I started watching the China series at midnight and couldn't stop until 3am! I have been deeply depressed for maybe a year or so and tired of my life. I would never know you passed by my hometown Shanxi, where you were eating with Mr. Chen by the foot of Taihang Mountain, and you helped him unload the truck. People in my province are known for making businesses on coal, the materials you called for making steel. In the end, you said you wouldn't know if anyone will watch your videos. I'm telling you, your videos are now all over Chinese social media, like TikTok, Bilibili, etc. And beyond the hopeless life I'm living now, I'm grateful to see the humanity in the genuine advanture through your lense. Thank you for sharing your amazing experience in China and clearing the mist and rumours about China. I may as well understood life is more than what I'm enduring now.❤

And yes, it is unfortunate, I literally heard two white tourists the other day on the wall, outside one watchtower walking pass me and saying that the watchtower smells because Chinese like to pee in it, so I had to tell them the fact, that it was due to people illegally camp up there, and most of those who choose to do so are foreigners, which leads to the English sign that the local government had to put there.

He often talks to me like this in this kind of places so I recognize him in a second. He and I climbed some sections of the Great Wall that were open to the public and took photos of scenery(mainly the starry sky). Wow 20:00 The unrestored wall was like white snake crawling on the top of the mountain ridge. 20:11 the clouds were opening up just enough to see the Wall! How could the wall be built on such a narrow and sharp ridge! You really climbed up to very high to be able to see such a breathtaking view. Incredibly magnificent views! I wish the scene were slower and longer. This moment made the hike in the miserable rain, the unfortunate scene less view of the wall shrouded in mist the previous day and the scary and uncomfortable camping night all worth it. China is not an easy place to do what you did. Thank you deeply for taking such great effort to bring us to this beautiful moment!

I did the similar thing some twenty years ago when it was not so strictly prohibited. It was a winter and when we decided to go down from the watch tower darkness came way faster than we expected. We had to find our way back through the woods on one foot snow with a temperature 15 below Celsius. Things could go unimaginable had we not found the trail back.
Almost every year people lost lives on that part of the wall these years. Besides the wall was really not in the best condition to withstand climbers. Government started to tighten the rules to a total ban.
It's not exactly a crime to climb there but really we should all respect the heritage and play safe.

I have a similar story that’s was likely as scary. I traveled to a location at the bottom of Texas on the rio grande. My plan was to shoot the milky way over a certain mountain with the reflection off the river. 3am was when things lined up so there I was on the River that so many people cross to get into America and a huge blacked out diesel truck with no lights on pulls up 10ft from me. Now I have about $8k worth of camera I’m using that I’ve hiked in. This guy hops out and I can’t see anything but a dark figure as it’s so dark out. He walks up and before I could say a word, he jumps.. like he was startled which scared the shit out of me. Then, he said “holy shit, man! I didn’t see you right there!” And I said “holy shit, man! I thought you were a cartel guy coming to take my stuff and chop me up!” 😂 I still talk to that guy to this day after 7 years. He was out there looking to do the same thing I was lol. I guess my spot wasn’t that original.

Astrophotographers are a different kind of breed. They will travel for miles for perfect dark skies and an interesting foreground. All that for a single picture.
I know that because I'm one of them. Once you get out, you feel like the stars are calling you. You don't have a destination in mind, but once you see THE spot, you know that you have arrived. Then you just take it all in and start shooting. All in complete darkness with a red headlamp. Best feeling ever!

If you're still reading the comments I just want to tell you that there's just two words to describe your videos: Eye Opening.
I would have considered myself on the side of the political fence where I seriously thought China was an enemy, the government is oppressive to everybody and every day people, the people there must be rude and depressed because of an oppressive way of life.
Let me just say.. Seeing China through your lens, away from the tourist destinations where people are paid to be nice and tourist routes are mapped out, seeing real China and how genuinely friendly and helpful people have been is just gobsmacking to me because of what my opinion of China was before.
What a beautiful place with vibrant people. The episode on the Xinjiang province was the most interesting one because it is so contrary to the mainstream media, the streets were so vibrant. I just feel lied to by the media about China.. Totally not what I was expecting, well done, great adventures and what a genuine experience. Glad I watched it but I'm sad it's over now.

As a Chinese living in Spain, I can understand the ideas of most Western media, such as violence, lack of democracy, lack of freedom, and full of lies. I do not deny that the Communist Party's totalitarian rule does exist, but on the other hand, China's economy is better than most developing countries, with complete infrastructure and a high safety factor. Moreover, Chinese people are very enthusiastic, kind, and like to help. In fact, advantages and disadvantages coexist. I believe that most countries have this. It is neither as bad as portrayed by Western media nor as good as imagined. We should look at China with an equal eye, right? As a Chinese, I also welcome foreign tourists. Thank you.

This may be one of the most awesome travel videos ever. For you Mike it was nervewracking. For some of your audience it's culturally interesting. For me your high-res camera work opens a universe of information about the millenia-old stone construction topped by decades-old, much less durable, brick construction. Information about what can affordably be maintained. Curved decorative chiseling in the older stones. Crumbling mortar. Stacks of bricks from aborted restoration. Paths made by other curious hikers. You don't get to see how it is in a foreign land without work and some risk. Thank you.

