The critics got this one 100% wrong. It’s a great movie. It’s fun, it’s witty, it’s emotional, the entire cast did a phenomenal job.
I absolutely agree with you!
I agree.
It’s really hard for me to cry. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an emotional person, but it’s PHYSICALLY really hard for me to cry.
If nearly made me cry towards the end. From sad tears AND happy tears.
Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends
People are saying that it's surprising that Cartoon Network isn't suing.
@@Lukesmithbrfc a live action fosters home would be a hit
My daughter and I just saw it this morning. We had a great time. My only complaint was some of the pacing.
I think calling the film “IF” was not a great choice since it’s harder to market. Should have literally just been “Imaginary Friends”. Would have been more clear
In South Africa the movie is titled Imaginary Friends.
Yeah I did´t understand for the longest time why it was called if. Like "What if you had done this" was my thought. And wierd in my country they don´t translate the phrase that should be "PV" insted calls them IF´s like that won´t be confusing for the children not watching it in english.
@@Ahturos They didn't translate IF in my country as well but they found an interpretation of the title with the same acronyms.
First The Fall Guy now this
The amazing score by Michael Giacchino really brings out the emotion.

I just got out of the theater from watching it. The whole movie I kept thinking “WHY is this 12 year old girl wandering New York at night alone?” 😂a pretty good movie tho, I just wish her grandma was more responsible watching her lol
Is America that dangerous?
@@Bookish1995I don’t think any 12 yr old girl should be wandering in any city at midnight - America or not.
THIS MOVIE... I agree it starts slow but over all THIS is why you watch movies. It has so much heart. I loved it! I can't recommend it enough. Bring tissue!
Saw it this past Friday and I have to say I am in the middle from you loving it to others not so much. I thought the emotional moment absolutely nailed it out of the park but the rest of the movie had me scratching my head as it really seems like the movie was making up the rules as they went along. And the twist at the end was nice but the more I thought bout that the more it falls under me scratching my head. But that being said I’d watch this movie again with my family bc it’s something we’d enjoy
That’s actually about where I landed as well like I genuinely did enjoy it and the characters and the emotional impacted me a lot, but there was a part of me definitely scratching my head when it came to some of the logic behind the plot. I felt quite confused about things like the movie really didn’t bother explaining anything at all, like the whole movie I was wondering whether Reynolds character could be seen by others or not cuz the movie never made that clear, which I understand why now but that was one of the main things that perplexed me until the twist along with a lot of other questions I feel like never got answered.
This movie was so sweet. It's not a great movie but it is very decent and endearing.
Loved the movie. It’s really fun and sweet and heartfelt. Had tears streaming in the best possible way.
it's funny that the Invisible IF is Brad Pitt, considering he is Vanisher from the Deadpool movie🤣🤣
This movie is kinda creepy. Why on earth does a 12 yr old roam the streets with a grown man. Also why is her dad being treated in a childrens hospital?
Uh, in the movie he’s not who you think he is.
Where is that damn Sonic 3 trailer?
😂😂😂
I totally agree about the timing being off.The beginning was definitely too slow. After watching it yesterday, it's still growing on me.I need to watch it again I think as it's a slow burner as far as I'm concerned 😊
Kris Carr keeps on bashing Madame Web and it's so funny.
This was a great movie. I agree with Campea here.
live action Pixar movie with a grate cast
I plan to go see it over the weekend if time permits, but I never read tomatoes rotten, watch u-tubers out of theater reaction or their non-spoiler reactions. If you read or listen to this stuff, you'll never go into a movie with fresh eyes and an open mind to make your own personal judgement.
Glad ya liked it! Curious to aee it myself
I'm with you John, i loved IF as well, i even shed a few tears.
I loved this movie and my daughter had a great time and yes some shit in it was off but over all it was awesome ! It’s a kid movie 🎥!
I saw it tonight with my kids, agreed they seemed checked out for the first portion. But by the end they liked it and we had thoughtful conversations that don’t come out of the LEGO movie or the Mario movie.
I think this movie will also only resonate with a certain audience. Not sure how to pinpoint it: losing a parent too early, being a parent yourself, having some “growing up too fast” moments in general. I’ve had all of that and really appreciated the experience overall.
Intermittent Fasting review?
I saw the critic reviews on thst idiotic rt site, and yea, i dont get the critics at all. i really liked this movie
I trust John’s opinion on most movies except for the ones that have Ryan Reynolds in them 🤣
I really enjoyed the movie. I felt that at times, it was slow. I cried at the end and really related to the 12 year old girl. I loved the imaginary friends. I loved the glow scenes. This is one worth watching. I'm a senior, and I'm not sure how children will enjoy this movie. 😊
As soon as I heard there was a twist in the movie I immediately figured it out but I’m looking forward to seeing it
I had a delightful time with this. I was crying with this movie. I can't believe the critical hate this is getting.
