First Year Playing the Electric Guitar - Month by Month Progress
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 янв 2017
- I started playing the electric guitar about one year ago today when I was 22. Over the past year I've been recording many clips of things I've been learning and I thought it would be cool to share my progress for other people getting started. Most of these videos I never expected to share, so please excuse the sound and video quality :).
I've been entirely self taught learning through different resources online. I tried to play every day when I was around my guitar, but with work and other things there were some long periods where I wasn't able to play. But for the most part I've been pretty consistent.
I will be uploading many more song covers in the future, so stick around if you'd like to see more!

you're almost there son, serious money coming your way
What's the name of that guitar?
She's practicing, not just playing. That's why she learn fast
@TripJay21 as in practicing technique in general, not just learning some specific songs
This. You have to be willing to suck and sound bad in order to learn. It's easy to play the songs you've already learned or heard a million times.
but she in almost all the clips she was playing a song
Even Karlsen it was just give content to a video. She wasn’t going to play scales most of the video cuz that ain’t good content

I remember when I was 13 years old, I am now 63 by the way, I used to go over to the neighbours where this guy and his sister would play and sing together. I would sit there gob smacked and say oh I would love to be able to do this. The guy said" go buy a guitar and I will teach you." I bought a Spanish style guitar on Higher purchase $25 a lot of money back then, had to pay it off. I remember my first lesson The guy showed me the chord formation of C. Try as I may I simply could not get the strings to ring out. After an hour of watching my pathetic attempts the guy said" your fucking hopeless go teach yourself," ha ha. I was mightily pissed off, and did just what he said. I finished up buying a book called Rhythm guitar made easy, it came with a vinyl record to play along with. I persisted and started to get the hang of 12 Bars and Bar chords etc, rock n roll rhythms etc. About forty years later I got together with the same guy, I played and sang a blues song done by a guy called Dutch Tilders. The original guitar teacher said" oh wow! I would love to learn to play that". And I took great delight in saying, go fucking learn yourself ha ha, revenge bitter sweet, anyway enough of my reminiscent crap, good luck keep up the good work.

For everyone who says how fast she progressed compared to you, I suspect that commiting yourself to a video project like this would greatly increase your willingness to pratice and will also give you feedback about stuff you might have played badly, thinking i might do the same, have had my guitars for a couple of years but struggled with motivation, massive props for getting so good so quickly!!
aim to fail - that's when you make the neural connections/muscle memory - that point where you are ready to throw the guitar against the wall.
Great insight! I'll do the same

I progress really fast and I have no idea why. I dont even take lessons, just watch some vids on RUclips and then experimente with different sounds. My current version is writing my own version with lead guitar of look of love

I’m picking up the guitar for the first time at 25. You have no idea how much this video has encouraged me.
I remember when I started playing :
"Mom, can I have a electric guitar ? I promise I'm going to play classical music"
Two weeks later : "Master Of Puppets .... that sounds Classical"
Nowadays, the Beatles counts as "classical."
Nowadays you've became old long time ago

Thanks for the video.
And all the best for your future.
teacher pla help me to play faster and plz don't say play slow
Playing fast takes time. You'll have to give yourself some time. Play a scale or an arpeggio on a speed you're comfortable with on a metronome. And slowly increase every single day. Remember to do alternate picking. In a few months, you'll get real fast.
Japhet Anciado Do that after you reach 140+ bpm on alternate. Because then you'll have greater control.
Same. :')
Eyal Save money and buy a lefty one. It'll be worth the wait.
Or invert your brother's guitar strings, if the guitar has symmetry.
We are proud of you!

Yeah I'm just about to finish my first year of playing

Claypot I'm in the same boat.
Claypot yeah... same thing here xD
been playing for 6 or 7 years now and I gotta say.. fuck man.. I suuck XDD
It's not just about working harder, but working smarter. I think a lot of us make the mistake of not outlining EXACTLY what it is that we want to get better at, so when we do practice, we'll noodle on stuff that we already know, instead of devoting our time to practice stuff that we don't know how to do.
RickyboyH That's my problem exactly. It's like lifting weights; if you don't switch up the routine, results will stagnate.
same. been playing guitar for over 10 years but i was always playing the same shit so i never improved. with my current skill, people would think ive been playing for 2 -3 years, not more than 10 lol.
I'm trying to do the same thing with my bass practice. It's not cute when a 48 year old man makes a video like this.
Kenneth Busler doesn't mean you should stop! Keep rocking
Do it! I've been playing the guitar since 15. devoted myself to practice 4-10 hours a day. made a lot of progress. Became lead guitar in a local band. Had 5 bands in a span of 12 years. Got married, haven't touch the guitar in about 4 years. I haven't lost my passion for it. And I want to go back to the good old days. I'm 30 now but haven't lost the spark, just waiting for the right time to go back again since I've been very busy raising a family. Do it mate! Inspire more people for musics sake and for Old Dogs like us who haven't lost hope. :D
Althe05 oh, I've dedicated myself. I do have a couple videos on RUclips here.

