hi gabe:) i am no professional groomer but i was forced to cut my doodles hair when her Petco appt was canceled on me lol. if i may suggest... please advise your subscribers to be careful when cutting around the mouth, go slowly around the lips, and also extra careful when cutting the long hair around the tips of the ears. You should make sure to touch the very end of the ear, give yourself room, use your finger as a barrier, check twice and then cut. thanks for all your great videos!
I’ll add my 2 cents as a pro groomer. 1. Don’t use a clipper without watching instructional video. Learn about coolant, and skin areas that are very vulnerable to getting caught in the blade. 2. Points of friction will get matted. 3. Ears, tongues, foot pads are loaded with blood vessels. They will bleed like a fountain. Never use scissors on the foot pads. Be extremely cautious around the ears and watch a head scissoring video to see how to safely trim around the muzzle. 3. I clip behind the ears with a ten or 7, to remove and prevent mats. I like to use a ten just beneath the ear opening and sometimes inside the ear flap if there is a lot of hair in there. This way we have a good airflow for the ear canal. You need to keep an eye on the hair inside the ears. Excessive hair blocks the ear canal and collects matter at the roots. It’s common for golden and doodles to get dirty ears. Ear wipes are a very easy method to clean the ears and prevent ear infection. 4. You can get a professional clipper. Use a ten blade for sanitary trim, eye corners and to remove hair around the bum and genitals. You can use a 30 place to trim between foot pads. Optimally you would learn how to clip then get a set of stainless guard combs. These click onto the 30 blade so you can set the length. Also if you use a guard comb you won’t blade burn. 5. Invest in a metro force commander blow dryer. You can use this to blow debris off after a hike check for ticks, blow the coat dry at the root. If you’re going to cut the coat it’s going to be rough without a proper prep and it won’t look even. It’s so important to get dander and stuff off of the skin. I can’t stress enough to watch the videos be patient it takes time to get the feel of the clippers and to learn the correct scissor holding.
@@clerniaz131 it’s very high risk due to the blood vessels in the pad. I’ve been grooming many years and I don’t do it. Dogs frequently don’t like their feet touched. One slight move happens fast. One cut will bleed like a fountain. I’m a professional and I don’t do it for safety reasons.
@@clerniaz131 the clippers will cut off the mats much faster, easier and safer, use a #10, I personally use #30, my dogs prefer the finer teeth edge of the #30 blade, a 40+yr top professional/show groomer uses those and recommends it, she never uses scissors to cut out mats between toes or pads. Please check YT Grande Style Dog Grooming for more information.
Exactly, dog grooming is so much more than just cutting fur/hair! Thank you for your concerns and explanations. And there is still much more, too much for just this simple video. I shudder when I see some videos of people showing how to groom some dogs!
Thanks so much for the quick, common sense grooming video! I like that you just explain the basics and don’t spend the whole video listening to yourself talk, like some longer videos I’ve seen.
New subscriber!! We just brought home 7 week old goldendoodle girls and I've been watching your videos in preparation. You explain things so well! We want to groom ourselves and this was super helpful, as are your other videos. THANK YOU for your content!!! Your doodles are adorable 🥰
I absolutely love all goldendoodle videos. Very insightful! My goldendoodle is a little over 2 years old and I didn't know how much work it actually pertains. I wanted him to have the teddy bear look but no matter how much I brushed he ended up so matted. I use the slicker and the comb every day, doing half his body one day then the other half the following day. ...no success. I had to take him to the groomer and they had to completely shave him. I take him now every couple months cause I don't ever want him to go through that again. After watching your videos I see my mistakes and learn a lot. THANK YOU!
Sadly, there is sooo much more than just the brushing and combing. Everytime your dog gets wet you MUST COMPLETELY brushout and check with comb after it is fully dry or it will mat that same night, also a dirty coat will not brush out. Sorry, but from what I have heard about doodles and highly respected groomers, the groomers say they are about the most difficult dogs to groom, on many levels. I wonder if your dogs breeder told you anything about, I hear/read that they hardly ever do and they don't even groom their own dogs. I read back, you let your dog get fully matted or even pelted. At least you learned your limitations, bravo to you!
I too much appreciate you and ur advice from this video. After watching this video I felt pretty confident about cutting my golden doodles hair. I did it &... She was afraid of the trimmers, tried and tried and got like half way then just caved in to finishing with the Scissors. But anyway all ur advice super helped and it was way easier and simpler than I thought it was. Turned it out to be a solid first cut... all thx to u!
