    The greatest rivalry in horse racing history. Two incredible horses, and Alydar may be the best horse to never win a Triple Crown race.

    It's unfortunate for Alydar but I think Affirmed winning all three Triple Crown races turned it into a legendary rivalry.

    Alydar is the only horse in history to be in second place in all 3 triple crown races.

    I wouldn't say that Affirmed was a more impressive Triple Crown winner than Secretariat was in 1973 or that Seattle Slew was in 1977. But I don't think American racing fan's will ever again see 2 horses with so much talent, with so little separating the 2, go at each other the way Affirmed and Alydar did 10 different times again. The closest I can even think of would be the Sunday Silence-Easy Goer match-up in 1989. Very little between those 2. But they only faced each other 4 times. JMO.

    It may seem strange to those coming off the excitement of the latest Triple Crown winner... BUT... the rivalry was the story in '78, the Triple Crown win was just icing on the cake. I was firmly in the Alydar camp and was rooting very hard for him to beat Affirmed in the Belmont.

    the question is what would Affirmed have been without Alydar

    • @LightningJanitorial
      @LightningJanitorial 9 лет назад +7

      Betty R He would have been a triple crown winner. As he was WITH Alydar. To me, the real question is what would Alydar have been without Affirmed? Hell of a race horse that was just unlucky that he was in the same crop as one of the all time greats.

    Another FACT is why my dad always said others who won Preakness and derby and didn't win belmont allll excuses!!! Affirmed won after having bad colic and still had ulcers and won!!

    A truth who really trained affirmed and was responsible for him winning triple crown. My father Paulino" pablo" Ortiz is the one who trained affirmed. Laz brought him in USA at 13 and the owners treated my father like shit cause my dad didn't dress SUPER nice all the time. My dad did dress up for big races but not training he was laid back. Laz got to point where he only talked to the press. His sons are on TV with him but in reality we're back drug addicts and alcoholics. I love u dad Paulino" pablo" Ortiz

    I'm just going to lay a comment down here, up for all to talk about. Trainers and owners are just people...it takes a HORSE to be a horse. I DO understand that sometimes a human can make a difference, and the right touch makes a race horse, or a jumper, or a dressage horse or whatever. BUT it's the HORSE that actually rules when he/she wants to be a star.The horse either has it, or doesn't. Mediocre horses have something, but they don't have that spark in their souls to make them SUPER special. If you're a horse lover you will have already come up with at least a dozen names of very famous horses.

    would he have beaten alydar easier if someone else other than steve cauthen was riding him? If affirmed wasnt so special, alydar would have beaten him.. And take the triple crown.. How good was cauthen really at that age?

    True story my dad Paulino Ortiz or called Pablo at racetrack was one who changed training and made affirmed he was!! After first heart attack my dad changed training for affirmed and got him to win easily and laz” Pablo what happen to horse he to fat”. My dad was assistant trainer!!! And after Belmont stakes which affirmed won after having bad colic and still won with ulcers they gave the alchohlic groom Juan who was lazy a quarter million dollar house is Saratoga and extra money and horses and have my dad just extra 500 from each triple crown race!!! The owners sooo nice on camera but actors and treated my dad like shit cause he kept to himself and did dress classy 247

    Before the hollywood gold cup win thr owners rode my dad" awww ohh pablo is affirmed gonna be ok" everyday " which jockey we gonna use maybe use Laffit or another!" Cause affirmed didn't race for while!! He still won. They rode my dad sooo much if affirmed didn't win it was all on him. My dad never drinks and even had one drink before race cause he was nervous!! After triple crown they gave my dad a lousy 500 from each triple crown race and gave the groom Juan who was bad alcoholic and never showed up or showed up late especially when laz was in hospital with triple heart bypass during belmont stakes!! My mom and dad took care of affirmed during that time!! Look at some clips and u will see my dad here and there!!

    Ignorant comment, always more ground to cover on the outside.

    • @MikeSmith-cn6ub
      @MikeSmith-cn6ub 3 года назад

      Yea but when two race horses are coming down the stretch the horse on the outside usually wins because the have the upper hand period do your comment is absolutely insane pal

    • @xmi11
      @xmi11 3 года назад

      @@MikeSmith-cn6ub Try to follow, when you cover more ground and lose by a head if you both covered the same ground you would win. It's not too complicated sane one.
