I hope we eventually reach a point where Cal is the main character and we get occasional Anthony cameos
Nah Cal works better as a side character
careful what you wish for
Who the hell is Anthony???
been waiting for the new cal album PATIENTLY
@@po9t Bro same
I love we're getting more skits recently
ah yarse
srsly. (what is me casa?)
I feel like he's gonna kill Cal at some point (I know he's already done it before). It's like that cliche in TV shows where they show one character too much because the writers are about to kill them off.

post-season 6 Spongebob vibes
Khruangbin has perfected the art of conjuring chill stoner vibes but it gets on my nerves that they don’t try to put out something more ambitious with the talent they obviously have
Fr, what fantano said about it being too clean is facts, it's music that seems on the surface like it would be fun to trip to, but once you're tripping it's too one-dimensional and one-note to actually engage you as much as you want. I speak from experience lol.
They don’t even have to be too ambitious. May 9th is a breath of fresh air because it’s a 6-2-5-1 sequence instead of a one chord vamp. “Ambitious” could be well thought out melodies over their sound, tinkering with the production, stark key changes, whatever. Khruangbin has a great thing going, but they can’t seemed to be bothered evolve even the slightest.
Uhhh have you heard their dub album? Or the album with Touré??
check out their album Ali its so cool
@@greglamotte2536Hahaha I literally tried listening to them a couple of days ago on acid, was bored for 30 seconds that felt like eternity, and then switched the playlist back to Grimes. But I might give them a spin on April 20th, it’s perfect stoner music
Anthony, you cant give it a 4 just because you dont understand Spanish.
He gave Natalia Lafourcade a 9/10.
@@jose_glz Anthony, you can't just give Natalia a 9 just because you don't understand Spanish.
Lmao
Didn’t know Cal released a new mixtape AND we got a new Fantano 10!
🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
"This mixtape ain't FREEEEE"
I see Cal. I click
If the album cover was yellow instead this would have been an 8
For anyone who does dig this bands sound, their collab projects, Texas Sun and Texas Moon, with Leon Bridges are some of the grooviest, vibiest EPs I've enjoyed in a long time
Such a great album
Honestly the one ep of theirs I didn’t enjoy, but I absolutely love every single other record they’ve put out. The farka toure Ali album was a highlight.
@@AaronSimond love that Ali album
I didn’t like Texas sun lol probably least favorite EP they did. Con todo el Mundo and the Universe smiles upon you are much better imo
One of my favorite memories of Kruangbin is seeing them WAY before they were famous, back in like 2011 at a local club called Fitzgerald's which was less than a block from my apartment. I thought they were really amazing musicians, and I'm glad they've continued to thrive!
r.i.p. Fitz , also I feel bad if your apartment was on that block
@@telequacker-9529 I actually loved it at the time! I was in my early-mid-20's and partied a lot. Drank and smoked at my house, then walked over to Fitz! Sometimes my musician friends would come by to chill, or ask me to sell merch at Fitz because they knew I was close by. I miss it.
I miss Fitz 💔
Melon may have given this album a 4 but khruangbin make the best goddamn background elevator music and I personally would give it an 8
This is the proper review. My biggest critique with Fantano is that his perspective and genre he judges with is not always congruent with the music, obviously making it bad.
He said he doesn’t like instrumental music…okay, why expect this album to be more than what the artist clearly embody? As an indie album or jazz or whatever vocal album, yeah this sucks.
But as a background/environment music album? Yeah this is an 8.
@@juicyjames2074 Exactly lol. I liked their previous record and the groovy/vocal focused tracks, but Ive been listening to this record on the bus and it's very relaxing. I was surprised when he gave this a 4
This is how I have always felt.
@@juicyjames2074 in the video he tells us what perspective he's coming at it from? he says that listening to this from a place of causal enjoyment with the hopes of feeling engaged that the album does not excel. maybe he could give more qualifications and examples of perspectives that would appreciate the art but at a certain point we have to actually try listen to each other critically and not expect to be spoon fed everything
@@juicyjames2074no it’s not, it’s really boring. Sorry to agree with fantano here, there are thousands and thousands of instrumental albums that leave more of an impression than this even within the literal ambient genre
Went to a Khruangbin show years ago, small venue 500 people or so. A few years later I hear their songs every time I shop in Tesco. Its Weird. I do still think Con Todo El Mundo has some fantastic tunes on it though
Con Todo El Mundo is a great album, there are so many more memorable songs on that record than this new one. I’m sad they’ve leaned so hard into the pleasant background music lane that finds them being played in every other clothes store and coffee shop.
