I have been there though quite long ago: I can tell you stay sure water is extremely clear, the dark shades you see are nothing else than underwater vegetation (and of course I took my chances for swimming !!!). But as you pointed out, seldom you can see people in the water close to the shore, for most tourists there use to practice snorkeling or scuba diving , sometimes have a swim close to the coral reef (there are glass bottom boats for watching the underwater world taking as far as the barrier where you can swim with tropical fishes - it's a sea natural reserve so fishes are quite friendly and used to swimmers-).
