Fluidmaster Toilet Seal - Install and Review

- In this video, Fluidmaster Toilet Seal - Install and Review, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich and Dave's son, Caleb show you an interesting product that can make replacing a toilet much easier than it used to be in the old days when wax rings were the only option.
The problem with wax rings is that they are sticky and messy! Plus they are brown, why did they make them that color???
In addition, once a wax ring is set in place, you can't move the toilet at all, or you will break the wax ring seal and you will then have to scrape that off, get a new wax ring and start all over.
This Fluidmaster Toilet Seal is amazing. It works with a compression fitting. Just scrape off the old wax using a flathead screwdriver or other tool, put the new toilet seal in place and the weight of the toilet will cause the seal!
The really cool thing is that if you don't like the position of the toilet, you can move it around as much as you want and it will reseal.

Thank you very much for your Fluidmaster Toilet Seal - Install and Review!!!
Hey tse…,
Glad it was helpful! Thx for watching!
Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for and you are using the same toilet that I just picked out to use.
Hey Bill,
Perfect. Thx for watching.
We just watched your video to install one thanks for your help it's simple and straightforward
Hey Jennifer,
Thx for watching!
A great product I see. I have a leaky ring. So I must replace it. Seeing this product. I of course grabbed it. The idea of a rubber seal there makes all the more sense in the world. Your video was a great help thank you. We need to stop using candles where rubber is needed.
Hey Gym,
Well said ! ( stop using candles )
Glad it helped. Happy projecting !
This really helped! :) thanks for the how to!
Purchased one yesterday, and as soon as I can grout the tile and it sets I will give your instructions a try. Thank you.
Hey Connie,
Nice project! Thx for watching!
great way to show how to replace a toilet thanks for the help
Hi K Simpson, glad it was helpful, good luck with your toilet replacements!
Good job on this video. Covered some simple yet important stuff that others failed to cover. Thumbs up my man.
Much appreciated! Thx for watching!
Thank You so much for showing me how to use the no wax ring. I have installed one toilet in my home and I am fixing to install another one in the main bath. I used wax for first one but this time I will be using the no wax ring. So much cleaner and nicer than the wax one. Thank You again, you helped me out a lot!
Hey Nina,
Great to hear! Good job and thanks for watching!
I'm with ya. I installed a toilet awhile back and the wax was a PITA. Not knowing of this, I was thinking "there has to be a better way." Well, that better way is here.
I used the better than wax and I loved it. Less mess and easier to install and reposition it. Thank you!
Hey Vanessa,
Much agreed! Thx for watching!
Especially important when installing on an uneven tile floor. Fluidmaster worked great for me!
I bought one today 23 December for a toilet install. Thanks. This helps a lot.
Hey aVitginia…,
Awesome! Thx for watching!!
Excellent video 👍
Thanks much!
Awesome! Enjoyed the video.
Hey James,
Thx for watching!
Did a good job. Zoomedon to show flange, bolts being put in place, then washer , then seal.
Very organized in explaining.
Hey Man…,
Thx for the comment and for watching!
I had a yucky wax ring go bad and had water everywhere! I mentioned this to my 22 year old Son and he magically disappeared! So my very best friend and I took the task upon ourselves! Men? What men?? We cleaned up the old wax and cleaned up the mess around the flange and installed this product without the spacer and NO LEAKS!! That's GIRL POWER!! Thank you for your video!❤️
Hey Amy,
Way to go! Yes - those wax rings look gross but a putty knife makes quick work of them.
Now that you know how to do that, with your new skills and confidence, watch - your son will be calling you someday to fix HIS toilet! Just make sure he treats you to dinner or something after! 😃
Thx for watching!
@@Housebarons I felt so proud of myself and I showed my Son what we did and he was proud of us and if I don't mind saying myself I think it looks awesome I should have done a before and after pictures but maybe next time!!😊
Thanks for that nice presentation for installing a "Fluid master Better Than Wax" product. I hope to be successful with that product. Thanks again.
Lionel Duarte.
We just used this for the first time today and it was so simple and went without an issue. I love fluidmaster products, always quality made.