@@GuerillaRadio848con todo el Mundo will probably be played more in stores than this album…none of the songs on this album are punchy enough to be played in a store. So arguably they are leaning away from that and more toward a retro and timeless record. Also being played in stores isn’t the bad thing you think it is, it means they are successful, nothing wrong with success. Lots of different music is also played in stores, doesn’t mean it’s just “pleasant background music” or it’s automatically “bad”
Anytime Anthony complains about an album being kinda boring wallpaper music I know I'm going to really like it.
Facts
I agree with him, but I'm biased because I have never really liked them or their sound, haven't found a single song i can say I like or find interesting.
It’s alright but it is just alright. 5-6 out of 10
It's okay to like boring music
I love this album lol maybe not as much as their first album but it’s still amazing nonetheless and it’s growing on me more and more. Khruangbin is it’s Iykyk kinda thing. You get it or you don’t
Idk I really liked the album it’s great to throw on the vinyl while I’m cooking or at work. It helps me focus and it sounds great after a doobie.
i feel like thats the worst thing you could say about an album while techinically complimenting it
"this is music I don't want to actively listen to."
@@ARFPheonix It might not be a good active listen but again you have to consider what the purpose of the album is. I've been listening to it on my morning bus rides when I'm still half asleep and it's great background music.
@@ARFPheonix”music isn’t music unless I’m listening alone at a table and joylessly taking notes”
I think that’s what he’s saying here. Put it on as background and forget about it. Nothing memorable. Not worth the active listen.
Criticizing Khruangbin for being too mellow and vibey is like criticizing a death metal band for being incoherent
idk i feel like this album is their most boring release yet. im speaking as a major fan of the band.
I thought their other albums were more interesting. First three albums are on repeat much more than A La Sala
@@hinanners1194I agree. Great band, but this is their least impressive one yet IMO
This album on first listen was okay for me but the more and more I listen to it the more I find myself liking it more. Same thing happened with mordecai. I think it’s because I hear the bass lines and guitar licks and instantly want to play them and have my own chill vibe sesh 🤷♂️
@@hinanners1194 completely disagree. there is a specific and nuanced vibe with this album. this album encapsulates the sunday afternoon, home alone feeling that I rarely hear in a full length album.
4 is wild it is a beautiful album
If you think that by bringing Cal back and inserting him into every review, that I'm gonna watch your reviews more often now--you're right
for the love of god, never lock Cal in the basement again.
This album was such a snoozefest. I love Khruangbin, The universe smiles upon you is a top 10 album for me, but this one is sooo boring
Totally with you on this!
Listen again
Definitely a very interesting album. I don’t hear enough music like this anymore. If you could review Jobe’s new album Jobe VII that would be amazing. I genuinely believe it is a great rock album. I’ve heard some people say that I am Jobe and that asking Anthony to review my own music would be wrong. I’m not him. I’m just a really big fan and close friend of his. The new Jobe album Jobe VII provides a very organic, very unique sound that rock music doesn’t have anymore. Rock music, from what I’m hearing on the radio, all sounds like either X Ambassadors (the band that killed rock) or Coldplay. Jobe doesn’t do that. Jobe does his own thing. Jobe-being so young himself-may put some people off by just being a teenage musician. That’s very wrong, and I think Anthony reviewing it would be very good for him and allow people to take him more seriously as a creative. The production is quite sloppy and so is the recording, but like I said in my previous comment I think that adds to the charm. It’s very endearing listening to such a young musician try out genres he’s clearly never tried before and work more on the music he is comfortable with. Just would love to see a review on the album. Thanks! :-)
This Jobe guy sounds great and i do not have a restraining order against him and i was not - in any way - paid 5000 $ to say this
@@GamingTheizYeah, I can confirm. he’s great and definitely not keeping my wife and kids locked in his basement
Job rules! He definitely didn't make me create 40 sock puppet accounts so I could upvote my own comment hoping Fantano throws some entirely undeserved exposure my way. I mean, Jobe's way.
