Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 Pushes a Stalled Freight Train at Blair, NE. Complete with Wheel Slip.

  • Something rarely seen in 2023! The 4014 was delayed by a stalled freight train ahead of it in Blair, Nebraska. The freight train was blocking a main road into the town. The 4014 was promptly attached to the rear and assisted in gently lifting the freight over the grade and out of the town. Check out the Big Boy wheel slip towards the end of the video.

      Seeing this really gives you a lot of respect for the crew. It was hard (and still is) being an engineer because you had to know your locomotive and how to throttle it just right to avoid slips/minimize them. Nowadays a lot of the modern locomotives have wheel slip control systems and such. It’s cool to see how this was done back in the day with nothing but your sense of the locomotive and knowledge

    It's very enjoyable to see footage of steam locomotives in operation during the modern diesel era and a steam engine providing assistance to a stalled freight train is an impressive sight to observe. It's great to see big boy 4014 serve as a helper locomotive to a stalled freight train, this is some of the best steam engine operation footage of 2023.

    "I'm ready" said 4014. "No good" grumbled the diesels. They pulled and pushed as as hard as ever they could.
    "We can't do it, We can't do it, We can't do it!" Thought the diesels.
    "I will do it, I will do it, I will do it!" puffed 4014.
    Big Boy 4014 pushed and puffed and puffed and pushed as as hard as ever she could, and almost before they realize it, the diesels found themselves at the top of the hill.
    "We've done it, We've done it, We've done it!" They said proudly. Though the crews of the stalled freight train have thanked 4014 and the steam crew, but the diesels have forgotten all about the kind king of the rails, and they didn't say "thank you".
    Big Boy 4014 was left out of breath and far behind, but she is happy because she have been so helpful. At the resting stop for the night, all of the crews of 4014 were very pleased with her.

    My dad used to tell a story about when he was 18 and living in Oklahoma, he took a train to Linn, Washington to make wheat harvest out there. His train had to pull onto a siding in Wyoming to allow the "biggest" train engine he had ever seen pulling at least a mile of train cars as it passed his train. He later learned that it was a Big Boy engine that he had seen. He enjoyed telling his story of seeing it. Fast forward to Sep 2021. I live in Beloit, KS and I heard that Big Boy # 4014 was coming to Salina. Figuring that it had to be one of the engines that dad had seen, my wife and I drove to Salina to see it. I had heard that it was going to pass through St Marys also, so I told my son Alex who teaches school there about it so he took his class to the tracks to watch it pass. The sounds and the rumble at the crossing as it came into Salina is someone that I won't forget. Dad never knew which Big Boy engine he saw in Wyoming but I will always think it was UP 4014 that three generations of my family have witnessed it puffing steam and pulling hard into our memories.
    Thank you Union Pacific for completeing a 76 year adventure from my dad to me to my son.

      Helping yes, but also, did you see how long this was, and the fact that it started on a grade. The diesel perked up cause it saw the front truck on the 4014 was slipping and the engine itself couldn't get much traction. • @fuzzcopter467
      @fuzzcopter467 Год назад

      Technically, the diesel does several things. The main thing is PTC or positive train control, an automated system that will stop the train if contact is lost with operator or something along those lines. They mostly use its dynamic brakes though. The big boys brakes are used as little as possible because finding the damn things is impossible. So they use the diesel to brake for them, and to provide electricity. It is not helping in this case, as the steam crew would most likely not allow it.

    • @slashmacleod
      @slashmacleod Год назад +3

      There's a ton of practical reasons to have a diesel in the consist. UP has the most track that is far away from facilities that can deal with mechanical issues, especially for a steam locomotive. They also have the longest stretches between stops, (BNSF too). So the diesel helps conserve fuel and water so they can go farther. Most important is the diesels dynamic braking which slows the train without wearing brake components. This diesel isn't there to help 4014 pull the train (sounds like it's at notch 1 or maybe just high idle), it's there to keep it going longer.