That’s our experience as well. Thx for letting us know and thanks for watching.
@@Housebarons..how has this held up? Any leaking from any toilets?
Never an issue…
Thanks, great video
Hey Melanie...,
Thx for letting us know!
Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for! I've put off replacing 2 separate wax seals on our toilet because I knew it was a one and done placement and if I screwed it up, I would have to be buying more seal. So glad to know we can reposition the toilets!
Hey Pink…,
Can’t agree more - exactly why we use those non-wax seals. We’ve done a number of toilets with no issues!
Thx for watching
@@Housebarons I joined a FB group for asking plumbers questions about if I can just replace the flange so I don't have to mess around with removing the wax. Unfortunately I've had 7 people say to stay away from this seal. Apparently they are prone to leaks and can be easily destroyed if the toilet ever has to be snaked. I'm going to have to pay someone to do it for me.
Good video, the Better Than Wax seals are great I just used one. Thanks.
Hey Bill,
Much agreed! Thx for watching!
Good job

Thanks for letting us know! Glad it worked for you and thx for watching.

Thank you so much for bringing easy solution for frustrating problem: toilet leaks
Thx for watching!
LOL - I just went through 3 wax rings trying to position the toilet correctly and now it leaks worse than ever! If only I had watched this video before starting the job! Thanks guys!
Hey Peter,
Thanks. So happy to leave the wax rings forever!
I agree! I wish the ring was a different color. I guess it would be more expensive but...
Thanks for posting. I was gonna replace the wax ring but the plumber at lowes said these are better.
Hey Pork…,
Agreed. Thx for watching!
Thank U i am going to try it.
Hey Curtis,
Great! Thx for watching!
Thanks. When I searched didn't even know you were installing a Cimarron, I may be putting in that model for a relative. Supposedly the toilet comes with a wax ring but I think based on your vid I will pick up one of those Fluidmaster seals. They say there is a 10-year warranty. Nice thing is, before you pull the toilet you don't know the flange level so this saves you from buying extra rings or running back to the store.
Hey Frank,
So true. Good points!
Thx for watching.
I just installed the rubber fluid master and I've messed up a few wax rings before, so it makes me wonder why anyone would still use a wax ring?! You don't have to get it right the first time, because you can reposition it. Best improvement product ever!
It's great if it's not leaking 10 yrs down the road. If it does, I won't be using one again. I've installed many toilets, all using wax rings, and never had an issue with any of them, until now. One I installed 10 yrs ago in my home, just started leaking.

Hope it goes well! Thx for watching!
I bought one of these to replace a wax ring but it says to clean all the wax off first. From looking at your video you cleaned off most of the wax but didn't make it 100% clean which is what I thought had to be done so you just made my life much easier.
Hey Robert,
I think it’s about common sense. I don’t think it should be an issue - we haven’t had any issue at least.

Hey James..,
Glad it helped. Thx for watching!
Thanks for the the video on this. I just picked one up the other day because I'm remodeling a bathroom and there is a heating vent to the right of the toilet. I started thinking.... heat and wax in the same vicinity aren't a good mix, so the fluidmaster seem like a better choice.
Hey Vincent,
Hope it works out well for you. Thx for watching!
3:45 It's less about dropping something down the drain. It's more about the entire house smelling like raw sewage and not being able to breathe.
Hi Thomas, yes, sewer gas is brutal. We were working this week on a house that had the sewer line sheared away from the house. Not very pleasant. These toilet seals do a great job to seal the sewer line. Thanks for your comment!
It's both.
With wax rings it is a good idea to sit on the bowl and do a rolling motion with your weight before you tighten bolts. It helps seat the toilet firmer than just tightening bolts. Keeps bolts from coming loose after you use the toilet several times.
Solid instruction and review! Thanks very much for making this video. I recently had to replace the flange gasket on my toilet and it went completely sideways. For anyone that has used wax gaskets, they know that this guy is SPOT ON with his comments about how they are a “one shot deal”. They do not allow for even the slightest adjustment, and your hard work and cash can be tossed into the toilet super fast if things don’t go perfectly.
Hey Adam,
Thx for watching!
Wax rings suck! I'm guessing they will be a thing of the past once these catch on with plumbers.

