I totally agree. Titans have zero true identity and basically a placeholder for being abke to say "we have three classes to choose from". BUT even our punching identity can be replicated by hunters with their exotics as well....so basically hunters and warlocks can do what titans do but better. Also hunter and warlock exotics do waaaaay more than titan exotics do. Like cool I have two shield throws that can also stun champions, but wait, it doesn't even work because both shield throws arent even powerful enough to break a shield to stun....overall titans are lacking. The best exotic we had just git a nerf. Lorli. Something that was actually useful to the fireteam in high tier pve because of survivability purposes. But now......just another thing if the past. Titans do not have a single stand out exotic they just have a bunch if exotics they are meh or arw soooo niche you have to 100% build into it and nothing else just to make it work. And being ine dimensional isn't good

They had a diamond lance for stasis titan but they didn't turn that into a super. Instead, you get frosty punch. A easy way to play into the warrior archetype would be to tie each subclass with some sort of weapon typically used by a warrior.
I mean, solar has a hammer, void has a shield, but they just stopped there

Ok I'm at the five minute mark and forgive me if you mention this later on... But titans do have a clear Identity within the sandbox, if we continue with the RPG analogies; hunters are assassins/rogues, warlocks are mages/healers and Titans are your bastions/paladins/tanks. They are the class that at best holds the line, can take the most punishment, while also being the battering ram when needed, which means for the most part being melee-centric which of course entails hitting something as hard as you can. Most of the titan kit falls into that category; loreley, ursa, stronghold and citan's are a few exotics that reinforce that defensive shield fantasy, while exotics like synthoceps, wormgod's caress and insurmountable skullfort all uplift the melee aspects. Even the subclasses underline the tank mentality, behemoth: everything can be an icewall, sentinel: stand behind my shield, siege breaker: everything is a nail, juggernaut: get out of the way or get run over. Titan's are destiny's tank and that identity just keeps getting stronger, Loreley recently showed us what an unkillable tank looks like, and crest of the shooting star is still every titan main's favorite battering ram. If those two aspects aren't class defining... Then I don't know what is.

    • @PocketTuna

Hmmm...I can't say I disagree with you. It's just gameplay wise I don't feel it the way I do with the others. Titans are Destiny's tank but on many occasions its the least tanky. Shoulder charge isn't ohk anymore just to name a few. But yes I 100% agree with your points though.

    • @ALEXACEDEATH
      @ALEXACEDEATH 2 года назад +18

I do understand your point. Needing to constantly spec into 100 res to feel the true tank fantasy is a bit of a downer when warlock and hunter don't necessarily need 100 mobility or recovery to fully take advantage of their kits... But as for things like shoulder charge, I do understand the need behind nerfing it in pvp, but peregrine greaves and synthoceps have still kept it alive in pvp, while in pve it's still one of the strongest titan tools at base.
I think that for me the main issue with titan is that it's a class that constantly dances over the line between balanced and overpowered. I'm a hunter main, but I remember how easy it was a couple of years ago to play Titan. Whether it was the original arc buff, the first appearance of loreley or OEM, or how broken behemoth was out of the box, not to mention Ursa's being a must have in GMs a before. I think the main issue with them, is just how hard it is to balance their kit. It's either going to be overpowered or underwhelming...

    • @PocketTuna
      @PocketTuna  2 года назад +28

@@ALEXACEDEATH The fact that the titan class is either OP or useless in my opinion speaks to the lack of direction with the class.

    • @ALEXACEDEATH
      @ALEXACEDEATH 2 года назад +12

@@PocketTuna to be fair I said OP or underwhelming, not useless. I know for a fact that if you build into the titan, they can be a menace. Titans are still the only class that can solo one phase Gahlran as well as multiple raid bosses. And I’ve had to fight multiple titans in the crucible that despite all the nerfs, still feel like unkillable tanks.
Titans are hard to balance because their kit is oppressive to begin with. I believe they’re still fun to play in pve, but I’m thankful of all the multiple times they’ve been nerfed in pvp. Despite their nerfed kit, I’ve seen what a good titan player can do with it. In PvP at least, it demands that you learn how to use the kit and build into it.

