      @@TaschaHoeier Let me try explaining it more clearly. People are cramming more things into their carry on luggage because many airlines have started charging for checked bags. If they went back to allowing all passengers to check bags for free, they'd pack less in their hand luggage.

    • @GuidingMyHome
      @GuidingMyHome 4 года назад +70

      I think part of it is being afraid of luggage not making it to the destination as well. My mom flew to Europe and her luggage didn't make it for days after, so she had to buy a bunch of stuff right away.

    • @blaqt107
      @blaqt107 4 года назад +17

      Baggage was never free. It used to be included in the price. Airlines decided to make baggage a la cart, to reduce the cost of the flight. This became beneficial for those who frequently traveled for short over night stays, like business travel, who only would need an over night bag. But not for vacationers who traveled long term. It seemed like an extra expensive charge.

I once ran miles to get between the international and domestic terminals after 36 hours in flight delays. I watched my connecting flight pull away from the gate minutes before the scheduled time. I guess they assumed I wouldn't make it and pulled away early. I spent the next 14 hours in the airport trying finding a shower, buying pajamas (the only clean clothes in the airport) and trying to find any flight that would get me to my best friend's funeral in time.

    I completely understand your frustration. However, please keep in mind that some people have invisible disabilities that make it hard for them to read menus, understand the PA announcement, put their carry-ons in the bin properly, sit in their seats for more than 15 minutes at a time, process that you're talking to them and/or need the headphones to calm anxiety, walk to the restroom in their section, etc.
    Also, when people ask about their connections, they're most likely nervous about the size of the airport and don't know if they'll have to walk 500 miles to get to their next gate. I think they don't realize that you don't get gate info until you're about to land.

      She said that she understands people with illness have to do some of these things. Generally, it's people who are perfectly fine being annoying. Those are who she's talking about. Flight attendants may not know the airport either. Just download a map or look for one in the airport or asl a GA, you'll have better luck probably, esp. With the GA.

    • @oddle_doddle
      @oddle_doddle 4 года назад +34

      @@StrawberrySweetart and what toni's saying is that you cant always tell if someone has an 'invisible' disability, and you shouldnt really have to share that information with a stranger, just to get the help that you NEED either. just respect that most of the time, people dont ask unless they have to, simple as that.

    • @toniwatson8401
      @toniwatson8401 4 года назад +24

      @@StrawberrySweetart that's what I mean. Those of us with invisible disabilities don't often broadcast our condition so it's entirely possible to see one of us and not know that we're not just being a jerk. One time, a FA got mad at me about not doing something and the chief had to tell her that I couldn't do what she was asking. She didn't know that I was disabled because she was in the back when I pre-boarded. In sum, you can't always differentiate between the a-holes and the disabled. It's often easier on your sanity to assume the person is disabled first.
      Also, my point regarding the connection was in defense of the infrequent flyers who don't understand the organizational structure. I think most people who watched long enough to hear this point are relatively frequent flyers who already know to ask the GA.

      And the airlines have THEMSELVES partly to blame because they charge so many baggage fees. There was even an online article by a travel magazine that voraciously criticized the airlines for being greedy with baggage fees to the point that passenger injuries were soaring. Why? Too many head injuries from falling luggage. The passengers were trying to stuff anything in the overhead bin. And needless to say, flight delays were also through the ceiling.

    As a passenger with a service dog (diabetic alert/seizure response/mobility assist who was trained by a program) I can't always lift my carry on. I pre-board and as such a flight attendant should probably realize I got on first for a reason and have gotten lip from one when I asked for help and she only stopped once she saw my service dog who was tucked nicely at the foot of my seat already. I do my best to pack my medical supplies efficiently and only bring enough IV fluids/TPN with me for two days but it can be heavy. In the U.S I have the majority of it shipped UPS to me from my home infusion company where ever I am going. I think about you guys when packing and appreciate your help. Using a little logic goes a long way in the above situation. Thankfully when I flew yesterday I had nice crew members helping me and the one of the officers said that seeing my service dog made his bad day much better. I was putting her through her paces to keep her mind busy from all the waiting around in the terminal in DCA when he was at the gate. He told me when he was back up at the gate awhile later and I let him pet her (golden/lab ret mix).

