I think by the end of the season, the offense gained will outweight the defense lost. Because although the Bucks had a great defense, they struggled to score outside of the greatness of Giannis and Khris Middleton shot making ability. That's why the Bucks got bounced last year in the 1st rnd. With Khris hurt and Giannis hurt, Jrue Holdiay couldn't score to save his life. Now with Dame and Malik Beasley they have 2 great options outside of Giannis and Khris

Playing Zone with weak perimeter defense but with good rim protector (Lopez and Giannis) and good help defender (Giannis) seems reasonable in theory. However, when it doesn't work empirically (in experimental trial and error), the empiricism should take priority over theory. One should change his theory about reality... instead of fixating on that the theory must be correct and keep running into walls in real life.

    • @nby333

      > "Theory should be considered over empiricism until there is a reasonable sample size"
This doesn't necessarily contradict what I said about "when it doesn't work empirically, the empiricism should take priority over theory."
However, the sample size requirement to overcome most theory, is pretty small because our theory about basketball is very oversimplified and uncertain. Bucks having bottom tier defense in 20 games, is way enough to say they better try to do other defensive scheme over zoon, regardless how good zoon feels in theory.
For complex systems like basketball, economy, human behaviors, the theories that we have are very uncertain and context-dependent. Theory like what kind of defense is good for what kind of team, can easily become invalid if for instance a new pick-and-roll variant is invented (like pick-and-pop from big man who now can shoot 3s), or if offensive style of the league is changing.
If a theory (which is uncertain and context-dependent in the first place) didn't seem to work well in 20 games, one should take the empirical result over theory of what seems good on paper.

I still think the Dame move was one they had to make. Jrue’s defense wasn’t there against Jimmy, and if their offense is also going to suck or be middling might as well go with Dame’s clutch ability. I think they could have stuck with Jrue and their depth if Middleton was more healthy and consistent. If he was still productive as he was during their championship run, they still need him but relying on him to be #2 wasn’t going to help them win again.
New coach and new point guard are definitely huge adjustments but I also think they also suffer from not having 6 great guys unlike Boston. Portis wasn’t going to start alongside Brook and Giannis. Malik should really be a role player. If you compare him to Derrick White the Bucks are lacking. Their top 6 compared to Boston doesn’t look as good. I just wanted to add that but new point guard and coach plus system are definitely bigger factors as to why the bucks look shaky.

Bucks defense will turn it around, watch. Jae Crowder, who is thier best wing defender has been hit most of the season. Once they get him back, the bucks will not have to rely so much on zone. They will he switchable 1-4 like they were under Bud. That leaves Brook as the lone man who will not switch, they will utilize that drop coverage and force either tough middys or contested layups. Bucks guards right now are just playing lazy, you need to chase your man off the 3pt line and into Giannis or Brook. They are allowing way too many uncontested 3s
