A loving, positive father figure in a HOLLYWOOD movie, I must be imagining things.
IF = Involved Father.
Seriously you guys should check out Foster's home for imaginary friends. You want imagination that show will give it to you
I think I was 18-19 when that cartoon came out and I remember my friend group quoting that show all the time. CN had some really good obscure cartoons in that era.
Got hooked on that one while working a summer job in college. It was unlike anything else. May Flash animation be long remebered!
Blue rocked
My son thought this was a Fosters movie. He was so excited for me bc he knows I love that show, then very saddened when I told him it wasn't 😢
Toe-peee-kaaa...
I’m glad you’re back Chris. I really enjoy watching you and Alan as a team 👍
Thank you Frank, as an artist in animation we all HATE when actors are cast for voicing. Voice actors are supremely talented and deserve so much respect and so much money is wasted on animated projects for giving voice work to actors. In most cases the actors don't even respect the work at all!
It's the annoying habit of selling the project to investors and suits. "Star power! See? It's a legit film now!"
Maybe if studio execs sold it based on the visual and story talents behind the film. But like with writers, that would mean giving some kind of creative or cultural credit to the people actually doing the thing, or cultivating an environment where there's accumulated institutional knowledge and wealth under one roof. Can't undercut employees or audience expectations if both have some idea of value and worth.
But "Batman: The Animated Series" had top-notch film/TV actors (rather than "voice actors") for the cast, and they did a _supremely_ good job, and their vocal performances were among the many factors for why the show remains one of the best animated series of all time.
Why does this NOT surprise me in the least.
Batman TAS had tv actors chosen for ability over star power.
@@marigoann2755 TV _and_ movie actors, friend. Actors such as Michael York, David Warner, Ed Asner, Jeffrey Jones, Roddy McDowall, Malcolm McDowell, Henry Silva... I could go on and on, but the point's been made, the point being that they didn't *_just_* do voice-acting. _That_ was the point I was making. Hope I've made myself clear.
So it is Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
No, Foster's was FUN and IMAGINATIVE with HEART.
@@marigoann2755
This movie does have a heart.
@@marigoann2755 None of those things can hold a candle or Blooegard Q Kazoo!
It’s got Phoebe Waller Bridhe in it. I smell another box office bomb
Who likes her other than people who automatically think a British accent equals good acting?
@@Attmay Dont you know? she did something well received 10 years ago. SHES AMAZING!!
I still think this movie is just an excuse for Jim from the Office to give giant checks to his celebrity friends for an afternoon of work.
Binggooo
Drop dead fred had rules for imaginary friends. And Fosters is pretty good.
CHRIS....Welcome back and best of health to you.
Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends was a fun cartoon. I'll definitely be picking up the DVD complete series instead of going to see this movie.
I just watched a Clownfish video where Kneon said that many of voice actors from Adult Swin are working regular jobs now 😔
Unfortunately, not surprised.
Saw that one of them passed away in his 50s, had been involved in so many shows and projects that I would love to have done...and he was living in relative poverty with a comic collection to his name.
Sadly, makes me glad I didn't choose a creative career like that.
Foster's the cartoon also featured a main character who was an imaginary friend named Blue, only Foster's spelled it "Bloo".
Celebrities doing voices justify a larger budget. The larger the budget the less likely anyone will notice the skim.
This is Foster's, and i would hope they got the original creator's blessing. Literally one of the main character's names is Blue... Someone get Craig McCracken on the phone.
I’d say fair odds that he saw that foster’s cartoon with his kids and forgot about it and thought he had an original idea.
I’ll rewatch the kids show.. it was great
Totally agree, I hate the trend of using famous actors for voice roles; very distracting and as you all noted it's just a gimmick.
I think it depends on who it is. Like Keegan Michael Key is great and so is Tobin Bell. Benedict Cummerbatch and Cate Blanchett.
@@Doggieworld3Show True, some are good voice actors too. However, too many easily recognizable voices and you focus on that rather than the movie.
You focus on the recognizable voice and you find it distracting mate. That's a you problem! You are separating voice actors and actors when they are very interchangeable. Why do people have such a chip on their shoulder about actors voice acting?
@@DANCERcow it's taking a job away from real voice actors just so they can have a big name in their movie, if you can't see the problem with that then that's on you
Why do they keep giving Phoebe Waller Bridge and Awkwafina these projects!?
