A moving reading by James Earl James. Truth well spoken.
He has one of the greatest voices a man could ever want.
Will forever love the voice & acting of James Earl Jones. Thank you for uploading the video of this reading to remind us of the words of Frederick Douglas so passionately read.
Frederick Douglas was a brave and intelligent man.
His deeds and words are immortal.
Aren't they?❤️

@manueldumont3709um, how the hell was it short sighted when it was made for White people at the time?
@manueldumont3709 I think you missed the ENTIRE point. It wasn't shortsighted it was a narrow view and that view was narrowed by those who continued to have slaves at the time of his speech. What good is the liberty and pride of a nation to those who are shackled, beaten, raped and murdered without consequence? What long view would you make of that?
Was this the person trump said was continuing to get better because he had no clue about who he was and the value of his contribution.
The bravery of Frederick to state such vitriol and anger towards the OPPRESSOR in those times is remarkable!

Can you imagine what it took prophetic Douglas, to deliver the speech and in those days. The courage of conviction. The stand behind your beliefs 🇺🇸 and to stand alone..
💚💚💚
Who of those freedom fighters stood with this man to deliver such a speech? He stood up on that stage alone. No secret service made sure he was safe to leave and get home.
Frederick Douglass was an amazing man. Self taught in secret, self freed from bondage who became a leader in the abolitionist movement and was a historic writer and orator.
Because of all of these things he was the consummate American. He longed for freedom and he obtained it. He earned all that he had by risking his very life. Finally, he lifted up a nation to be better than it was, not only in his lifetime, but for generations after and up to today.
After wading through this comments section, not many people are willing to stand alone.
To stand alone, very powerful words, I feel that way today in my journey with CHRIST JESUS. No family member to agree with me, the Lord told me that, there wouldn't be anyone to contend with me.
I love that this is re-broadcasted each year. This speech is precisely how I feel about July 4th.

It's clear to anyone who comprehends the circumstances of the day that Mr. Frederick Douglass, whom I agree with his statement, was speaking to "Democrats" (not the 4th itself, but using the occasion wisely) who were clinging on to Slavery, not to mention the unspeakable treatment & living conditions, some of which are still practiced today by Democrats with Intentional Inflationary Policies & Spending that sent Inflation near the Record All Time High set in 1947 & tied with 70$ inflation both also caused by Democrats (do you see a pattern, are you connecting the dots, yet 🤔) combined with Biden Record Gas Price Hikes= Ridiculous Food Price Hikes that are DEVASTATING less fortunate Americans, while DEMs Force Real Wages to Decline for 27 Months Straight & Counting, moreover costing the Avg American more than a months worth of additional earnings just to keep up with the added cost of living expenses. It's Shameful, Cruel, Pathetic & in my humble opinion a Crime Against Humanity. Republicans will continue to call out Democrats for their atrocities as we have for well over 200 years. It's time to hold Democrats Accountable. CAPISH?

The Timing is Right for this Video on July 4th Today.
When you take Douglas Blackmon’s book “Slavery by Another Name into context, you realize that not even working class people should be celebrating Fourth of July. No one is free while technocrats and corporate interests have democracy and socialism while the poor have austerity. How true Douglass’s words ring to this very day.
❤exactly right ❤
Hear, hear!
and then you have young and / or impressionable people praise billionaires as visionaries and inventors who in reality only profit from the ideas of brilliant people, when their only skill is exploiting the largest number of people, as it takes no skill just being born rich.
And you keep voting for it ? Biden a and Neo-lIb Democrats are all about Corporations (Plantations) and not people.
The point you make that corporations enjoy the benefits of socialism while spending billions to promote right-wing candidates who want to abolish social security and medicare for the masses couldn't be more ironic. What does socialism for corporations mean? $56 billion annually in payments to keep the carbon extraction industries profitable, billions annually to prop up cattle, dairy, pork and poultry agribusiness' billionaire execs. Does the struggling small family farmer get any of this? Hell no! She/He can't afford a PAC.
Also, can anyone tell me how large corporate political contributions are different from bribes?
I well up ever time I watch, Jameses voice with those beautifully powerful words never fails to shakes me.
Someone has to say it: James Earl Jones' voice is kind of soothing.
Thank you for this
We need to face our history.
"To him, your celebration is a sham. Your boasted liberty and unholy license, national greatness, swelling vanity, your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless, your denunciation of tyrants- brass-fronted impotence! Your shouts of liberty and equality- hollow mockery! Your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety and hypocrisy..." And he is absolutely correct.
Ya and all those that died so men like Frederick Douglass's could start the movement to end slavery . Your statement reads that People didn't really die in the War of Independence against England. Their lives don't matter . That in Europe most colonist never had freedom they were 2nd class Citizens at best and most were Serfs and subjects under absolute monarchys.
Yes some founders wanted to end slavery from the start such as Adams . By 1824 Slavery had ended in Northern States . In 1825 The Democratic party was formed. And Fought Tooth and nail to keep slavery. . The Democrats forced Jim Crow laws and segregation and then Nationalized Segregation . Now Biden and Dems are trying another type Segregation. A Political segregation. Which is mask for Economic class segregation. Making Corporations Sovern and being aloud to run a muck. No different then the Plantations of Old . Dems today going with the Old Southern Democrat play Book to attack political enemies using the same tactics used to go after Newly freed Black Americans in the South. Democrats haven't changed one bit. LBJ might have signed the civil Rights Act but never had to Enforce it. Truman desegregated the Army but never really enforced it. VS Eisenhower that enforced it. And Reagan passing a Law that Employees at the White regardless of color got equal pay. Yes it took till Reagan's admin for White House Employees to get paid equal .
Rest in peace, James Earl Jones. Immediately played this upon hearing of his death. Such a powerful reading.