Thanks so much for the video! I’m not a pro but the last groomer I paid didn’t check the heat of their blade and razor burned my dog’s sanitary area. I’ll never let another groomer touch him. I’ll do it myself. Tips from owners like you are great ❤
What brand of Dematting brush/comb do you use, where can I get one? Thank you for showing how to groom these beautiful Goldendoodles! This video has been very helpful for me!
My puppy is a rescue dog, so he has been neglected. I want to clean him up a bit before taking him to a groomer He has big patches where he is matted on the top of his head. How do I cut those areas? Any suggestions?
Gabe thank you for your amazing content, we have been obsessing over your channel! We are bringing home our 8 week old Goldendoodle boy this weekend and your videos have a blessing. Thanks from Rock Hill!
Hi Gabe! I have a 1 year old male Goldendoodle that has more of a retriever face where his hair on his head, snout and around his mouth is short. His coat is straight and wavy. Any suggestions on how to groom from the head back? His coat starts to lengthen at the front side of his ears back.
Awesome video I just wish I could get my bernedoodle to stand still whilst brushing him… he’s an f1 standard size and he’s 5 months old and is a real handful
I have watched your videos and have a few questions. My 1.5 year old f1b mini goldendoodle (35 pounds) is absolutely crazy. Inside my home he is loving and doesn't leave my side. He is food aggressive with my older dog but we have figured out a system for that. Outside of the house he lunges, shows his teeth, barks like crazy, and is out of control when any other dog is around. He has gone through extensive training and has had a 2 week board and train session. The trainer thinks he has severe anxiety and said to try cbd with him. Have you heard of a goldendoodle acting like this? Ideas? Suggestions?
Hey, yes I have. There are these types of dogs in every type of dog. The key is structure and showing him that you make the decisions and you lead him and he doesn’t lead you. You have to be confident in what you do if that makes sense and for example if you go to reach for the food and he gets aggressive, that’s exactly when you would apply “more” pressure which means you would safely remove the dog from the food and he has to understand that if he has that type of behavior he doesn’t get his food. Tried to explain that as well as possible and there’s so much more I could say but hard to type it all. I would watch “Tom Davis” on youtube he has amazing tips on this type of thing
I love your dogs. They are just the right size. And that e-collar I have never seen one of those. It’s been a few year since I had a dog.your doodles are precious. I’ve often wondered are doodles real expensive. What are your prices?
Thanks for the video. New subscriber as well. Currently in the research phase and looking for a goldendoodle. Considered Honey Mountain kennels but you're a bit far from DC area.
Your pups are super cute! I have one myself and wanted to get your opinion on getting them registered? I know they can’t be akc but what about the doodle association? I’m on the fence about getting mine. He’s 9 months- male and eventually due to breeders (he was their pick- then given to me) will be stud out.
Omgoodness is that golden on doggie downers during this? my golden doodle would be throwing a major temper tantrum with that grooming. I’ve tried conditioning her to the brush and comb but to no avail. This is a great instructional tho! Thanks.
What brand of clippers do you use? My sister can’t care for her doodle anymore so we will be taking him in and I want to make sure to get clippers that would work for him!
I live in asheville, and im picking up my new puppy tommorrow, its an F1BB goldendoodle, i am so excited and nervous to make sure I give the new member of my family the best care he needs. When brushing, if they have tangles, does it hurt them to be a bit tough to get the tangles out? also, what should i tell the groomer i want for haircut to keep coat with the teddy bear look? ( as long as i maintain the coat of course.)
I suggest watching some professional groomers here on YT, they will explain the tools, how to use them, why some tools won't work, maintenance, ear cleaning, dental care, etc. No wonder groomers have to correct home grooming or hate grooming doodles or won't. Go Groomer or Grooming by Rudy will start you off better with grooming doodles, Transgroom TV or Dog Grooming Tips and Tricks are 2 other world class groomers YT channels that will help you too.
The hair has to be tangle and mat free, be able to be combed completely to the skin before using a clipper. 1st rule of clipping, if not, it might be dull blades, packed in clippers, wrong number clipper blade, etc. A prof groomer will tell you the same thing.
After watching your videos I felt ready to get a doodle of my own! How do you keep them from constantly getting wet from the grass when going out to potty 😫 My puppy is so stinky lol and I've only had him a week. The dog cologne I have doesn't help his smell, any recommendations?
I blame the breeders first for not informing that doodles are high maintenance and high energy dogs, remember they are 50% poodles, everyone should stop and think sometimes🤦♀️
You can’t really just grab the ear and begin cutting. You have to protect the leather by keeping that ears edge in your hand so you can’t cut it without cutting yourself . I know of a dog whose owner cut off his peeper with shears. Leave that to the professionals! Poor guy had to squat for the rest of his life.😬🤭😑there’s ALOT to grooming. May I ask why a professional groomer won’t groom her own pet?