Kenneth Busler yes it is
Hey Rachel, I remember when I watched this video in the middle of 2019. I was about the same age you started playing. I never thought I'd be able to pick up a guitar and play something as I thought I was too old and busy with everything. That was the first time after watching your video I felt It might work. Then after a while, I bought my first electric guitar in march,2020. After almost 5 months I still suck, but I am satisfied with the progress I've made so far.
I searched this video at the midnight 1 am here just to say Thank you for inspiring me. I hope I can go further with my playing. Probably none will notice the comment (already 12k+ comments here). None the less, Thank you! :D

then theres me frustrated crying like a brat because i cant instantly know how to play and expert-level song lmao.
ill keep trying. i really wanna learn!
If more expert players showed their first steps and their frustration in between less people would give up. These stories sounding like "I got a guitar at 5 and after that we were inseparable!" are BS.
All of them had shitty days, all of them needed muscle memory to develop, all of them felt insecure at times because some narcissistic know-it-all ridiculed them. Some more, some less, but each music journey is different and all of us have different issues.
I got this! Be patient it will take time but capable to achieve

For someone just starting to learn guitar this is so awesome to see. Your a great inspiration, thank you for sharing this : )
I remember just listening to Nirvana one day and decided I wanted to play my favorite song so I went to Guitar Center and bought a guitar and an amp. That whole rest of the day I kept trying to play my favorite song but my fingers were beginning to hurt so I stopped. The days following that I still kept trying but eventually I decided that I would start with something easier and left that song alone for now. I have now learned a ton more songs which would be considered harder and have yet to learn the song I originally wanted to play 😂
Learn it.
Wtf my songs are easy to play
Nirvana ...
You can play all their songs with two fingers - all power cords
I will get an electric, been playing for 4-5 months on acoustic, all the somgs i really listen are from the rock and metal genre, i dont know why i even got an acoustic guitar xD
Still learned like 3-4 songs xD
stoney neff Considering most of their songs use GM and Bm chords. Those require 3 fingers. So you need 3 fingers. Not two.
Bought a electric guitar 🎸 today, this has inspired me🙂
Which guitar? I got my first electric guitar too recently
How is it going?
@@andymeza12 for me its going great making pretty good imprivments for the shirt time i played started using picks a while ago started with alternate picking right on as my teacher taught me but im not used to it. I prefer playing with my fingers
Depends on how much you play. She's pretty consistent
this inspired me to get one too
Yes!! I remember watching this video when I first started learning about a year and a half ago. It was such great inspiration when pushing through that initial hump in the beginning. I know it’s several years later but thank you for this!
When I feel like I’m not improving despite practicing so hard I always go back to this video to remind me of the importance of consistency.
I’ve been playing for a year too and I was worried I wasn’t progressing fast enough so I clicked on this video and was pleasantly surprised we progressed at a near identical pace lmao
Just don't stop or you'll find yourself in the fucking awful place where I'm at. Played for like 4 years actively and used to be decent. But didn't play actively for the last 11 years. I need to basically start over, except that whatever I find is too easy. Going for something more advanced is too hard. I have to fumble around trying to find the right balance again. It's so demotivating when I see how shit i've become.
@Argentea League If you're willing to spend money probably the first stop is guitar pro, so you can get tabs. But most importantly just do exercises, because your fingers are not nimble anymore, and that's the first thing people like us need to restore. My teacher in the past gave me two really nice exercise that are really simple but stretch the muscles nicely. If you want I can draw it for you.
@Argentea League Here you go, it's not supposed to sound pretty but it's good for getting mobility. You can do this for a few mins daily or as warmup to other things you find online. I should clarify, you need to hold all of them at the same time, and not release. imgur.com/a/gvCvwuG
Retro Progress ‘That looks easy enough’, then I tried it... I have to use my other hand to physically place fretting fingers in position on that 1st exercise. Will it get easier? I think my fingers just aren’t able to stretch like that. 52yrs old, and learning the guitar for a month btw. Thanks for linking to that exercise.. I’ll keep trying even though it hurts
@@Delta-Niche Yeah it does get easier eventually. It hurts for me too, but I remember that I used to be able to do that without pain. But if you're feeling like you're not getting anywhere probably best to find something else. No point suffering if you don't see progress after a week.
lol im laughing because I am in the beginning stage and im playing just like she was during her First week. I was feeling frustrated but this video has given me hope! 😘
How is it coming along ?