Jobehova's witnesses going door to door on youtube smh
I must say Anthony, your thumbnail game has been on-point as of late. Keep it up! 😊
words do not describe how happy i am to see cal in all the new reviews this year
Omg! We finally got a 10 from fantano in 2024! 🎉
I Checked The Desc, But It Said "4/10" (you did get me good though!)
OH BROTHER THIS GUY STINKS
Lol I’ll smack the shit out of you I literally started holding my breathe like boy it’s no way 😂

those thumbnails just go insane
Man. The skits and thumbnails are off the charts. Dayum Anthony
We're just never gonna agree about Marks guitar playing man. I think his riffs and soloing is fucking phenomenal, has insanely talented and there's so much emotion and beauty in each note.
fair score anthony. I think i’ve heard more interesting stuff from them as well but you can’t deny they make very easy to listen to, background music and are actually really entertaining live!
Nah this is a 9/10 (I have not watched the video yet)
Well get ready to change your opinion
This album was so fucking sleepy lmao.. may ninth is incredible tho
@@danielskoldberg142 hahah I agree. Nice background music
My intro to this band was at a skatepark. I was the first one there since they just opened for the day and they had Khruangbin’s music playing over the speakers. Vibe city. I don’t think people are rushing to listen to this band for a real listening experience, just for background atmosphere.
I haven't heard this album yet and I'm worried that it was described as "stripped down" but yeah they're vibe music, and high calibre vibe music at that. Some of their older albums are great chill party / art gallery music, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm sure their concerts are great and attract cool people
@@nevadanate4957 I was at the Echo Beach show that was recorded as a live album. I wasn't the biggest fan of the band heading into it, but their sound translated surprisingly well live. Still had the chill vibeyness to it but the grooves had a little more UUMPH to it. And they did a 15 min jam of hip-hop samples which was cool.
He's been living in that square all these years.
Anyone notice the cover looks like The Slow Rush??
Not all music has to try hard to be at the forefront when you listen to it, sometimes a nice chill background listen or a relaxed linker in your playlist is exactly what you need
are you reviewing The Sunset Violent by Mount Kimbie?
If Cal had his own channel with full time content with a Patreon I would remain a patron forever.
That's a crazy thumbnail man, banger
I love the it feels like anthony picked the perfect year where were having a bunch of great albums come out to also include more Cal cameos and up the thumbnail game of the videos
Cannot overstate how excited I am to see more Cal skits omg.
Have you ever listened to Margot and the Nuclear So and So's? I think they're really interesting, particularly on their first album, The Dust Of Retreat.
Khruangbin fanatic here and I respect people's opinion on this album and the band but I personally can't get enough of them. I can put on their music and get lost in whatever I'm doing. Sure, they're not doing too much groundbreaking stuff but good music doesn't always have to be that. Kinda selfishly glad there are people that don't like them so hopefully they don't blow up too much and ticket prices become astronomical
that thumbnail with Cal passing by casually IN the album cover lmoa
Cal in 2 April videos now, I believe 🥰
khruangbin is definitely one of my fav bands, but especially after seeing them live i really do want to see them turn it up a notch on album. when they play live the songs are much more dynamic (especially when mark spear starts shredding) though i do love me some peak background music
I'm excited to listen to this - I love Khruangbin
Waiting for that Eunuchs review, Anthony. You know you have to.
Came here to say how much I love seeing Cal back so frequently, apparently I’m not alone
Love the idea that cal just saunters around his house without intention.
I trust Khruangbin’s creative decisions. The music has always captivated me.
finally, a thumbnail that isnt clickbait
once again mr. melon i implore you to review "The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions" by Vegyn, it is a truly phenomenal record
Here we go!
Happy to see Cal escaped that maze and is now living in a casa.
Need a Venn diagram of the Whack Cal Zone and Khruangbin album covers.
Khruangbin is way too prolific for a band with no ideas
Ideas are overrated
1:09 fantano’s succinct description of khruangbin would probably work perfectly as an AI prompt on Suno
@theneedledrop can you view these soul/R&B artists -- Thee Scared Souls and Jalen Ngonda?
Using CAL for click bait is crazy
It definitely works though
i've never looked at an album cover longer lol
All of the "but you have to listen to then live!" Arguments just make me want to listen to Grateful dead. Theres a band that actually made memorable music
Kruangbin are one of those bands that specifically focus on the live experience. Listening to their music on record is a bit of a drag, but watching them perform it in person is hypnotic.
