Great to see these clips from the Grantham area in the 80s, I've a bit of catching up to enjoy! As has been said at that time we were still missing the Deltics and didn't really take too much notice of the HSTs. 40 odd years on it's good to see them and hear the Valentas again. Just now I can't imagine the Azumas generating nostalgia but another generation might see them differently. The shots of Peascliffe and Barkston South brought back memories of being out with the camera. I sat in the car at Barkston on many Saturdays enjoying a bag of fish and chips or a chinese takeaway; before the view North was blocked by trees (and wires) and when the DMUs still wheezed their way up tp the main line.
I for one am grateful for you being out there Roy filming away (with probably an enormous video recorder!) in all weathers recording what was mundane at the time BR traffic trundling around. You also have wetted my appetite for the railways of the fens which is quite an achievement for a SR region fan. Thanks.
Great footage but just not the same without the Deltic's, having spent 1978 until the end of 1981 bashing Deltic's on overnights and Daytime services on East Mid rovers there was just something missing from the East Coast when this footage was taken, indeed 1984 was the last time I ventured onto Grantham station, doing my last East Mid that year I've not been back since, that year Class 40's, Peak's and 47''s had taken over most of the loco hauled trains, to say it was never the same without the roar of Twin Napiers is an understatement !!! 😢 God I so miss my late teens Deltic bashing 😣
The three shots of class 47 hauled trains with 11 coaches are all "The European" (Glasgow and Edinburgh to Harwich Parkeston Quay). Northbound through Grantham about 10am and southbound about 6pm. Though not often on time as it was well known to be the most unpunctual service on British Rail.
Yes used to see at Nottingham in the afternoon, I remember it well especially when 47406 rail riders turned up which I was a member as a 12 year old lol
Pure nostalgia remember seeing the deltics around 1980 on the ecml only 6yrs old then, 55013 The Black Watch on a York semi fast at Helpston, fantastic footage.
Some really great footage & audio... When HST’s sounded and looked the part. I remember using the line service to Peterborough regularly and seeing a whole array of classic traction.. Great vid!
Fantastic footage as always Roy, thanks very much for sharing your wonderful videos with us. Great memories of BR days. Good to see and hear the HSTs in their original livery. Fair play to you for recording it all.
Sadly the deltics had gone by then. I saw my first Deltic there and that's exactly how I remember Grantham, loads of character it's all plastic now and OHLV
Compared to Mk3 stock the Mk4s on the HST rakes the seating was awful and cramped. I prefer the 47s and 55s and I counted 11 coaches twice on this video. The HSTs was a great concept but the 43s were underpowered and slow on acceleration. Can you imagine a push-pull train with a rake of 11 of Mk3s with a class 67 top and tail?

1:07 I love this shot where the dmu is coming in and then the HST comes flying round the corner!
Lol. The DMU looks so dejected.

love to go back to those days

Beautiful Valenta Sound! Thanks for reminding me! That class 31 at 8:37 was going some!

That's correct Kevin.

It's beautiful though it is a video 34 years ago. I watched it happily. A wonderful video.😊
Wow! Some superb footage. I remember spending several happy hours at Grantham in the early 1980s. Great to see HSTs at speed as well! Very nice!
Fantastic video, some great memories there !
Thank you Richard
What a wonderful video memories from the past.

your videos are amazing , and bring back many happy memories ..thank you for sharing them
Many thanks Marcel.
Loving the HST action, screaming valentas. Strange seing Grantham without the 25kV. I first visited Grantham in 1987, by then the wiring was up.
Glad you enjoyed it Jon.
Remember the Deltictype55 in 1970-71 rushing through the station, nothing compares to it.
Definitely enjoyed watching this .

Excellent footage!
HSTs with the trademark streak of oil down the side ...
Trespass incidents at 7:30 and at 10:20 ?? - looks like they are line side.- nice to see how things used to be back then. Enjoyed the video
Great stuff..
Happy Days! Dear old British Rail... How they laughed. They’re not laughing now!
Wow it has really changed ! 😯😯😯😯😯
I really miss the 125s

2:30 for a real Valenta throb.
Bit of a misformed set that 43111 was leading, with two buffet cars in it as opposed to the one......
Wasn't electrified back then?
not until about 1989
Fully completed in 1991 to Edinburgh.

meat trains through grantham girls.
Interesting to see it before the wires were up.
