! I found this video to be very helpful and will try this out in my closet. Let us know if you were able to keep this up and if this is making your life much more easier. Love your channels !😍🥰
Carole, I knew I had to do something because it bothered me every time I set foot inside my closet. It feels so good to know exactly what I will be wearing each day. One less thing I have to think about. ❤️❤️❤️
Oh my gosh, fantasy life style. You are so right, I need to realize what my reality clothing stil is. Not what I wish it was, because those clothes just hang in the closet. Time to get cracker....and no more buying just because I might wear it, someday!
Amen, Becky! It was time for me to grow up, put on my “big girl” pants and get in touch with my reality! 😂 No trips to the country club, the Oscars or jaunts to Paris are in my future! ❤️❤️
Wow what a transformation! And you can see… it may be tedious! However well worth the time! Thank you for sharing! Simple and clean. Have a blessed restful Sunday.
Great video! My closet purge is currently a work in progress. I’ve done a fall winter, and when I rotate to spring/summer I’ll purge again. It sure makes getting dressed easier, and I love my closet now that it’s not chaotic.
I agree with this explanation. Many of us have a vision of our fantasy life and what we would wear in it. Thats why we buy too many clothes for events that we don't go to, clothes that we don't work out in and for dates we don't go on. I haven't seen your other videos. Maybe you explain this in other declutters. I would like to see what you decluttered and why you eliminated the item. It's helpful to have some background. Also, are you selling or donating those items. If you are selling them, maybe you could share your size. Maybe someone would want to buy them. As a reseller, this could be good for your business and good for the planet.
I have 2 categories in my closet - dresses and jeans. I’m a dress gal. I love dresses. And I love jeans. I need to purge more though 🤦♀ I find if I try everything on it helps me in the decision making. So I will throw on a fave pair of jeans and try on every top with it. Then ask ‘can I wear this top with a skirt, nice pants, etc.’ I also sew and alter many of my items if needed. And I like buying secondhand. My dilemma is either purge more, or kick the hubby out of the walk-in closet. 😂
How awesome that you can sew! I wish I had picked up that skill from my mother. She could sew anything and now I wish I would have a had more of an interest. I love buying secondhand and since I can’t sew I do have a friend that does the alterations for me. Thank you for sharing. ❤️❤️❤️
It feels like I have been purging for years! I need to be ruthless about it. I tend to overthink and worry that I may need it someday. Silly to keep beautiful things just to have them, there is so much that I never wear. You always inspire me.
I am the EXACT same way!!!! I feel like the minute I let go of something, the next day I’ll need it. But, over my entire life I will say it has never happened. And I need to remember that when I declutter. But, it’s a fight every time. ❤️❤️❤️
@@The_Curated_Life You make it look so easy and I know that it is not. I admire you for getting it done. I am going into my closet tomorrow with the mantra "Do it the Sherri way!" I will let you know how it goes.
It feels so good to purge! And now I actually love everything in my closet and will get plenty of use from each item. It feels good to be realistic and not try to live up to my fantasy life. ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Sherri, I did purge a lot last year before moving into my new home last April and plan to do it again soon. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Kathy, I’ve purged so much over the past few years which isn’t a problem for me…the problem is bringing more stuff in my home! 😂 I need to get my act together and restrict what comes into my home. It’s an awful cycle! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm 66. I don't care about fashion, brand names, etc. I'm not buying for a fantasy self. I believe that I buy because I'm afraid that after retirement, we won't have the money for more. I always buy second-hand or clearance/sale/coupon, etc. I've lost weight and purged a couple of times, but still have a lot of clothing. I've decided that anything else I buy will be better quality stuff. I'm having to buy more warmer clothes cause with the weight loss has come being cold. Something I could never imagine when I was young and a lot heavier. So, fear seems to be the motivation for me. Love you and your videos, Sherri! Could watch every day.
Fear is a huge factor in what we hoard and overbuy. I am guilty of it, too! You are lovely and kind. Thank you for sharing and it makes me so happy you enjoy the videos.
Susan, the purse is so buttery soft! The racks are linked in my Amazon store. If you lived closer, you could have these. I’ll probably never use them again since I’m not buying clothing like I once was for eBay. ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! I just did this last week. I hope you checked pockets. I found $55. in a skirt pocket! I know I haven’t worn that skirt in at least 2 years.smh. Also, a trick I have seen is to turn the hangers around. When you wear something and put it back, hang it normally. Then, after a while, you can see what you are skipping over. Then you can decide if it’s time to let it go. Did I miss a live chat? On RUclips?? Shoot!🤦🏼♀️
Bonnie, we are on the same page because I check pockets in my clothes and when I’m at the thrift store! 😂 Turing the hangers around is a genius idea. Thank you! I did a premiere on both channels so I could Chat with everyone. I’m going to start doing this on Sundays. I enjoy interacting with all of you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I have a 3-way trick. At the beginning of the season I turn all the clothes facing away from the door of the closet. When I wear an item I turn it face forward. If I wear an item, but it doesn't need washing yet, I hang it with the hanger turned the other way ie still facing forward, but the hanger coming over the rack from the back. At the end of the season I make sure the slightly worn clothes all get washed so that body odour or unnoticed dirt doesn't get to set in while those items are "resting". As the season goes on, I pay some extra attention to the backward facing clothes, to see if there's an opportunity for them.
Amen sister. I agree with all u said. What is wrong with us. But I do love that Teddy Blake! Uuggg now guess what I might have to buy that. The struggle is real. I have no friends so purses take the place. LOL
Debra, I love the purse and I love that it’s also useful. I have one friend, my SIL, and she is the total opposite of me. She’s had one purse for 20 years, her fancy shoes are 20 years old and her clothing is minimal. I always joke with her about her one purse and 20 year old shoes but she can get dressed quicker than I can, that’s for sure! And she’s saved a lot more money than me by keeping it simple. ❤️❤️❤️
The only problem, for me, when it comes to folding clothes is that I forget what I have. Thats one reason why I got rid of the chest of drawers. If I can’t see everything, I’ll never wear it. Out of sight, out of mind. I will be revisiting my closet in a few months to see what else I can purge. Thank you for watching and commenting, Beth! ❤️❤️❤️

Wow you do it all! 😂 great job organizing those clothes! 😊 keep up the goodwork with your videos the curated life! ☺️
So satisfying! I need to do a huge purge as well. Thank you for the inspiration 😊
You are so welcome and thank you for watching and commenting. It means a lot. ❤️❤️❤️
Truly enjoyed your video today.
Thank you, Carolyn! ❤❤❤
Darling ………loved this I have that same bag love Teddy Blake / it’s so soft ! 😜 can you send me a link to your clothing wrack
Turing the hangers around is a genius idea. Thank you!
I did a premiere on both channels so I could
Chat with everyone.
Good job. You can makeore room if you fold all those white tshirts.
Smart girl.
Thank you, Linda! ❤️❤️❤️
I have a rule that if I buy something, a like an item must go into the donation bag.
That’s a great rule, Happy! That definitely helps cut down on having so much stuff. ❤️❤️❤️
