FYI, I bought those same LED lights with the 3 blade array of LEDs, and they just arrived today. The box looked a bit sketchy, but when I plugged them in and WOW those are bright! I was surprised but very happy with them. I can't wait to start my peppers and tomatoes! Thank you so much for the recommendation. I purchased one of these small lights last week. They are very bright and does well in a small area when down close to the seed cells. I noticed that down close there are darker areas of coverage, so the cell might need to be moved around. the other light you noted in the video (with the center area) might give better full coverage of light for germination. I have a light station with 4ft. LEDs for getting my transplants started, so the small light will be used to supply light to transplants as they get larger. Thanks for all your hard work on videos. I was really excited to see this clip-on lamp, as it would fit my needs well. However, I don't see this on the Amazon shop. The only thing there is a light bulb that seems to be this one. Are you supposed to provide your own clip-on fixture for this? The video suggests it is all one unit, no mention of it only being a light bulb. EDIT: Okay, I see now the fixture is sold separately. Some pretty bad reviews for the clamp fixtures, though.

I am getting ready to start my indoor seeds today, very excited! I bought the neem oil and peppermint oil. Do I start to spray my vegetable plants with that when I first transplant them outdoors? Also, do I continue with both of them along with baking soda spray once a week for preventatives? Should I stagger when I use the sprays?

If my cabbage and kale have already germinated but my peppers/eggplant haven't, do you keep the lights on 24/7 until the non-germinated seeds have broken the surface as well... before starting the on/off grow light cycle? Well I start them on a timer. So my lights are turned on from the beginning with a timer that has 16 hours on 8 hours off. Ill make that clearer next time. Anyway... more light is fine if you are germinating at different times or have limited space. You can stay at 16-8 until all germination is done. Hello, I am so glad I stumbled onto this specific question. I recently started my seeds, and some have already germinated. But others has not. I don't have much space so I am only doing one flat. I did over seed so will split them up.My worry was around the amount of light the germinated seeds will be getting... is too much light a issue?? Don't the germinated seeds need there 'dark' times as well??Should I worry about the seeds that are just breaking the soil, getting no light for 8 hours?? Or is that a nothing to worry about??Thank you
So glad to help. You need direct sun. I talk about an options of moving them out during the day even when cold, not freezing, and bringing them in late afternoon. That can work. Gary, do you have any videos currently about starting flowers inside that is more in depth than the ones you out out a few days ago? It's incredibly difficult to find information on it. My biggest question is can I start seed now under lights and keep them there until mid May? I understand they will get big and bushy but I have the room. I'm just curious if I'd be able to trim them back or what I should do. I'm hoping that starting this early would be an extra boost for may.
Ill try but perennials like 8-12 weeks. They can be cut back etc. Annual 4-6 weeks as you dont want them flowering in you seed sells. So, if I want to transition the seedlings to a large unheated hoophouse, when would I do that and would I need to harden the plants off before I do that?
If the hoop house plastic cuts back UV a good bit you dont have to be so cautious but that varies. Once the plants really get germinated indoors and have afew weeks growing, they can go out when you want. They just cant freeze of course. Cold is more of an issue waiting for germination. They will progress slower but they will be okay. FYI, I bought those same LED lights with the 3 blade array of LEDs, and they just arrived today. The box looked a bit sketchy, but when I plugged them in and WOW those are bright! I was surprised but very happy with them. I can't wait to start my peppers and tomatoes! Thank you so much for the recommendation. (The light was $15.99 on Amazon via your storefront and I got the clamped sockets at 2/12.99 . So thi set up is SO AFFORDABLE!)

I purchased one of these small lights last week. They are very bright and does well in a small area when down close to the seed cells. I noticed that down close there are darker areas of coverage, so the cell might need to be moved around. the other light you noted in the video (with the center area) might give better full coverage of light for germination. I have a light station with 4ft. LEDs for getting my transplants started, so the small light will be used to supply light to transplants as they get larger.