Beautifully said. So true.
People at the time thought it was so strange to see a black man so intelligent and well spoken that they treated him as a circus attraction, doing the 1800s equivalent of taking selfies with him as he travelled all over the nation. As a result, Frederick Douglas is the most photographed person of the 19th century.
And they even let him marry a white woman....lol
Him, Lincoln and Grant all changed America for the better in a way that was unthinkable at that time. We're as close as we are today as black and white Americans because of people like them speaking out, and taking action, against the wrongs that were occurring and taking action to change it. All of the men who fought for the Union Army (white and black) were heroes and their sacrifice has gotten us to where we are today...even though there's still work to be done towards peace and unity.

I know little about Frederick Douglass beyond his reputation, but no-one on this Earth can say that man had no bravery after a speech like that about the United States in a time as early as that, coming from a man that was black. I feel inspired, his speech is like a salve to an excoriating hypocrisy to what the United States has become, especially after the rise and exit of Obama's years at the helm.
That's not to say I misunderstand the terror that the Republicans have wrought upon this Earth, especially that criminal himself that came before Obama, but I just feel the spirit of this speech in a way that both surprises me and is highly succinct for understanding this era through the context of its material reasons for jubilation, while at the same time small children are bombed to death for its "patriotism", even though it was written over 150 years ago.
The dichotomy between the veneer and words of Obama's smile however, (and I pick on him exclusively as he is one of the most capable, respectable, well-educated people in modern history to ever hold that office, a paragon shining example of society's supposed change for the better) while all the while the state bombs, kills, murders, pillages, robs, tortures and ruins people not only from all over the world but within its own body ... What is this world that we live in today?
Has it changed so little since the days of when these words were first spoken from the mouth of Frederick Douglass' mind? What would his words even be today if he could see the world? Would he himself judge his successors to be a success or a failure? What would he think of the disposition of what the United States government's sense of ethics has become since he passed? Be that for "better" or for worse ... ?
I, as a Caucasian American man, totally STAND WITH FREDERICK DOUGLASS'S WORDS.

If anyone actually cared, they'd call it Independence Day, not just the Fourth of July.
WHAT, TO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THIS CONTINENT, IS 4TH OF JULY?
It’s a shame that indigenous people participated in enslaving Black People..
Still very much appropriate, the words are such a brilliant scholar. More than 150 years ago and still it continues, the hypocrisy, and the denial of equal rights for all men, in this country. Reminiscent of Martin Luther King Jr.’s letter from a Birmingham jail. Thanks for sharing this poignant piece of history.
Who thought they'd be more true 200 years later.
It all starts with our self perception of self and others. Look at self as the cross of Osiris (deeds not money to get to eternity and as such also creating a a healthy physical world) by seeking truth around us holding others in the same regard as self.
What a huge cup of humbling. Frederick Douglas was one helluva great American to be so unapologetic (if that word even does him justice). If he’d been mocked as “woke” by today’s standards, imagine what people thought of him saying *that* during slavery.
Slavery has been over for over how many generations. Black people are no longer victims. Stop living in the past. America is one of the best nations to live for Black people.
No disrespect, but what rights do some have and others don’t? My black friends have more money than me. Hahaha.
Mr.Douglas was one of the bravest men we have ever had walk this earth. As I am a Blackman in this country and see black people men and women and children cower of the white mans presence it gives me strength to hear his words. Think about it he was invited to speak at their function and he spoke those words. Those words dripped with the fact he is black. Those words boldly spoken reminded everyone he was not equal. Those words shamed those white people and he bravely spoke and let them know my safety is not my concern. My duty to call out this injustice and fake freedom you say we have is a sham. The Fourth of July is only for and always be for white people and white people only. We don’t know when it will change or if it ever well. We do know that until we are truly free and liberated from the tyranny of all the systems steeped in racism in this country we will never be included in their celebration.
His story can no longer be taught in some schools. Wake up and stay woke.

