  • Mount Pleasant Level Crossing, Southampton, Hampshire on the South West Main Line (SWML) and West Coastway Line.
    Location: Mount Pleasant Road, Southampton
    Date Filmed: 08-04-2019
    -
    Nearest Station: St Denys
    -
    Trains:
    Class 450 (South Western Railway)
    Class 450 (South Western Railway)
    Class 377 (Southern)
    Class 444 (South Western Railway)
    Class 450 (South Western Railway)
    The busiest level crossing in Hampshire, and one of the busiest level crossings in the UK, on the South Western Main Line near Northam Junction and Northam Depot, near Southampton city centre. This crossing has four tracks with a slow line and a faster line for both directions. The level crossing has four LED warning lights with rare and old GWE barriers. The barrier arms and skirting have been replaced within the last couple of years, which has saved the complete replacement of the barrier arms and units themselves. There are bells held within the GWE barrier units, and are still working to the date which is rare! This crossing is by far the busiest in Hampshire, with up-to 21 trains passing in an hour, equating to one every (just under) 3 minutes. This makes it one of the busiest in the UK. Whilst filming for around 45 minutes here, the crossing spent more time closed than raised, and there was a consistent build-up of traffic. There are signs stating that long delays can occur, and that vehicle engines should be switched off. The longest closure filmed was 8 minutes for 5 trains! Certainly an interesting crossing.
    This was the longest single closure I filmed, with 5 trains going through the crossing.
    Thanks For Watching!

      It all depends on what trains have been cleared to proceed over the crossing, and what haven't. Sometimes, it's worth keeping the crossing lowered, rather than raising and lowering it again in quick succession.

      A crossing near me always comes down between 3 and 7 minutes before the train passes through. Drivers who aren’t local tend to get frustrated!

    Oh wow, a 4 track level crossing❗️ I have never seen one of those before🤩. I have also never seen so many trains in one video🤩. I have also never seen a 450 connected to a 444 before❗️😮. What a video🥳.

    I remember this crossing when it had swing gates, and my late older brother used to hold me over the parapet of the foot bridge as the CUNARD Boat train went down to the docks.
    I remember that I used to go home with smut marks on my shirt , and stunk burnt coal!
    I am 62 years old now, but this area is still NORTHAM missing of course is the SOUTHERN Television Centre, but Mount Pleasant Level Crossing is, and will remain in my memory of childhood youth. Good video. It reminds me of a day much past! Thank You!

    Ah! The bleak and Ironically named 'Mount Pleasant' level crossing! With such a bleak, ominous and run-down setting, they should've called it "Mount-Unpleasant Level Crossing"! It's this as one of the reasons why I just call it "Southampton Level Crossing" lol. It amazes me how busy this crossing is, yet it still has bells and classic GWE barriers, and NR clearly want this to stay as it is by protesting any ideology or suspicion of an upgrade with new GWE barrier arms, installed in late 2018! I love how the wigwags are so high up here too - this was also done earlier in 2018, but it hasn't done much to affect misuse as can clearly be seen with the Peugeot at the start! Something that one may also not notice with a cursory glance is that the telephones here actually have proper ringing bells on the back of them, rather than just a more conventional and fake electronic sound, which really suits the crossing in my opinion! A fabulous video and catch of one of my favourite level crossings in Hampshire, and dare I say it, the UK!

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 года назад +4

      Thanks mate 😁 The area wasn't bad tbh, it was a rather interesting area of Southampton. I would've thought this crossing would have been fully upgraded with new lights, barriers, electronic alarms and possibly pedestrian lights. However, the business of this crossing is probably an issue. I did notice bells in the phone boxes, likewise at Totton.

      Yeah there's a few crossings I've filmed that still have bells. Some include Charlton Lane, Cross Lane in Collingham, Winthorpe, St Stephens in Canterbury, two crossings in Sabdwich, Kent, St Denys (other crossing in Southampton) and Farncombe East. There's a bridge called the Kingsferry bridge in northern Kent which has bells. I've filmed it twice when it opened but haven't filmed the bridge raise in full yet.

    I still don't understand why the barriers have to be down so long before the trains come...

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 года назад

      Its to do with how these full barrier crossings operate. Because the barriers cross the whole road, a train is only allowed to proceed when the crossing is confirmed clear of any obstructions (pedestrians and vehicles). Therefore, crossings like these are monitored when they are lowered by signallers, either in a signal box beside the crossing or in the case of this particular crossing, via CCTV. Signals are set to proceed when a crossing is confirmed clear. This is why a train is usually a couple of minutes away when a crossing is lowered, as it is usually 1-2 signals away from passing.