Always thought of the Titan symbolizing the word Guardian. As the “tank” choice for Destiny, they’re the space soldier that’s straight to the point. Where the Hunter uses weapons, and Warlocks conjure raw energy, the Titan uses their body to control their power. When I say symbolizing the word “Guardian”, I mean when I think of someone or something guarding something, I’m expecting it be a large individual, willing to crush/destroy anything with their strength. Punching can get repetitive, but I mean that’s what Titans do.

I rock a Titan because I love Halo so much, and Destiny being made by the same peeps, it is reminiscent to Marine Spartans like Master Chief. I do agree that Bungo needs to add more capability to the Titan. Titans do have Kinght and Spartan/Roman themed armor, but not special attacks. It would be sweet to have a ranged melee attack such as a Javelin, or roaming Spear and Shield type of thing that does more than just slam the ground.

I tried to do like a magic knight (arc) or a viking style (solar) with Titan. But the idea of having more warrior themes for the class would be amazing. Arc being like a Samurai, doing a zantetsuken AOE, and flash striking with their arc-powered katana. Or with Stasis they have a viking style archetype with twin stasis battle axes. And Solar being a spartan with a spear and shield, utilizing high damaging counter attacks or something. All of them being the most powerful warriors throughout the history of Humankind, instead of just a genetic soldier that punches. Just sounds better

I'm also a titan main and one thing that bothers me aside from our identity being strictly "punch absolutely everything" is the weird interactions in some subclasses. For example, whole you're on your Behemoth super and you grab a diamond lance, your whole super gets consumed. Why not give us an empowered version of the lance if we grab it while super is active? Why not let us wield the lance as a weapon instead? That's another thing that bothers me about titan. So many wasted opportunites with out supers.

