    Tile layout, most important first step to installing a floor.When you install a ceramic , porcelain or marble tile on a floor, one of the first things that needs to be done is to determine how square a room is, which walls are parallel, which walls are square and which are out of square. The reason to do this is so you will get even and consistent cuts along a wall, and you don't end up with wedge type cuts that turn into slivers. From my experience, no room is ever built perfectly square, there is always at least one wall that is out of square and in older homes rooms are usually pretty far out of square. In this video I show how to layout and Square Off a big kitchen floor with lots of obstacles and corners and areas to consider. A laser square will be a huge help, and make it a lot easier to figure out what every single cut will be. Knowing how the walls are oriented to each other and doing proper tile layout will prevent unexpected unsightly wedge cuts. One of the worst mistakes that can be made is to assume that a wall is square to another, start with a full cut and then to find that the wall is out of square and you start to get an increasing distance between the wall and the tile and end up with small wedge tile cuts to fill the gap. Squaring off a room is an essential part of the tile layout process, as is measuring and knowing what every cut tile size will be before a single tile is set. You have to find where to but your very first tile, once you start setting tile, there is no changing of the layout and adjusting what the cuts will be.

    Just reference mocks. Haha. Love it. Man you have to do a follow-up to show the final product. That is truly elite planning. Folks don't realize the prep that goes in to the job. I'm usually stressed the whole time until I'm finished just because I don't want to run into a catastrophic issue. Never had any training, just your videos. I've done about 20 bathrooms and maybe ten floors so Im still green. Unfortunately you have to mess up to learn and when you mess up with tile it ain't no picknick haha. So yeah gonna up my game with the prep work. Love your videos man.
    PS. Do you have any recommendations for tiling ceilings in a shower. I know you've touched on it but didn't know if you had a video dedicated to that.

      I'm a Tile setter I've been a helper for 1.5yrs and can grout anything a good grout job can make a bad tile job look good and a bad grout job can make a good job look bad so I was taught very well and to mix hundreds of buckets of mud and mortar for natural stone I can
      Cut any radius cut or intricut doorjam cut with ease but the main thing that they never wanted to teach me was layouts they'd always do this fast and Id try my hardest to catch on but even being in the business now for over 2yrs & watching it done alot. I understand the intricacy of this part and how important it is to have a good layout but who were they really hurting ....smh...they shot themselves in the foot by holding a man back who desired to learn and make the company better which was really rediculous but I find alot of guys in construction are ridiculous becasue they usually don't wanna see others thrive or surpass them .I know they were trying to keep me from being their competitor but when you put in the time at 12.50$hr when you know the trade pays way more then that just to sacrifice & learn I had to just see the bigger picture and part ways with that company. I got my own books and been watching videos to learn myself but I wish I had someone who could explain it in a easy way because even me knowing what Saul is talking about Im having trouble with his lack of words becasue this and that or over here or over there isn't as clear to someone who is trying g to wrap their brain around this. But I think I learned Im going out to buy that laser level for my job on Monday 😆

    Today is my first tile install ever. After viewing lots of videos none had the content that this one had. I would ask my self if i was measuring correct or was i doing it wrong. I wanted to find my center point and then do little adjustments to connect and make one flush lay out thru out my living room, kitchen and hallway that comes around and connects with living room again. It was very tricky and was wondering if it was possible or do i just divide each with transition tile. This video shows just that and tells me that i wasent wrong all along. I guess since being a perfectionist I was thinking like a pro without the experience. Thanks Sal Diblasi for clearing this up

    Once upon a time when sheet vinyl was popular I would use a centerline to measure off the walls, then transfer to the 12' wide sheet goods .

    Compromises were typical.

We pured it over primed 1/2" plywood that is installed on 1 1/2 thick subfloors. Is it good idea to prime underlayment with Redgard to prevent cracking or we should lay Shuter membrane. Only we have a problem with thick floors, therefore; we are trying to avoid membrane if possible.