Chris is right. Voice actors should be better employed
Speaking of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade the Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends float had Rick Astley himself step out of the float and Rick Roll the entire parade.
True story.
I remember that float. Nice to know that's what it was for.
I think this movie would've worked better if it was more like Hotel for dogs where they start out helping a few dogs, but then it becomes this big thing. Where they were a little reluctant, but theyend up helping more dogs. Could've been like that, but with Imaginary Friends.
I swear, modern Hollywood seems to get fantasy the least out of all genres. The less source material they use to compensate, the more it falls off a cliff. Nice to hear about Foster's tho.
Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, the Movie. It was done well as a children's cartoon, two decades ago.
Influenced by Foster's for sure. Also, watch Foster's.
To me, Ryan Reynolds is like The Rock, Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg, or Will Smith, where their brand and celebrity grandeur overshadows the character they're playing, and I can't get lost in their character to the point where they stick out and kill the immersion.
Is anyone still willing to pay good money to watch a movie starring Will Smith? 🤔 I wonder how Bad Boys 4 will perform at the box office.
very well said!! thats exactly how if feel about reynolds and all you mention. THE ROCK especially . they just go along with whatever now and its all for a $$ paycheck
First Imaginary, and now IF.
They're completely different concepts
Imaginary is more akin to The Pit from 1981
As was said in the review, IF is a variation on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
That picture makes me think of Grimmace from McDonalds
Is the full movie title called IF... I Did It: Confessions of the Killer?
🤣🤣🤣
That's the dark gritty remake.
I’ll give you guys a 👍 and watch because I like you guys and it’s good to see Chris..
on the other hand, I shall never watch another Ryan “wear the face diaper and get the jabbs for my mom as the British Columbia government, asked me so nicely to do” reynolds🤬🤮👎
I feel that way about JK. Ever since his good news smarmy spiel during the P that kind of ripped off another creator without any credit, yeah no. I don’t buy his schtick. I don’t like him and I don’t like EB either. They feel like they’re forced on us.
@@bones642 I feel you.. thank you for sharing.. please take care and try to do like I do right now, try to enjoy the most mundane things, laugh as often as you can and to those that you love, spend as much time as you can with them, hold as close and you can and tell them how much you love them..
I have a very strong suspicion that there is a few big things coming for us in the very near future
Watched it with my kids, they really enjoyed it. We all cried a bit at the end which to me was a positive. Enjoyed the ending.
Sounds a bit like My Neighbor Tororo.
The little girl is Judith grimes in the walking dead, really talented young girl.
Loved the review, glad I didn’t even watch the previews
I read Phoebe Waller-Bridge on the poster. So, HARD PASS!
Any mention of imaginary friends and I just think of either Rik Mayall in Drop Dead Fred or Happy! Both of which were great for very different reasons.
This film is a good addition to this genre. Personally I think it's like if Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was a drama
Chris and Alan are wrong about this
1. The logic of the film is kid logic. Weird things exist and happen because kids imagine it does. Is it hard logic, no. But there is a kind of emotional logic to it.
2. What do the IFs want? They want to be placed with new kids. What do they need? To be remembered by their kids
I liked the Asian boy. He was supposed to be "precious" and that doesn't work for everyone but his performance wasn't obnoxious
"When I think of imaginary friends I don't think of stuff like that"
Different kids think of different things. Some kids are more weird than others
Chris's daughter is correct about this being a bit of a rip-off of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. It was different enough that I'm okay with using the same idea to tell a different story
The moral of the story is to remember the magic of youth and don't become jaded as you grow older
It was dramatic. My niece cried. But that's something that builds character. My sister did the same for My Girl when we were kids, so it's healthy and normal. Heck, I grew up on Watership Down
I was thinking this might have worked better if it was more like Hotel for dogs where they start out helping a few dogs. Then are reluctant to keep going, but help more and more dogs. It becomes a big thing by the end.
Chris is a Legend 💯 I'm English but I can see it 💪
The real twist is that ryan drank the grimace shake and the whole thing was a giant brain trip.
Well, my expectations are lower, but you can't keep me away. I have to judge for myself. The trailers look great. Full of visual fun, creativity, and style. Something non-sequel and original? And Sebastian Maniscalco? Gotta support that.
