That intro is incredible. Matt completely sells pretending to be someone who was once sane. A+, would gif.
He's a DM. He WAS sane...once.
I cannot stop laughing at his delivery. It's like the dude was so insane he had to think about the fact he was a slave and insane.
Echk! eech echk! thousand times. horatio unilitility. Eternity, but in the wink of the now. 10.
@@Nagazongas lol nice. Very Waking Life.

Let us put those out for you.
Love the show keep it up!
Why is Matt slowly looking like a werewolf ?
@@Lastburn Matt morphs .. it's no big deal. I think he would enjoy a hoverboard more than an hirsute proposition. hehe
@@Lastburn He's half Bugbear.
This surprised a laugh outta me!

Matt: " ...now it's gnawing on you."
Tom: "Gnawed again!"
"easter is cancelled" got an hearty chuckle from me :)
This episode had quite a few witty moments. Much enjoyed!
Tom and Lars communicating in Prequel memes gives me life.
Happy to see OD back! Pull up an extra chair!
Is O'DnD still a thing that's gonna happen? Some kind of separate recording for that campaign? I thought they were recording like that as well, or am I sadly misinformed?
Completely agree. I would love to see him as a permanent cast member. His lack of knowledge but his eagerness to learn is incredibly endearing.
@@simoncroft73 not only that, but he does seem to learn quickly, i have been pleasantly surprised
@@RPanda3S I feel like Matt said that the audio was bad so it wasn't getting pushed out, but I might be wrong.
I would like to put forth the concept that OD is pronounced "Oh.Dee" and not "Odie" Thank You. =)

"Everything can't kill us."
"It's the one that can you've got to worry about."
Underrated exchange.
"I couldn't sit and watch this, I'd go crazy."
Meanwhile, I'm over here binging the whole damn series from start to finish.
31:15 yes, you can have reactions on your own turn. You can make it all the time with college of swords bards with the movement flourish. Also for readied spells you have to roll concentration saves or you lose the spell slot
It's ok, Matt. None of your players appreciated your ten tackles pun, but I did. It was great! 😂
“This time you’ll be able to breathe”
“Thank you sir”
😂 OD plays the sarcy obsequiousness so well
Who wants to see Leech get promoted to a senior member of The Chain and have Matt continue on as apart of the main cast?
I really hope they do that, but I reckon he'll at least be a reoccurring guest.
*enthusiastically raises hand*
*laughs from the future*
The future is in the past! Onwards, Ayoshima!
If you want a "cast" go watch Critical Role. This is real D&D.
1:43:18 I LOVE that boot. Look at the knife hidden in the heel, perfect for what Töm described in the last battle! Man. I love when a lack of a plan comes together.
I love the glance at his notes in the intro. He's absolutely convinced that he prefers chaos and madness, but he doesn't remember what they're called until he reads the note.
Glad to see Phil back for this one. He has quickly become my favorite player.
"Annatated" idk why but I can't stop laughing at this.
I will admit when I first saw OD I was thrown off alittle. Not cause he didn't know D&D but his mannerisms were not expected. Now though I've grown to like him and can't wait to see more of him. You could say I've become attached to the leech.
Honestly, same!
Well punned.
Love a cockney bastard 🤣
BLESSED BE SHEOGORATH, LET THERE BE NO PANTS LEST THE SHEEP LIE WITHIN THE SEA!
You're practically exploding with madness! You're amazing! Bursting at the seams! *gasps* Seamless!
That’s so epic. Judge gets teleported away and spends the whole fight running back only to run up, cast hex, and then crit with his great sword for the killing blow.
(Gets grappled, starts being gnawed on by monster)
Lars: Aw sh*t, here we go again.
28:15 I mean the
eal\ players' handbook
Perfection.
I hope Matt becomes a regular player. I love the way he plays Leech and he keeps it light and fun.
Would love to see OD become a regular player in the Chain. He fits in so naturally... and adds some levity and laughter that I think is great to see, as a viewer.
That cursed die exchange was pretty great. I've been playing online for a while and I miss table interactions like that.
I keep constantly forgetting that this show happens on wednesdays so whenever I see this on youtube I get really excited like :'' Oh shit there's new episode of the chain!''
10:20 "Please excuse the crudity of this model. I didn't have time to build it to scale or paint it."
Why do I get the feeling that Leech drop kicks Od into the air to go scouting the island
I'm stealing this for an NPC wizard.
I've got gamers who would've still cast the Fireball, then prayed somebody could heal them.
Wayne Davis he’s the cleric so that’d be funny
@@Hazel-xl8in Wasn't even thinking about that when I wrote it. Would kinda fit in with some of the jams they've gotten themselves into....
Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it !
Lars smiled!
Jon P an ancient prophecy foretold that every time Lars smiles, world is a betterplace. Even if only for a fraction of a second.
Lord of madness? Inverted tower? I recognize the, "Annihilation" references and I appreciate them
Love the Cole Porter reference! Seriously love the show guys, only wish I could be with you live more often.
Left Tom's hair is glorious.
