I used to use j-lube, but i find it really finnicky. I now prefer to use guar gum. With jlube you need to measure by weight and its easy to have too much. The jlube potency also degrades over time, causing you to have to adjust the amount. Guar gum works just as good and its much more forgiving with the measurments. You can use measuring spoons instead of a scale. Look up soap bubble fandom for both the guar and jlube recipies. Another tip is to try and avoid foam by splashing the water. Foam makes it harder to make huge bubbles. Happy bubbling!

My Grandson (age 8) recently asked if we could try making giant bubbles, and I found a very basic kit with a kid-sized rope wand and a packet of powder (probably Guar Gum) that you add to Dawn & water to make 1 gal of bubble solution . He had an absolute blast with that!
We love to DIY stuff, and he really wants to make *his own* solution. So after reading a bit about J Lube and Guar Gum as additives, we're trying Guar Gum first since its cheaper, easier to work with, and (reportedly) works just as well. I've also seen recipes that use glycerine, but I haven't looked into whether that serves the same purpose as Guar gum or J lube. Some say it makes the bubbles longer-lasting and more resistant to popping so they can be handled or manipulated?
The Guar Gum I ordered got here about 7PM last night, so you can probably guess what we're doing today. 😆

@@R2KBADefender Glycerine can work but its nowhere near as effective as guar/jlube. Check out that soap bubble fandom wiki page, it has TONS of info regarding soap concentrations, atmospheric conditions, ingredient measurements etc.
Also, a little pro tip, dissolve the guargum in rubbing alcohol (>70%, 99% is best) before adding it to the water. Add just enough alcohol so its watery and can be poured easily. It doesnt dissolve in water very well on its own and will clump up if you dont make a slurry first.
You can use the solution right away but it will get even better if you wait overnight for the polymer to hydrate in the water.

    • @FigmentVFX
      @FigmentVFX 6 месяцев назад +1

@@magicianword Let us know how it works out! I think that guar tends to foam up the solution a bit more and i think the bubbles are slighly heavier, causing them to sink to the ground a little bit faster. I dont think one is outright better than the other, i think they each excel in their own situations. I think guar might be slightly better when its less humid. (

A little tip: any of the powdered ingredients (Baking Powder ,jlube(Vetone from Amazon also an animal husbandry/polymer) or guar gum, will dissolve in isopropyl alcohol (Rubbing alcohol) without partially hydrating which leads to clumping. So if you mix your powders with the iso first and make what is called a “Slurry” then add that to your water the mix will combine without the “clump” factor. And this will make it so the mix is ready to use RIGHT NOW! And it will work even better tomorrow. I usually make 5 gallons at a time and regularly go thru that much in a day of bubble making. If you get the mix just right and have ideal conditions it can be a very magical experience. I’ve made bubbles that take approximately 4 seconds from when they start popping to when they finish popping. Now that is a looooooong bubble.
And then there are the ones that will just keep on going going going until they fly away. Still haven’t quite figured out what it is that makes those ones happen because it’s the same mix, but only certain random bubbles have the “Thing” if anybody knows what it is I’d love to hear about it,. Until then I’m going to keep working on the mix until I can make a bubble and get inside it and just float there and run in place inside the bubble. I’m thinking that it’s going to take a special combo of polymers and that long lost stash of “Original Dawn Soap” sitting on a shelf somewhere just gathering dust.

I made this up. I used about 3/4 of the original recipe and reserved the rest, undiluted, for maybe ten days. I went to use it today and there was sediment in the bottom. No surprise, but it was thick, gelatinous, stringy. I tried mixing it in but it did not want to mix in. I could possible have tried more vigorously but was afraid to. So I poured off the liquid and just used that. Is that to be expected? Should I have tried to mix it in?
The bubble stuff worked great. I had a great day for bubbles. It was a bit breezy but it was fun to see the air currents carry the bubbles up and away. The colors were really nice.

I've been making, & performing with, giant bubbles for about 7 years. I love them! I use JLube (there is another one called "Fist", but the site is definitely not veterinarian lol!!). I'm in UK, so no Dawn, instead Fairy Platinum. The formula has changed, but still works well. I add baking powder & a touch of guar gum. Just last week I experimented with adding a dash of liquid glycerine. Worked amazingly well.
I use telescopic fishing rods - light weight, & can collapse down for ease of transport.
Depending on conditions, I usually create bubbles approx 30 feet long. Biggest was 75 ft on the Scottish coast. People were walking & driving a mile to find out what they were!

So I had diluted my concentrate without waiting for your answer, to make it match other's receipe (and thus yours also). Just added 4 doses of water and 4 of dish soap to get back to the good receipe. In the end I'm getting 5 times the concentrate than I initially wanted to have, 1.25L instead of 250mL, but i've already used 100mL in no time, so the remaining shouldn't last long.
For a first try I must say it worked very nice.
Just not the best day today.the morning has been quite cloudy and almost no wind at all, afternoon should be a little rainy, and my audience (my 2 1/2yo niece) is not in great mood today. Definitely no enthousiasm at all today, whereas last week she was very excited, yelling "bubbles, bubbles" ... while the bubbles were definitely not as good as today's.
I hope better luck next time.

From the video "Physics secrets of giant soap bubbles", making bubbles is now ACADEMIC!
    1. 1/2 teaspoon of guar powder is mixed with 3 teaspoons of rubbing alcohol, mix until no clump
    2. combine the guar mixture with 2 pints of water and mix gently for 10 minutes (to hydrate the guar)
    3. add 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder (not baking soda!!!) and stir
    4. add 3 tablespoons of Dawn Professional Detergent, stir gently to avoid foaming
    5. enjoy gigantic bubbles
hope this is substitute for people who find J-lube/surgilube unavailable/unaffordable and have fun making your own bubble juice!

My bubbles keep breaking. I only saw Dawn soap that says 50% less scrubbing. The mixture has sate for a couple days and no difference. Weaker if anything else. I’m disappointed. Don’t know what I did wrong!

There could be a lot of factors, don't go too hard on the baking powder, 🤔 if it is super hot, try adding a little glycerine to the next batch. Wind is always a challenge outside, also really mix the ingredients well. Most likely really hard water, try distilled water from a jug next time, take it in stride, and get back up on that " bubble " horse! We all get a bad batch every once in a while. Happy bubbles 🫧

@@magicianword Thank you so much. I live on a golf course and have the grandkids here constantly. It has been so much fun making bubbles. I wonder if the ingredients break down. It seemed to be stronger when I did the first bubbles a couple days ago. Try try again! Thanks!

Yes, the concentrate is thick, but once it mixes with a gallon of water, it should be just right.
