- A very good afternoon session spent at Grantham on the East Coast Mainline where we have an abundance of services from LNER (London Northeastern Railway), East Midlands Railway, Grand Central and Hull Trains.
The original station was first opened by the Ambergate, Nottingham, Boston & Eastern Junction Railway in 1850 when the same line to Nottingham was opened. The current station was opened in 1852, on that date the original station was subsequently closed down. The Great Northern Railway had taken control of the line to Nottingham in 1854.
The current Grantham station was on the Great Northern Railways main line between Peterborough and Retford.
Grantham is unfortunately a station marred by disaster and accidents. On July 25th 1868 a Great Northern Railway cleaner was tragically killed when he was run over by a guards van. On 4th November of the same year an 80 year old chap by the name of John Boswell was walking along the line not to far away from his house when a down train hit and subsequently killed him. In May 1873 a Great Northern Railway driver was struck by a ballast engine whilst crossing over the yard and sadly lost his life. In March 1887 another driver was killed when she was hit by some wagons in the yard being shunted, and finally in November 1898 a shunter for Great Northern Railway was killed when crossing the line near to the station.
My next station will actually be London Paddington.

Seeing the sprinters like the 150s, 153s, 155s, 156s and 158s remind me of being up north and I love bring up there I also like the sounds of all of them as well.
I love trains they are the best ❤😊🎉
I've changed there back in February 2022 from Stevenage to get to Nottingham during the storm. I like this station lots of good links to Lincoln the seasides and the East Midlands and the North West and East.
Great video! Really enjoyed it and love the Azuma trains! Grantham Station could do with a major refurbishment though, looks like a run down Estate!
Very nice compilation. 💪👍
Our 158s are the best in service (although GWR and SWR may come close), lots of leg room, big comfortable seats and USB power sockets for charging a mobile device. While they do lack wifi and plug sockets I hope that'll be fixed with an eventual refurbishment like the 170s are having. Great video.
I think Northern's & EMR's Class 158s are the best
they are great units to travel on that's for sure. Infact the only 158s that I have been on have been with EMR
Good to see the 158s still looking strong and going well 💪 good video 👌
Please tell me they haven't scrapped the 156s. I love them
Awesome videos as usual,I was gonna go to Grantham train station, but not while it's hammering down with rain, xx
hi great vid as per usual...first time in a while i have comment on your vid....question for you ....why does a 5 car azuma stop at the far end of the platform when the exit is the other end ...as passengers were walking down the platform to exit...surely they can stop the part of the platform where the exit is ...mmm
Excited for London Paddington
I hope you will enjoy watching it
I remember back in the 50s Trainspotting at Grantham and Mallard often sitting at top of the station also going to Peterboro on the straight from here with cinders burning your eyes as you hung out of the door at close too 100mph.....
Grantham hasn’t changed much. Plus people say that Grantham is in Nottinghamshire whilst it’s not. Grantham is literally in Lincolnshire but not too far from Nottingham. And will platform 3 be used again for East Midlands Railway to operate the local service to Nottingham and Lincoln.
Grantham is the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher
I enjoyed watching this video. Thank you for uploading this and hope all is well your end
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this, I'm doing very well thanks I hope you are too
Nice bro. I remembered when I was young I watched your video of Clapham Junction that was set on 22/12/2014
Thanks very much, suffice to say that my channel has come a long way since 2014 haha
I Like The East Coast Main Line - The ECML Is My Favourite
It is a great line to go on
@@Tornado922 Yeah. Especially Thirsk And Northallerton.
Tornado I got really sad news 😢the class 365s of great northern were retired from service
I know
That was fun! And the big payoff for me was at 23:23: the 225 set, looking as magisterial as ever. (Though one might also say that about Grand Central's livery.) Thanks as always, good sir.
I'm glad you enjoyed watching this, I had a great time getting this put together. The 225 was definitely the highlight for me :)
@@Tornado922 why did the lner azuma sound like a class 508
Brilliant video! I really enjoyed this :)
Thanks very much I'm you enjoyed watching this :)
can't imagine myself commentating while trainspotting, but good video regardless. Love, ECML!