All the subclasses from how I think they should've been or already are
    Hunters
-Gunslingers(Solar): Cowboys: Could focus on gunplay
-Arcstriders(Arc): Martial artist: Melee focused, chain attacks and dodging
-Nightstalkers(Void): Traditional hunters: Disabling and stealth
-Revenant(Stasis): Shinobi + mountainclimbers: Should've leaned more into an identity instead of throw sickles. I don't blame bungie since I can't think of a gameplay fantasy and also the name seems like a second thought than anything. Ice ninja is a cool idea, just a hard one to make unique.
-Threadrunner(Strand): Martial artist + parkourist: Going of a limb, may be the most mobile class
    Warlocks
-Dawnblade(Solar): Archangel: Healing and restoration but also mobile skirmishers
-Stormcaller(Arc): Runic mage/sorcerer: Heavy on DPS and continuous damage
    -Voidwalker(Void): Vampires: Self sustainment
-Shadebiner(Stasis): Basic wizard: Personally, they could've been a defensive type warlock
-Architect(Strand): Psionic/esper: Don't like the super but like the idea of creating minions
    Titans
-Sunbreaker(Solar): Armourclad warriors/and blacksmiths?: Ranged and explosive damage? Mid-long range combat titan? Lean to the burn effect a bit more?
-Strikers(Arc): Brawlers, basic soldiers and maybe(stretching a lil bit) superheroes. Definetly inspired by hulk: Super fast, melee based shock troopers.
-Sentinel(void): The word "guardian" or paladins: Defensive AF
-Behemoth(Stasis): Personally I view them as a hulking monster, where in-lore strikers are coordinated "strikers", a behemoth shouldve been relentless and mindless giants: Gameplay wise should be true tanks, like strikers but way slower and hits 10x harder. Or physically/environmentally defensive unlike sentinels which are self-defensive/buffs teammates.
-Tyrant(Strand): Yeah I agree with you, I have nothing. I really wanted them to be lancers with a spear or halberd but instead we got slicey bois. Not a bad concept by design but the fact its a roaming super and titans version of void hunters blade super. I can see where they were going with, strand doesn't seem to fit the blunt weapons if that makes sense.
    Elements
--Solar: Pure damage and healing. Gunslingers are the heat of the barrel and bright shining confidence, dawnblades are the soothing and also burning radiance of the sun and sunbreakers are the volatility of the sun and to an extent represents molten metal of a forge perhaps.
--Arc: Melee, speed and continuous damage. Arcstriders are the flow of electricity, stormcallers are the conduction of lightning and strikers are the loud crackle of thunder. Bladedancers may be the flash of light from lightning.
--Void: Self sustainment and disabling. Nightstalkers are the inherit dark of the void/night, voidwalkers are the complete control of black holes and sentinels is the strength/durability of gravity/stars.
--Stasis: Disabling also but in my eyes should've been more tank-like. Revenant are the blizzard and snowstorms, shadebinders the darkness from stasis/lack of heat and behemoth the power of mountains, avalanches and glaciers.
--Strand: Unsure but they did say they are mobility based. I am unsure of their playstyles so I will go of what I think firsthand. Threadrunners is the freedom and flexibility of strings, architects the creation and weaving of reality + psychic energy in its purity and tyrants are......damn
    Verdict
Looking at this video, I don't necessarily disagree with you, a bit harsh it's true. I personally think bungie wasn't concerned with making all the subclasses culturally unique, just fitting an archetype in general. I don't think they were thinking gameplay first, fantasy second but its just the fantasy itself is centred in such a core level, it looks simple, rookie mistake and that's ok. It's just when the game progresses and more upgrades come up, we notice this more. Striker punch hard and fast, sentinels defend and sentinels go boom and burn. Stasis is a while nother story with all their subclasses. What is the identity of stasis subclasses as the individual hunters, titans and warlocks and not the gameplay loop of slow, freeze, shatter.
This is why the subclass specific armour ornaments slightly dissapointed me. Void armour looks great, they have the individual weapons there and it looks good. Solar armour could be better but the titan really represents that blacksmith/warrior idea. Dawnblades should've gotten wings like the sacred dawn exotic but its fine. Arc is the worst and that makes me incredibly sad, just zappy effects and blue stone, that's it and not worth the silver for a full set.
As a whole great analysis of a problem players often overlook and I don't blame em. PVP players especially care more about gameplay and titans got that down pact. Punching is basic but punching is what they do best. Strand looks great and lets hope the titans kit is dope.

Warlocks wield the light/darkness in it’s most raw state, not doing much to change it but to instead let the energy flow out of them or through a sword or staff.
Hunters wield the light/darkness by shaping it into tools. Gun, knife, bow, staff, knives, kama and soon rope dart, all these are how the Hunter sees themselves using the light the most effectively.
Lastly Titans, who use the light/darkness the most simplistically. “Multi-colored punch” is actually the best way to describe how Titans see themselves using the light effectively, because not much thought goes into it outside that. Even the tools they do get are very blunt and don’t stray far away from just hitting what’s in front of them or protecting what’s behind them. Now I’m not pushing the stereotype that Titans are dumb crayon eaters since Bungie wants to lean away from that, it’s just a matter of fact that the way that the way Titans wield the light is plain and simple and to the point, which also makes it troublesome.

The problem with Titans is that the classic trio (tank, mage, rogue) doesn't really fit well with post-medival settings with guns and such. Titans have to thread the needle of being as killable as other classes yet be an unstoppable force. PVP in particular make this problem much worse; if titans were truly and substantially tankier while still having access to the same weapons, PVP would be wrecked. Just look at Loreley Splendor: the one time that we Titans finally get to be a real tank (and Titans have to use the weakest offensive super in the game to get that tanky heal) and Bungie still say that it's unfair and then nerfed it. The Devs have to decide on whether Titans are meant to be tanks or not.
I do hope that Bungie can do something on the edges, at least. Say make Titans highly resistant to enemy stomps and area effects or transform rally barricades into Citan Rampart-style shoot-through walls. I would love to see Titans default having non-regenerating Halo-style overshields like with Icefall Mantles.

