Hill Climb Fails and Black Diamond Trails? Suzuki DRZ400S and Yamaha WR250R Dual Sport Adventure

- Can you ride black diamond (aka "Most Difficult") rated trails on a street legal dual sport motorcycle like the Yamaha WR250R or Suzuki DRZ400S? On our last adventure exploring the forest and the OHV trails near Santiam OHV Area in Oregon, my buddy Ducfan decided it was time to find out. We love dual sport trail riding on our Suzuki DRZ400 and Yamaha WR250R and on this ride we not only rode to the top of a nearby mountain to check out the scenery and observe the smoke from one of the biggest Oregon wildfires in history, but we also decided to check out some of the black diamond "most difficult" rated trails in the OHV area. At first, Ducfan destroys a black diamond rated section of trail on his WR250R, but afterward things took more of a turn towards mediocre dual sport trail riding. Our off road motorcycle riding adventure met with a few hiccups including a sandy motorcycle hill climb fail and our ultimate decision to check out a longer black diamond trail, but not to ride it. Our enduro hill climb skills aren't amazing, and these dual sport bikes aren't exactly the best equipped for the most hardcore dirt bike riding areas, but we have a good time exploring and riding the ATV trails on our dual sport bikes.

That was so cool to watch you explore! I bought a Yamaha XT250 to do what you're doing and to generally get around. I live in my RV full-time and boondock a lot on forest roads. I don't tow a car and a bicycle can only get you so far (at least the way I ride - basically I don't lol). It was killing me to just sit there at my campsite so ... Yamaha to the rescue! Still learning to ride her but having a lot of fun.

Good stuff! I used to make offhand comments that involved rocks (i.e. “dumber than a box of rocks”, etc.). Now after riding single track for some time, I have the utmost respect for rocks! 😀

The sand and dust make that look difficult, especially on the uphills. Nice video!
The dust always makes it interesting because you can't see the obstacles on the trails sometimes. All part of the fun.

@@DorkintheRoad Me too! I lost my tent poles in the woods because they were strapped to the outside of my bags. Spent 2 hours retracing my steps to try and find them but no luck! Ended up finding shorter sectioned ones on Amazon that fit inside the GL Round the World bags (pro tip for ya there). Can't imagine how lost key might get!
Not much for music.. I like listening to the motor run.. but this music is kinda cool.
Yeah I'd leave the engine noise in but you can't really hear it well because I'm constantly talking to Ducfan and you can only hear my side of the conversation, so music seemed the better option.
I like one-sided conversations. It let's me guess the other half badly.
I just like the sound of the motors reving up to go up a hill or sound of the drz chugging.. Motor head kind if a guy.

Are any of these mountains off in the distance Mt Thielsen? How are those sandy sections after some rain?
Thielsen is a little too far south to see from there, unfortunately. I was back up there a couple weekends ago and the trails were wet. They were awesome. Video coming soon.

Three Fingered Jack looks pretty similar to Thielsen
Mt. Thielsen, aka “The Lightening Rod of the Cascades.” Is further south. Between Hwy 57 and Crater Lake.
