I've been appreciating the commentators drawing out from players what the weak points of their opponents' gameplay plans are. Pip had some really interesting observations about Hbox, and it was eye-opening for Soonsay to call some of Leffen's options "outdated". It helps break down the untouchable veneer of top players while also giving those players very tangible observations for them to improve from. As always, great job BTS team!
Yes, I like how he called it outdated, but not to talk trash. He elaborated how everyone is so cracked out on slide off DI, so he thought why not just take away the platforms as an option for leffen and back throw instead.
Soonsay won because he can execute several techniques that Leffen has no grasp off. Kindness, self reflection, and sportsmanship are just a few examples of these vital techs.
"One side of me wants to talk immense shit, because I KNOW THERE'S BEEN SOME JOHNS!" "Why don't I just take you back to the stone age? Welcome to the ground, baby!" Man, I like this guy. A great approach to playing the game and a great attitude. Melee is in good hands.
Some primal tribal part of my brain forces me to always support EU players, but soonsay seems like a super cool guy! We'll probably be seeing much more from him in top 8's in big tournaments in the future and I'm looking forward to it!
Interesting Soonsay is talking about how he uses back throw to keep them on the ground, chooses not to play the platform camp game and stays on the ground dash dancing in neutral, and also counterpicks FD that has no platforms - it’s cool to see how he has such a consistent game plan in that respect. I do expect though that we’ll see some adaptations against that soon (say)!
I remember that Radio Melee once asked something like "what is a good playstyle on a character that we haven't seen at the top level?", my first thought was a Fox fully willing to downthrow tech-chase. Guess I was sort of right, but I too underestimated backthrow.
Sure thing, let me write that down along with air time, you'll get this done by Monday good leffen. But I'm the meantime he could put on his big boy pants and take a loss like everyone does: crying quietly eating ice-cream.
I would not be super surprised if by the end they're saying pay this man his summit. When all he do is dashdance dashdance dashdance. His dashdance rhythms are so sexy
How do you know which player is which. I don’t see the controller port indicator On the foxes the red background means red shield and the green background means green shield?
the way i usually differentiate them is the character icon and stocks will be on the same side of the screen as the names at the top. so for example in this set Soonsay's name was in the top left side of the screen, and so his icon is in the bottom left, leffen's name was in the top right, and his icon was in the bottom right, so just look for which side of the screen the names are on, and their icon will be on that same side. Another way you could do it is by looking at the character icons, you will see soonsay's fox jacket has a red collar in the icon, and leffen's is white.
If there is not a port indicator, you should look to see, when a stock is lost, who is still moving their hands on the controller, and who is wiping their hand. When Soonsay takes Leffen's first stock, Leffen wipes his hand on his leg, and when Leffen takes Soonsay's first stock, Soonsay wipes his hand on his leg
There are four round robin pools, four players per pool. After pools they move onto the gauntlet phase. The best performing player in each pool skips the gauntlet and goes directly to winners side of final bracket. The other three players will play in a gauntlet against players from the other pools. After the gauntlet phase, the bottom two players from each pool will start in losers and the top two will start in winners. All of that is just to decide the seeding of the final bracket. It's a pretty complicated format but it’s just designed that way so we get to see as many different sets as possible.
The colour of the border behind the name shows which player is which. Soonsay has a red border because under his character icon it’s red. Then same rule for Leffen. It’s a green border because of the green character icon
Ah yes now I see it, but still Leffen's color is incorrect, should be white. In ditto's how is the viewer supposed to know who is which color. The best would be if the character image next to the players name has the same color. In most tourneys they already do this.
FOX DITTO IS 60-40

fox shine limit
WHEN WILL THEY IMPLEMENT BETTER RULES
How many of these did leffen actually talk about?
There needs to be a shine limit imo
Might as well throw in a Falco laser limit if you think that

Leffen played very well, but soonsay was just the better Player this time
Soonsay said Leffens play is “outdated”. Looks like Leffen gotta drop Respect Your Elders 2
Props to Soonsay taking advantage of the rule set
Soonsay won because he can execute several techniques that Leffen has no grasp off. Kindness, self reflection, and sportsmanship are just a few examples of these vital techs.

After this set, and the set against Mango, I'm a Soonsay stan now.
Soonsay is cool, gg
That was sick. I didn't see that coming
Really great set and commentary :)
Listening to Soonsay, what a smart guy! Really well spoken and clearly thoughtful.
I personally think an airtime limit would've really helped out here. Could've really changed the game in his favor.
Totally agree Lol

If fox dthrow was falcon dthrow I would agree with you, but fox's dthrow can just be totally unreactable since you can't see the tech animation.
Foxes down throw is not a reliable tech chase. It’s easily ambiguous DId to where you can’t see the tech animation
Soonsays play was fire here but also shout out Pip commentary

Soonsay's playstyle is so graceful. Very satisfying to watch.
I usually don't like fox because of how smothering he is, but I think it's cool in the fox ditto where they both smother each other.
Ooh, that sounded a little dirty
Leffen: “we need a fox back throw limit”
Say what you will, Leffen has some good points about the Fox Upsmash limit
"we need a shine limit"

How do you know which player is which. I don’t see the controller port indicator

Another way you could do it is by looking at the character icons, you will see soonsay's fox jacket has a red collar in the icon, and leffen's is white.
In this case, the color of the icon behind their percentage matches the color of the foxes' pants
Also. Leffen always uses neutral colored fox.
It's stupid. They should've added it to the characters on top in a ditto.
There needs to be a back throw limit imo
How the fuck is this man not sponsored

Next time add the color the player is using to the character otherwise we have no clue who's who in a ditto.
The colour of the border behind the name shows which player is which. Soonsay has a red border because under his character icon it’s red. Then same rule for Leffen. It’s a green border because of the green character icon