As for the style. literally so much pays homage to knights of old. Think King Arthur but instead of a longsword or claymore, it's his bare fists to show his sheer strength. [Also titans have a claymore to use]
As for the strand super, it's a homage to a fighting style that mixes dancing and combat. It's an ironic twist on the normally brutish warrior.

Biggest gripe I have is that all the themes that titans get can be performed better by the other classes. The "melee class" having some of the worst melee exotics where warlocks shine better with ophidians, necrotics, sanguine alchemy even. The "protector class" even though well of radiance outperforms bubble in 90% of situations and warlocks are the only class that can get restoration 2, warlocks as a support class outweigh the need of a titan protector. Only buff we have is woven mail, and it's not even exclusive. Or "the tank", when hunters have many exotics that give resistances like renewal grasps or omniocculus where titans have none except icefall mantles ig if you wanna be more immoble than u already are with the new shoudler charge nerf. If there's anything I want most of all, just bc titans are brutes, doesn't mean they can't have ranged attacks.... All we can do is punch in close range with some of the worst melees. And the best melees, are ranged. Same with the best supers, ranged. Make a diamond lance super, or more supers where we throw shit, or... get this... more than a single shutdown super... it's just annoying being so powerless in endgame activities and having to go to warlock or hunter just to extremely excell with insane support or hyper damage. While, yes, titans are definitely viable in GM's, they are nowhere near the best. You slap in a warlock and suddenly the GM is a hero nightfall. Or an invis hunter and the mars GM becomes a free win.

I wish the Titans embodied this aspect of uncontrolled chaos tempered by the warrior spirit they seem to have. I think they should be the front line warriors with the most destructive elemental abilities. I think Arc 3.0 did a little bit of that with the aspect that enhances their grenades (mainly storm). But I wish they were more like that. I’ve never had more fun playing a Titan that an arc 3.0 HOIL ability chaining monster. That’s the Titan fantasy for me. When someone asks what the blast radius of my abilities is, I want to reply “yes” and kill every red bar there is.

The giant knight who slays gods for fun. The whole point of the Titan is to be an unstoppable killing force. Even in the lore, a Titan went agonist an entire fallen house when part of the wall fell and he killed them all like they're nothing. Hunters are slow, stealthy and precise. Warlocks and the magic archangels that control time and space. Titans are just pure unstoppable forces of death and strength. Just pure unfiltered power.

Titans are supposed to represent strength, in a brutish or bezerker way. You are using your own body or own physical might to fight. Turning your body into a missile to slam into opponents, throwing heavy hammers at high speeds or holding a shield whilst it's being battered by enemy projectiles. If warlock is the use of the light in a raw form, and hunter is weaponising the light, titan is using the light to enhance and augment their strength.
Oh and the comment "protector is so broad", like saying "space mage" isn't broad at all. I don't understand how warlock is any more defined than titan, each subclass not really having a specific identity. Solar you throw swords and shoot fire OR heal your allies. Void you throw bombs OR you roam around exploding. Arc you chain lighting between foes OR just shoot a Lazer beam out of your fist. How is this comparable to the identities of hunter subclasses?