It's not the easiest thing to do when you've got several different things going off at the same time at certain stations haha, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this
nice station on a busy mainline good video
Thanks very much
Excellent railway video again Tornado922.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
why do EMR only put a 158 on the Norwich - Liverpool run? they used to put a HST on for Norwich to London yet the trip to Lime street via major cities like Nottingham, Sheffield,Manchester is much longer, isn't there a bar or dining car facility on board. is this a big North South divide again or do they put better trains on to impress London. makes me not want to do EMR.
Great video at Grantham lots of 800's
Thanks very much, LNER are the most common operator on that section of the line.
Thanks for a great video
You're welcome :)
great video J really enjoyed it and the real treat was the 225 love them well done J stay safe matey keep em coming SYD :)
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this. Grantham is a great station to come to that's for sure. Seeing the 225 set was certainly the highlight for me :)
Incredible video man loved it
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
I Like The West Coast Main Line
This is the East Coast Main Line
same
I don't. 😁
@@gazza2933 Ok
@@gazza2933 Ok
Have to agree with you on the 158's Been on that opposite journey to the you were on but to Ely from Manchester... :)
They are amazing units to travel on that's for sure
Grantham should be renamed Azuma World Lol!
That would make for a great theme park name.
lol yeah
That would be entertaining haha
Another good video buddy from Alan Shelley
Thanks very much I'm glad you have enjoyed watching this :)
Other amazing video legend tornado enjoy watch your video on east coast main line
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
Great video :)
Thanks very much :)
Too many people about on the platform during this trains at
Very good video mate there was certainly a lot of LNER services weren’t haha, by the way the middle bay platform does that ever get used .
The Skegness trains did use it a few years back but now it seems redundant.
Thanks very much, LNER was definitely the flavour of the day that's for sure haha, I don't think the bay platform is in use anymore. That might change when trains start running back to their pre pandemic timetable, but time will tell.
Cool
Thanks
Through you for the fantastic video keep it up
Thanks very much :)
Is platform 3 no longer used ? I am sure it was the platform for Nottingham and Skeggy when I was a kid in the ‘70s.
I don't think it's in use at the moment because of the frequency of services as things currently stand. I think once the trains start running to their pre pandemic timetable you could start seeing trains going to and from Skegness using that platform to give way to the Liverpool/Norwich services
Great video mate. Grantham is a good station yeah no freight train show up which is sad to see. I thought you're doing trains at London Kings Cross on the ECML.
thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this. Grantham is a great station to go to. This section of the ECML does have very little freight at the best of times unfortunately. The London Kings Cross film was a rush hour film which I do separately from my normal films
I wonder why the Azuma at 16:44 stopped right at the end of platform 2 like that? Inconvenient for the passengers.
I did find it slightly odd that they stopped that service right at the top end of the platform when it would have made much more sense to have had it stop in the middle of the platform
When I was going from Skegness to Nottingham I saw 91109 and 82208 on the 16:42 to Leeds and 801209 went passed I think going to Edinburgh Waverley
Hope you had a good journey
@@Tornado922 Indeed I did Jarred
Was that 156401 ex scotrail set
I'm not to sure
Nice
Thanks very much
It upsets me that drivers no longer floor these from a standing start anymore.
What, the 800's? Probably because they're cracking and falling apart due to being cheap trash
can you do richmond SWML london to reading and windor and loop
I will see what I can do for you
If u can can you go back to the offords and maybe connington
I will go back to that area at some stage
Do them LNER azumas fit the platform as they look 2 long or does Grantham have a long platform?
The Azumas do fit inside the platforms at Grantham
I do love the interior of the azumas and I think they are better than GWRs class 800s
They crack me up haha.
so agree. It’s so more colourful
I haven't actually travelled on an LNER Azuma as of yet
Can you please go to Salisbury
I will try and get it done at some stage, but I can't say when that will be
I like the west and east coast mainline towards Scotland
They are good sections of both lines
Can you do spondon MML between derby and long Eaton please
I will see what I can do for you
Go to 10:19 and turn on captions, it will say East Spuds Railway 🤣
Edit: also at 11:48 the captions says Liverpool Live Streams instead of Liverpool Lime Street
Gotta love captions haha
@@Tornado922 lol
Lockerbie on West coast main line
Maybe one day, although saying please could help.
Get tornado to 10k
We are getting there slowly but surely
Like this
Go to Potters Bar
Asking politely might help
@@Tornado922 please do Potters Bar.
