This is 100% live...no in-ear monitors, no after market auto-tune...Just pure magical artistry from "The Voice," Steve Perry. This is just a small part of the Journey Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour. Go check it out!
One of Journeys biggest hits. You'll also like Loving Touching Squeezing, Wheel in the Sky, and Any Way You Want It. Also check out Steve's solo work... Oh Sherry
I tried to grow mine out like his. But mine wasn't black. And it wasn't straight. But I got a decent John Bon Jovi lookin hair....minus the hairspray 😊
Fun fact: "In ear mics" didn't become a thing until the mis 80's... this performance was in 1981 on their Escape tour. No in ear mics or autotune. Just pure raw talent. Steve was and still is one of the best. Great reaction as always. Peace and light...✌💞
Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury - oh my gosh, those two sang so many of the songs I couldn't get enough of as a kid and still love them all these years later. RIP Freddie.
You have to remember why music like this was so great at this time. We had no internet. No Skype. No Facetime. No cell phones. You on the road touring, you had to get to landline or write down how you felt in a song.
Steve Perry's intonation was perfect and his singing effortless. He never showed the work in his vocals, and you never got worried thinking he might not hit "the note". The difference between artists back then versus now is that they had musicianship in the 70's and 80's. They weren't just "entertainers" following along with a click track. I hope he does Journey's Love'in, Touch'in, Squeeze'in next!
I love seeing peoples reactions when they hear Steve sing this song for the first time and the amazement. The control he has and how he projects his voice is fascinating to watch. Just bear in mind this is live, no lip syncing, auto tune or fancy effects - just pure raw talent. What an incredible vocalist. Great choice.
True story: I was living in Puerto Rico when this song came out. I was hanging out in my back yard with some neighbors, and Open Arms came on my Boom Box (remember those?). My 14 year old neighbor, Betsy, who did not understand a word of English, broke down crying from the song. Nobody uttered a word through the whole song, not even the little kids, they were mesmerized. I was already a huge Journey fan, so it was no big deal for me.
Great recollection, thank you for sharing. People of all backgrounds, cultures, and whatever else can all come together and enjoy music together. We need more ways to come together but great music is at least a start.
Felt this one would blow you away, Steve Perry is one of those rare voices that sounds as good as the controlled studio version, he's the GOAT! Thanks Black Pegasus 👍❤️🎤
As a die hard Journey fan I highly recommend "Wheel in the Sky" live performance 1980 Osaka Japan! Steves intro and interaction with the crowd is EPIC! It backs up his reputation as The Voice!
Same concert where you tagged to other songs. I still suggest watching "Mother, Father" from this same concert. Will blow your mind. Yes, this recording is live from November, 1981.
Agree...Mother Father live, same concert in Houston. The best. Want to hear one from the 90s, When You Love a Woman nominated for a Grammy. By the by he has this shirt in other colors.
That’s so cool that you know Professor of Rock! I went to high school w/ Adam & he used to give me a ride home before I got my drivers license! ❤😂 He drove an old 50’s car that was light blue & didn’t go over 45 mph!! He’s always known everything about music! Journeys is coming to our State Fair this August for a concert! I can’t wait!! ❤
He is the Voice, this summer Journey will be here in Philly with Def Leppard, we know prices are insane but Arnel isn’t a slacker, awesome voice for sure. But only one Steve Perry #1. BP as usual 3seconds in your face says it all 🤘🏻💯
No never anything wrong with vocal cords. It was his hip. Had hip pain for many years and then had a big operation. During that time they looked for a replacement.
I'd forgotten about that one. There are several songs I would love to see BP react to, given the birth of his daughter. I'd add that one to the list. The other two are George Strait - Love Without End, Amen; and Blue October - Home.
@@K9WATCHER .. Yes, I know, because they are from SF. When they refer to "when the lights go down" in the city and the sun shines on the bay, they are referring to when at sunset, all the lights that have been on in the high rise buildings of downtown SF and visible through the windows from a long ways away, giving it the city's beautiful skyline at night, are slowly going dimmer as the sun shines on the bay at sunrise. If you live here, you surely know what I'm talking about..
I fortunately got to see Journey back in the day and its a memory I'll never forget .im now 53. U cant replace Steve Perry...hence why ive never gone to a current Journey concert.
I saw Loverboy open for Journey at the Omni in Atlanta in 1980. It was SPECTACULAR!!!!! By far, the best concert I have been too. And yes, he is THE VOICE.
I don't know why the Open Arms video is dated 1982 because it is from the same 1981 concert in the Escape Tour (the one you reacted to Don't Stop Believing).
Journey's "Escape" album was released in July 1981, and the song "Open Arms" was also released on the soundtrack of the film "Heavy Metal" that month. The film was released in August. This concert video was filmed in November 1981 in Houston. The single and video for "Open Arms" was released in January 1982, 6 months after the album was released. "Open Arms" spent 18 weeks on the Hot 100. It debuted on 16 January 1982 and peaked at #2 on 27 February.
I saw Journey in concert & let me tell you it was freaking amazing! Steve Perry's voice is perfection, the way he holds those high notes gave me goosebumps/chills! 🎶I'd like to see some of the so called "talented artist" today to hold notes like this WITHOUT autotune!🤭 I'm so glad I got to see them live!🤩Hands down one of the BEST groups ever!😊😍I loved growing up in the 80's!❤
Oh my! One of my favorite songs. I had this on a 45 and I think I may have listened to it 45 HUNDRED times!! 😍 Takes me back to those school dances where the English teacher was the DJ at the juke box! Best times ever!
***WHEEL IN THE SKY*** Spiritual lyrics I know you will appreciate....ya have to do that one, and everything everybody said in comments. Journey is a journey....I'm here for it!
Journey is one of my Top 3 bands of all time. My brother got me into the 80s "Soft Rock", and along with REO, Chicago these bands remind me what my childhood is/was. It's like Homecoming for me. Thanks for the "journey" to my past.....