Love the show!
Just wanted to say there is no opportunity attack for making a ranged attack in melee, just disadvantage.
the dmg says “Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does.” (pg 136)
Good thing it was Odie tasting... He probably wouldn't tell anyway.
Mr Silver well it wouldn’t matter, a small taste is generally defined as not enough to reduce the amount of “servings” in the bottle, but it is enough to know what it tasted like. any single one of them could’ve tasted it and known what potion it was.
@@Hazel-xl8in I think you missed my point. The way it worked out maintains ludo-narrative cohesion, because in the face of that rule, Matt could easily say, "Odie knew what the potion was, but didn't tell you because he hates you."
Mr Silver well yeah of course, but i’m saying the players were too cautious with their testing of it, by RAW they could’ve known exactly what the potions did at no danger of wasting their resources
@@Hazel-xl8in Right. And then I added to your statement by contextualizing that rule by the narrative. Then you said your statement again while implying it negated my addition. Then I said that I was making a different point than the one you seemed to be contradicting... Anyway. I will say that I disagree that the players were being too cautious, because that rule wasn't in-play at the moment.
1:08:35 a gith would describe that sword as “ having seen a great many battles”
Oh yeah, the giant fireball thing, probably because it was based on Chainmail's fireball spell. which was *heavy battlefield magic for killing multiple units of troops*
That intro tho. I want to be like Matt when I grow up.
That intro, i cant. So great.
A goblin with a bone bow just sounds right to me.
I love watching in 1.25x it’s like a brain exercise whenever Matt talks. 1.5x is even more intense. Also... Yay! New episode.
I am watching at 1.75x for the last several episodes. It takes me three days to watch, otherwise.
Anna is so perceptive! "They know he has allies, because crown of madness makes him attack other people".
Anna@2:15:29: Is that yours?
Matt: ...
Matt: Anyway. It's *A* monster manual.
As a note, farie fire negates invisibility, meaning they get no benefit from it
They said that, but I think they were confused by the "if they can see them" language. After reflection, it seems clear that it means something more like, "as long as the attacker is not blind"
I have always interpreted it as the creature/person is still invisible but the pink/purple farie fire like encircles them just like in Matt's game so technically they are still concentrating on Invis but they get no mechanical benefit from it, because if they leave the area of effect, they still have invisibility
@@danieldosso2455
The AoE of Faerie Fire only matters when it is first cast. Creatures moving out of the original AoE are still outlined and creatures moving in do not become outlined.
@@nickwilliams8302 oh? Well then it appears I'm wrong then. Thank you for clarifying
Question for the DM. During the sandbox episode you mentioned that you run a selection of 3-5 different modules that are going at the same time (to grossly oversimplify).
Is there any decisions that players have made that have irrevocably changed the course of your world?
Like has anyone ever defeated Ajax? If the chain defeats Ajax would the world move on to something worse in your next campaign, or would you just have another chance for the players to defeat him?
Colville goes for a sense of continuity between campaigns, rather than strict continuity, I think. It's less important that players have a lasting effect on your conception of your game world than that they FEEL they have had a lasting effect.
Breakdown try looking on the Matt Colville subreddit. He answers LOADS of questions like this
Again, another great episode! Thank you all!
I was wondering, is there no more of the comfy bg music?
Aramil I recognized your name from your soundtrack work! You have a great Skyrim track.
Can I say I think it's awesome that you gave humans actual racial abilities. Cause I like that. Does give me a few different theories maybe humans are less inherently magical so they can sense when such shenanigans are afoot. Maybe it has something to do with it being an "Age of Men" , maybe something to do with why they have many gods as opposed to one? It's got me really intrigued. Maybe someone should try to find out? HINT HINT
It is interesting. Though I see the ability to have a feat at first level as an excellent racial trait
Here here
@@tennesseeponderer3146 That's a variant human though.
In my setting, humans are inherently magical as the "first race" and other races were crafted from their template. This gives humans an excuse to be extra magical and yet plain at the same time.
@@RPanda3S That's typically what I do. With the exception being beast races which are typically the long term result of Awakened beasts. I don't typically run humans as more magical though, it's just that the other races (Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Ect) are typically biological offshoots mutated by means both supernatural and mundane. (Typically a bit of both) However, I don't have what you might call Generic Humans. What I do instead is create human ethnic groups which act as sub races granting specific attribute bonus's and features based on their culture rather than biology. Examples include a race based on the ancient Irish with eidetic memory and a berserk feature alongside a bonus to STR and Wis. A Race based on the Vikings with STR and DEX bonus's with a natural disposition for combat (Not as likely to flee, or be taken by surprised) and a penchant for sailing. That sort of stuff.
And the other way in? Send 'em round the back? - Ok this had me in stitches.
Ah yeah boi heroforge minis for the win! Phil once again shows incredible taste!
Wait, THERE IS A TIME BANDITS SERIES DIRECTED BY TAIKA WAITITI IN THE WORKS? HOLY SHIT, YES!!!
Phil reminds me vaguely of someone that I used to work with. Similar voice and mannerisms. Great fun.