I was really excited to see this clip-on lamp, as it would fit my needs well. However, I don't see this on the Amazon shop. The only thing there is a light bulb that seems to be this one. Are you supposed to provide your own clip-on fixture for this? The video suggests it is all one unit, no mention of it only being a light bulb. EDIT: Okay, I see now the fixture is sold separately. Some pretty bad reviews for the clamp fixtures, though.

I am getting ready to start my indoor seeds today, very excited! I bought the neem oil and peppermint oil. Do I start to spray my vegetable plants with that when I first transplant them outdoors? Also, do I continue with both of them along with baking soda spray once a week for preventatives? Should I stagger when I use the sprays?

Thank you Gary! How do you manage the grow lights for seeds that are germinating at different times? If my cabbage and kale have already germinated but my peppers/eggplant haven't, do you keep the lights on 24/7 until the non-germinated seeds have broken the surface as well... before starting the on/off grow light cycle? Thanks!
Well I start them on a timer. So my lights are turned on from the beginning with a timer that has 16 hours on 8 hours off. Ill make that clearer next time. Anyway... more light is fine if you are germinating at different times or have limited space. You can stay at 16-8 until all germination is done.

Hello, I am so glad I stumbled onto this specific question. I recently started my seeds, and some have already germinated. But others has not. I don't have much space so I am only doing one flat. I did over seed so will split them up.My worry was around the amount of light the germinated seeds will be getting... is too much light a issue?? Don't the germinated seeds need there 'dark' times as well??Should I worry about the seeds that are just breaking the soil, getting no light for 8 hours?? Or is that a nothing to worry about??Thank you

So glad to help. You need direct sun. I talk about an options of moving them out during the day even when cold, not freezing, and bringing them in late afternoon. That can work. Much slower germination as its cold.

Gary, do you have any videos currently about starting flowers inside that is more in depth than the ones you out out a few days ago? It's incredibly difficult to find information on it. My biggest question is can I start seed now under lights and keep them there until mid May? I understand they will get big and bushy but I have the room. I'm just curious if I'd be able to trim them back or what I should do. I'm hoping that starting this early would be an extra boost for may.

Typically just start them 6-8 weeks before your last frost date.

Ill try but perennials like 8-12 weeks. They can be cut back etc. Annual 4-6 weeks as you dont want them flowering in you seed sells.

Wouldn't you want to use garden soil and/or potting mix when up potting instead of starting mix since plants are larger and have true leaves?
Its pretty close the same stuff. I use starting mix indoors that I sterilize. Outdoors I pot up in a potting mix like you mentioned.

I keep mine in sealed container in a cool dry place. Basically in the house.

I dont have a greenhouse but you could germination them inside for 2 weeks and put them out there. Depends on your plans.

So, if I want to transition the seedlings to a large unheated hoophouse, when would I do that and would I need to harden the plants off before I do that?
If the hoop house plastic cuts back UV a good bit you dont have to be so cautious but that varies. Once the plants really get germinated indoors and have afew weeks growing, they can go out when you want. They just cant freeze of course. Cold is more of an issue waiting for germination. They will progress slower but they will be okay.

How can you correct legginess? Are the plants compromised if the become leggy?
You really cant. The can adjust over time but i think it sets them back.

I use this for my location ALL THE TIME in gardening!

Question, I have a cold basement but not cold enough to freeze the pipes .how warm does it need to be in my basement in order to start seeds?
Depends on what you're growing. If you're growing cool weather crops, it's probably fine. Things like tomatoes, peppers, etc. It needs to be warm.
You can but youll want a heating mat for the warm weather crops like tomatoes and peppers.

How do you have an indoor garden without fungus gnats? No matter what I do when I indoor garden I ALWAYS get fungus gnats.
In the 2020 series I talk about using boiling water on the seed starting mix. That helps so much. None so far this year. Ive gone through like 10 bags.

Do you use heat mat?
I dont. I only recommend them for peppers if you want speed up germination or if you temps in your growing area is colder.