Mother, Father is a very strenuous song to sing and you can see his fatigue, but he blows it out of the park. You should check it out.
This song always takes back to dancing with my 8th grade school crush. She ran over TO ME to dance to this as she jumped into my "Open Arms". Dam had me on top of the world for that 3 minuets and the rest of the night. What a fond memory, thanks for the ride back in time.

Yep, one of my favorite albums still to this day is Journey’s Greatest Hits. BP, if you ever have some listening time and want to hear more Journey. Pick Journey’s Greatest Hits album and just listen to it in entirety. You wont be disappointed. There are easily 12 more songs that are instant bangers. From Stone in Love, Ask the Lonely and Separate Ways…those you’ve listened to are only a tip of the iceberg. Enjoy!
This will always be my favorite song by Journey. Sung beautifully and words are so meaningful to a lot of couples during that time. His voice was magnificent. Thank you for reacting to this.
This song released when I was a senior in high school. Been a Journey fan since then. Favorite all time song from them. Of course, I had a crush on Steve Perry too. LOL Definitely "the voice".
I had to stop watching this reaction. I'm so used to the way the studio version goes, and while I enjoy concerts and the energy and the arrangements of live versions, this one just fell flat. He literally flattened the melody, choosing to sing certain words using the same note, where the studio version varied. Those variations gave the song additional emotional impact, and this version is just unlistenable, by comparison. It's like a cover song from a band that doesn't really get, understand, or even like the original song.
I saw Journey several times, the most memorable being Day on The Green at the Oakland Colleseum. The Tubes, Ronnie Montrose, Toto. SANTANA AND JOURNEY! The best concert of my life.
I saw Journey 3 times back in high school. Man this song brings me back to the days . I will never forget this concert and this day in time . Thankful for these memories. Not going to lie Y’all this song brings the tears a bit. Steve Perry voice like no other !! 🥲

Tied with John Farnham I think