1:31:15 is when i realized that Phil thinks of Tom's character as the foppish swordsman from Rob Roy
Foots
Matt's a dungeon MASTER!
6:16 Coming soon to MTV: "Breaking Drow"
This will likely go unread- but the group seems to handle invisibility wrong. An invisible creature is not the same as a hidden creature. The characters still know where an invisible character is unless the creature takes the hide action after going invisible. And we can assume this didn't happen, given the readied action the creature took against king. Also a readied action can only be one attack, it would seem that matt applied the creatures multi attack to the readied attack. Also a reaction happens as soon as the trigger happens, so when king readied his spell - it could have gone off on his turn as well.
oh cool more MCDM I love this campaign it is like a drama ~B#
Man I wish OD just stays as a permanent or at least recurrent player, he did great.
OD fuckin loved that free mice joke lol
This has probably already been mentioned or suggested (or demanded!) but I feel like there should be a Kickstarter for a Chain of Acheron Tarot deck. Soon. Or now.
+! Maybe for the next book's stretch goals.
A d7 actually exists though, any many other weird dice. I think DCC uses them.
This is so enjoyable to watch.
I love the intro, it's the best one I've seen. I love this campaign.
I am now incredibly curious as to why humans can always sense magic in this setting.....
I suspect that when Matt created the setting, it was an earlier edition where Humans were suckier.
Non-variant humans are not that good most of the time, and seeing as Matt doesn't use feats they have to use the original version, so it could also be because they sucked in 5e.
Keep OD in the party please!!!
"I residents of The Isle of Madness prefer it when you call it The Isle-of-I-Just-Forgot-My-Medication... that's not funny."
You're absolutely right, Matt. That's not funny, it's hilarious.
18:25 in Matt’s window needs to be made into a gif
I Hope they keep O'D on as a player he is engaged asks good questions and is a perfect fit for the party. Now if we can just Get Matt to stop blowing on the dice this would be a flawless campaign
Come for the Matt Intro, stay for the Töm Intro.
Watching Matt watch O.D. is great.
@1:31:52 is Matt sniffing his marker? Lol
I've noticed that he does this occasionally
Love odriscoll
i loved the intro
Matt is ME , smelling markers!! 😂
Keep OD
I smell "heavy" references to H.P. Lovecraft. Looks at book, thinks about name of island, looks at book.
25 minute mark, nobody caught Phil's reference. I got it, Phil, I got it.
I loved this episode
Damn, the Cole Porter reference nearly slipped by, Judge caught it though.
Love OD lol I miss him when he's gone

Perception or investigation to see where the bones land / fall if they connect with something. I've had my players do what with blood pools on the ground. I figured it was one of the two, and gave them the option to see if they watched well enough where this blood landed to splash against something. They where in the middle of combat so the DC wise higher then normal. The ranger for a nat 20, and well is a ranger.... a normal ability they just so happened to have..... pumped rather high because they multi classed into rogue..didn't expect that battle to go so easy...
I made mine a little more complicated, player has to use one of their attacks to hit up dust/gravel. Atk roll Vs creature's AC+cover.
The dust covered a 15ft cone, if the creature is out of the cone - full cover
On the edge of the cone - ³/4 cover
If he's completely on target - ¹/2 cover.
That player then knows the location on this turn, every other player with LoS makes a perception check Vs a Dex save DC the ones that beat the DC also see where it is for their attack. (Perception Vs Dex save representing the creature being aware it's location is given away and trying to shift before the rest of the party launch their attacks).
Is Lars referencing The Wheel of Time at 2:37:20? The Chosen One does sound like a human wizard missing an arm that's far into madness
If there is a tide on the surface, and this sea is literally just underground, not on a different plane, then there will unquestionably be a tide. And if the temp is a constant then rocks will not be expanding or contracting.
1:51:15 Damn. Dark. 346 preventable deaths reduced to a 2 second punch line.
Fishing for Kua-toa using a Leech....lol!!!
1:15:39 wizards, clerics, druids, bards and the unearthed arcana artificer
The world Drow come from the Elven word meaning traitor so is leech a traitor of traitors ?
Gods, that title card.
Can so see this!a skull island with skeletons pour out like ants
Don't forget you have the fishman's man-catcher.
I think music would be great for the atmosphere of the game especially in combat
The Lord of "I just get these headaches..."
2:56:09 I'm that kid, well teen who watches the show
I love how the party consists of only two humans, and the rest are "monsters". I wonder what Boots and King think of the fact that they are the only humans in the group (the main group, not counting the retainers or rank and file), and are surrounded by creatures that are normally seen as evil, manipulative, and backstabbing.
It seems to me that once you're in the chain, you're a chain member first and everything else second.
Damn as someone who plays a Pact of the Chain master Warlock with an Imp I have a hard time with them not reading the creature when they use it. Fire Immunity is in at the end at least, Resistance to al ot of damage types should be taken into account as well. But otherwise an enjoyable episode ^^
Someday i will have an npc deliver that same intro.