130$ a hour!!! Wow!!!! The wax seal broke on my toilet and my uncle gave me this to fix it. Its a really old toilet and i just want to make shure i do it right!!! Thanks for the post!!
Wow I wasted my time in college getting an engineering degree! Never got close to $130 per hour. I need to take up a new trade.
Due to taxes it should be unless you are making over $160 per hour. But also is a really good to feel like you are a little competent in these areas and that's priceless.
The ending though 🚽
I just used one of these today. My setup was a bit different. My flange was just barely over finished floor, but the seal alone was too low. So, I had take off the thin foam gasket from the seal and put just the thicker foam gasket from the spacer on the seal. I guess you could say I had "tweener", but it worked perfect though.
Wow! Sooo much better than wax. About time too, since setting a toilet has been the same forever and seriously, wax seals suck!
Good video Bud!
Hey Mister,
True! True! Thx for watching!
I had the same issue, but just used the seal as is. If I have problems I'll use your method. Thanks.
Same issue with me. Debating on whether to use the spacer or not. Might just put the toilet on both ways and see what fits better. That’s the advantage of not using wax. Can try over and over again.
I had to do the same thing with mine a year or so ago. It too was a tweener. Works fine as far as I can tell.
Omg thank u my man life saver
Hey Marty,
Glad to hear it! Thx for watching.
it was really good video
Hey Lokorenegade,
Thank you. And thx for watching!
Thx for the video I always wondered if those non wax rings were any good , and from what I can see this clearly seams to be the better option , but I wonder about the longevity of it seams like would last longer than a wax ring what are your thoughts on this or what have you seen since installing this type of ring.
Hey Leon.
Agreed. Wax rings seem to have potential flaws.
Feeling the plastic / rubber material of the non-wax ring would lead me to believe it will stay soft. And it’s shape seems to me to be leak proof. I had some extra wax rings laying around a while and I threw them in the trash yesterday. No looking back.
Replaced the "new" Gerber toilet in the main batheroom that the previous owner had installed when they renovated a couple years ago (it was terrible, constantly clogged, had no flush power at all) with an American Standard Champion 4 and low and behold they used one of these! I was so happy when I saw that I wasn't going to have to clean up that atrocious wax mess and it made it so much quicker. Love these things and recommend everyone use one because even if it does leak eventually replacing it takes 1/10th the time of having to replace a wax seal.
*A quick note: If you have a flange that sits more than 1/4" below your floor you will need 2 of these kits because you will need 2 spacers. If you do not know the depth of your flange before hand definitely buy two of these. Much better to have to return an unused seal than to be stuck with no toilet while you rush to find another one!
Hi PsychoCPU, we have been very pleased with the Fluidmaster Toilet Seals. The flange spacers are sold in most hardware stores as stand alone parts, so you won't have to buy 2 complete kits. They have different sizes. You might have to purchase a couple of them to get the proper fit. Thanks much for your comments!
I had some plumbers say they hate Fluid master toilet rings. I do a lot my own plumbing work, because I was plumber Engineer in the military. I really like them. You always take the toilet back off.
Hi martinmercerjr8615, absolutely agree with you! If you can take the toilet back off easily, why mess with a wax ring? Thanks so much for your comment!
I tried a Fluidmaster seal, it leaked immediately, Perfect seal worked on this particluar toilet.
Hey Lonnie,
Glad you found a solution!