I really liked it.
Apparently the bad reviews are largely people feeling that it's emotionally manipulative. So it's interesting to hear that John thinks the exact opposite. Excited to watch it either way!
All storytelling is emotionally manipulative. That's the point. Storyteller wants you to feel certain things and designs the story in a way that achieves that. I always thought that it was a weird criticim towards any story.
Seriously???
Nobody thinks that this show has a little bit of a conflict of interest with things related to Ryan Reynolds?
This show should be more professional and avoid engaging in R. Reynolds topics.
I mean, he literally started saying Ryan Reynold movies that he didn't like. Also, seems like the audience score is preety high
I'm sorry, does John work for Ryan Reynolds?
@@spicymemes7458Ryan R’s Mint mobile company has been sponsoring the show for years (not sure if it still does)
I saw it and I think it’s a fun and emotional ride. Really tug at my heartstrings
I thought this was a cute movie, when I first saw the trailer for it I honestly thought it looked terrible, but then something happened, the more and more I saw it the more it started to grow on me, to the point where I was actually thinking it could be pretty good, I don’t know how it did that but it did, I think because I finally just accepted it for what it was, a nice little kids movie, but it still seemed like 1 of those movies that I thought could either be really cute and charming or really terrible, and so I went in really not knowing what to expect, and it was actually pretty cute
The standout is by far Steve Carrell as Blue, again, from the trailer he looked like he could be either really charming or really irritating, but luckily he was incredibly delightful, his super nice, childlike personality is so infectious and cute beyond words, for the entire movie I just wanted to give him a big hug, and that part from the trailer where he’s trying not to say the word IF literally had me crying with laughter, like I cannot stress enough how much I loved him, I also really liked the main girl, her story of being a little girl who never really got to be a kid and was forced to grow up too fast because of really unfortunate real life circumstances was very engaging and added a lot more layers to the movie, Ryan Reynolds is also good, he wasn’t like the standout or anything but he plays off of the main girl and Blue well enough
The comedy is good too, it’s not like edgy kids humor or anything, it is definitely still kid friendly but it’s not like tons of fart jokes and things like that like a lot of kids movies have, it still respects their intelligence and is the kind of humor that adults can listen to and not roll their eyes at, I think the best is this running joke with 1 of the IFs that happens 3 or 4 times throughout the movie, mainly because of the final payoff with who’s IF it is, I thought it was absolutely hilarious, there’s also another IF who’s this shadowy figure in a trench coat that’s always jumpscaring everyone because he’s so stealthy that he kinda just appears out of nowhere, I also really like the ending, it goes a bit of a different route than what you would expect given the story of the movie but I thought it was really interesting actually
I would say my only real gripes with it are that while Blue is amazing I didn’t really care for the other main IF Blossom, she didn’t annoy me or anything but compared to everyone else, *especially* Blue I thought she was a really weak link in the team, she also has this ballet scene which technically does have a reason for being there but I honestly thought it was kinda boring, like if I was a little kid watching this movie at home I’d probably wanna fast forward through that part, and at times it does kinda feel like the main girl and Ryan Reynolds are kinda fighting over who’s the main character, like they wanna have her be the one who gets the most focus but at the same time they’re like “Let’s get some more of that Ryan Reynolds love people because he’s hot right now” There’s also a big story element of John Krasinski’s father character being in the hospital, it’s supposed to be this huge thing but the movie never really made it feel like it was a big deal and in all honesty it felt kinda underdeveloped, the CGI on the IFs was also a little inconsistent, some like Blue and the teddy bear look really good, but others like Blossom and a few others you see here and there looked kinda cartoony and fake, and lastly this is more of just a nitpick but there’s something you find out about Ryan Reynolds’ character that does lead to a bit of inconsistency with this world given how everything else is, I’m trying my best to sidestep around spoiler territory but that’s as best as I can phrase it without doing so
But as a whole I thought this movie was very cute, it’s not like a truly groundbreaking kids movie like Toy Story or Finding Nemo but for what it is it was charming, it had solid characters with a few very strong standouts, the comedy was good and very respectful of kids’ intelligence and if I saw this movie for the first time as a 7 or 8 year old I’d probably grow up with it and as an adult look back on and have very fond memories of it. 7/10
My family loved it.
John stop doing those “first reactions” videos. They’re borderline clickbait since it’s a 50/50 chance the first reactions line up with the actual critic consensus. Remember those “strong” first reactions for Quantumania?