Haddasa Yes! I remember that stage too. It was boring and repetitive but pays off.
Im feeling pretty good since I've learnt half a year in 1 month
This is the most inspiring thing I think I've ever watched. Just bought a guitar and this really shows what you can achieve with practice
I enjoyed watching the smile on your face grow as you progressed throughout the year. Awesome video!
Brings tears to my eyes and so much joy. I remember too when I first started and I would slowly change chords, my fingers hurt so bad, the strings were dead and muted when I hit them, I couldn't use a pick, everything. Jimi Hendrix and everyone who picked up a guitar one day didn't even know how to play an Em chord. It's an amazing process when you finally start to begin to flow. It brings so much happiness to my life. I'm glad you are learning well, enjoy!
I soooooo agree!!!
Exactly! I just started today and even though my fingers are throbbing and I am on the basics, I LOVE IT already! I played violin a while ago, but have always wanted to learn guitar. I can't wait to see how far I can progress over the next year!
Thinking about the fact that Jimi Hendrix didn't know the Em chord at one point gives me hope
The fact that I started playing guitar 5 years before Jimi Hendrix gives me hope too
Eric E ik
You're way ahead of where I was after my first year of playing, both in terms of proficiency and dedication. Besides, you've got a good sense of timing and rythm, which will take you a long way. Keep practising. At this rate you'll be fretting fast, shred-heavy solos in another year or so.
It's strange how some things click one day, just recently I used to struggle to make a 3 finger power chord shape, and then one day I tried to make it again and it just worked, after I managed that it didn't take me long for barre chords, moving up the fretboard and just knowing where each finger should go
That’s how I felt today
So proud of you sticking with it! Awesome to encourage us too!
dang your one year progress is like my six year lol
lol hate to admit it, but yeah...
weoweearth Yeah same
She's better than me and i've been playing for 4 years XD
It takes a lot of practice. at least 4 hours a day, with repetitive exercises. training your fingers both left and right hand to sync. Also ear training is a plus. you have to do it over and over again until your muscles memorize it. and a lot of patience.
weoweearth it's because it is false