Thank you
Hey blaze,
Thx for watching!
I’m trying this toilet ring 🚽 ⭕️
thank you.
Hi LoveTacoma, you're welcome, hope this video helps!
I used one and flushed one time, then pulled up the toilet to look - the sponge material on the bottom of the seal (the side that is pressing against the flange) had gotten damp and was separating from the rubber. The glue that holds it on didn't hold up. That was after just one flush. I made a video about it and one of the comments on my video said that he used it and it started leaking after 1 1/5 years. He thought the rubber sleeve that cups against the toilet had loosened over time. I hate wax, but at least it lasts pretty much forever.
Hi Marty, yikes! We haven't experienced any problems with the Fluidmaster toilet seals that we have installed. But over time it does seem like they could fail. Thanks for the info!
Yeah these things will cause damage to your subfloor.
Had similar experience yesterday and I had to remove it and reinstall old good wax ring.
@@Housebarons I hope the heck not!
It said on the box it "Fits any toilet, any drain," but it didn't fit mine. I had replaced the flange with a 3 in. PVC "Twist-N-Set" flange, which fits down into the 3" drain pipe, and it is smaller than 3" inside diameter. The blue rubber funnel just would not fit into this smaller flange. I found a different product by Korky that is very similar, and that looks like it should work.
The paper towel serves two purposes it prevents sewer gas and something from falling inside. You need the plastic piece beneath the metal washer which holds the plastic cap on.
Great product like he said if I would have used a wax seal had a hard time getting bowl on right first time would have t0 buy another wax seal and start over
Hey Gary,
Absolutely! Thx for watching!
Just a heads up the link you mentioned to a more thorough video showing how to swap the toilet was not in the video. At least it didn’t display on my screen.
I've been using those for years
Hey Ray,
Makes good sense - thx for watching!
I wouldn’t take out the paper until AFTER you put. The washers on the flange bolts (I was sure you were going to lose the second one down the drain 😅
Great video!
Hey Cameron,
Thx for the input and for watching!
I noticed that the toilet you had already installed yesterday did not have the floor nuts covers installed
Would be great to see one installed on a 3” drain pipe. Supposedly you can trim the sleeve somehow so it’s not wrinkled. Would love to know how to do that. Product says universal but is clearly made for a 4” pipe…
At Home Depot, the guy suggested applying a coat of rubber cement to both toilet ceramic and blue contact ribs and let it dry. He said this makes a better seal yet still allows for fine adjustment at the floor flange surface.
It’s gonna be tightened down you don’t want to make up installation any more complicated that thing will be full of shit
@@brooksideswingerz1287 What you wrote did not make any sense.
What 'PH' suggested does make sense, because when you pull a toilet where you have used this product,
the Fluidmaster Toilet Seal, you can see that the waste was working its way between the toilet bottom and
the seal. It may eventually leak. Putting rubber cement, or a smear of wax, on the contact surfaces may be a
good idea. Pressure alone may not be enough to keep your feet dry.
As far as 'PH' comment about allowing for fine adjustment, I don't understand. I would not want to fool around with
a glued junction, it could distort the ring.
You forgot that plastic washer that goes against the porslen for the cap otherwise the washer will bend
Looks like the flange is very high. I just pulled my toilet and my cast iron flange is a little over half inch above the floor. When I pulled it the wax ring was barely there. Most had been squeezed out and only a thin layer remained on the actual service of the flange. Seems like at that flange height there is not much room for a wax seal to create a reliable seal. This product looks like it might create a better seal than wax for my situation. What do you think?
Hey Adam,
This or another product called a “wax free ring” which actually goes around the hole at the bottom of the toilet and goes into the drain flange hole. That way the tradition wax ring is not needed. May have to experiment to see what works best.
Hope that helps. Thx for watching!
Keep in mind there are at least two sizes of toilet bottoms. The ceramic cone on the bottom comes in at least two sizes and the new toilet I bought was too large to put the Fluidmaster seal on it, so I had to clean up the old toilet and put it on that, which fit perfectly. They need to make two sizes.
Hi Mr. Paladin, Fluidmaster actually makes 3 sizes of these toilet seal. We found all 3 at our local Menards. We're pretty sure one of them will work with almost any toilet. Thanks for your comments!
