Been a vertex Boost user for over 5 years now,. Now have the new one as well, I have it after all my gain pedals before my Delay and reverb. Use it as a Volume pedal and lead boost ! This pedal is simple and perfect ! I will always have one of these on any/all my boards !
Nice! Yea it’s a great boost. I actually swapped it on my electric board because I got a LA Sound Design buffer/interface and I use all true bypass pedals now, but I use it for my acoustic gigs when I need a boost. Excellent pedal!!
Gigging player her. I am at the disposal of the house sound guy. I boost is indispensable if I want to get paid. I used to use a full frequency boost like that for solos. I noticed my bass would go up too tho and get muddy. Even on single lines. I typically play either a Marshall Plexi (20 Watt) or a Deluxe Reverb. Or both at the same time. The Marshall I keep just on the very edge of break up- headroom. The Fender I also keep on the edge. I like a clean boost that cuts bass, gooses the mids, and adds a touch of sparkle. RC Booster, Source Audio Zio, Klon etc. You are spot on though a clean boost on a board is a must.
Agreed, since I made this video I actually switched out the Vertex and use an RC Booster in that slot so I can roll out some bass. It sounds like you’re using the SV20, how do you like the tones?
That’s exactly how I use my vertex boost as well. After my gain stages. Archer > Ego comp > Timmy > Gain Changer > Jam tube dreamer > vertex boost. Great video!
For this reason alone, it is very difficult to gig with a dirty amp. Pedals into a clean amp is the best option for controlling your own levels. I currently use the TC Spark booster 4 knob version that is so versatile!
Totally agree. Not to mention, most venues have a clean amp available, one less thing to bring along to stay in control of your sound. Thanks for checking out the vid!
@@ilantaiebmusic that’s amazing, I love personal touches like that. I heard those guitars play great, I’ll definitely dive into your vids and check them out ✌️
Nice! I was never able to get up high enough above the mix with just an EQ shift, but technically a mid boost should work. Thanks for checking out the vid!
I have tried this approach but for me, I have found that using a Klon and/or a TS to bump the mids and cut some bass has been an effective way to cut through a mix for solos.
Fully agree, but I didn't understand this untill 6 years ago. I was in a band with a piano player with synths and had to work both volume and frequencies to be heard. I use the RC Booster as a clean boost at the end or the Timmy on my practice board. Also good to point out you probably want to reduce low frequenties, and pushing your tube amp harder adds more gain and compression.
Definitely, similar band for me (multiple guitars/synths/loud drummer) and if the guitar solo is at a moment of peak energy/volume for the band, it is even more of an issue! Glad you eventually got it sorted out, this was a huge live-and-learn moment for me I had to share
Really good video. I use a BD-2 type od with more EQ options always on exactly for this purpose, not only does the very slight EQ shift help my other drive pedals interact better, but it also acts as a master volume if I switch guitars
Good video. Back in the '90s I used an MXR Micro Amp for that exact purpose. I never trust the sound tech to know when to boost my solos. Now I typically use 2 different boost pedals: a clean boost and a modded BOSS Blues Driver with some gain. So if I have light drive or a straight clean tone running I can jump to a gained up lead tone above the drums and bass.
Thanks Cian, appreciate that. I agree, I think we all have to sort of be our own sound engineer and let the FOH engineer focus on the total sound of the band. Which clean boost are you using these days?
I went a little bit budget friendly with the clean boost. NUX Lacerate. It has a slightly higher gain mode you can access, but still only has one knob. I still have my 90s Micro Amp, but haven’t used it for years. I also have an EQ pedal on hand if I want to pick a specific frequency to boost. It helps if you have a slightly scooped rhythm going, then want to brings some mids up front for soloing. I’d like to check out the EP Sweet Boost sometime. 🤙
@@CianRourke oh nice, hey nothing wrong with an inexpensive pedal as long as it gets the job done! EQ's are great for so many uses, I've been contemplating picking one up. I had the Super Clean, it was really nice, transparent and had some EQ settings accessible via some dip switches on the side. Love Xotic pedals!
I have several options for a boost. I can use my overdrive pedal as a boost since my actual dirty tone comes from my Carvin Legacy Drive preamp. Also, the Legacy Drive has a boost function that is remotely switchable. Also in my rack mounted effects processor (for time based effects after the Legacy preamp) I have 1 or 2 presets in every bank dedicated to a lead tone with a volume boost. Depending on what your setup is, the possibilities are many for boosting your volume.
That sounds like a beast setup, those Carvin preamp pedals always caught my eye. Definitely sounds like you have a couple different ways to raise volume with a setup like yours! What rackmount post-FX are you using, Lexicon?
@@AndrewLynchMusic Right now I'm using an old ART Nitro unit in the rack. The rack stuff changes from time to time depending on how bored I get and what I find. Awesome video. I had same issue and i play professionally. My friends sat that they can never hear when i do a solo. So i end up getting a boost that a guitar tech made. The boost pedal was muddy and dark and muffled when i engage it. It change my tone and i hate it. So I'm getting the vertex boost mk2 this week.
Thank you Ansen! Sounds like maybe that pedal was broken - no good. The Vertex Boost is really great for this application. I’m currently using an Xotic RC Booster as my solo boost, I enjoy having the EQ option to remove some low end. Good luck!
Nice, I used that for a brief period when it came out! Love the EQ dip switches on the side too, wish they had put them on the outside of the EP Booster...
Ok I have 2 boost petals angry troll and super duper. I have two foot pedals that have boosters crunch frog and AC Plus. I am a huge fan on boost pedals and I have a boss EQ 20. Lol I have no problems being heard. I don't run my boost pedal or my EQ pedal through the loop I like them hitting the front of my amp that's just me. And the way I have my petals set up I can boost before or after love that part some great clean tones come from a couple boosters.
Absolutely, if you have a great tone coming from your guitar and amp, a simple boost pedal will add something without changing the entire DNA of the tone. Thanks for checking out the vid!

Hi Andrew, first of all great tips. I personally use an OD set up as boost and leave it on all the time, I just love the way it colours the tone. I also have a clean boost pedal but I use it to push the always on OD. To stand out I rely upon a mid boost given by either an EQ or my trusty Ibanez TS.
@@ManuelPassarella1 hey Manuel, glad you enjoyed the video. Boosting the mids is a great way to shift tonally and get a part to jump out of the mix as well, good call!
Kind of new to gigging. But as of now I use a TS808 reissue as a boost (gain at zero, level up). Thoughts on this? Right now my rig is a strat > soul food > 808 > stomp > fender tone master deluxe. Thank you!
Hey Conner! The Tubescreamer would fall into the “colored boost” category but its natural bump in the mids makes the guitar stand out for a lead part (and also fattens up those single coils). That sounds like an amazing setup!
on the sound chech i play without boost but when concert music starts i turn on my boost so im allways above everybody, so when solo comes i know it will be heard 😂😂😂
Hey Karl! Sort of, but a volume pedal would mean for the times that you are not at peak volume (the majority of the time), your signal would be slightly cut. This can a) affect the overall tone and b) be difficult to precisely manage setting the treadle between rhythm and lead volumes. I know players that do this, but for me it is MUCH easier to have the "boost level" as an addition of volume rather than a subtraction, and having a pushbutton takes the guesswork out of setting the volume pedal treadle with such precision. It's certainly an option though!
I agree, they certainly know how to market well. It is an excellent clean boost (with remarkably no coloration) and doubles as a really good signal buffer even when bypassed, add the compact size and the top-mounted jacks and it checks a lot of boxes…