      @SalDiBlasi  5 лет назад +3

      For a pattern, just break it down to the smallest size tile and lay it out for that. So if you have a 36" plank tile going down on a 1/3r, do a layout for a 12" tile, if you have a pattern with multiple tile sizes, use the smallest size tile to figure your layout. Once you know the smallest cut of the smallest tile, any larger tile will be the be large than that cut depending on where it falls in the pattern and, the smallest cut of the largest tile will be the size of the smallest cut of the smallest tile.

      the floor is a 2-demensional surface, so he created an x-y axis. He transferred all the information "side to side" onto the x-axis and all the information "up and down" onto the y-axis. This way he could see how long or short his cuts would end up being all on 2 lines. Then, he could slide each axis one way or the other to change how the cuts would come out. That might not be a simpler way for you to understand it, haha, but it's different, so I thought maybe it would help.

      As far as the wall goes, if you are going to tile it, then you need to get it flat first. As far as square for the tile floor, really not much you can do, figure out the best layout for the tile and then go with it. The floor has to be corrected as well before you install tile, flat is required, level is desired.

    As much money as they’re putting into this tile floor, they should’ve ripped out all of the interior doors casein, and pantry shelves. Also put in the cabinets after tile floor. Cutting around all of the end panels on the cabinets must be a pain to do, right?

    • @ELTUK82
      @ELTUK82 5 лет назад

      Not really pal. A computer could possibly help you layout an average square room but even then,with the time it would take to input all your measurements it would be counterproductive. And then,as Sal showed in the video,when you need to tweek it and pull everything over by a quarter inch you’d have to go through all that again. So you can’t imagine the rigmarole of trying to measure and input a floor like this and then try to readjust it a few times with a computer.
      In my opinion there’s only five main tools when it comes to tile. Brain and tape for measurements and calculations. Hands and trowel. And your eyes. If you can’t use them then you’re doomed.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  5 лет назад +1

      @@treystills The value of the cabinets of the jobs I usually do are very expensive, usually several times the cost of the tile and installation of the tile. I prefer that the cabinets go in first so they are not dragging tools, cabinets, and everything that goes with it on my tile, potentially chipping and damaging it. The island and associate counter are very heavy and will deflect the floor when installed, better to have it in first. Since the cabinetry is very expensive, it is much more likely that the tile will be replaced before they are. I have also installed the tile first many times, usually when they are Inexpensive cabinets. Like I said, usually the way it is done here.

    It would help to hear that layout is ONE of the first steps, but not necessarily thee first step.
    I’m simply going off the title given this video.
    A tile contractor deciding if the area to be tiled can support tile is also extremely important.
    So, deciding who to hire is far more important.
    Contacting a certified tilesetter who is willing to be honest enough to tell you that the desired installation, in the way that you want it installed, …. is possibly NOT feasible to install is far more important.
    Sal is knowledgeable and I’ve shared several of his videos with my customers.
    The videos I’ve shared are the ones in which he speaks more clearly in.
    But, like many of us, he could improve upon his communication skills.
    Be honest. Sal seems to “wing it”, when trying to communicate a point.
    He might know what he wants to say.
    He struggles to communicate.
    Obviously, there’s a differentiation between the responsibility of the homeowner and the responsibility of the contractor.
    Who is Sal speaking to here?
    Who does he consider to be his audience? homeowners or contractors

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  3 года назад +1

      This of course assumes that the decision to install the tile has been already made, that the stability and suitability of the floor has been determined and that you have already installed your underlayment and are getting ready to install the tile. When choosing a title for the video, I have to consider more than what the title actually says, it is not just about the actual steps in the tile installation, but getting people to watch the video. When you come down to it, I am just a tile installer trying to help people get it done right, I have my limitations and am happy to take constructive criticism, there will always be people that know more and can do it better, however most of those people don't make YT videos and , some do, some do it better, some do it worse. It takes a lot of time effort and commitment to make videos, they don't always come out exactly as planned, some are better than others. I am just a tile guy, with a RUclips channel trying to help the industry improve. Sorry that I don't always meet your expectations.
