Why is there always this push for every new album a band puts out to be a complete sonic evolution, why can’t we just enjoy them doing their thing, in a sound they’ve absolutely nailed - it’s just good vibes lol, enjoy it
"Wallpaper Funk" is a great term. I was a little underwhelmed by this release and was hoping they would expand their canvas. Much of it sounds like they've got their sound and at this point aren't trying very hard. With your review, you've certainly found a way to make very interesting commentary on a somewhat uninteresting album.
Yeah, this is a return to home base type of record. I prefer their first two. Hope all is well, Robert. I’ve got a rather psychedelic album coming up in a new review soon - an exciting debut from a new band.
I was just going to comment the same thing. But you put it way more eloquently than I would’ve. For me Khruangbin peaked with “Con Todo el Mundo” and ever since then they’ve kinda been coasting. Let’s hope the slightly negative reception “A La Sala” has gotten will be the wake up call for Khruangbin to challenge/rethink their sound. Because ultimately I want them to succeed
On the contrary I think this album is amazing and they made a smart move going back to an "underground" sound..if they continued on in the style of their last album it would have been more commercial, vocals nearly on every track and a sort of dare I say parody sounding Khruangbin..this puts firmly back some much lost mystique that attracted me to them in the first place and that they were losing because of their mainstream success etc..
I’m a little disappointed about this new album… May 9th is undoubtly the greatest song, but the others are kind of « flat » for me. No catchy melody, no risk taken… The whole album is still pleasant though. I think I will need several listens to get used to it and enjoy it more.
Wallpaper? It’s a mistake to think about this band as if they’ve dispassionately calculated their sound. The reason why copy cat bands can’t duplicate their success is because of Khruangbin’s chemistry and their high level musicianship. A la Sala is an album that requires more than a couple listens. I’m a big fan and I respect their artistry.
Same. To clarify, wallpaper funk is a phrase that Anthony Fantano used to criticize their music. I’m asking whether that’s appropriate, and like I said, I don’t think it is.
Hello, I wasn’t disagreeing with your commentary and sorry for not making that clear. My main view is that in the beginning Khruangbin never asked themselves, “What will be our sound”? Their sound is simply the organic result of the special chemistry that happens when they play together. If any of the three were to be replaced then it isn’t Khruangbin (just any member of these trios would have been irreplaceable: Cream, CS&N, The Police, Rush w/ Neil). Also, I’d say that to “get” their music it needs to be FELT, not merely listened to with an analytical mind. I’ve seen online commentary preoccupied with defining what genre it is while disregarding the musicians’ emotional expression.
Glad you appreciated DJ's drumming skill.
The eb and flow of love international is just so beautiful to me I love this album!
Yeah, that’s a top track dynamics wise. Thanks for watching

Yep, I'm over here enjoyin it
Intuitively you’d think wallpaper and funk would be an oxymoron. But that tag perfectly encapsulates Khruangbin’s sound, especially their latest album
It's who they are.. I like the feel as there's on gaps , it just flows..
I'm really enjoying this one
Great review. Can’t for the life of me understand why fantano have it a 4
Thanks! He has always been bored by Khruangbin, so at least he’s consistent.
@@MattOLearyMusic tbh I feel like he’s bored with his job, and that spills over into some of his reviews. Rather cynical these days at the very least.
@@bwags77Should we assume the reviews that are giving you the feeling that Fantano is bored with his job are the same reviews you don’t agree with?
@@waynedexter Yes lol
please do submarine by the marias!
added to the queue 💙

You left out my favorite song on the album. Juegos Y Nubes.

I get it. I’ve sort of accepted that they’re not gonna do anything super adventurous, but enjoy it for what it is.
@@MattOLearyMusic I think I do too 😅

I haven't given up on this album yet, but after the first listen I was a tad disappointed.
Currently at the most I'd give it a 6 out of 10.
I get it. Not as good as their first two, for me.
this is a wallpaper review
IMO this album was Mordechai 2.0
This album is SLEEEEEPY AF .. AKA: Boring lmao