Keep it up! Unfortunately as you can probably gather from the comments here, the greater masses of guitarists with an inferiority complex have welcomed you in their midst. Just follow your own path, not the path of wannabe that tells to hold your pick differently or you should be ripping this or that. And to those saying "you suck", what have you done lately to expose yourself so openly and to steadily chart your progress on whatever endeavour? Respect.
Thank you!
Agreed with Damian C. Absolutely Baller. I immediately started practicing. I've got a ways to go. Thanks for posting you're progress. You're an inspiration to anyone willing to check their Ego for 5 mins. Subbed.
Damián C man, insulting her isn't cool, I agree, and it's great process, but you have to agree, the picking will hold her back eventually
Toot Toot I know what you are saying and it sounds like you offer constructive advice which is entirely different! In any case I don't pick like that myself but I've seen able players who do so you never know what works for whom. She also changed styles mid progress so she's still adapting.
Marty Friedman Toot?
You are progressing very well! Thanks for sharing your excellent evolution.
Amazing and inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing. Your passion and positivity is infectious!
Smiling during the "moments" where it all came together for you was the best thing I've seen on RUclips in years. As long as you keep having those moments, you'll continue to get better. You'll be shredding before you know it. Shine on you crazy diamond.
I can't believe that there are 540 dumbass haters who gave this a thumbs down. WTF is the world coming to when someone can't post a video of their first year playing, showing clear improvement month to month without a bunch of numpties having to be negative?
garbarrage make that 703 haters -_-
Another 7 since you posted that 15 hours ago. Seriously, who are these people?
garbarrage it really takes a jerk to dislike this kind of video
garbarrage Exactly my thoughts, it boils my blood even thinking about all these idiots disliking a video like that
I totally agree. The smiles toward the end made the video for me. I enjoy seeing the progress and all, but seeing her "see" it was so great! Who are the haters? It's the people who have nothing better to do with their time than crap on other people for what they do, but will never put forth the effort to accomplish anything themselves. The world has plenty of them.
i've been playing guitar for 3 years and she's progressed better than me :P
Oh, the same here 😭😂 I don't know but that makes me feel a little bit bad
Some ppl are made of music- my brotherXD
Same here maybe we should start playing something every day
I got "good" pretty fast, in 3 months i learnt two songs with solos now at month 11 i know pretty much every song of master of puppets
Lol same exactly been 3 years I still can't play lead properly 😂
Rachelf, I am so impressed! You did a great job teaching yourself, and it gives me hope that it can be done! Bravo!
Compliments ! your progress are wonderful! It's fantastic thet you 've done all alone!!!!
I started to learn guitar since i was 18 (2010) , i would never know how my life was changed since i picked up the guitar that year. now i am 24, i am studying contemporary music for guitar major in university, i changed my major from business to music ,and playing Jazz now. hope you would have a different life as you keep learning~
jazz instead of business? well it's your life...
heyitsthegaykid I had a chance to take Business Master Degree , however I eager to learn music more than economics , since that I dropped it .still, it cost prices it didn’t mean easy to enroll conservatory, I had to learn theory myself, practice for auditions . Finally, why jazz? Blues is the foundation of contemporary music, jazz is the foundation of fusion, that’s a lot of-benefits from learning it, that means you can play your music in so many ways (I am not saying styles),it helps you to create your own style.👍🏼
It sounds stupid, hearing it from my perspective, yet nice. I am also an 18 year old who is looking to play the guitar, I have never held an electric guitar, and I am looking to buy one as of this month for sure. It would be cool to get a good grasp at it. I listen to classical rock/metal all day, so why not play it. Do you have any tips that would be of some use?
Well i can not say Metal or any Rock or "Classic" Rock you mean is bad ,i do love it. Anyway as you are beginner ,it's about how greedy you want to be , you may like to play power chords at frist ,until one day you feel that's boring you want to play more stuff, then you learn skills scales chords, but those concider guitar technique ,i call it foundation, after that you may know you need to learn "Music".My suggestion ,Find a good teacher listen to him or her grab a nice guitar and pedal so that won't waste money, stick with your teacher at least one year .
Lacus Luk Well i'm 15 started playing a few weeks ago i mean the rock is in my family since my father is hardcore Motörhead fan :)
I've been playing guitar for 17 years and she progressed far better than me in one year
Ayden Fugal that’s... sad.
Jason I meant it was a lot harder for me to progress in the first year of playing not that she is better than me after only a be year
Ayden Fugal shame on you... :p
Ayden Fugal Damn. Did you just not practice at all? That’s pretty sad
So true ive been battling on for 3 years and still no where near that
I love watching you play and see you grow. You are doing great.
I bought my first electric guitar today and I'm SO INSPIRED by your videos! I can't wait to play things I've always loved listening to!
Buy yourself a metronome and play slower. To play faster, your brain needs to be able to follow your fingers. Other than that, you're doing solidly well.
Honestly there's not even a need for buying one anymore, there are shittons of free apps designed to work the same way, such a beautiful century. As long as you get the right one and set it up properly it works briliant too.
In fact, just google "metronome" and there's one right there.
Cryptid undead wow such skills, I bet you're famous or something
yeah, he's got them undead powers, prolly bends time or something
Famous for being the worst bassist alive.
what a great and inspirational video for people that want to start! I only started playing when I was 23. Started on an acoustic to build up strength. great stuff! Never too late to learn guitar. :)
Thank you for giving us learners motivation and inspiration to just keep going! I’ve been playing the guitar since high school but never really thought much of it. I’ve been going through depression and I just bought my first electric guitar and it’s really helping me take my mind off things and I want to get better and play jazz and funk and get good enough that I can play with other people and be happy
