I love the idea of variants, but if there's a set of covers or a run along a certain theme, I'll usually go with that. For example, I have a complete run of Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers virgins of the A covers because I thought the trade dress messed with the art.
I've collected for like 30+ years at this point. As far as money value goes, keys are always going to be the best, you just happen to buy stuff at the peak of a bubble and are now experiencing the down turn. But any time the market as a whole rises, those keys will also. Variants are not able to say this and DO actually go down in price as well. If you went to any cons about 10 years ago, you could find long boxes labelled 'Variants' and they were just as cheap as the other long boxes (talking like $1 each.) And that's if they even had their own box, often they'd just be sprinkled in with the rest of the books. If the book itself is not significant, the variant will likely drop eventually unless it is just an extremely top notch desirable cover or some kind of niche like homage or specific artists, and even those will be hit or miss. With that said though... collect what you like. If you're in it for beautiful covers, variants are awesome. If you collect a specific book anyway, variants add to that collection. And if it is some kind of key book that also has variants, then yeah, that doubles the desirability. So mostly valid points here. :D Just not so sure about the value expectations you have for them in the long term.
Long term I think keys are a better investment in general whereas variants as a whole almost always go down. I like variants as much as the next guy but if we are talking investment, keys are less volatile. Now is the perfect time to buy keys $10-20 each time for 8 to 10 variants is the same amount that a minor key would be. There are countless examples of ratio variants tanking or store variants losing 90% of their value. I 100% agree that variants are awesome to look at. I snag 616 variants all the time and store exclusives. As the twobrotherscomics used to say "Collect your way." all the best to you. I enjoy your videos.
Good video Steve. I think too many people shit on other people that collect variants. I love key issues, most of my collection is keys (I don't collect many runs) but I also love variants. I feel it's a great way to get more art. Sometimes the variant cover looks better than the A cover. Lol. 👊🏼