Enhance Teammates & Defend: (Void) Weapons of light 40% weapon buff with Ursa Furiosa, plus Overshield from a barrier that teammates can shoot through. Titian can DPS like a Hunter, but not as well. I think you hit the nail on the head on the reason why Titans have the lowest player count and it all comes down to that fantasy and fun. Even the Warlock rift plays into the fantasy as it's no different than a ward. Strand could have very easily been the engineer class. It would have fit with the lore that they are the battlefield tacticians. But instead they went with a class called berserker when we already have something that resembles a berserker. And now we miss put on something that could have not only fit with the theme of strand but would have synergies with the other classes as well. We already have woven mail which is like Tech armor they had the foundation to build off of but just seem to lack the inspiration to really get players jazzed about playing Titan. So instead they just overtune our abilities so we can at least be useful. The
Strand Titan could have been the engineer class. Lore wise that still fits with the battle field tactician as well as it easily synergizes with the other strand subclasses. I think of Mass Effect and how unique their engineer class is and how destructive they can be. But
Instead we get Tank/Support/Frontline/but this time you've got multiple dash melees and a painfully uninspired super. People keep saying mini gun but imagine if they leaned into the engineer theme and you could place multiple offensive turrets around. The effect could cause the explosions that tangle other enemies just like they've shown. Commander/leader type archetype would be useful here. I think Titan appeals to people who want to be in charge. So something like ‘target designation’ where team mates are encouraged to coordinate their attacks with targets you mark to receive damage bonus.
Also, I think the secondary appeal of Titan is its physique. The power fantasy is to be big, to negate damage, and to throw your weight around (greatswords, shields, hammers, axes, lances, demolitions). Some existing abilities do play into that. Strand Titan’s ‘banner’ aspect for example. Just need to do a bit more with it for the other classes. Missile arc titan is another decent effort, likewise Sentinel, and the hammers with healing from sunspots is nearly there. Behemoth running through crystals to shatter them = body as a weapon too.

Titans should be what they are. They should be bulky, powerful, and brutish. Barbaric but also protectors. Juggernauts and Defenders. Exploding punches, tanky, higher health, not too agile, armored warriors of death and destruction.

But even if there's no clear identity, I think that's entirely viable as an almost proud humbleness that much of the titan armor even hints to. Lots of "from unknown titan" and other things about going in to do the job and not caring if no one remembers who did it. Just taking that silent glory to the grave.

If they want Titan mains to be enthusiastic, then they should lean into the tank theme much further. Add environment altering effects, for example. The ability to damage the areas where combat occurs-even, when a super is activated, using parts of the stage to wreak havoc. I’d love to channel a super into strength to be able to lift and toss a Spider Tank. Or to be able to use Thundercrash for more than just a single hit. They missed a big opportunity to use the strand theme creatively with the Tank character model. Imagine using a Strand whip that could latch on to a single enemy and could then be used to fling that enemy around like a ball and chain-causing whatever shield they have or enemy type to be used against your enemies. Or being able to combine the strand with the huge burning maul hammer for extended reach with the strand connection acting like a guillotine wire.

Tbh, Idk why they left the super soldier theme. Some of the D1 armor sets are spartan like armor that fits it so well. In D2, they have leaned to far into the fantasy aspect rather than keeping a balance.
When it comes to subclasses, each Titan one may not have a template to go by like arcstrider is to monk, but they do have an overall theme. Strikers are supposed to be Juggernauts that are first into the fight & are the melee brawlers. Sentinels are the mini-tanks that can hold down the line and tactically dissemble enemy forces. Sunbreakers are supposed to be the legendary vanguard, the strongest solar class (at least according to lore). Behemoth is supposed to be a hybrid of tank & vanguard.
I don't think they need a template to go off, but their roles/abilities should be refined and defined clearer. For example, a tornado that doesn't have any interaction with solar 3.0 effects or aspects/fragments. They should update or finally give us a range, one and done super. Let us fucking chuck that maul!

Hunters are the cowboys or knife throwing precision specialist, the hunter trapper void user, and a bo staff electricity martial artist.

Take Behemoth for example; It's a fine class and get some good freezing and shattering. It comes into its identity best when you use Hoarfrost and the ice spear aspect. Now the Behemoth creates fortresses of ice and freezes anything that would dare push you and becomes the inevitable force of the Avalanche (with the exception of the Melee ability.... that's not great).
Siege Breaker is the same. A guy who creates Sunspots. But when you use Pheonix Cradle you are now a divine fire paladin that scorches foes and heals and rejuvenates your allies. Make sure your allies are running Time Dilation and Healing well mod.