This is exactly how learning any instrument is. Its always about just putting in the effort and drive in to get what you want out. If there is any musician out there struggling to learn an instrument know that it takes years to master an instrument.
Good luck to all you out there and keep rocking 🤘
Hearing her play ghost bc melted my heart.
Hunter Renfroe oh my god me too, i love ghost bc
👻 ghost is so fucking good!
Yesss
ik
I’m getting an electric guitar for Christmas and know nothing about guitar, this video is really inspiring and it makes me smile when you smiled in the video. Good work, I aspire to be as good as you!
Sharkeisha and the 9 dwarves It really becomes a part of you!
P. Doherty I am REALLY shitty at guitar! I can’t play at all lol. Look at the videos on my channel and you’ll see
Dflex Sometimes my hands don’t reach to where they need to go! It’s really annoying too, as long as I know the notes or whatever, I can play it on GarageBand but not on an actual guitar! 😭
Dflex Idk it could be the way I’m playing that makes it so hard? Lol my mom keeps making jokes about how I’d be better with a ukulele than an electric guitar
Dflex Yea you are so right. I haven’t been practicing much lately, I’m gonna keep working at it and try to play new songs! Also can most guitarists read sheet music? I can’t I play by ear or look at the things where they tell you where to put your fingers. Am I going to have to learn to read sheet music or is it not necessary
it’s really inspiring that she showed that she wasn’t the best in the beginning because everyone learns at a different pace and it gives me hope that i will be as good as her at the one year mark
Great video. I love seeing hard work and persistence paying off. I believe it was October, 10 months in, when the first smile appeared. Thanks for allowing us to watch part of your guitar journey.
My dad said that if I can play guitar by Christmas He'll get me an electric, do you guys believe in me?
(Edit: Thanks for all the support :)
Big Emo Torpedo yes do it?
Learn D, A, G and C then branch out to things like D7, Am... etc and you’ll be able to play in no time. I’ve been playing for a month and I can do the guitar riff from day tripper
Wow dude, thank you so much!! :D
Hell yeah
Cause if you get a guitar by Christmas you’ll probably get a good one, you’ll need an amp too, But I learned by my self and it’s so fun you should definitely try
Great progress in one year -- congratulations, and thanks for sharing this!
Bloody fantastic and you've made me even more excited for my own journey!
Im just thinking of starting to learn guitar. That was wonderful. very inspiring.
Get that pinky strength up! It'll screw you over in later years
David Mardakhayev Can confirm. Guitar player of nearly 6 years now. The things that were really limiting for me were a weak left pinky, and way to much reliance on down picking.
David Mardakhayev so true! I never took the "easy road"! Always used the pinky when I should have! Good advice!
Thanks Rachel, I'm seeing your video every week as a source of inspiration for my workout.
Definitely the elements of determination, discipline, talent and joy at work. Nice work!
this is very admirable without mentioning how as you learned to play better you began to love guitar more and played it a lot more often
I noticed there aren't too many useful comments, so here's some actual tips:
1) Please please please start using a METRONOME!!!*
2) Ppl saying she holds the pick wrong are idiots. There is no "right way" - do what's comfortable for you and keep relaxed.
3) Learn to play like Frusciante - that's the easiest way to pick up left hand muting (which you need for sweeping)
*Playing in time is way more important than trying to play fast. I know it may seem boring, but the fastest way to improve is to focus on increasing complexity (i.e. sweeps, tapping, economy picking) at a SLOW tempo where you can play it 100% perfectly. This way you'll have a solid foundation, onto which you can build speed much quicker than what you're currently doing. Good luck!
Metronome isn't the only way to play in time. Metronomes have a tendency to turn peoples playing into a kind of robotic boring trash. People end up judging how good they are just by if they can go up and down scales at certain speeds, which is extremely limiting especially long term. Playing along to songs/backing tracks or just tapping your foot in time is a better way in my opinion. If you can find a band or other musicians to play along with then that's even better.
klumpos duh Metronome IS the only way to play on time dude, this is not something that really is up to debate cause rythme is foundation of music, and you have to learn to be on time to improvise and play with the rules, this is a no choice situation if you don't have the good feeling with rythme. Ofc it's not "style-friendly" but almost no beginner is hehe. Even though i think i understand what you mean by robotic
mindlesskris I don't give a flying fuck about sweeps, that's boring bullshit - Phil Anselmo
Sorry but you're totally wrong. I hope you don't play guitar yourself because you'll be going down a dark path with that kind of thinking.
You must be too far gone to change your mind aswell because you said 'this is not something that really is up to debate'. That is the worst kind of thinking when it comes to how to learn an instrument so hopefully you don't actually play one
"Tonight, as well as the rest of the circle of the brotherhood, that walks in day to fucking day together, yet we shall return" - also Phil Anselmo :D
So... I wouldn't take all his chuunibyou shit too seriously (yeah, I know it's the other one)
i just want to thank you for all this videos, you inspired me so much! i took the day off to take notes and write down the songs that you were training in the beginning, i always wanted to play guitar and i've been playing with the acoustic for 5 months, but i'm saving some money to buy an electric. i've been so confused about where i should start and these videos of your progress and all the struggling helped me a lot!
I just picked up an electric guitar last week and this has been so inspiring
you improved rather quickly
You played Cirice, I subbed. That simple.
That one guy
Ya sure? I'm pretty sure it says cirice in the description.
That one guy she played both
I just started playing again and your first day is literally me right now haha so you are very inspiring knowing if i stick to it i will hopefully be where you are after the years. thank you.
Awesome to see your progression on guitar I never had guitar lessons at all I played by ear at a young age but to see you play difficult songs that most people can't play is awesome keep up the good work your doing well