@@Housebarons why didnt you mention Fluidmaster makes 3 sizes? That seems like pretty important info for the purchaser to not have to make a return trip to the store.
Thanks Mr. Paladin...I thought I was doing something wrong. I'm glad I checked and measured first.
Someone gave me one of these kits a while back. I am remodeling the bathroom so I break it out to use it, but it turns out it won't fit the Kohler toilet I bought because the outlet cone on the bottom is too big (3-5/8 inch). Apparently, the 7530 kit only fits toilets with a 3" or less outlet cone. I will check my local "blue" store to see if they have the one that fits.
Nice video will this fit any size toilet?? Because mind is a round one .. is not big as my up stairs .but will this fit anyone or do I have to measure??
Hey Gregory ,
It’s designed to be universal. You should be all set - pick one up and be good to go.
Thx for the question.
@@Housebarons thank u.. next question one off the screw and the left side is wobbly and loose. Do u think the flang I need a new one .. I have to do this right away . Thanks again
I have used the Fluiidmaster No Wax Universal Seal and am getting an odor so I don't think it works. My flange is even with the floor so I didn't use the spacer. I pulled the toilet up wanting to add the spacer and the toilet sits up too high and doesn't compress the spacer foam.
Thank U Sir
Hi BEGA'S PR, hope all goes well with your toilet install, thanks for the comment!
We need to replace our toilet. We are getting old enough and our kids and grandkids are too big for a 14.5" unit. It's time for a taller toilet and better flush efficientcy. Yes, I plan to use the 7530 Fluidmaster seal. 10 bucks at my hdwe store. More modern things in life are good, mostly. Bob
Hey Bob,
I hear ya! Thx for watching!
Any particular reason you didn't make sure the bowl was level side-to-side and front-to-back? I always thought that was a big part of installation.
Hey Denny,
No reason so long as the floor is flat. Our main goal was as to prevent wobble with shims.
Thx for watching!
Some videos show the sealing ring placed onto the toilet stub and then mounted with the toilet as you lower it over the bolts. Then there are videos like yours where you mount the sealing ring to the flange and then lower the toilet into the sealing ring. Are both ways correct and acceptable ?
Hey Travels,
So long as it seats correctly, you can do that either way. Care in seating it is what matters.
Thx for watching!
Should you put a little liquid soap on the flange while installing the toilet. To act as a lubricant, so it slips into place easily?
Do you think wiping this seal with some plumber's grease or even old school wax would help with a good seal and maybe make it last longer?
I have wax seals as a backup for the job. Thought maybe wiping some wax all over this fluidmaster might make it even better.
Hey Scott,
I would leave the seal as is. I’m sure their R&D Dept tried all kinds of variations before they landed on that one.
I bet it is long lasting as is.
Thx for watching!
How about a little liquid soap on the rubber flange before installing the toilet. So it slips on to the flange easily?
so did it hold up, never leaked? i know wax rings annoying, but if u do it right they dont leak, not sure i can say that yet abot a fluidmaster?
Hey MML,
In our experience, the fluidmaster has never leaked and are much more forgiving. Too easy really.
Thx for watching.
Universal seal... "comes in THREE sizes". They do work well. They should include a couple different seals for various spacing.
Hey Midtrr,
Thx for the input.
In my case, the height of the frange is 10 mm from the floore, and the height of the space under the bottom of the toilet bowl from the floore is 15 mm. As the width of the blue seal is about 8 mm with the foam part. Therefore I removed the foam part, and only the blue plastic part is used. Is this working?
Hey Toshimi,
You can discard the spacer if your flange is above the floor.
Thanks for watching!
Do you recommend to caulk seal between the floor and bottom of the toilet bowl?
Hey Macoy,
After the toilet is put in place, you could caulk around the base for a more finished look.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for watching!
macoy321. I'm told by some to not caulk around the toilet/floor joint. A slight leak over time could cause damage, I guess is the reason. A lot of new installs are getting away from wax seals. One only has one shot at getting it right the first time. I don't like the odds. Bob
Just did a wax ring install. Accidently wobbled the toilet on install and it leaks. I'll give this product a try
Hey Greg,
Hope it worked well, thx for watching!
@@Housebarons on closer inspection the flange was warped and I had to replace it. Used the fluidmaster and it works great now. I'll never use wax again