Mom is dead, dad is dying? Sounds like Disney.
MeTV is going to have a cartoon channel on June 25. Two days later the debate. All before my birthday. Yay!😂😂😂
I enjoyed the film very much. For me, it worked.
For a long time I thought this movie WAS a remake or sequel to Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
I loved the film.
This Movie is Amazing.
The mother's death from cancer is clearly pre-figured in the images from the beginning. It's fairly stick-and-move but the mother is clearly shown in chemo...
Alan turns out to be Chris' IF
I'm an old retiree but I watched "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends", and it was actually rather good, along with other "kids" shows
I watched or read a lot of stuff which was not made for me because of background or age, but which in my opinion was interesting or entertaining, and that's all that still matters to me, including now, videogames
The sounds like a more user friendly version of Drop Dead Fred.
Is this what the planned Nicktoons crossover movie would be like before it got canned and then revived as an original project?
"If" is a song by Bread from the 1970s. Typical to the Bread hits, it's a ballad written and performed by David Gates. It's a pretty song that I recommend.
It's also an amazing poem by Rudyard Kipling about what it takes to be a man
Yo Bread is criminally underrated and never talked about. Legitimately one of my favorite bands of all time, nice to see someone bring them up.
The movie had a good heart. It took too long for the story to develop, where Chris’ rules could have helped and made the movie better, then again so would more emphasis on the imaginary friends. The friends were OK, there are films that do a better job of making them more engaging. The movie’s flaw was holding on to a key bit of information until the end. I picked up on it fairly early on and knowing sooner may have made some of the interactions between the characters more interesting than using it for an emotional ending. Flawed movie that you hoped would be better than it is. Just average in 2024.
The trailer always reminded me of a kid's version of Drop Dead Fred.
Gee, Chris, I'm sorry you didn't like it. I had no problem with "no rules" in this movie. My biggest problem were the hospital scenes--those were lame. I thought the eventual goal of the plot was reuniting the IFs with their adult kids, which, if I remember, they achieved (well, for the most part.) But it was the revelations from the past, especially the Calvin character, that showed me this movie has heart. Sure it was too much like _Foster's,_ but I didn't mind that at all. This was better.
Taken out of moment when Bea rests her head on Father’s chest after heart surgery.
This sounds like a story written by AI. Monsters Inc it ain't.
This is the sequel: Monsters Ick.
It's not akin to Monsters Inc.
As was said in the review, it's more like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
Not surprised
Just watched this yesterday. Had no clue it was open heart surgery.
Foster’s Home it’s not…
Both Emily Blunt and John Krasinski have movies totally bomb within a month of each other. I'd say the Hollywood power couple concept is completely dead.
This film hasn't bombed yet, let's not get ahead of ourselves. It will be competing with "Furiosa" next week, though.
With the promos, I didn't really get what the movie was going for.
Craig McCkracken better sue someone!
So it’s not about Grimace? Dang it.
I just saw the movie. I loved it!
Matt Damon = Maaaatt Daaaaamon 🥴😵💫🤪
Hi Alan. Hi Alec Baldwin
"Oh, hi Mark... " The Room 😂
This is not a kids movie. This is a movie for people with kids, or at least, still some spark of their childhood imagination. Aside from big, weird IF's running around, there is nothing in this movie that kids will get or appreciate. This is a touching love letter to childhood FOR grown ups. That being said, its still a very good movie. Both of you are really over thinking it.
Without seeing it, this reminds me of a lesser remake of Drop Dead Fred.
Drop Dead Fred is the lesser movie
Seems to me that Robin Williams being cast as Aladdin opened the floodgates to studios casting celebrities instead of actual voice actors in their animated features. Celebrity voice actors have no talent. They usually just voice the character in their own voice. No vocal talent at all.
Unless it’s Wes Anderson (which is less and less of a guarantee), any movie with an “all-star” cast is likely not worth your time. You can be assured it is a cash grab hoping to appeal to multiple fan bases rather than quality and word of mouth.
absolutely. they are compensating for a shitty script
Way too many WEF puppets in his movie
That's because they're all friends. The movie doesn't have any WEF messaging
@@user-ld9tf4td8s 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 get the jab and wear the masks for my mom.. Ryan Reynolds and co Stephen Colbert all WEF puppet globalist shills for klaus and George
The celebrities dubbing voices is because that is the only way they can get some job , today if you are male aspiring to work in Hollywood if your name isn't Ryan Reynolds or Pedro Pascal, you're done.