    A note about the “what do you have” part. I have to ask this at times because of a hidden disability. I have a brain injury and reading or visual work can sometimes become impossible. In stressful situations, there’s something that happens to brain injury survivors called flooding. It impairs several of our systems... including visual and memory/recall. A simple drink order can become impossible if we can’t recall what is normally offered as well as unable to read at the time. 1 in 10 people have a brain injury so chances are you have several passengers with invisible deficits 🤟🏻

That being said, it still boggles the mind when AA to AA puts a minimum connection time of say 20-30 mins and you land at terminal A and you leave from terminal D or you land at gate 3 and leave from 31. You can’t get a cart to take you and you are always fighting the strolling passenger who has 2 hours to kill. I usually understand FAs okay, but never the pilots. @Jeff Webb It's not BS. Read about the Hawaiian Airlines evacuation that just happened a few days ago. The crew got about 200 people out in UNDER 60 seconds. Some smaller aircraft only seat 50-100 people. Passengers hinder evacuations by grabbing their bags/going into overhead bins, ETC, even when an aircraft is burning in flames. It's the selfishness and entitlement of the generation nowadays. 40 or so people died in the recent Aeroflot evacuation, including a flight attendant, because passengers were going into bins to grab bags before they exited.

    I used to check my luggage, even if I had to pay to do it. But after having my luggage lost and damaged a few times, I've given up. Now I've got a carry on and avoid checking luggage at all costs.
    Many pax (passengers) are nervous just for getting on a plane. Many are exhausted after long flights. Many are taking that dream vacation they've been saving for.
    There's rude, for sure, but there's everything else. I'd never assume people did what they did knowing better. Pax wanted to use the restroom during boarding, or service? Perhaps he's incontinent! Perhaps he's nervous. Perhaps a myriad of things happened at the gate and he couldn't go before the flight. Perhaps he had no time between connecting flights.
    Short connections... that's not the fault of the pax! Inexperienced pax assume what the company is proposing should be ok. And if a flight is late, it's not a problem to talk to pax and reassure him. It isn't true one can't do a thing. A word is free and can calm a pax.
    What I'm used to see is FA who'd pretend not to notice the call light. Walk too fast on the aisle to avoid pax requests.
    I fly a lot and I see poor service and bad will very often. Like FA letting the food trays for too long, ignoring pax calling, speaking in a way no one can understand on PA... even ignoring safety rules one learns at FA training.
    I think better airways/airports and better FA would make better pax. Not the other way around.

    Even when I understand the PA accouncements, it has been exactly the same every time I`ve ever flown. Still, it`s a sign of respect for the people who are looking out for your safety to at least refrain from conversations while the PA is on. Actually people should refrain from conversations period. I would pay extra for a no talking/no children flight. A quiet flight can be so relaxing, actually something I look forward to after a long busy trip somewhere. Why people insist on making conversations with random strangers at 6AM is a mystery.

I read a story by a FA who said on a flight from Germany to the US the majority of passengers were German and near the end of the flight as he went to collect trash from the passengers all of the Germans had neatly packed all of their trash in the empty food boxes and it made the trash collection so fast and efficient. None of the FA's on board could believe that he was able to clean up all the the cabins in such a short time! Would love to hear your comments about this. As always, take care and Happy Travels! But I overpaid for a first-class flight, so I think I can take off my shoes for a bit to sleep or recline. But I am incredibly polite to flight attendant staff while in First Class or any part of the cabin. I read the information card, I listen to the PAs, and I'll let flight staff know if I don't want to be bothered. I also do ask the flight staff to help with me find a place for my luggage if I can't find a space myself, or I ask my bag to be gate-checked. Other than all of that, preach it.

    It's _so_ weird to hear someone say bare feet on planes are gross because of the feet, rather than the nasty-ass carpet that hasn't been vacuumed since before two hundred street shoes walked across it. When I take my shoes off on a long flight I make _certain_ to keep my socks on, just so my nice recently-showered feet (don't make strangers wallow in your stink for five hours, kids) don't directly touch anything inside the vomit comet. And I put my shoes back on before hitting the bathroom, natch.

    Things FA do that annoy passengers ... 1. Do not touch me. The touching thing works both ways female/male, male/female. My wife or daughters may lay their hand on my forearm, nobody else, period. Do not touch me. 2. Selective enforcement of rules/policies. I see this one constantly. Depending on the mood of the FA, a policy is overlooked or enforced. 3. The tremendous increase of attention to FA deadheading. Compliments of the chef! When a deadheading FA is seated in economy, they get 1st class treatment. A real feel-bad for all the non-airline employee passengers. So...the annoyances work both ways! The world has changed, including the world of airline travel. Passengers are herded like cattle. Passengers wear their PJ's on planes. FA used to be glamorous, now they most definitely are not. Things are not like they used to be. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing. The world evolves. Things change.