The bass is supposed to be the interest in the mixing. I like it
I need more Cal Chuchesta walking into the album art
Anthony Fantano try not to get bored while listening to relaxing/chill music challenge (impossible)
7/10 needs more Khruangchillas
Since I do appreciate the Khruangbin vibes, can you direct me to some of that sweet 60s/70s slightly psychedelic bands you’re referring to? Curious to explore that.
david axelrod, tinariwen, newer look at: kikagaku moyo, Altin Gun.
@@andrewlinn7816 thanks!
Todavia Viva is the Jam. I play that at a lot of different events as an opener or in a set. I'll say you nailed it though. They're always gonna give you one or two solid songs that jam.
appreciate how prominent black acre are on that shirt design.
Anthony please tell Cal to answer his emails. I sent him some beats I think he'll like but he hasn’t got back to me yet.
Cal Cuchesta sounds like if a very young person had a baby with a very old person
Imagine you could plug headphones into a lava lamp.
¡A la sala! ¡A dormir al sillón!
Damn I thought the thumbnail was the actual album art
0:12 oh shoot he use the hivemind sound
after listening to them for the first time i get a review of them, incredible timing
Same!
I need a Cal Dignan crossover
Can someone leave me some suggestions of the other options within this lane that Fantano was talking about?
I’d also like to know this
Did a quick search. I stand by 6 of these. Know some... don't know others.

Happy cal chuchesta is showing up more
5:59 Jokes on you, Melon, I don't have a local record shop 😭
This is an 8 for me. Perfect chill vibes. I love playing this while working. Exactly what I was expecting from them.
Just watching these reviews for Cal lore now
Same opinion of this band since LP2. "Welp, this album is certainly more Khruangbin."
i saw this video and decided to give the album a listen before watching the review, having the album fresh I heard your comments about it and I definitely agree about the nice grooves and rythm being kind of purpose-less and not really giving any emotion or message. Personally I'd rate it a 6, pretty good album for a background listen but not really to deep listen or analyze.
Khruangbin is goated, but this video is gonna hit a milli just from Cal in the thumbnail
I love studying to Khruagbin everything he's criticizing them for is perfect for studying or just relaxing to for me personally
Yo we need the ritchie review bruh
I didn’t know Cal released a new mixtape!
They're writing for the algorithm
I love that Cal is around a lot more these days.
This is the epitome of “I have too high of an IQ for this”
I just really love instrumental album, what 60's psychedelic album as no lyrics in? I think there's not a bunch and the audio quality must suck
I do think this particular album is a little underwhelming, but to me, Anthony disliking this band so much overall shows the issue with (pretty much) always listening to music to review or analyze it - you have no need or room to appreciate vibe-y background stuff that just, y'know, is nice to listen to. And makes up, well, a lot of the music people actually listen to everyday now.
It's an entire genre of music that a lot of people love (see chill beats to study/relax to). I don't think anyone would argue Khruangbin is the best, most revolutionary band ever, but sometimes I don't need that. I need some nice stuff to listen to and not think too much about while I'm working or chilling with friends. And I think Khruangbin really understand that that's what they do well and nail it overall. Which is why I love them!
Anyway, this is just a random thought I had to get out of my head. Love the reviews!
My jam band friends love this band. I think it makes them feel like they like stuff that's not jam bands too, without being a well versed hipster which they are a little taken aback by.
My brother said, he used to see this band before they got big, but they went under a boring moniker and nobody paid attention. They put on wigs and changed their name, and boom.
Another excellent review I agree with. It's agree with fantano year 2024
I'm glad cal shows up so much more
if it was called al la salsa, you would given it a 10, melon
I heard khruangbin playing on the speakers at an rei
LIL MABU JUST DROPPED THE BEST ALBUM OF THE CENTURY!!!
Sadly I agree, I love Con Todo El Mundo - that record has variety and plenty of memorable tracks and riffs, but everything since has been perfectly pleasant but pretty forgettable. They are a great live band though and they are more exciting to watch than you would imagine given the kind of music they have been outputting recently.
Not ever band needs to evolve and progress every album. This is a good album despite a lack of evolution, and doesn’t need to be anything more than it is

They should've named this album Rigby. I agree a bit with this review, the album felt like their first few. I wish they would switch things up a bit.
