    What a great example of 'rowing your own race,' having faith in your fitness and each other.

      I always liked 'stay in the boat' and felt it was directed at me, being adhd before it was cool.

    "The momentum of the race has just shifted in the Husky's favor...it's time to go." What a game-changer call!!

      I tend to agree, played four queens at just the right moment, but also liked something to do with the dudes from Bong City burnt out their matches, in first 250, but I was probably reading into it.

      Also liked, as dubious as it sounded, 'hold them under!' It's more like something a Bear would do to a Husky, but I'll get over it, already have.

      2:50 My favorite part of this call is how his crew reacts.. if you listen closely you hear a growl from inside the Husky 8. I hear “MOVE” - I love this sport

    Just read Boys in the Boat and this gave me goosebumps! I would have loved to hear Moch's audio during the Final of the '36 Olympics!

    Thirty Five years or so ago lineup, bellevue, seattle, everett, bellevue, new jersey, issaquah, richland, tacoma, edmonds. Thank God for Mr. Gold brings it "home" (i.e. seattle guy) I am still shaking. I will never miss another race on the Cut, Sir. Erickson just smothered a Camel after that one.

    Respect to two very good coxes. Excellent technical calls from the California cox, who was very race aware as well. The Washington crew was just stronger. The Washington cox also did a good job over the back half of the race in timing his pushes, and keeping the crew moving along. Hard to pick between the two coxes, but I would possibly say the California cox was the better, but by the tiniest of margins.

    What a Great Washington Huskies tradition and sport , as a Champion canoe racer I know what it means for those who came before us to uphold a tradition of winning it all not for ourselves but for the whole community.

    Cal was gold powerful and scary. The launch got up there hastily when boats got close entering and that was a warning to the coxswains. Possibly a Pac 10 official on board probably about to blow the horn. To any non rowers that is a life or death situation. There's a lot of room to right but Cal was smart to hold toward middle of Cut? Push dawgs close to wall possibly. Bad strategy it was pre-planned obviously by Cal coach or cox.
    Cal Rowers maybe caught wind of their calm cox 'plan' prior to race maybe and backed off thinking it would work. They didn't seem burned out. They had swing whole race it's Cals thing. Dawgs cox wasn't having that steering obfuscation for his boys. Clearly the inside wall lane is fastest, but there is a limit if you 'see' the wall as the rower, knowing your oar is way out there somewhere and your consciousness at that time is gone. Very unusual race.
    Or, it was pure power and fitness. That's the likely answer. Husky Rowers this generation are big. Not like local guys anymore. Just bigger smarter Steve Austin faster etc. etc. And some chosen words at half the race by the coxswain, skillfully while thinking and steering bears over to not take any crap.
    Cal had weird into the Cut strategy. Honestly, as a Husky I think they should draw straws for that lane. It's just different coming from south wind. I'll get hung for that. Nothing like this in American Sports, jumps to Olympic Level after this one. Harvard would have a shot but they are afraid to get away from Daddy to get to the Cut. But, they would have stayed to right and just rowed their race much earlier before entrance to the Cut. What a ballgame! Dick Erickson would be proud on this day I sure am. But, we respect our competitors that's the whole point.

    Much talking by the cox. A distraction

    • @unclegeemus
      @unclegeemus Год назад

      I was in one of those decades before and don't remember that sheer volume. I'm hearing sensitive. A helicopter at beginning one year scared the living out of me. I just hope it wasn't that loud in this winning boat. Seemed he tempered talk and that's when dogs took the length. Maybe they would have won by 3 lengths as usual in that situation. But don't ask me I was 3 in 3rd 30 years ago. Cal looked damn good I'm surprised dogs got water but it was fun.

    He talks way too much and is at 100% most of the time. So much useless chatter. At this level of skill and athleticism you don't need a constant flow of verbal inanity.
