Sailing to a tropical island in the middle of nowhere, using bottles of rum as currency, trading with the locals and living off of what we catch, days spent in powerade blue water, without another soul for miles around. These were the visions that we had when we first dreamt of Sailing the World. And after spending years fixing up our boat and saving enough cash, we had that exact experience. But what surprised us was that those experiences were just the tip of the iceberg, and to get there we’d have to overcome an insane number of challenges.
This is the second installment of our Recap series where we are telling our entire story from the very beginning over the course of 4 episodes. If you missed the first one make sure you watch it first. Now in real time we are currently preparing to hunker down for the winter here at D-Marin, Turgutreis in Turkey and we thought this would be the perfect time to dive into the big picture story of how we got here.

I lived by the ocean/bay for 15+ years and have always wanted to buy a sailboat and learn to sail. One day I saw a cheap 25ft sailboat for sale and my wife said, "Just buy it! We have been talking about doing it for over a decade!" so we bought it. Took me a few weeks of practice to learn on my own and watching RUclips videos on how to. Changed our lives. Best thing we have ever bought. Now we have a newer 34ft and the enjoyment everyone gets from it is amazing! My only regret is.... not buying a sailboat years earlier. 😕

Well they’re not only partners but also are a crew. Open sea is not the place for individualists. The gender roles are primal and solid there. She knows that he’s the guy she’s counting on to sort everything out when the shit hits the fan and she is his queen, so even when he’s out being an asshole and she is upset she shows the wisdom to take a step back, regroup and leave the discussion to a time when he’s feeling like crap because of his previous attitude.
Make no mistake, she’s one hell of a keeper too, you just can’t take any woman out to conditions like this.

Crazy how y'all grew up and now are seasoned sailors. It does take a special relationship to be together all the time. The molding of the "2 shall become 1" is reality. When you watch veteran couples sail or dock their boat, the couple moves as if they are an extension of the other without talking. What did you name your new dingy? To see how far you have come on your new boat and RUclips is monumental. And now a baby. Truly Blessed! 🎉🎉

In some of the worst places and things ive done in my lifetime I learned this...Its not that you have to do or experience something, but moreso that you GET TO. Look at life as the opportunity to suffer. WIthout suffering comes no growth. The more you suffer the more you will appreciate your accomplishments. So welcome your suffering because the victories are sweeter when its over.

Know you are all loved by many around the world. ❤ 46 years a teacher in the mountains, on the slopes and I can tell you one thing; it is difficult to learn from/teach a partner/spouse. We have a saying, joking/not; just because you sleep together doesn't mean you you ski together. Sadly, many a relationship/ experience destroyed.
The best way for Desiree to learn & feel comfortable is for her to be able to go out and sail! Get total feel and control of the boat. Same goes for baking a trailer, a wide open parking lot without a coach.... I share these this as I care so much about you. Sail on and treasure you sweet daughter as life is short.
