Trains at: Southampton Central, SWML, 20/07/19

- A fantastic morning spent at Southampton Central on the South Western Mainline where we see no end of services from South Western Railway, Cross Country, Great Western Railway and Southern.
Southampton Central was opened in 1895 by the London and South Western Railway. It was originally called Southampton West which replaced the original station smaller station located fairly nearby called West End Station.
When the station was built the surrounding area was completely different to how we all see it today. Back in the 1800's the station was located right next to the seafront, the actual area being known as the West Bay. During a high tide the water level would actually reach the platform level of the Southern end of the station, as a result of the threat of constant flooding the London and South Western Railway started funding a series of projects that focused on land reclamation to push the water away from the main station. The result of this would eventually form a new dock yard known at the time as the New Docks which today is known as the Western Docks. Because of the amount of land that was to be reclaimed and the eventual cause of which allowing the station to be land locked allowed the company to expand the station with new platforms and much more track to bring in more traffic and increase passenger numbers. In the years 1934-1935 the station was expanded from 2 platforms to 4 platforms. This eventually gave the station its name Southampton Central.
The station was unfortunately hit during WW2 when two German parachute bombs fell onto the station resulting in the complete destruction of the ticket office and damage to the island platform.
When the Southern Terminus Station was getting prepared to close completely work was starting to take place at Southampton Central to allow it to take parcel traffic by upgrading the parcel handling facilities. When the Southampton Terminus was closed Southampton Central was renamed to Southampton. Although in 1994 the station was once again renamed Southampton Central. You would of thought it would have made life slightly easier just to keep the station as it was. But hey what do I know?
The overall appearance of the station hasn't really changed all that much since the 1930's in terms of its overall layout but in 2011 the station was redeveloped to refurbish key areas and improve the passenger facilities such as toilets, waiting areas and the main entrance. More work has been scheduled to take place at the station which apparently is due to be completed by 2025, what this work will involve I'm currently not sure of.
Last year the station saw on average 6 million passengers.

Brilliant video at a cracking South Coast station. As you say it was excellent seeing GWR services calling there. Here is an awesome idea. My dream would be to see a class 68 in the classic steam era Pullman livery now that would be jaw dropping. Keep safe, regards Gary.
Thanks very much Gary, I love coming here it's always a great station to come to as there is always so much traffic coming and going, if you get here at the right time you will actually get a fair amount of freight coming through heading for the docks. I would love to see a 68 in the Pullman livery it would look amazing!!

I know Southampton Central was never a rail enthusiast's honeypot, but how I miss the 33s and 47s in these days of units and nothing else, both of which were common at the station, along with proper rolling stock in the form of MkI and MkII coaches.
Can't wait for Brighton! That's something I'll keep my eye out for later this year.

Bomb damage wasn't that bad all things considered, no lives lost and minor damage at most, thankfully. At least they got a remodel and improvements made. Great bit of history bruv! Once again, a pure joy of sound. Love the SWR (Mad Max Style) Livery, really sweet. Overall just a nice film with non-stop flow. Thanks Tor! P.S. This is a great little station to go to as there is always a constant flow of traffic coming and going and the various liveries will always keep people on the go :) I hope KFC give me some royalties for the free advertising ;)

thanks very much, I have started my SWML series now which means for the next few months you are going to purely see films coming out from the SWML as I work my way from Southampton to London Waterloo. The only time you will see films coming out from different stations will be when I do my rush hour films. I can certainly look at doing a rush hour film from Alexandra Palace

'Cracking video' indeed! Many thanks. At 13:29 I don't imagine Southwestern run many trains terminating at Romsey. Presumably someone boarding at Southampton Airport would expect decent connections to Salisbury and beyond?

I had intended to go to Glasgow the following weekend but sadly I had to put those plans on hold and will be on hold until I get my current mainline series filmed. Once I have done that then I will be going up to Glasgow. So don't worry that you cant find it. I haven't filmed it yet
