      This. You have to be willing to suck and sound bad in order to learn. It's easy to play the songs you've already learned or heard a million times.

    I remember when I was 13 years old, I am now 63 by the way, I used to go over to the neighbours where this guy and his sister would play and sing together. I would sit there gob smacked and say oh I would love to be able to do this. The guy said" go buy a guitar and I will teach you." I bought a Spanish style guitar on Higher purchase $25 a lot of money back then, had to pay it off. I remember my first lesson The guy showed me the chord formation of C. Try as I may I simply could not get the strings to ring out. After an hour of watching my pathetic attempts the guy said" your fucking hopeless go teach yourself," ha ha. I was mightily pissed off, and did just what he said. I finished up buying a book called Rhythm guitar made easy, it came with a vinyl record to play along with. I persisted and started to get the hang of 12 Bars and Bar chords etc, rock n roll rhythms etc. About forty years later I got together with the same guy, I played and sang a blues song done by a guy called Dutch Tilders. The original guitar teacher said" oh wow! I would love to learn to play that". And I took great delight in saying, go fucking learn yourself ha ha, revenge bitter sweet, anyway enough of my reminiscent crap, good luck keep up the good work.
    Regards John Lee Australia.

      Playing fast takes time. You'll have to give yourself some time. Play a scale or an arpeggio on a speed you're comfortable with on a metronome. And slowly increase every single day. Remember to do alternate picking. In a few months, you'll get real fast.

    Brings tears to my eyes and so much joy. I remember too when I first started and I would slowly change chords, my fingers hurt so bad, the strings were dead and muted when I hit them, I couldn't use a pick, everything. Jimi Hendrix and everyone who picked up a guitar one day didn't even know how to play an Em chord. It's an amazing process when you finally start to begin to flow. It brings so much happiness to my life. I'm glad you are learning well, enjoy!

      Just don't stop or you'll find yourself in the fucking awful place where I'm at. Played for like 4 years actively and used to be decent. But didn't play actively for the last 11 years. I need to basically start over, except that whatever I find is too easy. Going for something more advanced is too hard. I have to fumble around trying to find the right balance again. It's so demotivating when I see how shit i've become.

      @RP-dy5mu 6 лет назад

      @Argentea League If you're willing to spend money probably the first stop is guitar pro, so you can get tabs. But most importantly just do exercises, because your fingers are not nimble anymore, and that's the first thing people like us need to restore. My teacher in the past gave me two really nice exercise that are really simple but stretch the muscles nicely. If you want I can draw it for you.

    • @RP-dy5mu
      @RP-dy5mu 6 лет назад +1

      @Argentea League Here you go, it's not supposed to sound pretty but it's good for getting mobility. You can do this for a few mins daily or as warmup to other things you find online. I should clarify, you need to hold all of them at the same time, and not release. imgur.com/a/gvCvwuG

      Retro Progress ‘That looks easy enough’, then I tried it... I have to use my other hand to physically place fretting fingers in position on that 1st exercise. Will it get easier? I think my fingers just aren’t able to stretch like that. 52yrs old, and learning the guitar for a month btw. Thanks for linking to that exercise.. I’ll keep trying even though it hurts

    • @RP-dy5mu
      @RP-dy5mu 6 лет назад

      @@Delta-Niche Yeah it does get easier eventually. It hurts for me too, but I remember that I used to be able to do that without pain. But if you're feeling like you're not getting anywhere probably best to find something else. No point suffering if you don't see progress after a week.

    Hey Rachel, I remember when I watched this video in the middle of 2019. I was about the same age you started playing. I never thought I'd be able to pick up a guitar and play something as I thought I was too old and busy with everything. That was the first time after watching your video I felt It might work. Then after a while, I bought my first electric guitar in march,2020. After almost 5 months I still suck, but I am satisfied with the progress I've made so far.
    I searched this video at the midnight 1 am here just to say Thank you for inspiring me. I hope I can go further with my playing. Probably none will notice the comment (already 12k+ comments here). None the less, Thank you! :D

      It's not just about working harder, but working smarter. I think a lot of us make the mistake of not outlining EXACTLY what it is that we want to get better at, so when we do practice, we'll noodle on stuff that we already know, instead of devoting our time to practice stuff that we don't know how to do.