It's more Americana
Cheese
re: the rules, the plot made no sense as soon as Alan was describing it. The guy in charge of IFs doesn't know what to do with them when they're "lost" (presumably when kids grow up)? Unless Alan wasn't describing it well, that's a huge plot problem from the very beginning. If you're the guy in charge, this is happening constantly and you know how to deal with it. Also, Awkwafina voices a character in this? Count me out.
Chris, Alan, have either of you seen Appleseed: Alpha? Been so long since I enjoyed a film that wasn't a bloated 2-3 snooze-fest.
Lets go back to having actual voice actors and not movie stars for voice acting
Didn’t even know this existed, but I’m way over Ryan Reynolds, the one schtick he has was sorta edgy, a decade ago, now it’s annoying. Everything he does is Green Lantern part 2 now.
Allen is a little spineless. Am I wrong. It seems to me he is always trying to walk a tightrope. Never definitive.
He comes off as a combination of milquetoast and wishy-washy in his appraisal of most films. I don't really watch this channel for Allen, though.
Pro-dad film but, yeah, very inconsistent and the budget is way too big could've been made for 60 million
I don’t know what it is but I find the lead IF so visually off-putting that it turns me off from seeing this.
At this point, I will go see any movie that isn’t woke and pushes good family relationships.
Quiet place movies were terrible. I wanted the monster to eat everyone
So a "fantasy" which begins with one parent dying from cancer, and the other one undergoing open heart surgery??? Count me out... (What's the point of a fantasy that's more depressing than real life?) I've had to deal with enough real-life stuff like that in my life as it is; I certainly don't need it in a movie that's supposed to be for entertainment...
100% re: voice acting, I'm absolutely sick of it as well and have been commenting the same thing on videos forever. Get real voice actors. Otherwise all I hear is Chris Pratt, Awkwafina, and Kumail Nanjiani, and I'm tired of it. Hire character voice actors who create a character, instead of "popular" actor celebrities who are just being themselves. Chris Pratt is not Mario and he's not Garfield. So tired of this.
Think you guys didn't get this , I thought this was a charming film and had more heart than most of the studio releases of the last two years.
Ok… I would have loved to have seen a Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends live-action movie or cartoon movie… it would have been better than this crap!
This is a crap version of “Drop Dead Fred”
The movie is "crap"? Crap???? I understand if it didn't land for your, but... crap? Duuuuuude! Crap is 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny'. Crap is 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania'. This movie is not crap. A little uneven, yes. A bit manipulative at times, yes. But I find it funny that we have this movie about adults forgetting the joy and wonder of childhood, and the only people who hate it are those who forgot the joy and wonder of childhood. I cried my freaking eyes out. And I'm sitting here now, telling my stuffed Pooh Bear about it - the stuffed Pooh Bear who became my best friend in 1966 when I turned three - and now he's crying his eyes out too. Duuuuuude. I never thought you were such a curmudgeon.
so it's fosters home for imaginary friends as a boring dramedy
Sounds like a rip off of drop Dead Fred, just watch that instead.
just watched the trailer as i have never heard of this movie until now. but wow very bland. the voices of the monster are very uninspiring and just generic. no personality. the star power was a complete fail
you can tell they thought they really had something with this obviously lame movie....all the actors because its easy money, voice work and most actors are looking for some sort of good paying gigs....
Chris is thinking way too deep for a kid's movie. That's APG movie. And with imaginary friends are their roles. Every kid makes up the rules for theirs
Title puzzling, and giant Purple McDonald's character more puzzling. Pass.
Chris Gore looks like he's hitting the booze
Rules? On imagination? Wow you are way too old for this. The POINT is there are no rules. Not saying good or not but It's not a sci-fi or Fantasy epic universe ... Just a kids story using imagination as a storytelling device. Rules ... pfft ...
the voice acting in this movie is BORING
Let me guess. Another Ryan Reynolds movie where he acts the same as he always does and isn’t funny. If it wasn’t for the brain dead Deadpool fans he would be unemployed.
This movie sucks
A kid will watch a movie they enjoy 100 times. My 10 year old would never watch this again.