New wax seals are not as "disgusting" as old wax seals. :-) But thank you for this video, it was useful to see the parts. Just picked one up at the Orange Home Improvement Store (
Hi Thuy, yes, the new wax seals are improved, but we really like the ease of use with the Fluidmaster Toilet Seal. What did you think of it?
Did you test the seal by pouring water down the Bowl before you put on the tank?
Hey Mike,
Yes. No worries. They seal well. Thx for watching!
@@Housebarons I did exactly what I said, what I recommended to you. I took the tank off, set the bowl in place. Tested the seal several with buckets of water before I put the tank back on.
@@Housebarons I used the thicker OATEY seal. Have you ever considered using parts of the old seal to add to the wax on the NEW RING?

Hey Mike,
You should not need to. Just double check packing to be sure. There are several “ wax free “ rings that allow repositioning or remounting.
Thx for watching!
I installed a toilet with the flange even with the floor. I'm nervous because using the extra spacer was WAY too high for the toilet to sit properly, but I'm not confident that just the main ring by itself sealed properly.
Mine leaked with the basic ring. I added the spacer, and it was about a quarter inch off the floor. Should have a half spacer.
Do you have to take off the back of the tank to fix the seal
Hey Elizabeth,
You don’t have to. But it does make it easier to move. Your call. Thx for watching!
just tried using that with a Toto Drake toilet, doesn't fit, could not level the toilet, it sits too high with the Oatey plastic flange on top of the finished floor.
Hi Yevgeni, Fluidmaster makes 3 sizes of toilet seals. We found all 3 at Menards. Maybe another size will work for you. There are different size flanges also available at the hardware store. Perhaps a thinner flange will solve your problem. Hope this helps!
Best method I've seen for plugging a open toilet flange is a 44oz styrofoam cup. 👩🔧
Edit: O-Ring grease like that used on water filters is a sticky/tacky option for the desperately nervous folk that think gluing the seal is their only hope.
Just put the blue gasket on facing down then put your filet on sinch it down and got done mine has been good for 4 years so far no leaks.justsayn
What I’ve never figured out is why only 2 bolts and nuts? Unstable crappers.
Hey my…,
They assume every floor is flat I guess. Thx for watching!
thank you. HouseBarons.
Hey Mike,
Thx for watching!
What if the flensh is smaller then the seal?
Hey Juan,
You may be able to find a different size. I’d ask atva big box store and see if they carry different sizes.
Thx for watching.
I used one and it leaked a few months later.. i dont know whats going on with it
Hi Tommy, sorry to hear that you had a leak after the install. That hasn't happened in our projects yet. Fluidmaster makes 3 sizes of this toilet seal product. Maybe a different size would stop the leak. We found all 3 sizes at our local Menards. Good luck!
Those wax rings are a pain to work with. This product will hopefully take its place in the future.
Hey George,
We do agree!!! Thx for watching!
I just installed a flange with 3in diamater and this does not fit inside the flange...
Hey Scuffed,
I know believe they make different sizes. I would take measurements of the flange get with the hardware store folks and see if they have / can order one that would fit your situation.
Thx for the question.
@@Housebarons Yeah i ended up using the Korky wax free seal, it fits both 3 and 4 inch flanges.
Would be great if it worked for RV toilets.
Hey Ron,
Not sure about sizing, but YES. That would make great sense. Thx for watching!
When i got ready to place the toilet down on the seal i now have some wobble because the toilet is not flush on the floor. What do i need to do for a remedy?
Hey Bobby,
It all depends on how bad the wobble is. I believe they make those fluid master rings in different heights. So you could get one that is not quite as high.
If its a very slight wobble, maybe a well placed shim or two will stop the wobble. It’s not uncommon for tile floors being slightly out of true and require shims. Kind of a judgement call you’ll have to make.
Hope that helps. Thx for asking.