I was a traveller for 30 years and the best experience I ever had, was standing on land where no human has ever lived, but there is no way of knowing exactly where. It was an aboriginal man from Western Australia, heard I was walking across Australia by the Nullarbor and he told me this..... when you are on that long road, stop, leave the road and walk north on that vast desert as long as you like... and somewhere on that sand no one has ever walked here. It did it every day, on my long walks until the Nullarbor was over and it was a magical experience. But, it took a lot of planning to do it. Your trip is a joy to see, taking on something unique. You did well mate. I lived in Beijing from 1996 to 2003 and visited the wall a few times. The touristy place is Baodaling where the wall is restored. where I went the most is SiMaTai where the wall is unrestored (well back then) and the scariest part is called The Eagles Nest. The floor on both sides of the Watchtower was broken and it was very steep, loose rock and pavers but the view from the watchtower was magnificent. From there you can walk to JinShanLing about 8km. You had to get off the wall in places cause it was so broken and farmers take some of the paving rocks for themselves. One day I was there I was with a Swedish guy and the temp was about 40 degrees Celcius but the architecture of the watchtowers is quite ingenious. Even on a 40 degree day they were cool and a breeze came through the slits even though you couldn't feel a breeze outside the towers. The other place on the wall I have been is at LaoLongTou (Old Dragon Head) which is the start of the wall on the Eastern end. The town is called ShanHaiGuan. Unfortunately it was foggy while I was there so zero views. They were great days out.

Part of it had been restored but part of it had not, and you moved from the restored to the unrestored part.
Mutianyu is akin to the "wild" experience for chinese, except it isn't since it has a cable car to get up and huge tourist area below it - although smaller than the other more popular parts of the wall.

Hey Mike, for your own safety, NEVER CLIMB THE GREAT WALL ON RAINY DAYS. NEVER. The wall is usually built on the top of the mountain, and you are the perfect attraction point of lightning when you stand on it. There are tourists dying on the wall almost every year because of lightning strikes. Moreover, the temperature on the mountain can drop very fast at night, and you may lose heat and freeze to death. This is no joking, some Japanese campers died because of the freezing temperature a few years ago.

That view! 🤩I live near the start of the Great Wall, and over the years, we've explored the lesser-known sections. These hidden parts often lead to random encounters-local painters, photographers, or a group of elderly locals who had foraged wild mushrooms and were cooking up a "hotpot" picnic 🤣Finding a truly "lonely place" in China is harder than you'd think. The signs warning people away are usually there because the wall is in disrepair, though small groups still come especially during winter to take photos on the snow-covered days. Also a sunrise for some on the Great Wall can be auspicious. I like to cycle through the mountains to the original villages built for the workers of the wall and then from these villages explore the paths up to sections where just locals go. Keep on exploring 👍🏻

Glad i stumbled upon this China series and account. I spent a lot of time teaching in Tianjin and traveling around when I was 21-23. I watched many friends get a head of me in life and some viewed my decisions as falling behind. It changed me for the better and China will always have my heart. Great series man, it brought me back. Though you might take the cake on these unique experiences lol..

I just last night happened upon your China travel. I haven't traveled very much during my 69 years therefore your trek has me captivated. It must be your personality that keeps you safe. You are a bit candid so you do make the old man chuckle occasionally. Thank you for sharing your travels. Peace, dC.fayette ga.usa

This year i visited the great wall for the first time with my wife, albiet in the tourist sections, and I'd peered beyond the barriers to see the raw wall and hoped I could walk down it as you did.
Lets just say those final scenes were bloody perfect. Thanks man, seriously.

As a Chinese, I must tell you that climbing the Wild Great Wall is very dangerous.
You may be attacked by wild beasts, struck by lightning, low temperatures, or fall. If something happens and there is no signal, nobody can help you.

It’s actually quite normal to hike in regions not open to public in rural Beijing, especially the Great Wall. A lot of hikers do this during weekends, as long as you don’t walk into military bases lol. But one need to be careful when hiking in the Great Wall sections that are not part of the scenery spots, it can be quite dangerous sometimes.

Gospel of Jesus Christ John 3:16 For God So loved the world that he gave his only Begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not Perish but have Everlasting Life. Jesus Christ Died for the sin of the World, If you believe in ur heart God risen Jesus from the dead and confess him with ur mouth to people you shall be saved. Jesus said I Am The only way to heaven there is no other way! Repent of urs sins (Repent means Change ur Mind turning away from sinful things and being truly sorry for it.) trust Jesus and give ur life to him He Loves you cares about you more than anyone ever will! we are saved By Grace Trough Faith!,this is sin: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of eternal life in our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23 For all have sined and felt short of the Glory of God. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Romans 1:18‭-‬21‭, ‬23 KJV Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9‭-‬10 REPENT OR YOU WILL PERISH REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL GET RIGHT WITH GOD LORD JESUS CHRIST.