That whole rest of the day I kept trying to play my favorite song but my fingers were beginning to hurt so I stopped. The days following that I still kept trying but eventually I decided that I would start with something easier and left that song alone for now. heyitsthegaykid I had a chance to take Business Master Degree , however I eager to learn music more than economics , since that I dropped it .still, it cost prices it didn’t mean easy to enroll conservatory, I had to learn theory myself, practice for auditions . Finally,why jazz? Blues is the foundation of contemporary music, jazz is the foundation of fusion, that’s a lot of-benefits from learning it, that means you can play your music in so many ways (I am not saying styles),it helps you to create your own style.👍🏼

      It sounds stupid, hearing it from my perspective, yet nice. I am also an 18 year old who is looking to play the guitar, I have never held an electric guitar, and I am looking to buy one as of this month for sure. It would be cool to get a good grasp at it. I listen to classical rock/metal all day, so why not play it. Do you have any tips that would be of some use?

    • @lukyep5971
      @lukyep5971 7 лет назад

      Well i can not say Metal or any Rock or "Classic" Rock you mean is bad ,i do love it. Anyway as you are beginner ,it's about how greedy you want to be , you may like to play power chords at frist ,until one day you feel that's boring you want to play more stuff, then you learn skills scales chords,but those concider guitar technique ,i call it foundation, after that you may know you need to learn "Music".My suggestion ,Find a good teacher listen to him or her grab a nice guitar and pedal so that won't waste money, stick with your teacher at least one year .

      If more expert players showed their first steps and their frustration in between less people would give up. These stories sounding like "I got a guitar at 5 and after that we were inseparable!" are BS.
      All of them had shitty days, all of them needed muscle memory to develop, all of them felt insecure at times because some narcissistic know-it-all ridiculed them. Some more, some less, but each music journey is different and all of us have different issues.

    Brought me back to when I first started playing. Keep up the good work and make sure that you find your sound and use great guitarists as examples and take a little bit of their techniques and incorporate it into your sound. Also make sure to be diverse! listen to everything you can and take some licks from every genre and find out what makes it special to you and everyone who hears it. keep shredding!

  • @jazzyjake36
    @jazzyjake36 7 лет назад +299

    The reason its so hard to play a lot of solos from varies artists is because people try to replicate it exactly. I feel that you advance a lot more when you start putting your own sound (or flavor) in them, pretty much like a singer would do. Everyone has there own style of playing just like every singer has their own voice so when you try to be exactly like someone else it can be difficult. Putting your own twist on a solo doesn't mean you aren't good and can't play it, its just you playing in your own version and that is what makes your sound unique. I also think that it is better for beginner guitarists to not use distortion when practicing until they have the song down. That's just my opinion, but when you play with distortion too much you become sloppy because you can't hear the mistakes you are making. Playing it clean will really let you know what you need to work on.

    • @dynamitecreekvet
      @dynamitecreekvet 7 лет назад

      Good tips jakob,thanks. I've been playing for about 10 months now and one thing I'm starting realizing (just like you said) is that its not necessary to get bogged down on copying a solo verbatim. It's OK to modify things to suit you. Just keep playing. Been playing a lot of blues the last 4-5 months and its helped my soloing immensely. The guy I learn lessons from says learn licks, don't worry too much about scales. Now when I go back to rock music I can sort of solo over any song even though it may sound a bit different.

    • @jazzyjake36
      @jazzyjake36 7 лет назад +1

      Tom Hutchison Right on man, I'm thinking about starting my own channel and posting videos. I have met tons of amazing guitarists that have so much talent, but can only play other peoples songs. There is nothing wrong with that if thats what they want to do but I got a lot better at freestyling and writing my own music when I stopped playing by the book so-to-say. I never grew up learning anything but tabs, chords and a couple blues scales. I may not be able to flawlessly re-perform cliffs of dover but I can write and play my own stuff excellently.

And also try loosening up your right hand a bit. when your hand gets more agile you will start using the pick almost like when you're writing with a pen. so try and loosen up your fingers. it will help your precision
    hope it helps and good luck :)

    Very cool! Great progression. As a guitarist of over ten years I'd like to offer some advice take it as you will.
    1.stick with it guitar is a wonderful hobby and passion and will continue to be a source of joy for the rest of your life.
    2. Play what you like
    3.learn scales and chords. major scale minor pentatonic major pentatonic. Scales will help you immensely later on and will allow you to improvise your own unique solos and voice. I wish back when I was 15 I had spent more time on these things because as a college student studying to be a professional guitarist it is beyond important
    4.to all the guitarist with negative things to say about this video remember we are a pretty small community and should only be encouraging to one another. No one is better or worse just cause you can play a certain solo in a certain song that's not what it's all about music is something special so what purpose does being negative and mean serve making someone potentially not want to play is destroying the very thing that brings us all so much joy that is music.
    In closing to this really long comment I truly hope you stick with it and your progress is truly impressive keep it up!
    Sincerely a fellow musician.