But…that’s his honest opinion of this film. Who cares if this lines up with any kind of consensus?
Then don’t watch them
Stop crying. His job is to get views
After I first saw the trailer for that movie, I had no desire to watch it. I still won't go to see it.
Haven't been to the movies since Guardians 3, this is the film that's brining me back.
I'll wait for streaming.
The goal of a movie is to entertain. Making the audience feel an emotion is a part of that, but not the only goal.
just saw it really good movie
Not bad.Not good. Something about it feels “off” when you watch it. The overall script could have used polishing from more experienced writers.
Just got out of it. I think the first half of the film is pretty weak, and that it has a bit of a tonal inconsistency, but the third act was pretty strong. That said, I feel like this film is a bit of a test of how cynical you are, and whether or not you find value in embracing your inner child.
In my opinion, my biggest issue with the film was that it felt like a lesser version of 2016's A Monster Calls. IF was just a family friendly version.
seeing it with my girlfriend on monday night, and i cannot wait!
I knew what it's gonna be just by that purple thing. It's lazily designed.
We got to watch an early screener of IF a week ago. I enjoyed watching the movie but my wife did not like it. I agree with John that it felt like a warm & genuinely emotional movie but the pacing was slow at times.
Bro, HOW DID YOU NOT LIKE RED NOTICE. Its amazing.
I liked it too
I agree with your opinion as far as Krasinski proving himself a superlative director; unfortunately I have too poor to consider trips to other countries to view his movies. 🤣
Im confused why the original reviews u read were so great, and u were acting like it could be the new ET. Sounds like its just decent.
I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t say if it’s bad or good, but Steve Carrell’s casting is what makes me want to avoid it like the plague. I LOVE his live-action work but dear god I can’t stand his voice in animated roles
The message is bizarre. A girl with two loving parents needs an imaginary friend why exactly? (The IF was around before her mom died) And the imaginary friend has the same personality as her living dad???
It’s about not growing up too fast, smiling when there’s not a reason to smile, memories and stories and the importance of it throughout life during good times and the bad.
@@frankie8387 children with deeper themes of loss, grief, hope, and love
Mixed on it
I thought the girl had schizophrenia.
The movie was bad lol edit: also seems like he just jacked this idea from Foster’s home of imaginary friends, right down to the name of the Blu character! Just like he did with quiet place and “the silence”. Complete fraud of a director.
RT is a bit of a joke site these days in terms of reviews these days, 50% tomatometer vs 85% audience. Most of us will go with audience.
How short did you want the movie to be if you had an issue with the pacing. It's already under 2 hrs.
It's not about "short" for the sake of being short. There's a right runtime for any movie. A 4 hours movie can be too short and a 30 minute piece can be too long.
@@MatiZ815 I understand that. What I was asking is how long was he wanting it to be
I thought it was quite poor 😬
Yep
Agree. Just saw it, terrible lol
It wasn't THAT bad.
It was good not bad not great
You just dont have emotions
James Berardinelli is my go-to critic and he wrote that while kids will probably love this movie, adults will find very little to appreciate.
I actually feel the opposite after watching it. It felt like an adult movie masquerading as a kids movie to me. That said, I think it’s one of those situations where half of people will love it, and half won’t care for it.
It's a very clichéd film and anyone saying it's profound is probably moved by the word as it's located in the dictionary.
no you just have bad taste. lemme guess you voted for Joe Biden and believe you are the smartest person in the room?
Seems like it's lifting a lot from some other movies. Fosters, Monsters Inc, probably not Drop Dead Fred, but maybe. Phoebe Cates....mmmmm.
act 3 saved the movie for sure.
I really enjoyed it. I took my youngest daughter last night to see it. In the hospital scene when Bea was telling her dad the story, my babygirl curled up to me with tears in her eyes. I don’t care what the critics say, this was a great movie.
Here comes the you shouldn’t trust the critics people
ITS A GOOD STREAMING MOVIE..NOT A THEATRE FILM
Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was better.
There's a movie for that?
Keep in mind everyone, the critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave Cuties a higher score than this movie.
Ok, what's your point?
@@unknownnumberNA this person has no point. I've seen this (nearly) exact comment dozens of times, to try and discredit ALL of film criticism. It's ridiculous.

Not a good film
This movie kind of frustrated me it felt really short and it does nothing with its concept and it’s just a pretty sad, boring, short, generic awful movie. It should’ve been a short film. I’m really sorry if anyone likes this movie this one was really not for me.
You're welcome to your own opinion in saying so. I'll join the many who enjoyed what this movie offered.