Its sad a certain segment wants to try and erase this history from the education system. You can acknowledge the totality of america and its history while working to make it better.
@nobodyexceptme7794,
You CANNOT make anything better unless and until you acknowledge past mistakes, errors, and your own acts of evil.
Sometimes the hardest person to face is yourself. But that is where admission begins. To say to yourself, “*I did this*.” : “*I caused this pain*.” : “*I caused irreparable damage to another*.”, can be very difficult to do. Don’t seek forgiveness. Forgiveness may never come. Don’t try to explain why. Why no longer matters and excuses are an insult. But look inside and ask how do I never repeat this horrible act again.
We must do this as a nation. We can’t undo what was done to a parent or grandparent. But we can, and must, guarantee that these dastardly deeds are not done to the children and grandchildren that stand before us now.
*We The People, United We Stand, For Liberty And Justice For All*
The three most important words in those phrases are *We All Stand*.
This speech was more knowledgeable and before the release of the slave's in America. Things changed during these years, and July 4th has to be recognized because it goes into juneteenth being recognized. Without the separation of great britain we wouldn't have an America or juneteenth. Great Britain released slaves earlier, but people had to live under one rule in the past, and the people couldn't choose their own laws or government in the past. I would have to look up the years
I agree
Black people still don't get to choose their government t or laws. No black person in America wants their tax dollars going to the Laws of the land while they do not have equal justice nor do they support qualified immunity. They have continually been forced to pay taxes without representation yet the law states there should not be taxation without representation.
What black people have had to do under the threat of terrorism is to go along to get along with existening off the crumbs from the máster terrorist table.
I would love to see anyone saying this speech cannot be read in schools. My bet would be it didn’t happen, I could be wrong though

or that 25% of slv owners were blk, or that the slvs that were brought to america were brought on JEWISH slv ships.
'especially wh'te schools' f off with that bollox. only 35% of slv owners were wh'te nice try though boah.
interesting you never talk about that.
it is, the schools are anti white
This is already taught in some of the "whitest," most conservative circles. Stop adding to the racism that would be gone if only They would allow it.
They, as in the ones pulling the strings and fanning the flames...
@@katie7748 It's not gone because of people like you with your flippant and disrespectful attitudes towards black history, an yes I can see all comments you made under this post. I wonder if this was a story on Jewish history would you take the same attitude? Who knows you may but it's rude and disrespectful. The reason discourse continues is because people like you won't let actual adults have civilized conversation about history without snarky ignorant comments that add nothing to the conversation
My my my my my!
I absolutely agree with every word spoken by Douglas and these words still apply in these United States 🇺🇸😢😢😢
Needs to be read in our 6,7&8th grade school history lessons.
Awesome. That voice…. Who better to read this masterpiece? Thank you!
Amen
These days, people don't even know why they celebrate on Independence Day. To them It's just the 4th of July and another opportunity to have a BBQ and mindlessly light fireworks.
July 4 1776 we declared ourselves independent from England. Then we fought for independence from England and won. Then in 1861 we fought for freedom and on June 19th 1865 we were all Free. Now we still fight to keep and ensure that freedom is extended to all.
I was adopted. The emotional, mental, physical and verbal abuse started on the first day.
I am not disputing the legal system/judge's decision on having me removed from the first group of people. Nor do I want that custody or authority to be given back to my biological relatives or their relatives.
Waiting to have my adoption nullified. To be emancipated.
_____
My adopted parents biological son at the age of fifteen started raping me, when I was nine years old.
_____
The people that adopted me/I was forced to live with have been delaying this trial, for over twenty years.
They don't want me to testify against them. They are angry, that I contacted the law enforcement. They've been aiding, abetting and protecting a pedophile.
_____
Needed Federal Legislation.
Adoption Nullification Act:
Allowing adopted people to have their adoption nullified. To be emancipated. Regardless of their age.
This would be an Amendment to the Emancipation Proclamation.
____
People are not property. Adoption should not be a form of slavery.
I am in need of a lawyer to represent me. I am okay with going to the United States Supreme Court. This is as important as: Brown vs The Board of Education.
Had there been federal legislation, I would have had my adoption nullified decades ago. And wouldn't have had to post this information.
____
The United States government and judiciary system failed to inform adopted people, upon being adopted their legal problems would begin.
Having an adoption nullified would be similar to divorce laws. Stating abuse, rape and incest. Stating irreconcilable differences and conf of interests.
Many reading your words hope you can find wholeness in the face of such darkness.

Thank you.
I cried upon reading your dark and tremendous suffering, may the good Lord ease your pain
There should have been federal legislation written centuries ago, that allowed adopted people to have their adoption nullified.
There should have been legislation in the United States Constitution or in the Bill of Rights or in the Amendments, that allows adopted people to have their adoption nullified. Regardless of their age.
I am so sorry for what you have endured. I hope you get what you need. Adoption is great for some, but can be a hell for others.
Wow simply wow
